Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

This aft. I rooted for the Braves to beat the Yankees to no avail. Tonite I'm rooting for the Mets against Boston & I guess I'll be disappointed. Again the N.L. can't seem to win against the A.L.
We're getting some rain but not like the East Coast to Eastern P.A. Looks like it might be nice for the 4th.
I was glad to hear your good news. Soon everything will be back to normal and you'll feel much better.
Another month about gone. Went to the bank today for the next month expense money. Then to the drug store for my meds. I have $250 deductible & then my insurance kicks in. So, for the rest of the year my meds are cheaper.
Barb washed the car today. We were going to the Mall this aft. but it got cloudy & Barb wanted the car to stay clean a little longer, so we put it off til Fri. after I get my hair done. It did rain again. But she got a bike ride in.
Pittsburgh is all ado about having the All Star Game there. Been fixing things up, etc. Good publicity for them. Too bad their team isn't better.
USA Today has had articles concerning retirement. How much you should save for it, etc. The article recommended having a will & permission to "pull the plug" if needed. My will is up to date & I have a clause saying "the plug could be pulled" if I was lingering & hopeless. Do you have a will?
I was surprised to hear that Eddie is going out for football. More power to him. You'll still have games to go to.
Is the Hellenbrand who plays for Montreal from Middleton by any chance? I watched the game when the Mets were there, & took notice of him.
Last Fri. Kim, Betsy & Michelle, all teachers, went gambling at Salamanca, N.Y. Afterwards they would take Kim out to lunch for her birthday. Tomorrow we'll find out if they were lucky. They won buyt played more -- came out even.
Thurs pm.
Kim's class reunion is scheduled for Sat nite at the Holiday Inn. The last committee meeting is tonite so Kim left early & Lar went to work. Torey is waiting by the back door for Lar to pick him up. They enjoyed the hospital party last Sat. nite.
Everything is cleaned up & I'm watching the Mets at Boston. No score yet so I hope the Mets will do better tonite.
When Dale came home from work, he asked if we'd had rain. Just a few drops. He said it rained hard at work.
Not much going on for us so not much to write. about. We got Andy's thank you notes. He must have had to write a few thank you notes.
Until next time our love to all.

I'm watching the Mets vs. Orioles & the Mets are finally ahead of the Orioles. David Wright had a home run emptying all the bases. I think I heard he's getting a lot of All-Star votes & they wondered if he's a great third baseman. Maybe not yet, but they say he has a great future. This was his 3rd grand slam & he has been with the Mets about 2 yrs. Naturally he is my choice no matter if Andy thinks Chipper is the best!!
Barb & Dale were very unhappy when they were awakened at 3:30 this A.M. by loud & vulgar talk coming from the young couple who bot Collins' house. Dale yelled "Keep it down" to no avail & Barb yelled "Please don't talk so loud". I'm sure others were awakened as well. It was the "f" word this & that. Marisa, Lynn's daughter says, "Don't look to our generation to save the world." With all the vulgar language, bad TV, & computer images, she might be right.
You know I get my hair "done" on Fri. & Sat A.M. I put curlers in the top of my hair. Barb made a comment but Mon. I get a perm & now my hair doesn't stay as well & I wanted it presentable for church.
I sat alone in church today. It's been very warm & both Alice & Betty have heart problems so they might not have been feeling up to par.
Patty & her new husband sat on the other end of the pew so after church I offered my best wishes on the wedding & met husband Ron. They are a cute couple & so happy.
Last nite we ate at 5:30 as Barb wanted to ride her bike at 6:30 p.m. Afterwards Dale said it was really too hot to enjoy the meal. He came in from sitting in the sun. So when it is still hot, I sugested a big salad, and he agreed. Tossed salad with hard-cooked eggs, shrimp plus the usual. I'm glad he doesn't mind salads & rolls.
The Mets take first place over golf today. I check to see what is happening during the commercials. Next weekend the Mets are at Toronto & that should be interesting. I like interleague play.
Yesterday I watched Washington beat the Yankees & the Yanks had been leading by 7 runs. It was their closer, used for 5 outs. A swift runner stealing 2 bases & coming in on a bad throw by Mariano. They really rattled him & Wash. won the game!
June 21.
When I got my perm I told Sheila about the loud noise early Sun A.M. A young couple, planning to be married in July, bot Collins' house & moved in. The guy had a motorcycle accident & after that Sheila heard the wedding was off. Sheila said he is another one of those bad boys girls seem to be attracted to. The gal is a Dr. daughter & goes to college. It seems like she should have better sense & maybe she began to realize she's been wrong. Her family lives across the st. from Lynn & they have been doing a lot of work around the house. Maybe they were going to have the reception there.
Barb rode her bike this A.M. Now she is picking strawberries & will also pick up a few groceries for me.
Kim's birthday is today. We celebrate it tomorrow.
Yesterday A.M. I watched "Pillow Talk" & it is such a cute movie. Good they aren't that long. In the aft. I watched "Casablanca", a completely different movie. Enjoyed it.
Will Atlanta Braves ever win a game? I'm beginning to feel sorry for them -- they must be feeling terrible. Gone from top to bottom. But I'm still happy the Mets are on top!
This coming Sat. the Warren Hospital Auxiliary has their yearly money making event. Lar & Kim go with another couple. For the last couple of years it has been at Bett's Park. They have a large tent, tables to sit at, food & band. $50.00 a couple & they always have a good time. No jeans allowed -- I thought people would realize that would be unacceptable, but they had to add that. Sports jacket for men. Kim wears a long skirt -- more semi-format outside. Think it said they plan for a large turnout.

The sportsheadline "Steelers hold their breath" in our A.M. paper was true of all Western Pa/. fans, when they heard the news of "Big Ben's" motorcycle accident. Just hope he will be O.K.
Yesterday A.M.'s temp was 43. I was freezing & Dale said put the heat on. I hated to do that because it is practically the middle of June. But I did to get the chill off the house. This A.M. was better -- no heat needed.
Last nite I was in bed by 9:30 & asleep as soon as I hit the pillow. It was a busy day for me. Barb said she planned to ride her bike so I thought she'd put off getting groceries til today. So late A.M., I set dinner rolls since it was a cool day. After lunch, she came dressed to go grocery shopping & said "Want to go to the Mall?" "Sure," I said. By the time we got home it was 2:30. Punched the dough down, put away groceries, rested 10 min. with a cup of coffee. Then formed & baked my rolls. Cleaned up the dishes. Sat & had another cup of coffee. Planned an easy meal -- spaghetti & meatballs. Frozen. I had already cooked & sauce from a jar equals an easy meal. Plus salad & Italian bread. Good meal.
Today I'm fixing chop suey & after hearing you cooked meat cubes in the crockpot I decided to try it using beef broth & cr. mushroom soup plus onions & celery. Easier because the other way I have to watch the liquid doesn't boil away. Maybe I won't have to thicken it.
Last Thurs. Kim had good news. Kim, Betsy & Michelle (she has a membership) go to the Moose Club & take chances on a money thing you have to sign up on Sun. nite in order to win. The pile was growing, they signed up, & Kim got a call saying she had won $3400.00. She couldn't believe it. They split their winnings 3 ways but that still is a nice bit of cash. They always tip the bartender & Kim gave her $35.00.
Lar & Kim are planning to add a screened porch off the 2nd bedroom & hope to do it this summer. Her brother Paul might come up from Atlanta for 2 weeks & help build it. Too many bugs spoil sitting on the deck.
Today I'm not doing much. Changed my sheets & did 2 loads of wash. Got some new sheets yesterday -- the reason for a 2nd load.
Finally the N.L. gets some attention from ESPN. Mets vs. Phillies Wed. 7 pm. My lucky day! Has Andy changed his mind concerning the Mets! Also the Wed aft game have N.L. teams playing.
Thank you for the picture of Andy & "his parents" in his graduation robe. Very nice picture of all of you. Did he find a summer job?
I also got of picture of our pastor's son, taken for his 1st birthday. In a think you note -- he is so cute.
Barb sold about $18.00 worth of stuff in the rummage sale. Lynn didn't sell as much as she hoped to, so will have another one this Thurs & Fri. Barb is looking for anything I might have that could sell. found a few things. I'm not suppose to say anything. Neither was Barb, but by the time you read this & who would you tell anyway, Lynn & Bob & her parents sold the Masterson property to an oil co. But they kept some of it where the lockers are. By the time you read this it could be public knowledge. Imagine it was a tidy piece for the property.
Hatch Patch has strawberries for sale. We didn't get any yesterday because we had some from the store, but maybe this week we will. Nothing like home grown berries.
Dale had to see the Dr in Erie yesterday. He was home in time for lunch -- a 9:30 appt. -- so he missed a half day of work. They aren't very bush lately.
Thurs June 15
ESPN advertised Mets vs. Phillies baseball for Wed. nite, right up to 7 pm. And did they show the game? No! And I watched old sports news til 7:30 & no explanation why they didn't show it. I was very disappointed. But the Mets won & that is the main thing. Channel 15 will have them on Sat & Sun. when they play the Orioles at home. NY TV.
This A.M. after breakfast, Dale went in the basement to put his work shoes, etc. came back to get his snack & ice water & said, "I think we have a mouse in the basement." How he got in is beyond us. Dale left the back door opened a bit so he could run out. Some time later I shut the door & hoped it had exited. When I went for a shower I didn't see anything or hear any noises.
We got local strawberries from Hatch Patchg & this A.M. I made a strawberry pie. It looks good. I plan to grill pork chops, baked taters, corn pudding (not too hot yet for the oven) & applesauce & pie for dessert. Sounds good to me.
I called Gen & again she said "I wish you'd drop in and visit". I tried to tell her I'm too far away to drop in & I don't travel anymore. She doesn't understand I live in western Pa, a good day's drive.
After supper.
I told you Barb wanted more stuff for the rummage sale. When I quit working, Mr. McFate gave me a cooky jar. It looks like the Pillsbury Dough Boy but it is a numbered McCoy pottery cooky jar. The Chef. When Lynn saw it she said she'd check the Internet & it is worth $80-$100 & Barb was going to put $4.00 price on it. Now we'll take it home & put it on the shelf. Maybe we won't get that much but I want more than 4.00 for it. It is 24 yrs. old. I have things that were wedding gifts so maybe there is something worthwhile in the bunch.
This is all the news for this tie.

How was graduation? Is it hard to believe your "little" boy is grown up & out of high school?
This is Dale's long day & I'm always happy when deli beef is on sale. That's my menu tonight. Beef sandwiches & potato salad, homemade! I love easy meals. We went grocery shopping this A.M. Barb had to ride her bike yesterday.
Made pancakes for lunch with sausage & scrambled eggs for Dale. At Big Lots I found pancake mix by Betty Crocker & used it this noon. It was so easy -- just add 1 1/2 c. water to 2 c. mix & both Dale and I like how they came out.
Andy said he'd like to visit this summer. I know it is already a busy summer for you but if you can make it I've been thinking maybe you'd like to stay at Motel 6 (can't afford Holiday Inn!) It would be on me -- I didn't get to graduation & the money I would have spent on the trip I'll use to pay for the motel. Thought I'll tell you my thoughts before other plans are made -- where to stay, etc. Maybe you won't be up to a trip -- time will tell.
I'm watching a May West film. Cary Grant is in it -- he was really young then. Missed the first part.
You told me about JoAnna's 20th anniv. gift but you didn't tell me much about it. You went out to east, what you are. How did she like the gift?
They finally mowed the lawn at Jefferson School. It was getting so long. The first time this summer.
Today those teachers who used the computer were in an article in the paper. It wasn't porn but bad judgment. I'm sure the gossip was going around with 5 teachers out the last 2 weeks so the supt. had to do something about it. Scott said he had 2 of the teachers. One in health, one in Eng. a female. Kids are smart enough today to know who is missing. Kim said with the newer principal, discipline, etc. has really gone down. The sec'y left for another school because of the situation at Sheffield.
Last Sun. 3 were confirmed & we had a larger congregation for that. It was nice. Next Sun. we start the summer schedule -- 9:30 A.M. service.
I got some ground beef for hamburgers so I'd better take care of it. Mixing & freezing patties.
Wed. June 7
Last week Kim brought over the book "Marley & Me" by John Grogan, for me to read. I read it over the weekend & really enjoyed it. It was so funny in some part & sad in others. It was easy reading & so enjoyable. I'm sure you've heard of it. It is different from what you read, but I think you'd enjoy it. About an "oddball" dog & his doings, but a very faithful dog..
One of the things I hate to do in old age is dust. This A.M. I made myself dust downstairs. It's not as bad once I get started but it is getting started.
Last nite I watched college women softball. Arizona vs. Northwestern. I enjoyed it. Arizona won. Those gals do a good job playing softball. Attractive as well. A lot of blonds & some from a bottle.
Thurs aft. the 8th
We're having perfect weather -- no humidity. But rain & cooler weather is on the horizon.
We're going to the Mall tomorrow after I get my hair done. Then I'll mail this letter & a birthday card for Gen. Tomorrow is graduation in Warren & the last day of school. Teachers are just as happy.

Saturday, May 27, 2006
I couldn't decide if I should bake this A.M. or Mon. But Mon. is suppose to be in the 80's & this A.M. is cloudy so I made blueberry load & a pumpkin pie. I'm down to my last 2 Danish rolls & if I'm ambitious I'll start a recipe on Sun, get up early Mon. & bake the rolls. (I was!)
Asked Dale if he'd have Sat. off (his week to work Sat) & he said probably not. But he did. Seeing it is cloudy he decided to wash his car. According to Dale you never wash your car in the sun!
Yesterday when Warren & Anna picked me up, he said Anna didn't care where we ate (her turn to choose) so he chose the Chinese restaurant. I like to go there because you can choose what & how much you want. Some Chinese food doesn't appeal to me, bu9t there is variety. While we were sitting there in comes Larry & Mike Brindis. They go to lunch often on Fri. Larry's treat I'm sure as Mike doesn't have much money. Lar shook hands with Warren & Anna & talked a bit. Warren had gotten 3 $1.00 lottery tickets, passed them out & we scraped them off & I won $5.00. Warren gets half so I only get 2.50 but at least there was one winner, however small it was. We have fun reading the paper in the fortune cookies. I like to eat the crisp cooky.
Last nite Barb was ambitious. Changed & washed her sheets. Made her version of goulash & made peanut butter cookies using organic as much as possible. She doesn't always eat what I prepare. Fri. nite I ordered pizza, tonite we'll have hamburgers, etc., Sun chicken legs, & Mon. steaks. Plan to make potato salad on Mon.
Remember what the Dr. said, "You had made surgery," so don't rush your recovery! As you wrote, you are 56 years old! Have to get a little motherly advice in.
Thurs. I made a fruit salad & the watermelon & strawberries tasted so good.
Barb hasn't been able to ride her bike as often as she hoped, due to the weather. Maybe this weekend she can make up for it.
One of Kim's friend's daughter is getting married in June so Kim is hosting a shower for 15 this aft. She plans on chicken salad, which she ordered from a store, bakery rolls, fruit salad including strawberries & watermelon, punch & an ordered cake. So most of the food is ready made but she'd have to get the house in order, etc. so she is a bush gal. And Sun. she'll play golf in a tournament for the dog pound. They are building a larger building for the dog pound. She'll be gone most of Sun -- there is a dinner when awards are given out, etc. She'll have Mon. to rest up & then school
Forgot to mention after lunch, we went to the new Dollar store in the same area as the restaurant. Still empty spaces to fill up. They have some good prices & everything is light, airy & clean looking. We both shopped a bit.
Finished my puzzle Thurs. nite. It is such a pretty picture. Barb started one she bought.
When we were at the Bon Ton we looked at hanging chimes for the porch. Kim & Lar gave me one & Barb said we needed another one to balance the picture. So we found one & the nice part they were 60% off so it was less than 10.00. One chimes, one twirls in the wind. We really had wind last weekend.
Time to think of lunch.
Sun. nite
I'm sitting on the porch enjoying the nice evening. This aft when Barb was out & Dale sunning himself, I turned on the kitchen TV & watched the Mets & set my rolls for tomorrow A.M. I can enjoy a fresh roll with my coffee. I fixed homefried chicken legs in the oven & ended up with a hot kitchen. Tho't we could eat in the dining room under the fan, but remembered the NASCAR race started at 5:30 pm & Dale would want to watch it. Barb bro't a fan down from the attic & that helped a bit.
The new neighbor across the st. cleared a lot of the old shrubbery & now it is nice to sit on the porch & look across the st.
The pastor's baby was 1 year old on your anniversary. I sent a card with a gift of money. People were so good to us, so I felt right in doing this. This A.M. she told me how much they appreciated it & I know she means it.
Our new organist starts next Sun. Just hope we can keep him. After church this A.M., we had a brief mtg. to accept a bid to paint the exterior of the church windows, trim, pillars, etc. No problem it was OK'ed. It will be some over $3,000.00 One bid was $8000.00. Donald Gustafson, Jr. will do the job. A Christmas & Easter member.
We had some extra flowers so Barb planted 2 pots & they are on the front porch. She also planted the barrel by the front steps. Begonias & a vine. I got 45 cosmos plants, old time favorites, & they are on the porch with 2 begonias & a petunia plant. They will fill out as they begin to grow. And I see rose buds on the plants between the garage & the back door. I love roses.
Does Andy think the Braves can catch the Mets. I hope not! The Mets have to give more support to Pedro M. so he can win a game after pitching so well.
Someone up the st. has to mow his lawn so I'll go inside -- out of noise reach.
Wed. last day of May!
This A.M. Barb & I went to Jamestown. I was looking for a pair of tan shoes & ended up buying a pr. of navy shoes. Again everything is the mule shoe but not for me. At Sears I saw a pr. of navy low heels & I grabbed them. Haven't seen much in navy. I do have a pr. of tan shoes I can wear. We didn't eat out. Went to Wegman's & then home.
We've had the high heat & it is wearing me out. Thunderstorms will bring cooler weather tomorrow.
This A.M. I cleaned the bathroom as I knew I wouldn't want to clean this aft. I've been watching Hou. at StL & the score is tied in the 10th. I don't' know why ESPN has to have 3 men in the booth & all they do is talk & tell their views. It's on mute except for Jon & Joe Sun nites.
I haven't turned on the A.C., just have a fan in the kitchen & the ceiling fan in the D.R.
This is Dale's early week & when he comes home he changes to shorts & sits in the sun. He likes the heat.
Fri. June 2
Last nite Kim stayed til about 8:15, talking. She finally realized she can't take Torey on long walks. Just a couple of blocks now. Think she realizes Torey is on his "last legs". What a sad day it will be when he is no longer with us.
Earlier in the year she had mentioned 6 teachers (1 at Sheffield) had been caught exchanging porn material on their computers. 5 men, 1 woman. Their consequences: the last 2 weeks they are out of school with no pay. She doesn't know if more will come -- punishment, that is, such as losing their jobs. The one from S.H.S had finished his qualifications to became a principal & now that won't happen. Talk about kids not thinking of what can happen -- adults surely should.
Barb is organizing a garage sale for Lynn. Something Lynn doesn't like to do. She started yesterday & just left to spend a couple more hours sorting things out. Barb could be a professional organizer -- she's telling me I should be more organized. At this late date, I think I'm pretty well organized. Sometimes her room looks like she should practice what she preaches. All is well here.

Yolanda, Mardi's mom, called today. She heard from Mardi & wondered how you are doing. I told her everything was fine -- she sends you her best wishes.
Dale was home at 5:30, early for him -- he loves his job so much. Ha, ha! After a little rest and is now cleaning his car. In the summer he doesn't want to eat til 8 pm. So his dinner is in the fridge. I was eating when he came home. Barb went to Wegman's, after she was through with Scott. She will take care of her meal, most likely a salad. Dale will eat at 6 pm on Thurs. when Lar & Kim come.
We will have beautiful weather for Memorial Day weekend. Finally it is warming up. I can put a lighter blanket on my bed. I've been using my elec. blanket thru the first part of May Y&^ the furnace has been coming on. Now no more for awhile, I hope.
Buffalo is one happy city because of their hockey team. For people who can't get or afford tickets, they can watch the game in a big screen set up in one of the parks. It will be a nice night to be outside. They are charging 2.00 & the money goes to a charity, mostly likely a soup kitchen.
For 2 nites Barb took the flowering plants inside because we might have a freeze. We didn't but she didn't ant to take a chance.
I'm enclosing 2 coupons you should be able to use.
I don't remember much about Mother's Day. A couple stand out. Once Dale gave me a miniature loving cup saying "World's Best Mother". I still have it. I think he got it for me because Jeff Y. was getting one for Sylvia. Next was when you all were gone & Dad gave me a pretty silver necklace. I mentioned I liked it but never tho't he'd get it for me, so I was surprised.
One of my favorite meals is meat balls or loaf, scalloped potatoes & green beans. Dale also likes it. He is pretty good to like most of my meals. Once in awhile there are "duds", esp. if I try a new recipe. Then I throw that recipe away -- it won't get used again.
The obit in today's paper listed Joanne Scordo, but didn't have a full obit. I'm sure she was the phy ed teacher's wife. You remember Mr. Scordo.
Had my teeth cleaned yesterday. My dentist wasn't in so the gal checked my teeth & didn't see anything or such. Dr. Walters is my dentist.
I almost forgot -- Last week's subway series in NYC. The Mets took 2 out of 3 & should have won all 3. It was exciting. Sun. nite I stayed up way past my bedtime. I had to see if the Mets could hold their lead & they did.
Mon. Nite I watched N.Y. Yankees at Boston on ESPN & tonite is the 3rd game in the series on ESPN. It seems like ESPN is the Yankees' personal TV station. They seem to be shown all the time. Maybe I'm just jealous. I don't see the Mets that often. I root for Boston. Big surprise!!
Yesterday I called Larry & wished them a Happy Anniv. & said they'd get their card on Thurs. when they are here. Torey is showing his age -- doesn't like to walk much anymore.
Dale said starting in Aug, their checks from work will be direct deposit into their banks. Some guys aren't happy with the move but I guess it is easier in the office. It doesn't bother Dale. He doesn't need his paycheck like married guys do. Some guys, when they get their pay, spend the nite in the bars getting drunk. I'd hate that if I were the wife.
We'll have some good meals over the holidays but not much going o. Barb will ride her bike, & most likely Dale will start his sun tanning.
Patty Welsh Phillips gets married this coming Sat. 2pm at church. I'm very happy for her -- he seems like a nice fellow. Comes to church with her & works in the same office she does. He must be divorced as he has a son.
John Wertz, a classmate of Barb's shot himself in front of his wife. They lived next door to Betty Casey on Dartmouth St. She said that caused a lot of excitement on her street. Tough on the wife.
Fri A.M. the 26th
Just home from getting my hair done. Hollertzs have to come to Wrrn, so they'll pick me up for lunch. Later Barb & I will to go the Mall.
This is your busy weekend. Kim is busy also, hosts a bridal show3er for a friend's daughter on Sat. Sun she is up early to play golf -- benefit the new bldg. for stray animals, etc.

The Mets came on at 8 pm & they are at St. Louis. I washed my face, etc. so I can stay up until 10:30 & then go to bed.
I'm enclosing Chiodo's menu. We really enjoyed our dinners. Barb especially. It was a special for Mother's Day he doesn't have on the menu very often. Usually she has some complaint about the food. Not this time. Dale & I had sandwiches with my pork leftover -- huge servings -- & it was good. Dale really liked it. He said his ribs had a "woodsy" taste he didn't like that much. Kim tasted Lar's & really like it & she's not a big meat eater. We were all satisfied -- except. There was a Pentecostal group having dinner & they had a 20 min or so musical presentation, guitar, elec. which they didn't need in a small area. It was hard to talk above the music. Then they had testimonies abut how hey came to fat. They should have chosen a private dining area or had it catered. I'm surprised they chose a place that serves alcohol but things can't be perfect.
Am also enclosing a picture of the '56 flood. Barb tho't you'd be interested in seeing it. Someone must have given it to Dad. Before the dam was built.
Called Millie last nite -- she is not I ha flooded area just a lot of rain.
Linda is in Chicago this week. (I didn't realize he retired 3 years ago.) Last Sun A.M. when she got back from breakfast there was a note saying call your neighbor. She couldn't imagine why. She found out 6 cars in her neighborhood sitting in the driveways were damaged -- windows broken, scratches, etc. She has a garage but doesn't use it in the summer. Bet she wishes she did now. It will be repaired.
Noticed in the USA Today state news that your ex friend Chuck Chvala now has "home detention as part of his 9 month sentence". It is a sad situation.
My puzzle is slowly coming together. I like this one & will finish it. Might take 2-3 weeks but who is in a rush.
Dale gave me an impatiens hanging plant & yours & his are on the front of the porch facing n. yard & then decided on the porch facing E. Hope I have my directions straight. The flowers look so nice.
You asked if I could find the church & parsonage on the G. F. map you sent. I'm not sure I can.
Fri. Just got back from getting my hair done.
Barb said Scott showed her some porn pictures & a bad poem he got on his computer. She told Lynn & when Lynn confronted him he showed a stick figure instead of the real thing. So Barb had a talk with Scott & he got rid of the porn. He is smart enough to find that but not smart when it comes to studying. He doesn't want to be a nerd. Crazy kids. Scott can't keep things to himself (which is good) & tells Barb instead of his parents. He doesn't want to get yelled at.
Mets vs. Yankees at Shea this weekend. Hope the Mets hitters show up for these games. All are on TV. N.Y., Fox, & ESPN.
All is well.

Oh no! No TV. It is all "snow". Something needs to be fixed & I hope it is fast. It happened as I was doing dishes -- rather pots and pans.
Last Fri. nite the Braves were at the Mets & on TBS, so I was in front of the TV hoping for a fast game. Just the opposite -- it went 12 inning before the Mets won & I stayed up. Dale didn't work on Sat. When I got to bed at midnight I couldn't fall asleep. Up at 1 A.M. to go to the bathroom & then I slept fitfully til 6 A.M. Made myself stay in bed til 7 A.M. Another interesting game on Sat. & the Mets lost today big. It was a crazy game.
Sat. A.M. there was a box & Barb tho't it was for Dale but it turned out to be my Penney's order. It was behind the glider & beet it come on Fri. when we were out so he put it out of sight. I got a longer lace tablecloth & I like it. It's on my table. The chair pad & back are thicker but maybe it will flatten out a bit. I like it -- it makes me sit up straighter.
Warren H. called today. He has a 1:30 dentist appt. so they'll come at 11 A.M. & we'll go out to lunch. After the dentist appt. are over, I'll probably not see them so often. It's an hour trip one way.
Last Ts. we had some overripe bananas so I decided to make a banana cake with a recipe from Ethel Johnson. The first time I made it, it came out so nice -- this time I was disappointed. Not light & nice. We still ate a piece. This week I make a carrot cake for Lar's birthday. I'd better do a good job on that.
Did you notice the Buffalo hockey team made the playoffs & are in the 2nd division after beating Phila. Now they play a Canadian team, & won the 1st game. It is Ottawa. Go Sabers!
I haven't taken the elec. blanket off the bed yet as it cools off after midnight. Turned the furnace off for a couple of days but yesterday I was cold so turned it back on. It went on this A.M., but not during the day. The gas bills should be lower during the summer. Gas bills at church have surely wrecked their budget. I'm sure many churches have that problem.
May 9th Tues.
We had a nice lunch yesterday. Warren & Anna picked me up at 11 A.M. & we went to Perkins. His appt was at 1:30 so this time we ate first. I always have a good time when I'm with Warren & Anna. I got my Mon. chores done in a hurry. Just before I left, I put the 3rd load, the towels, in the drier.
We put off grocery shopping til today. And then I forgot to get carrots even tho it was on my list. But Barb bought some bagged lettuce & when she went to use it tonite, it wasn't that good, even tho the date was 5/15. She plans to return it & then she can pick up carrots for me. Need them for the cake I have to make.
I'm watching the Diamondbacks at Pittsburgh & Pitts. is ahead 1-0 after 1 inning. Wonder how long that will last! Jim Leyland is doing OK with the Detroit team.
At lunch yesterday, I had an omelet with a blueberry muffin & they are huge & very good, the muffin.
Sat. May 13
Thank you for the beautiful Mother's Day plant & the cards. They are appreciated very much. The plant is already hanging on the front porch.
Yesterday I had a nice visit with my friends. They have a nice luncheon menu & of course the fellowship is great. We plan to meet at Holiday Inn on July 7th. This way I can go.
Larry had a nice birthday. The menu was steak & baked pot,. tossed salad & carrot cake for dessert. Your gift didn't arrive til Fri. so we'll give it to Larry tonite. We are going out to eat to celebrate Mother's Day. We're going to Chiodi's, my choice. We get a nice dinner there. Have a 7 pm reservation.
Dale worked this A.M., Barb is riding her bike & I'm watching TV. Barb gave me a new puzzle so I started working on that. This A.M. I made a blueberry bread.
We're getting much needed rain but no rain so far today. It is sometimes cloudy, sometimes sunny. Things are really growing now.
We didn't go to the Mall this Fri or Sat. so this won't be mailed til Mon. I could mail it by the Post Office but it isn't collected 'til Mon. so there is no difference.
The boys' car is so cute. Yours very meaningful.

What a beautiful day(s) we've been having. Last Sat. Barb gave the van a good washing. Wanted to wax it but worked in the garden instead. Preparing for the flowers we'll get. She also worked outside the house facing west, trimming some of the shrubbery. And last Sat. she also washed the front porch getting it ready for summer furniture. You ask "What did Dale do?" He had a headache -- it was his Sat to work from 8-12 & in the aft. took it easy.
Last fall Barb planted some daffodil bulbs but only 4 came up & they are very small. One is blooming & I see another bud. Maybe they were planted too deep.
Lynn's parents are at the Lake so they are going there tonite to see them. Scott likes to wear his pants low on the hips. Barb said to him why don't you change to nicer clothes & surprise your parents? I don't want to do that." Barb doesn't yell at him but talks nice to him. Then she took the dogs out & got ht email. When she went in the house she saw that Scott had changed his clothes. So he listened. He likes Barb & tells her things he'd never tell his mother.
I called in an order to Penney's. A 2 piece set for the rocker you gave us. I sit there a lot & the present set has gotten a lot of wear. Also ordered a lace tablecloth. And they had a special. Spend 25.00 & get free postage. Both are sale items.
This is Dale's early week & he just came home. He plans to mow the lawn -- it grows fast.
Barb & I plan to go to Jamestown tomorrow. We'll have lunch at the Red Lobster. Barb has some birthday money to spend. I'd like a pair of tan shoes if I see any I like. They have a discount shoe store there. We'll also stop at WalMart -- Barb's idea!
I don't know what Andy will want for graduation but I plan to send a check. He can choose for himself. Ditto for your anniversary. Twenty years -- where has the time gone?
Fri. May 12th, I'll be going out to lunch with Bensons, Hollertzs & Shaffers from Ohio -- at Warren Holiday Inn. Haven't seen Shaffers for a long time. They live just over the Pa line so it's easy for them to get here.
Wed, May 3
We went to Jamestown this A.M. Before we left I got the kitchen garbage ready for tomorrow & put a swiss steak supper in the crockpot. Just have to make salads. First we went to WalMart -- they have a new store (in the same location) & it is nice. Barb chose some petunias for her pots & I chose marigolds. At BonTon I found a sweater I liked -- to wear now -- pink with colors of trim. Hope others don't choose the same thing. Also got a couple more tank tops -- on sale, and a knit shirt also on sale. I told Barb don't let me spend any more on tops. Yesterday I sent an order (telephone) for the tablecloth & rocker set I want. Fun to spend, spend, spend! As long as I can pay for it I'm OK. We had lunch at the Red Lobster & enjoyed it.
Barb really has the outside landscaping looking good. Now she doesn't say Dale should help any more. She realizes he is on his feet all day & says his long legs make it harder for him to kneel & do the work. Getting things in order doesn't take that long. The lawn moving & sweeping up goes on all summer. He does the edging so he does his share.
Dale just came home & as soon as he changes his clothes, he goes & sits outside in the sun. Starting his tan early. We expect showers tomorrow, but they are needed.
Tonite & tomorrow nite I can watch the Mets, thanks to Pittsburgh playing at Shea.
Fri. A.M.
Had my hair cut & set & now I reread your letter while drinking coffee. Glad to hear news of the Nelson families, i.e., Carolyn's husband & the wedding, etc. Good to know you are rid of the catheter & that all is going well. It will soon be a memory the way time flies.
The flower pots Barb filled are looking nice. We didn't get the showers they forecast & now there is a fire ban.
On Fri, I don't do much -- 2 loads of wash -- just take it easy after a busy week.

I'm sure you noticed the Brewers beat the Braves. The only bad thing about it, the Mets go to Atlanta & I'm sure the Braves will be thinking "We can beat those Mets." Fri. nite it will be Smoltz against Pedro M. But it won't be on TV for us to see. At least the Mets are still on top in their division.
In the paper there was an article about the Indian tribes building golf courses near their casinos to draw more people. This one was in Minn. They are well planned courses & people love to play them. (My mind works faster than the pen.) They don't make money but people are drawn to the casino & most likely can't resist a little gambling.
I made a new blueberry coffee cake recipe & it is a good one. It called for 3 cups of flour so I used my angel food pan to bake it. Dave gave his approval.
Warren & Anna came to Warren today & after his dental appt., they picked me up & we had lunch at the Plaza. Warren suggested we go there. The bad thing is that the lady in the next booth smoked & that spoiled it for me. And I don't think their food is as good as it used to be.
I see that Favre will be back with Green Bay for another year.
I can't get over how much Eddie has changed since I last saw him. I didn't recognize him at first & then realized it was Eddie. You have 2 handsome sons. And nice ones as well.
Last Sun. we had a meeting after church to discuss the organ. Ants (carpenter) have gotten into the organ chamber & eating at the parts. Ants have been seen in the kitchen so an exterminator was called & when all the ants are gone they will have to take out some of the pipes, clean up the dust & insulate that part of the roof with foam that sets, to hep the situation. Then replace the pipes, tune the organ, etc. Cost around $3,000. Albert Johnson left money to the church to be used for music, so they have that to use. Never thought ants would bother the organ.
Nothing much on TV that interests me so I turned to the History Channel & am watching a program on concrete & its uses. Doesn't sound interesting but it is.
About 6 weeks ago Barb saw a top she liked & said I could get her that for her birthday. It was on sale, I got it, put it aside & after she opened her birthday gifts, she said "where is my top". I had forgotten & on top of that couldn't remember where I put it. Finally yesterday Barb found it in a bag behind my bed. Another senior moment!!
Today Warren said he left his wallet at home on the dining room table. He couldn't understand why he did that. Anna had money. See what you have to look forward to!!!
Last Sun. Dale went to Jamestown & Sam Baughman called from N. Carolina & he wasn't here so I talked to him for a few minutes. He & his wife were at the beach & just wanted to rub it in a little. They like living down there with the warm weather. I told him when you're in the middle of a hot spell in the summer, you will miss our cooler breezes. He didn't think so.
Back to Warren & Anna. They are concerned about their future if something should happen to stop them from their travels, or if one is left alone. They think I'm lucky to have Barb & Dale with me. I am, but I still hope they will find someone to love.
Back to my program, they can recycle concrete to make more concrete. That is interesting. Frank Lloyd Wright used a lot of concrete in his day. It is happening more today in house building.
Thurs aft. Apr 27
Your letter came today & I read it eagerly to see the details of your operation. I'm glad you told me all the details, catheter & all. By now, you are feeling much better & are realizing it's not that bad.
Made a banana cream pie for dessert tonite. We're having stuffed pork chops, Andy's favorite.
Better get busy.
Glad things are going so well.

It's a hug with a fold in the middle.
It's a cloudy cay so I took a nap after lunch. This A.M. we went to the Mall. In the summer Kim has friends at camp for meals & they are usually serve yourself or cafeteria style. I saw a dish caddy that holds the plates & silverware & I got one for Kim for her birthday. I'll add napkins & paper plates -- pretty ones -- to add to it. I think she'll like it. It is always hard to know what to get.
Dale started cleaning in the attic. Things get dusty. As far as I'm concerned, he can clean all he wants.
I'm watching men's senior golf on TV. It is interesting.
Mailed a letter this A.M. And since you're home next week I'll mail this note on Mon. when we get groceries.
Just to let you know we're thinking of you & that the healing process is coming along fine. I think of all of you often during the day & not just because you're healing. I do it everyday anyway.
We can see leaves coming out on the rose bushes. Barb is starting to think about flowers for the pots, & getting more potting soil, etc. It will soon be planting time.
Just a little note to say hello!
Almost forgot -- Betty Casey told me Mike had a heart attack. It is serious. Remember he lives in Wisc. now -- has for a long time.

You sounded good, Paul, on the phone, so I hope things are improving day by day. I think of you all a lot.
Today is Barb's birthday. I made a carrot cake -- her wish. And we're having the chicken with the mushrooms & cheese, another favorite. Green beans, 'taters & fruit salad. I also baked the choc. cooky dough from the freezer while the oven was in use. My favorites now -- with Andes mint topping that melts & make them look so nice. That was the end of it so I'll have to make another batch to have on hand. Sheila told me she freezes cooky dough so I tried. It is great to have on hand.
Last Fri my washer blew a fuse -- only with new wiring we don't have fuses. Barb said she knew what to do. But it didn't work. Dale came home & said you have to push the nob to off & then turn it to on. But I never tired it again. On Mon I called the repair man. There are 2 sides -- one for regular wash & one for delayed wash. I used that side & finished my laundry. He couldn't find any reason for 1 side to work & not the other. Yesterday he came again, filled the washer, turned it on & waited for the machine to stop. It didn't. I told him we didn't turn the nob to "off" before we tried to set it. And after Dale told us what to do, we never tested it. "It's so nice to have a man around the house--" So I wasted money because I didn't try it again. Oh well, how I know who to call if something goes wrong.
Called Millie on her birthday. They celebrated on East Sun. at Larry's place at the Cape. Allen stayed around for a couple of days & took Millie to lunch on Mon. & she enjoyed that. She said she never thought she'd live so long. Each year she said she slows down. I know that feeling.
The Mets plan to build a new stadium to be completed in '09. Wonder if I'll still be around to see it on TV. They lost their 1st series & of course it had to be to Atlanta.
Barb saw the cutest dog sitting by a flower pot that says "welcome". The dog looks like Torey & it has such a nice expression on its face. We got it for Lar's birthday. A yard decoration.
At Valentines & Easter I always get favorite candies to put by the plates. But I forgot to do it last Sun. -- a senior moment -- so they'll get them tonite. M&M's for Kim, Hershey milk choc. nuggets for Dale (my favorite as well), & Hershey's dark choc. miniatures for Barb & Lar.
Dale mowed the lawn for the first time last Mon. We've had a series of beautiful days but starting tomorrow we are in for rainy days. But it makes the grass nice & green.
Fri. the 21st
We had a nice birthday dinner. I gave her money & Dale did & so did Lynn so she can shop for what she wants. Larry said he'd like the same meal Dale had except for the cake. He wants carrot cake. Then the birthdays will be over until fall. Oh no, Kim's is in June.
It won't be long before all of your festivities are upon you, the way time flies. May will be here in 9 days. Wow! Take care of yourself so for all these parties your strength will be back. But you are in good health so that means a lot.
Barb has stated her bike riding & enjoys it.
Sheila told me this A.M. that Angie Pellegrino's daughter & boyfriend bo't Collins' house. They plan to be married this summer. Here I thought a family with children would move in. Leave it to the beauty operators or hairdressers to get all the news.
Dale said another guy at work is having marital problems. Men gossip just as much as women, I guess.

Yesterday Lynn called Barb. They had a bad weekend. Bob's heart acted up & spent a nite in the hospital. He has to take high blood pressure meds. During the nite, their phone rang. Lynn wondered if something happened to her parents. It was Scott calling from his room saying he didn't feel good. She got him to the bathroom but he upchucked on the bathroom floor. They had to remove the rug & clean the floor but it still smelled. He did go to school even tho he still didn't feel good. So he skipped track practice. Lynn told him Marisa could pick him up after school. "No, said Scott." I ant Barb to take me home." So she helped him study for a test. Today there is an away track meet but he didn't go -- he is afraid to ride a bus.
Dale said by fixing his Monte Carlo, he gave himself a birthday present. I'm making a sweet German choc. cake, his choice, for his birthday.
Enjoyed reading your letter & hearing all about Disney World. I know it isn't the place for me -- too much walking, too many people. It is for younger people. I'm content where I am.
This A.M. I washed the kitchen floor & dusted downstairs. After lunch we got groceries.
The Mets play at Wash. & it is an aft. game. I'm trying to see the score but the commercials interfere. Mets 7, wn. 1, final. The Mets are winning!
Today the new neighbors (Carey) started in on fixing up the landscaping. All the trees (shrubbery) have been taken out. They are starting from scratch. By our property, it will be lawn. It looks nice with those hemlocks taken down. We're anxious to see how they'll landscape it. Bet it will cost plenty. He has a 6 figure salary, I'm sure.
I got a turkey breast for Easter. Lar & Kim will be here. Might try a cheesecake recipe for dessert.
Last Sun. I called Gen. She said she saw me in church a few Sun. ago. I said it must be someone who looks like me. Then she wondered why I didn't come over. I said I"m too far away for a drop in visit. She thought I was in the area.
Barb got her bicycle "tuned up". So now she is ready to start bike riding. Lately she has been walking outside. Yesterday we had blue, blue skies & warm temps. Even warmer today but cloudy skies. Nice.
Larry has started his "2nd job", working for himself. He usually has a couple of big jobs he plans for over the winter. He does OK as he has regular customers for trimming, etc.
Thurs. evening the 13th
WE had a nice birthday dinner. He likes the pants & knit shirt I got him. He tried them on & they fit perfectly. I asked him not to wait too long to try them on in case I had to return them. Barb gave him a CD & a Dale Earnhardt shirt. Kim & Lar gave him an auto washing kit. Lar got one for himself & tho't Dale would like it as much as Lar does. I'm sure he thanked you for your gift when you called him on Mon. Next birthday Barb -- she told me I could give her money -- then she can get what she likes.
No school Wed-Mon -- 12th-17th. East vacation.
Yesterday Kim, Betsy, & Michelle went to the Indian Casino. Michelle won $1000.00 on the 5 cent machine. They always divide their winnings. Kim gave some of hers to the Cancer Society. Today they went to Erie & Kim spent her Christmas gift card from you folks.
Mets won again today. WOW!! Now they go to Milwaukee. Barb went online & got the Mets TV schedule for 2006 on SB11. Channel 15 for us.
Collins' house has a "sold" sign on the For Sale sign. On Conewango between 3rd & Verbeck. Lar said Patterson's house up the st. will be going up for sale. He is the funeral director. They will be moving to one of the Carolinas, to be closer to their 2 daughters.
Marisa's "naughty" boyfriend stole $35,000 so he is really in trouble now. She still doesn't want to let go of him but Lynn hopes this will be the end of it. She will never change him.
Sheila & Sue added another girl to their salon, so now there are 4 gals plus 1 part time. They don't want to get too big but if they have a following that will make it nice.
I'm watching Phillies at Atlanta. Phillies won last nite (so did the Pirates who came from behind vs. L.A.) & are ahead tonite. I'm sure they miss their pitcher coach Leo Muscilli (sp) who went to Baltimore. Mets to go Atlanta Sat & Sun Apr 29 &30. The Mets should do better (I hope) this year. Atlanta just has "regular" pitching now.
Soon my bedtime.

Tuesday, April 4, 2006
Yesterday I watched the Met's home opener & they won. Full house with cheering fans welcoming the old & new players. It was exciting. Last nite I watched San Diego beat San Fran. It is good have baseball again.
Barb is going for a walk. It turned cold overnite & it is windy & raw today.
Barb doesn't have a printer so she was going thru the email, erasing, when she saw a picture of Andy's & figured it was a letter from you but she had erased most of is not realizing it was from you.
Last week we were discussing TV & Lar figured they have 12 TVs between the 2 places. Dale can't go to sleep without the TV. If he forgets to set the "off", it si going when I get up during the night.
Last Fri. we went to Jamestown & I found a top for summer -- just what I wanted. It will be cool for hot summer Sundays. Has like a cape sleeve & it just what I wanted. And to top it off, it is reversible. Different pattern on each side. Guess you can tell "it is just what I wanted"! But it is so hard to find anything, guess I go overboard when I find what I'm dreaming of. While shopping a younger lady passing by said "Wonder what happened to dresses." That is a good question. The last one I bot was 4 years ago.
I can't believe East is almost here. Hope we will have warmer weather.
Did you get the start of a tan in Fla? I know you had a great time.
Barb said the sign on Ryberg's house said "SOLD". Collins' house is still "pending". 2 more on 3rd to sell.
The plant that came to "The Nelsons" at Christmas had an amaryllis bulb in it -- now it has 3 beautiful flowers in bloom. There were 2 shoots but one died. I'm glad one lived as it is such a showy bloom. I wonder if we can save the bulb & have it grown again next year. I'll have to ask Larry.
The $1000.00 insurance policy my Dad started for me at age 20, now is worth $11,000.00 Less cash value but I'd never cash it in.
Today I heard that details between Katie Couric & CBS are being worked out, so you'll be unhappy Paul. But I bet you never watch CB S news programs. Barb keeps me informed on the pros & cons, mostly cons on what the GOP are doing. Most of it goes in one ear & out the other.
Thurs. A.M., the 6th
Wed AM, the telephone rang at 9 A.M. & it was Warren H. saying they were coming to Warren for a dental appt. Was I free to go out to lunch & you know my answer. Of course! We went to Perkins & had a good time talking & laughing. We enjoy each other's company & always have a good time. Warren has to come back the 26th of Apr. & if nothing interferes, we'll have lunch again. He is getting new uppers -- the reason for his visits to Warren.
Both yesterday & today Dale isn't home for lunch. They have it at work, supplied by the owners & hear about new equipment needed to work on cars, etc.
Fri A.M. the 7th
Last nite I watched the Mets vs. Washington. What a game: rhubarbs, hit hitters, 4 by the Mets pitchers, home plate umpire getting hit by a foul ball int he throat. It started to swell & he found it hard to talk. So another ump had to suit up & that took awhile. At 10:30 I went5 to bed with 1 inning to go. I figured the Mets could win as the score was 10-5.
Also watched the golf in the aft, the Master's Tournament and what a beautiful golf course.
So Katie Couric will go to CBS. Lynn's mother is very disappointed as she had watched CBS since Walter Cronkite & doesn't appreciate Katie C. being hired. I'm sure there are a lot who don't like it.
Kim didn't come last nite as she had a meeting to go to. Larry gave Dale a hair cut. Brab tr4ims her hair. She said if I don't like it, I have no one to blame. She does a nice job.
Last nite announcers at the games were Joe Morgan & Chris Berman & they did a good job. That's because Joe knows more than Chris & he let Joe do the talking. Otherwise He'll take over & talk, talk, talk. Joe & John are the best -- Sun nite games. According to this Nelson!
Soon lunch time & I'm "talked out".
Have a nice Easter. Our thoughts & prayers will be with you Paul & JoAnna on the 17th.

Barb & I went to the Chinese buffet tonite. She liked it & of course I do. Then we went to the Mall & got Dale's birthday present. He said he'd like another pair of pants, so I got him a pr. of Hagger's slacks in a bark color 34-34. The Lee's pant fit very good but they just had the lighter color, so I hope these fit just as well. Also a knit shirt that matched in a stripe. It's not loud so he should like it. Light tan background with a stripes that matches the pants. I stopped at Arby's & picked up 2 sandwiches for Sale & I'll fix French fries to go with them. It's his late Tues.
Dale put in P.C. pipe in the kitchen so no more leaking.
I was surprised you spent every Sun. at Edna's when you were in Spfld. I don't remember hearing that before. I'm sure she looked forward to having you there. Also remember Johnson's Bookstore -- we used to browse there.
Last month I made a white cake & it was really good & didn't get stale. Now I can't find where I put the recipe. I've looked & looked & can't find it. Tried another recipe but it isn't as good. I'm great at losing recipes!
The crossword puzzle you mentioned -- pot luck offering -- around here it would be rice pudding or Swedish meatballs.
Around here, they are hoping that an Applebee's will come in the new building we're getting -- i.e. Walmart & Lowe's. You're so lucky to have a Target. I wish one would come to Jamestown. There were rumors one was coming but it never worked out.
Thurs a.m. at 11:30 I'm getting a permanent. Sheila was away -- Las Vegas -- last week so I had to wait until Thurs. for an opening. They are 5 gals now but one gal only works Wed. & Thurs.
This A.M. I woke up early 5 A.M. & finally got up & went downstairs. By the time Dale left, I felt tired so I slept in the chair for 30 minutes. Then I got dressed, etc. I set dinner rolls & made a batch of choc. cookies. Baked 24 cookies & froze the dough for later baking. It is handy to have it in the freezer, but I must remember to take the dough out of the freeze the nite before I want to bake the next day.
Barb & Dale listen to the Wrrn radio & say they play good oldies & rock that they enjoy. They don't ever play any music older people enjoy. Barb also said, she read people are watching TV but more of the older series instead of the newer ones.
I have Thur's menu planned but not dessert. I have to know since I get a perm & that breaks up my day. It will be so nice to have it trimmed & curled again.
Apr. 3rd there will be baseball games to watch. While watching ESPN, a couple of announcers said they think the Mets have a good chance to be winners. Wouldn't that be nice -- my fingers are crossed!
Thurs the 30. Got a perm today & it looks nice. Glad not to have it hanging on my neck.
Want to finish this & mail it tomorrow when we go to Jamestown. Got your letter today & I see this is your last nite. I know you've had a great time & I'm sure Andy enjoyed his baseball experience & Eddie enjoyed Disney World.

Last week Dale worked on the Blazer, got it fixed, so it works good again (drives is the word). That cheered him up so he won't take the Monte Carlo out if we have snow.
Last week Blanche Jenkins (1st Lutheran) called me up. She had seen Rose, who was alert that day. She asked Blanch if she knew how I was. The reason for the call as she makes calls every week. But Rose did wonder if Jim was still living. And she was back in the Alzheimer's ward, which is kept locked. Kim said she heard Karen is back in Warren. Yesterday Blanche called again to say she couldn't see Rose because too many had the flu & they were limiting visitation . She also said a Pastor David Blank, who served Sheffield & Ludlow as his first call, accepted a call to First Luth. 6 votes against him. It will be 2 yrs in June since the former pastor left, so they are happy. She think he will work out OK. I guess a couple of wives nixed their husbands from coming to smalltown Warren.
One of the recent local papers told about the library's website on old time Warren -- its beginnings. Maybe you read the article & learned about it.
Thank you so much for the photo album of Andy's playing days. It was fun looking thru it. Hard to imagine him 6'3" & 230 lbs.
The picture of the Forest Park library brought back pleasant memories. That is where I got my first library card. Near Forest Park Jr Hi where we went to school.
I know Millie was glad to leave Spfld because of its decline, etc. I always read about Mass. in the USA Today state section & recently it told of the petty destruction of schools. It used to be a nice city to live in. The "X" was very familiar as we walked to the movie theater lots of Sat Aft. Millie got her hair "done" at a shop in that are. Can't remember the name of the theater.
Last week Barb saw a suit at Bon Ton she tho't I would like. Mon. we went to the Mall & I tried it on but I didn't like how it looked on me. Another disappointment.
When we walked (Spfld. again), first it was the tracks (train) we crossed, then White St. area, then the "X", then the library or the school. We weren't quite far enough in mileage to ride the school bus. One year we got a ride with a friend. Otherwise we walked. In high school we rode the city buss & got discount tickets. You kids were lucky we were close to Jefferson & Beaty. You rode with friends or Dad drove you. Now all grad school kids are bussed to the new school.
Yesterday the most piercing sound, sounded in our house. We remembered Dale put a device under the kitchen sink to alert one to leaking water. We couldn't find it so I called Dale at work &^ he told me where it was & we stopped the noise. What a relief. It is battery operated so it isn't attached to anything. It happened once before when Dale was home & it took him a few minutes to remember what it was.
In the Apr. 18th Family Circle, I copied 3 recipes that appealed to me. New potatoes & spinach bake, a strawberry rhubarb cheese cake, & blueberry-maple syrup for pancakes. Perkins has a blueberry syrup I like when I order pancakes or waffles -- if we eat there. You mix blueberries & maple syrup, heat til the berries popped open, then strain. Barb makes a similar one but doesn't strain them.. Like blueberries on top of the pancakes.
The weather channel keeps telling us "Welcome to Spring". I just wish it would arrive here. Next week sounds more promising. Barb likes to drink blueberry tea. Back to above paragraph!
This week I got the halibut from Schwans & we had it Tues nite & it was so good. I'll be getting it from now on. As long as it doesn't have bones, Dale will like it. Another addition to our dinner menu. I had scalloped pot. & cabbage with it. It was so good.
Sometimes there is nothing worth watching on TV. This aft. I have 3 choices: pre-season baseball watching Baltimore vs. Minn, golf, or my soaps. At 2 pm it will be the soaps as "As the World Turns" is exciting in its story line.
I'm watching Boston Red Sox vs. Minn. Twins & I'm surprised at the number of people in the stands with a cell phone glued to their ear. At the Mall, I heard a lady saying "I couldn't live without my cell phone." We're behind times -- both Hollertz & Benson have cell phones. When they visit their kids, they alert them as to how close they are when they travel. That is nice when you wonder how close they are.
Fri. A.M. I'm not sure if this will get mailed today or Sat. but I'll have it ready to go.

I'll start a letter before lunch. I made a loaf of blueberry bread, took a few things I won't be wearing up to the attic & brought down some cotton shirts. They need to be washed but that can wait. It is a nice spring day.
Dale will go to get a blood test at the hosp. lab. He said his Blazer is acting up, needs a new engine, so he should get rid of it. Also talks about selling the Monte Carol & just driving the El Camino. It hasn't been driven for a number of years as he has been working on it. With just 1 car, it can be kept in the garage all the time. Save on insurance money as well.
When we were at the Lakewood Mall last Thurs, I was wishing I was 50 years younger. Why? One of the shops had the cutest outfit in their window. A pretty pink top with the popular tiered skirt in a pretty print to match the top. It is really a pretty outfit. Guess you know I tho't it was "pretty". by the use of that word!
Also on the way home, we saw a v-shaped flock of geese flying north. A sign of spring, but I haven't seen a robin yet. I'm ready for spring. I have to pull the shades over the kitchen sink windows down a bit as the sun shines in my eyes.
The new family across the st. have someone clearing & raking up. I heard they want to do some new landscaping.
Once in awhile the Shopping Guide is delivered to our door. It included a section of houses for sale. I noticed it said sale pending for Collins house. The cost is $124,900. They have 4 bedrooms & a big backyard, double garage so that is not too bad. Ryberg's house hasn't been sold. Mail just came so I'll read your letter.
Mar. 17. Happy St. Patrick's Day
I have really enjoyed the Baseball World Classic. And I think the announcing team of Gary Thorne, Arestes Destrada & Orel H. are tops. None are overbearing, or hogs the mike. I hope they announce a log of the games.
Last nite Lar said he'll soon have a hi-intensity (hope that's the correct word) TV. He wants it to watch the World Soccer games coming up soon. Something new in TVs.
When I got up yesterday there wasn't any snow but about 6 AM, it started to snow hard. Kim said driving to school was really tough. The neighbor shoveled his walk but by aft. all sidewalks were clear from the sun. It is clear & cold this A.M. 25.
Yesterday I was busy so today I'm taking it easy. Our dinner is in the crockpot. W hen we shopped on Mon. I got some meat whose date was soon to expire. I got 2 pkg. & froze them & used one today. Nice to get a bargain once in awhile.
Just watched a crazy movie. TCM, of course. Of course I didn't see it from the beginning.
Scott is going out for track this spring. Barb & Lynn wonder how long he'll last. He wants to go out for sports as the girls go for those guys! He wants to be "cool". Marisa arrived home last nite from Fla. She enjoyed her time there. Lynn said to Barb things are easier when Marisa is gone. Scott can't do anything right & Marisa constantly yells & swears at him. She has a filthy mouth & that is not good.
Sheila & Sue are raising their rates because of the increase of gas & elec. 2.00 for shampoo & set & $1.00 for perms. That's not much. Starts Apr. 1.
Finally saw 2 robins in our driveway this A.M.
Dale wondered if he got a bad batch of oil for his Blazer. He changed the oil & that has helped, but there is a noise that bothers him. So he'll look for the reason for that. He's not quite ready to give up on the Blazer.
Last nite Lar figured out my state tax & it is ready to mail. Dale has finished & sent in his taxes. He'll get a refund. Barb hasn't figured her out yet. Last yr. it was finished in Jan.
I've only seen the U.S. team place once & that was against Japan & they should have lost that game. 3rd base "rhubarb" went against Japan & the player didn't leave early. They aren't very good representatives for the u.S. I bet some team's gen. manager's mouths are "watering" when they watch some of the Cuban players. They are good. I'm anxious for regular baseball to start. Pittsburgh is doing pretty good in spring training games. I should root for them, but I don't' know if I can give up being a Met fan.
Apr. 17th is Millie's birthday. You are constantly in my thoughts & prayers and I know you'll come thru with flying colors! We all are praying for you.
It's only Thurs. so I'm a day early for St. Pat's. It has been that way since Lar & Kim come on Wed. Next Wed. is that last time so we'll get back to Thurs. again.
The crockpot dinner was good. Dale isn't home yet (6pm) so I didn't wait for him. Most likely he's working on the Blazer.
I pulled another boo boo today. The crockpot was ready by 9 A.M. At 11 A.M. I couldn't smell it cooking. I forgot to turn it on -- another senior moment!!!
USA Today had a story on "the other third baseman in NYC", meaning the Mets David Wright. They think he'll be an All Star for a long time. He is really a nice kid, down to earth, & wanting to please. And he's been a Met fan growing up. He has 3 brothers & his father is a police captain in Va.
There was also an article on the increase of the number of college grads living at home. Various reasons, debts, cost of apt. or buying one. They come home so they can save money to get a start. Some parents like the idea, some don't.
Tomorrow I have to get more meds & will probably go to the Mall. I need to geet a few things.
Remember we are with you all in thoughts & prayers.
P.S. John just called to tell us they are going to have a son. All is well with Fe & the baby. You can tell that John is very excited with this news.

Read your letter -- a very complete report. Your Dr. & his nurse sound like very caring people. I'm sure all will go well for you in this new experience. I'm sure glad you had a complete physical & caught this in the early stages. You're lucky to be in an area with good doctors.
Last Fri. Bensons & Hollertz came for lunch. I had a 1 pm Dr. appt. so we met at 2 pm -- Holiday Inn. They quit serving lunch at 2 pm but a woman in charge said we could eat in the bar area & order from the menu. I wonder if she is the owner's wife. I'll ask Kim tomorrow. She came by & talked to us & said anytime we wanted a late lunch just say Cathy said we can do it. She was a very interesting person. They plan to meet in Apr. again & at the Holiday Inn. We were the only ones in the bar area so we weren't bothered with anyone smoking. We enjoyed each other's company.
Today I made a cake for dessert tomorrow nite & of course I had to sample it. It came out good -- made from scratch.
Last Sat. Wrrn paper had a very interesting article on the '56 flood in Wrrn. I know you will enjoy reading it. The town was really flooded.
The Commissioners are having a time here accusing each other. David Bauer is the one who starts things -- he was the same when he was pres. of the school board. Too full of himself.
Barb gets a number of catalogues featuring clothes and I've seen some tops I like. So far I haven't followed thru with an order, but now I think I will. I never see anything I like in the stores. I don't think older ladies count when it comes to decent styles.
Before we went grocery shopping, we went to the Mall. I needed to get some sympathy cards -- Jack Bjorkquist died. Barb wanted to look at shoes & I always like to look at shoes. We went to "The Shoe Dept" & they had some Dockers that I tried on & got a pair. Not exactly a moccasin but similar & so comfy. A taupe color, not really a tan. On sale plus 50% off so they only cost $9.99. I couldn't believe it & couldn't resist!
Last Sun I watched the Mets play Puerto Rico -- Mets lost. Mon. they were on again vs. Cleveland. They won. A lot of new names but some will go down to other teams until they are ready for the big one. I think they will field a winning team this year!!
Why I like & appreciate Paul's letters.
1) Usually I get one every week.
2) They are so informative.
3) Some part will make me laugh.
4) I hear what is going on in your lives -- family, jobs, pleasures, Andy & Eddie, etc. etc.
Thank you so much.
Wed. aft.
Last Fri, the 3rd, I had a Dr. appt. All is well. My blood pressure was 130/90./ I had a blood test, but I can't remember the reason. Whatever they were looking for was a little low, so I'll have another blood test in 4 months. The Dr. said I want you to have thyroid scan & it was this aft. at 2 pm. First they gave me a shot for color. Not dye but I forget what is was. I was a little shook up over the experience. Waited for 10 min & then called in. I had to lie on a long bed like with a pillow under my head & a pillow under my knees. It took about 15 min, 4 shots. Camera overhead & they moved it closer & then from one side to the other. Then I was ready to go home about 2:30 pm. Barb didn't wait there, so the receptionist called home for me & she picked me up. She was sure I'd have to call Larry for a ride, as she takes Scott home about 3:15. She was thinking of her experiences but from what I've had before I knew it wouldn't take that long.
I'm watching baseball: Cuba vs. Panama. Last of the 9th, 2 out, bases loaded & they are tied. Pan. is up. Then I'll watch Canada vs. USA. It is fun to watch.
Dinner preparations are started but it is soon time to get going again.
Now it's 8:30 & the kitchen has been put in order again.
We had a nice dinner with Lar, Kim & Torey.
Tomorrow Barb & I plan to go to Jamestown. If I don't find any clothes I like, I'll send an order from one of the catalogues.
I'll mail this from Jamestown. If we don't' go out on Fri. the letter isn't mailed until Mon.
Did you see the movie Crash? A lot of people were surprised when it won the Oscar. That is what I read in the newspaper. I watch old movies on TMC.
Hope things are getting better for you Paul.

Yesterday's forecast of icy roads came true -- no school today. Last nite that is what Kim hoped for. A long weekend for the kids. Teacher's meeting on Fri & Mon. is parent-teacher conferences. Dale almost slipped this A.M. when he started his car. He put salt on the walks so I had no trouble getting the garbage to the curb.
This A.M. I started dinner rolls as the ones in the freezer were used up. A good day to do it, as the 1st Thurs. of the month there is a lunch meeting at work for Dale. Also have dinner in the crockpot -- it has become a favorite for Dale & me. Barb hardly never wants to eat it. Only steak is in her diet plans.
Last nite Kim told us her Aunt Dede fell down the basement steps. She has a basement apt. ion her daughter's home. She does her washing upstairs & was going to take the basket to the basement. Her daughter told her to leave it & she'd bring it down after her shower. She also berated her for wearing thongs going up & down the stairs. In the bathroom she heard a thud & upon checking Dede was at the bottom of the stairs, head all bloody. She called 911 & she broke some bones in her neck & had a concussion. Was out for several hours. She must be in her 70's. She is alert now. To make matters worse, her son showed up at the hosp. drunk. Kim said "that's my family".
I should be able to have a fresh roll for lunch with our current favorite, thuringer. We get it at BiLo & it is very good, but expensive. It was a favorite growing up. Another favorite was spiced ham, but I never see that.
Fri. March 3
This aft. at 1 pm & had a Dr. appt. All is well -- blood pressure 130/60 & that is good for me. They took blood for some test. And the Dr. wants me to have a thyroid scan that is set for next Tues aft. at the hospital. Then at 2 pm Warren & Anna picked me up & we met Ted & Pat at the Holiday Inn. They stop lunch service at 2 pm but said we could sit in the bar area & order from the menu. Just the 5 of us & we enjoyed our visit & lunch. They made plans to come her in April so I can be along. Before we left the woman who said we could have lunch in the bar came by & asked how things were. We visited with her & she said we could come anytime if it was 2 or after & get lunch. She said tell them "Cathy said so!" I wonder if she could be the owner's wife. I'll have to ask Kim -- she knows just about everyone. I can't remember their name but it was in the paper recently.
I watched golf when I got home. There is a new young player from Spain & he is good. Right now the top 4 are tied -- Tiger, Phil M, the Spanish fellow & the 4th name won't come to mind. The Spanish fellow had pink pants, low cut waits, white knit shirt & belt & he wears clothes well The girls will be after him. He went to college in Fla.
Yesterday my nose dripped like a faucet. It was blow, blow, blow. I finally took an Airborne tablet & rested after lunch & that helped a bit. Took another one later & went to bed early. Today no blowing so I was happy.
This coming week the temperatures are suppose to be more normal. Sure hope so -- I'm ready for weather that is warmer. Low 20's was what we reached today. The sun made it appear warmer until the wind started blowing.
The nice thing about the crockpot meal that are leftovers & they make a 2nd meal. I really like that.
I haven't worked on my puzzle much this week but it will wait for me. I'm been playing Solitaire.
Nice to read about baseball in the papers. I wonder if we'll get the Mets broadcasts this year. Maybe I'll have to watch Pittsburgh as we can get their games. I like the idea of ala carte TV Wonder if it will come to pass or just idle talk.
