Photos from an Easter visit to Carolyn and Jim's.

I've been lazy this week.  Haven't done any housecleaning.  Mon. I was lazy & didn't do anything other than my regular Mon. duties.  Tues. I cleaned the bathroom & my room & then walked to the P.O. for stamps & to the bank for May money.

Today I washed the kitchen floor & dusted downstairs.  Then I looked thru cookbooks for dessert ideas.  In the Middleton library cookbook (1st one) I saw a recipe for Macaroon Brownies & it sounded so delicious.  I made some after lunch.  They are still "warmish" but I cut one to sample with a cup of coffee.  And they are so good.  There goes my will power.  I'm trying not to eat too much between meals.  It all goes to my stomach!  The boys might not like them as they have a coconut filling.  Could take some to the Beauty Shop but Sheila doesn't like coconut, so that wouldn't be fair to her.  When Jeff came to cut Dad's hair, I always had a treat for him.  Haven't kept it up -- maybe once I bro't a treat for them.

Gen called Sun. nite.  Ed is busy with the Habitat House being built.  You know it uses a lot of volunteer help & Ed is fussy & it bothers him to see people who don't know how to do a job helping.  One Sun. aft. he went over there to redo some mistakes.  He'll be glad when this project is over.  He likes to have a big garden & still cuts hay to sell & John doesn't like to have to help.

Have you noticed how well the Mets are playing esp. D. Bell.  Hope they can keep it up.  Playing Atlanta will tell.  I'm anxious for that.  Esp. to see how Rocker is welcomed in N.Y. in June.

Dale finally got to mow the lawn last Tues.  It was needed after all the rain.  Lar was also mowing at Careys.

Dale likes to go to the discount shops in Jamestown.  He bo't himself some white socks - says the ones he has now are too tight around the ankle & the new one's elastic seem to be looser.  He's full of surprises lately - buying things for himself, buying Barb a gift.  Nice surprises.  He even told me he'd like to get married someday.  I wish he could find someone nice.  If he follows in his older brothers' footsteps I'll have a 3rd nice daughter-in-law.

Now it's Fri. evening the 28th.

Barb decided to take the A.M. off & worked in the aft.  After having my hair done we went to the Mall.  Penneys and Bon Ton were having sales & it seems I always need something at K Mart.  Barb got a pair of jeans & I got 2 pair of slacks.  When we got home Barb noticed a pkg. on the porch.  It was your gift.  She'll write but I want you to know it arrived & she loves it.  It is so pretty & she has it on a dresser in her room.  Colors are perfect for her room.

Lar is working -- he ordered the machinery he wanted.  A back hoe & bucket.  Cost $22,000.00 so he has to keep busy to pay for it.  Was going to get a loan for it.  Good he doesn't have a mortgage on the house. So Kim walked over here but there is a story to tell.  When she & Betsy were walking, she mentioned she should get  Torey an ice cream cone.  But she didn't.  When they got home Torey followed her around, butting her on the rear.  So she figured he wanted to go somewhere & she let him lead her -- right to Grandma's house where he gets ice cream.  He knows the way to get cheese & ice cream & cookies.

Finished reading S. Paretsky's Windy City Blues, a series of short stories.  Usually I don't care for short stories but most of these centered on characters in her plots so they were very interesting to read.

One of the groups Lar & Kim go with will play golf tomorrow at the Kane Country Club.  It's suppose to be a nice day.  Today was lovely with a blue, blue sky.  It's still chilly in the mornings.

Now it's Mon. May 1.  I found a new author Karen Robards.  Read 1 book & got 3 more.  I really like her writing.

Cousins Carolyn and Charles

I think Charles was talking about Zion Church picnic at Sinnissippi Park, Rockford.  Min, Lila & family came for it & for some reason I was with the Nelson Family -- maybe because of Signe & played a lot with Charles.  I think it was before Dad came home for a vacation in Aug. when we met.

I looked at videos & hope I got the right one.  I asked for it & this is what he gave me.  He mentioned a set of Star Wars but I didn't get the price.  Might make a nice gift if Eddie is still interested by then.  I'm mailing it to the library.

Aunt Lila and Cousin Genevieve

Rain is forecast for today but none so far.  The rest of the week is suppose to be sunny & warmer by the end of the week.  The dandelions sure are in full bloom.  We try to keep ahead of them but Neizmic's don't.

Sat. Barb cleaned the porch & put the furniture out.  Sat there awhile Sat aft. but it was still cool.  Maybe by the end of the week.  Sit outside & read.

Time to start thinking about a meal for supper.

P.S.  I'm sending the receipt in case the video isn't what Eddie wants.  I'm sure The Wall is all over the U.S.

The fat cat that the boys still talk about.

Monday, March 13, 2000

Called Carolyn M. last nite to tell her they won't make a copy of a photographer's picture because of the copyright.  So she'll contact Ruth to see if she can find out about a copy -- if the studio is still there, etc.  Carolyn mentioned she invited you folks for Easter dinner.  She also mentioned Signe had a spell of pain but is OK now.  She just hopes Signe won't suffer a lot of pain.  She just hopes Signe won't suffer a lot of pain.  It's soon 6 months so she's done OK.

Dale went to the junk yard last Sat to look for a wheel rim & found one.  His current rim has a little dent U& of course that can't be.  He put it on after work & it fits so now he has to paint it.  The tire was still on so he threw it away at work & as he did that he noticed a wet vac thrown away & he claimed it.  The 3rd one he's found.  A guy at work would like one -- Dale just repaired the cord on the 2nd one so he'll give it to him.  The 3rd one was still wet -- probably not taken care of & Dale loves to tinker & repair things.  He also found 2 estension cords with a light.  He gave one away & kept one.  What a guy.

The census questionnaire came today.  I don't' own the house anymore -- you kids do -- so I guess I'll put Dale's name as owner.

Barb bot veggie & flower seeds & planted them.  She put them in her room by the window so they'll get the sun.  She planted lettuce for Bert & already they are coming thru.  Bert is pleased Barb did that for her.  Barb did that for her.  She was in advertising & knows Iacocca from Ford & then Gen. Motors, I think.  Before that she was in fashions.  Quite a lady.

Tues. evening.

I'm watching Trauma -- Life in the E.R.  I close my eyes when they start cutting.  It's about accidents, shootings, drugs, etc.

Wed aft.

A beautiful day.  Barb took me to get my blood test & I walked home.  Stopped at CVS & didn't see any sympathy cards I liked so I walked back to Cady's & got some.  Wanted to send one to Tom & Diane Scarcella on the death of his mother.  I made sugar cookies today -- mainly for Torey.  He gets 2 each time he visits us.  Spoiled dog!

I couldn't find my keys last Thurs.  I used them to unlock the car & didn't see them.  I looked in my purse & finally found them.  The purse has 2 zipper pockets & I didn't realize that.  One under the other & I must have absentmindedly put it in the 2nd pocket under the 1st pocket.  I've had the purse several months & never noticed it.

Had a letter from Millie today.  She told me about the funeral of Aunt Esther.  The pastor couldn't go to Gen's for lunch as he had another funeral.  She's looking forward to spring like everyone else.

Thurs p.m.
Cleaned up dishes after dinner.  Lar & Kim's night to come over & we sit around the table & talk.  They said Careys are seriously thinking of selling their house & moving closer to Susan.  She is still having problems -- drinking & they'd like to be closer & Susan would like it.  Last Sat. Lar helped them (Paula & John) move stuff to Carey's garage.  They have a house in Buffalo but it takes time to get it all settled -- loans etc.  Then they'll need help to put it back in the U Haul truck.  They took Lar & Kim out to dinner last Sat. nite to thank Lar for his help.  John found a job up there & likes it much better than the job he had in Warren.

Filled out the census & will mail it tomorrow.  Wasn't sure how to answer who the owner of the house is so I put Dale's name there as he lives here & has a job.  He was saying his paycheck is never the same as they get paid by the job -- how hard it is, etc.  How much times it takes.  If they go over the allotted time to get it finished that's their loss & if they finish in less time that's to their advantage.  He's had some raises so he does all right.

Fri. St. Patrick's Day

This aft. Barb & I went to the Mall & I did some shopping at K Mart.  Stopped at Arby's for supper for Dale & me.

Got your letter today.  Wasn't too surprised about Joan & Alan.  Glad she had the gumption to leave him.  Can't remember who told me but one summer I hard that Mim told Joan that any time she wanted to leave Alan she could come to them in Beloit.  And Alan demanded the money she earned & then Joan had to ask him for money.  Joan is 52 -- maybe there will be some happiness for her now.  The son is 30 & the daughter 29.  There is some time between the youngest but she must be around 20 or so.  I'm sure Ruthie must have left something to the girls & that might have helped Joan to decide to leave.  She'd need money for a divorce & apt.  They were married in Aug. & the son was born the following Aug.  I remember hearing  Alan could never please his father or get any attention or love from him.  Joan had a self image problem so maybe it was a hopeless situation.  Maybe they should have had help to change themselves for a better marriage.  Wonder if Ruth will ever tell me about the divorce.

It was COLD this AM when I walked to get my hair done.  26 &  blowing.  It still felt good to be able to walk.

Guess I've covered the news here.

Saturday, February 5, 2000

Just finished writing to Gen & Millie.  Am waiting for the repair man -- my oven is temperamental.  I turn it on but nothing happens.  Thurs. nite I fixed chicken pot pies & went to put them in the oven & it was cold.  Barb called Lar as Dale worked late & Lar got it to work but we had a later meal.  So I called Lucia's & every other Sat. they have a repair man working & he'll be here this aft.  Fast service.

Thanks for the pictures.  Signe looks good.  Wonder what makes June so unhappy.  Tough not to be wanted by your children.  Mim & Tom's home sounds & looks so nice.  Bet they don't miss the old house at all.  Carolyn's Paul has grown into a nice looking young man.  Over the Buffalo radio I heard the St. Olaf choir would be giving a concert there.  I wonder if Paul sings in it.  Is he a senior or has he graduated.

I was home before my wedding.  Edna had a shower for me.  My Dad & Mom, Edna, Gen & I took the train. Mom & I shared a pullman so I would be rested & she wasn't well.  The others sat up.  It was a Fri. evening wedding on a cold, snowy day.  Never choose Jan. but we had nothing to wait for as Carl was settled & I was ready to be a wife.  The ceremony went smoothly & the reception was at the church.  We had taken our pictures before the ceremony.  Gen was maid of honor & Edna & Signe bridesmaids.  Ford was best man & 2 classmates (Sem.) were ushers.  Afterwards we rode with Min, Lila, & children to Beloit. It was terrible driving & it took a long time to get there -- it was so hard to see.  Then we took their car & drove to Janesville & spent the nite at a hotel there.  I think we were married on a Fri. nite as the next day we returned to Beloit & spent the nite at Min & Lila's.  Then on Sun. Dr. Benander had asked Carl to preach & he did.  Our honeymoon was a train ride back to Auburn.  We had a roomette & I wasn't used to being closed in with a man like that -- dressing, undressing, etc.  My stomach was upset & I couldn't eat -- I know Carl went to the dining car alone but I must have eaten once or twice as it is a long ride.

When we arrived Mr. Strand, a loyal member, met us & took us to their home for breakfast.  I had trouble eating I remember.  Then we finally got to our apt. & I was able to be in the bathroom alone & after that all was well, & we went on to have a happy life.  We had 4 yrs before you were born & Mon. was usually our day off.  Many times we would go to Seattle, shop & have dinner.  We also had great fellowship & get togethers as there were a lot of young pastors & wives just starting out.  But now at times it seems like a dream that we ever lived in Auburn or Gt. Falls.  But we still hear from a couple of friends in each place.  Many have died, naturally.  Dad was well received & loved in each congregation.  None wanted him to leave or retire.  But we wanted to be closer to relative & it was time to retire.  I would do it over again.

I hope your back is OK.  Chiropractors can help.  Both Dad & I went to them & I think Barb has as well.

Your shelving is in if I figure the date right & I know you're pleased.  You have a good start on your "wish list" for 2000.

Repair man is here - part costs some $60.00 + his time but it's something I can't do without.

It doesn't take kids long to learn the tricks, does it.  Taking after their Dad, eh?

Big K had puzzles for 1.99 plus 1.00 off if you took 2.  So I have some new puzzles to put together & a new firm card table.  It had to be ordered (Brand Names) & they called & said they'd hold it for 2 days.  Luckily Dale went into Jtown on Wed.& picked it up for me.  He was going to Dan Gage & there the rug padding was 2.00 cheaper & they have rugs, but they close at 5 pm so he didn't have much time to browse so he's on his way to Gage's this aft.  This is his early week - 7-4.  He saw 2 he likes but it is a light blue, and a burgundy.  He doesn't think the blue is too light.  His shoes are off when he's in his room. Does that mean I have to take my shoes off on Mon. when I change sheets or when I put clean clothes away!

Think my letter is written & it's only Sat.   Got something accomplished while the repair man is here.  Finished my puzzle this A.M.

Back to the wedding.  One friend was to take pictures with his camera but none turned out & we were so disappointed but we do have a movie taken by Signe who had the camera.  We viewed it a few times during the years.  And the phtog. picture.  Still have my wedding dress made by my mom & Edna.  Carl's gift to me were pearls.  I've had them restrung once.  I don't think I gave him a gift - just me!  Dad came to Rkfd on vacation & that's when we met.  All the girls talked about Carl Nelson, unmarried.  We went to a Rkfd Peaches baseball game on a date.  He gave me a diamond after 3 weeks & married after 5 mo.  But I was 24 & he was 29.

Stove working.  Cost 114.90 so that's not bad.  He replaced the part round, round ignitor, & cleaned the burned tubes, which were a little crusted, so better heat.

P. S. #2

One more memory.  The bachelor pastors had spent time at the Grand Hotel in Victoria - think it's an island.  They had a grand time & Dad said he'd take me there but never did.  We spent time in Vancouver, B. C. at a church convention & was able to shop or look.  A classmate Gordon Loren (last to be married) was in Bellingham & we'd visit them & once we had a picnic at a lovely park in Vancouver just above Bellingham. I'm sure you've heard me say sports announcer Verne Lundquist's folks were in Everett & we had good times with them.  Now Mert is on Dialysis (sp) & he was given a year to live & is still alive as of Christmas.

Carolyn just called  - a nice surprise.  She said Signe's family picture has tape on it & spoils the picture & she wondered if I could get our copied & send it to her.  We talked about the party, Signe, etc.  She mentioned Curt is opened to having the reunion at the lake & would look for housing availability for those going.  Maybe I'll think about that - wonder what the dates would be.  Something to dream about.

Hope you can read this epistle.

Sunday, January 30, 2000

Just put a turkey breast roast in the oven for our evening meal.

I'll watch the super bowl but it's not as exciting this year.  I'll root for the Rams.

K Mart had 1000 pc. puzzles on sale for 1.99.  I got 3 last Tues. & didn't realize but 2 & get 1.00 off.  Should have gotten 4.  On Fri. I got 2 more so I'm well supplied with new puzzles, altho I don't mind doing them a 2nd or 3rd time.  I'm doing a farm scene - farmhouses, pumpkins, and green  grass.  The green & orange is driving me nuts.  Now I'm soon thru getting the pumpkins together -- then the grass.  I watch TV & do puzzles.  Heard from Millie & she does puzzles.  She said she sits down for 15 min. & 2 hours later she's still at the puzzles.   I have the same experience.  Retirement is nice - no time schedules.  I do some work!  Yesterday a coffee cake, Danish rolls & a batch of cookies.  Even washed the floor last Wed. so my back is better.  Can't be idle all the time.

The weather is something else.  I feel sorry for people going to Atlanta when it's so hard to get around due to icy roads, etc.

I knew my electric blanket was getting old & really found out when it turned zero & I was cold.  I have a full bed elec. blanket neither Barb or Dale would use so since I sleep alone it covers me & keeps me nice & toasty warm.  Next fall I'll look for a new one that fits.

Last Mon. we had a good time at our get together.  We were there 2 1/2 hrs. & I'm sure the waitress was glad to see us go so she could reset the table.  She was the only waitress so the fellow who tended bar helped her.  He could be a manager of some sort as he wore a suit & was very nice & so was the waitress.  I called for a reservation but the D.R. never answered & I didn't call again but they weren't busy.

Yes, Paul, I remember the disappointment when you didn't live up to your capabilities but in the end you did, so the disappointment turned to joy & pride.  Don't be too hard on Andy.

June gave us some old letters I wrote to the folks & some Carl wrote from college.  Signe sent him a new shirt & in the letter he asked for a tie to wear with it & a pair of dress socks.  He didn't have much to go on, but he made it.  Those were depression years.

I'll be waiting to hear about your dinner for Signe.  I sent her a card but just signed my name as I wasn't sure of her condition.  The sisters live long lives.  89 for Signe.  90 for Stella & I imagine Lila will be 88 her next birthday.

Gen & Millie went to see Aunt Esther but she knows nothing.  They are keeping her alive & I think that's too bad.  Elsie Yeagle's mother was alert at 100 -- I think they had a party for her at church.  If you have your ind that is wonderful.  Allie Peterson lived to 100 I think, but she was in & out of it.

Saturday, November 13, 1999

This is the last sheet of paper on this pad so it will be a mixed paper letter.

Just walked & mailed 2 bills in the 5th Ave box.  It's cloudy but still mild.  They keep saying colder weather is on the way but it doesn't last.  I'm not complaining tho.  Let it be nice thru the holidays.

The Schwan man comes every other Thurs. & last Thurs. he said he'd come on Wed. as the Thurs. was Thanksgiving.  I have a turkey in the freezer but it still doesn't seem possible the holidays are getting so close.

Still, both Barb & I have a good start on our Christmas shopping.  In fact, Barb is just about finished.  Soon a pkg. will be on the way with birthday presents.

I don't think I could worship every Sun. at the Hosanna Church.  I, too, would miss the liturgical service & sacraments.  Altho, when a child & saw the communion elements on the altar I knew it would be a longer service & wished I could go home after Sun./ School.  I couldn't take that type of music Sun. after Sun.  But each to his own, or hers!

Is Signe in a nursing home?  I wonder if the sisters know as Ruth always calls me to tell of any operations, etc.

This A.M. I made a coffee cake & a white (box) layer cake.  Dale likes an A.M. snack so it's either rolls or coffee cake.  And I love to bake so it's no problem.  Keeps me young!  Ha, ha.

Lar & Torey came over last nite.  Kim was at a school dance & Lar forgot the USA Today papers I save for him.  Torey loves to come to Grandma's as he gets cheese, ice cream & 2 sugar cookies.  He expects it & makes his wants known if I'm too slow in getting them.

I'm a little surprised it's taking so long to get Andy fitted for glasses.  Maybe he's not looking forward to wearing glasses even if it helps him to see the blackboard better.

Rose Seeley isn't able to be in church very often due uto her back.  I miss seeing her & it will be strange not seeing Gen Brader up front on the left hand side of the sanctuary.

Now it's Sun. aft. & I just returned from a walk overtown to CVS for some bargains they offered.  It was still nice & the weather is suppose to change to colder weather.  Very windy, tho.

Betty Gusfatson Mailhot wants me to make my Danish rolls for a party she's having Dec. 11  I'd rather not but it's hard to say no so I'll do it.   It's not going to be a habit, tho.  I'll have to make 2 batches.  Tues. Betty Casey wants me to go out to lunch - I say yes.  Mon. we hope to go to Jamestown in the aft. if the predicted snow flurries are few.  (We went).

Did you notice Nascar is going to NBC & Fox?  It's a popular sport & growing.  It's popular in this house.

The Bills are playing Miami & are ahead so far.  The Browns scored first against the Steelers.

The Wisc/Iowa game was great for you fans.  I enjoyed it too & seeing Dayne play & honored.  Now Penn State was another story.

I have my Christmas cards & want to get started addressing them....sometime soon.

I asked Kim if Barb Jacobs would like to come for Thanksgiving.  Kim asked her & she might come.  One friend has cancer so she won't be with her.  2 others talked about going to Holiday Inn.  If that doesn't happen she'll come.  No one wants to be alone on a holiday.

Time for a coffee break.

Tues. A.M.  Will bring this to a close & mail it before I start my "chores".  Betty called & can't make it for llunch today.  Now I don't have to rush to get those "chores" completed.  Heavy frost overnite.

Sunday, November 7, 1999

Your mother has a black eye!  I was walking up the post office steps & tripped & fell on my face.  My glasses pressed on my right eye so it is a bruise mostly under the eye.  Doesn't hurt but doesn't look too good.  People noticed it in church.  My first black eye.  Scratched the right eye glass.

Got your letter & pictures.  You look different.  But I can't decide how I like it until I see you in person.  If you like it that is the best reason.

Tomorrow Barb & I are going to Erie while the weather is still nice.  Want to do some Christmas shopping   I hope to find pants for Andy.  Now that he has more expensive ideas his gifts will be fewer.  Hope he'll understand - but if I have to pay 50.00 for pants_______.  He'll still get his share.

Roland & Linda's house sounds nice.  Eric sure is a hard worker.  Sorry to hear about Signe.  She would be 88 next Jan.  Stella will be 90 in Nov. - the 27th.  But when one hits the late 80s you have to expect the end.

They announced in church today that Gen Brader had died.  I was shocked - didn't realize she was ill.  Ever since Bill's death she was unhappy & read to die.  I don't feel that way - I'm happy for every day when I wake up.

Back to Barb, because she won't work Mon. she will make up the hours the rest of the week.  She has been sanding the kitchen cupboards getting them ready for painting.  Nothing's been done for years & years.

Lar & Kim went to Jamestown last nite to purchase a cabinet for their bathroom.  Like a buffet & they'll take the top off & lay the sink, etc. on top of it.  I know they talk of using old dressers, if good, & cut a hole in the top.  They looked for tops from plumbing co. but they cost too much - $500.00, this one costs 169.99.  Yesterday Kim was going to walk Torey to camp - over 5 mi. - then mow the lawn.  Lar would pick them up.

We like our new chairs.  They are firmer, hit the back in the right spot & are comfortable.  Took a nap on Fri. after they came.  Barb says now we need a rug that blends better.  That's just a dream.

Penn State lost - boo hoo.  Barb is upset they went down to 8th.  The Wisc.-Purdue game was a good one.  Watched it all.

Have golf on TV; Dale has racing & Barb is switching between tennis & the Bills.  Nice to have our personal TVs.

A nap sounds good so I'll close for this time.

Mon.  We had a nice trip to Erie & found (I hope) pants Andy wants - at Penneys so can be exchanged.  Also the other gift he wanted.

Friday, February 5, 1999

It's 8:30 A.M. & all is quiet.  This is Dale's early week so I'm up, dressed & set to go.  Where - well I should cash a check for Feb. expenses so I plan to walk over town.  It is sunny so should warm up a bit.

You got 2 letters as I'm trying to write letters on Fri. & mail them Sat. when I get my hair done.  It doesn't always happen.

Early this A.M. - 3:15 I heard a noise & saw a light downstairs.  Dad was up sitting in a chair - 2 lamps on in the L room, back door & basement light on & in the bathroom.  Finally got him up, changed his Depend & got him back in bed.  But I just dozed so I'll probably take a nap this aft.

Been thinking of Cindy & the baby.  Be sure to keep me informed.

Already wrote notes to Millie & Gen.

Am watching the Weather Channel & one gal has a pretty yellow suit on.  Makes me think of spring.  We still have piles of snow in spots - the sun doesn't reach them - and it feels like spring but I know it's too early for W. Pa.

Noticed in the paper that the Mets fired Tim McCarver & hired Tom Seaver.  AND they will be on Ch. WPIX so we'll see some of their games.  Oh Happy Day!  What more could I ask for?

Signe called last Sun. but Carolyn & I talked.  Dad said a few words.  Carolyn said she'd be taking Paul back to college & would miss the wedding.  (Charles)  But maybe Jim would take Signe.  Hope you can make it.

In Buffalo there is talk about moving Children's Hospital & people are very upset about that.  I watch Buff. Ch. 2 news - it is the most investing.  NBC.

NASCAR racing starts Sun. & Dale is happy.  The book on Dale Earnhardt family came & it is so interesting.  Read it thru.  He is family oriented.  Followed in his father's footsteps & learned form him.  Father died at 44 of a heart attack & he still misses him.  Mother, 2 brothers & 2 sisters still in N. Carolina.

Aft. (PM)

I tried to get Dad up & he didn't want to so I let him sleep & went to cash a check.  So I have my cash for the month.  I got him up & he had "brunch", 2 meals in 2.  He was up awhile & now he's sleeping again.

Stopped at the library & got "Pictures of Perfection" by Reginald Hill.  Tried to get a book by Ian Rankin but couldn't find one & didn't have time to check.  In Buff. paper there was a good review of his books in general & the latest one "Black & Blue".  To quote - "There are no barrooms, no four letter words.  And when he romances the town librarian, there are no affecting descriptions of just who does what to whom.  They enjoyed their lovemaking 'he says', and that's all I'm going to tell you on the subject."  My kind of book - tame!

We got a letter today from Messiah Church Auburn inviting us to the 75th Anniversary May 1 & 2.  We can stay with Elfrieda Kennedy but it will be just a dream.  No way can we accept,m as nice as it would be to return to Auburn once again.  I'll have to write a letter.

Better bring to a close.

Tuesday, October 14, 1997

I'll start a letter & add to it as time goes by.  It's hard not being able to sit down.  Haven't been able to go to church or do much of anything.  Hoping is trying so you'll have to buy your own birthday gift this time Paul.

It's been awhile since I wrote - did I write we have our new elec. box & it is so nice.  Sometime in the winter Lar will do some wiring for us.

Thanks for the boys' pictures.  They came out real good.  Andy looks a little "heavier" when compared with last year's picture.

The landscaping by the D. R. windows has grown together & is too big.  So Lar will remove some of it & replant.  That will be our birthday gifts from Lar & Kim.  He'll use smaller pieces.

The people across the st. landscaped the corner by Conewango & 3rd.  It is around a big tree, terraced like & so attractive now.  Hard to describe but you'll see it on your next visit.  They used old cement as dividers - hard to visualize but very attractive.

Jack Carey's mother died & the funeral was the 10th.  Lisa & family came & so did Susan but not her husband who had to be in court.  Sat. Carey's left for Fla. for a month's stay at their condo.

Now it's Sun (19th) & I still can't sit.  Today my rear is especially sore - think I did more walking than I should have.  If I can't walk that will be a big disappointment.  I'm using the Micro as a desk now while I'm standing & writing.  Other times I use it as a table to eat.  Later in the day I can sit a little while.

The Xrays showed a thickening by the disc in the back so I'm taking Naprosyn twice a day.  Guess I expected a miracle as it hadn't helped that much.

Arlene Hornstrom stopped by with a birthday card for us as she had been in Buffalo with Julie & family.  There was 20.00 in the card & the thin Swedish molasses cookies which I love & Halloween M&M's for us in a bag.  She's always been so good to us.

Finally heard from Stella - she is now in a 1 room apt. in Mpls. & gets 2 meals a day.  It was so good to hear from her & to get her new address.  I wrote a note to Signe as she sent Dad 10.00 in his birthday card & a note to Arlene.  So now I'm ready to rest while on my back.

Oh yes, the Marlins won - hope they take the series, but I hope Cleveland might.

Oct 24.  Better get this mailed.  Good news about Eddie.  Some just take longer to adjust.

We send our love to you all.

Saturday, November 9, 1996

I can't sleep anymore so I'll write letters.  Winter is suppose to come this weekend.  We had snow flurries last Sat & Sun & then it warmed up during the week.

Paul I forgot to congratulate you for becoming V Pres/Pres elect of the Wi Lib. Assoc.  That is wonderful.  We are proud of you.

Dale has been on vacation this week - worked on his stereo speakers & in the basement.  He got his eyes checked for new contacts.

Barb was home Fri as she didn't feel good -- diarrhea.

We finally saw the Dr.  Dad's aches & pains are related to Parkinson's & there's not much help.  I saw the Dr. female asst. & I liked her a lot.  She did more explaining.  Had to have a blood test & she called with the results & things are good.  They have to check on the cholesterol medication to see if it is harming the kidney, etc. but all is well.

My Christmas Club check came & Barb & I started our Christmas shopping & yesterday I started wrapping some gifts.  After Thanksgiving, I'll put the tree up.  Am looking forward to that.

Signe called yesterday & wants a picture of Dad taken in 1973 - the year Joyce got married.  Reason - Carl was the only one not there for a sister-bro picture & she wants one of Carol to add to the picture.  I wouldn't know where to look.  I said maybe Genevieve or Charles would have one taken around the '70s.

John Pearson was 35 on the 4th of Nov.

Johnson's house has been sold but they haven't moved in yet.  A younger couple with a boy around 4, I'd say & maybe one a little older.  They've taken out the old rugs, raked leaves & I'm sure there is a lot of work to be accomplished before they move in.

Bo't my Christmas stamps yesterday - got them early as I want the one you don't have to "lick".  Don't have any cards, tho.  Will have to look around.

Elections are over & also the bad ads on T.V.  Thank goodness - some were real nasty.  The next Pres election is 2000 - hope I'm around to see 2000 come in.

Guess I'll see if the paper is here.  Just a note to let you know we're thinking of you & love all of you.

I can't find the article of the Milwaukee renewal project but you'll find out if you go there next Thurs.

Barb is on vacation the next 2 weeks as Lynn & family are going to Fla to visit her bro. & sister & parents.   They're renting one of those vans with T.V. V.C.R. etc. so that should help.  Figure it will take 2 days to get there.

Careys are at their Fla. condo for the month of Oct.  Every time they go away their house alarm goes off.  This time I wasn't home as I usually alert Lar so the Co. called him.  We have they key & Lar has to turn it off.  Luckily he heard the phone ring.  Police come, too.

Connaro - Mary and Hal - live on East Street now, near Pa ave in that big white house & Lar has done some planting for them.  We won't eat til 6 pm as he wants to work later as it gets dark so much earlier now.  No problem for me.  But I'd better start getting busy so I'll finish later.

USA comments on baseball are interesting concerning the Mets & Yankee fans.  The fans hate each other.  I'm not sure if I'll root for the Braves as their announcers are so biased now, if they win again they'll be impossible to listen to.  Have you heard Joe Morgan is an analyst on NBC.  I think he is great.  I like him & Jon Miller on ESPN Sun nite baseball.

I'll finish this - it looks like St. Louis will be finished if the rest of the game is like the 1st inning.

Forgot to mention Roland called on Dad's birthday.  Signe is with them for a month & she wanted to talk to Dad.  It was 10:30 our time & he was asleep.  I was watching baseball.  Talked with Roland a bit.  Lindsay plays soccer & Eric referees the Sat. soccer games & earns some money that way.  Mentioned he hadn't talked to you for a long time.

Stella called.  Dan, Barbara & 4 of the kids are in Fla.  Barb has been gone 3 months & Dan was to go for 3 weeks & has been gone for 5 so far & Stella has heard nothing.  One son & wife are living in the house in I.M.  They just had a baby.  Wonder if they'll go to Fla.  Dan was driving school bus & working at Walmarts.

We heard from Lila & she wonders if we could visit them.  I don't think they realize how sick he is & can't travel.  They probably think I am holding him back.  I'd go in a minute if Dad was able.

The pastor came today to give Dad communion.  When it was over Dad cried - he feels bad he can't get to church & this A.M. he didn't feel that good.  I think next time it will have to be in the aft. as it takes time to get going.  I'm just glad he can be home.

Dale is getting ready to eat - he worked late tonite.  Glad for the microwave.

P.S.  There is a SOLD sign on Johnson's house but no sign of anyone doing anything - moving in, etc.

Larry took Dad to see the eye Dr.  He finds it hard to accept that his illness affects his eyes & he finds it hard to read.  In this connection, he isn't able to reach American Heritage magazine so I would recommend against renewing it for him.

I just finished reading "The Golden Straw" by Catherine Cookson & it was so good.

Haven't heard anymore from Gen.  We also called Stella.  When the weather warms up she hopes to get out.

Then Signe called us.  She wants to come & visit us & she wants Lila to go with her.  That would mean Genevieve & maybe Charles & Dad couldn't take that, even for a short time.  So we try to discourage her.  After all she is 85 & Lila 84 & neither are that well.  Carolyn's son Paul graduates from high school & has been accepted by both Augustana in Rock Island & St. Olaf in Northfield, Mn.  He prefers the latter but Augie has offered a 2,000.00 scholarship in music.  He's hoping one comes thru from St. Olaf.  The bassoon is what he plays & he'd like his own.  Cost 2,000 & up.  Carolyn gets 40% disc. where she works & they are looking into a 2nd hand one.  They are very proud of him.

Our furnace works well & keeps us warm.  It keeps me too warm when working so today I got out some of my presummer tops.  Time for a change anyway.

When I spoke to Gen yesterday she said they'd seen their first robin.  That is what I'm waiting for.  Am also waiting for the mailman & USA paper so I can do my daily crossword puzzle.  He's late today.  Have to keep my mind alert!!!

When Lar & Kim come on Thurs, we'll have to tell them about Eddie's suggestion to try & capture the chipmunk, squirrel or whatever is in the attic with nuts.  Altho we haven't heard as much movement lately.

Barb drove Bob's new Ford Bronco Fri. home work work & this A.M. to work.  Her car needed some work done so Bob worked on it over the weekend.  The last weekend of the month Bob, Lynn& Marissa are going to Toronto for a break & Barb gets to have Scott all weekend.  She is afraid he won't be very happy when the folks are gone & he's left with Barb.  Scott gets & needs more attention so Marissa feels left out so they wanted to do something special with her.

Tomorrow is Circle & I'm leader so I need to review & the mail should be here.

Things are as usual here.

P.S.  Dad just came home & the reason he has a hard time reading is the start of a cataract but they won't do anything yet.  He can see T.V. etc. so they'll wait.  He has a Sept. appt.  He feels better now.

Monday, January 15, 1996

Are you over the disappointment yet. We were all rooting for G. Bay but it didn't help. It was good experience for next year.  Pitts. game was "scary" as they didn't play their best but the outcome was good.  Hope they can do better in the Super Bowl.

It's warming up & the huge icicles on most homes are melting.  This yr. the front porch ceiling formed icicles from dripping.  An article in the paper said they were due to too warm an attic & open up vents, etc.  I opening up a window.  Don't need any roof or eaves damage.

The furnace started making a noise so I finally called & a man came & found the gasket wasn't in right.  It's fixed & no noise anymore.  He said it was good I called as eventually it would have stopped working.

Wrote a note to Signe as her birthday is the 19th.  Talked to Gen Sat. U& they have plenty of snow to shovel.  All is well there.

We have some new TV channels.  ESPN2, AMC, Encore, & Learning Channel.  Have seen some good movies on AMC.  Last nite we watched "Pride & Prejudice" on A&E & really enjoyed it.  On for 3 nites in a row - tonite U& Tues from 9-11 pm.

Tomorrow is Circle & I'm leader.  We're looking into other religions.  I got one study from the Bible Book Store & put it in a "safe place" & I can't find that safe place.  Noticed among Dad's books one on 7th Day Adventists - a book sent to clergy to explain their views so I'm using that.  Have never known much about them but they believe in the Triune God, Virgin birth, Jesus as Saviour, etc. but they dwell in the O.T. a lot & naturally their Sabbath is Sat. & they spend a lot of time trying to decide when Christ will come, the end of the world, prophecy, etc.  I have really enjoyed learning about them.

Sat. Barb & I went to see Lar & Kim's house.  He's finishing up on the insulating.  Has put in the wood stove so he had a little warmth.  The partitions make it easier to visualize the rooms, etc.  Blair's home looks great.  Outside not completed yet.  They've started the siding.  It would be fun to see that house when they're settled.  Maybe Lar & Kim will get a chance & they can tell us.

Tori & "his sister" were at camp playing in the snow.  If we pay attention to Ginger, Tori gets so jealous.  Sometimes Kim walks him around & later one nite they were across the st. & Tori sat down & wouldn't move.  She pulled & he went a bit & sat down again.  If he comes in he gets a snack & remembers that.  But not that nite.

LaVerne Mathis & Leo Rossey died last week.  La V has been ill for a long period of time, but Mr. Rossey was in church regularly.  He was in the hosp. 18 days & was coming along fine.  But he had a stroke & died.

Don't remember if you remember Debby Schorman - Barb's age.  Her husband, Ron California, was killed in a freak accident at work.  42 years.  Leave 4 children.  They were married in '73 so maybe the children aren't that little.  Lived in Meadville.  He was C. E. O. of a wood products co. & only been there 1 year.

Marissa has been sick with strep throat & viral infection.

Things are as usual here . I'm able to walk every Fri. A.M. to get my hair done.  On cold days I wear long underwear.  Around Mar. I won't have to walk as far - they're moving to the basement of the old Betty Lee Bldg.  We'll give them more space & the Elks Club would like to buy the house they're in now.  So if the owner should sell they won't be in a bind.  Am written out!

We send love & hugs to all of you.  We are lucky to have you 4.

Friday, October 27, 1995

Thanks for your letter.  I have a good start on Christmas - Bon Ton has had some great sales.  Really need ideas for Paul & JoAnna..

To celebrate the Bicentennial they will put an engraved brick walk in front of the theater.  Engraved names in blocks for 75.00 a brick.  Plan to get one for Dad & am thinking of getting one with Andy & Eddie Nelson on it.

I bought a paperback finally.   K is for Killer by Sue Grafton.

Also got a book by Sara Paretsky at the library, "Guardian Angel" & now I found I've already read it.  Also got "Texas Rich" by Fern Michaels & "The Nightingale Legacy" by Catherine Coulter, a newer book at the library.  If I couldn't read, life would be drab.

Went to the dentist for a cleaning & check & had 1 cavity & got it filled last Mon.  Next Mon. I get my yearly physical, which was postponed from a Sept date.

We are enjoying the World Series.  I stayed up to the end of the 11 inning game.  12:45 AM, our time.

Don't care for the TV set up - for the play offs & the 2 channels having to share.  Prefer A.B.C. but they talk too much to suit me.  I put together 2 puzzles while watching the games.  Prefer to be doing something as I watch.

When Barb first started bringing Scott here for a cooky, he was shy.  Now he comes in with a big "hi" & leaves with "goodby".  He is talking much more.

Barb wants to take Fri. Nov. 3rd off & she & will go to the Erie Mall to shop.

Stella is home from the hospital.  Did OK after the operation.  But the Dr said she'd either have to go to a nursing home or to Dan's for awhile, so she is with Dan & family.  Naturally she hopes to get to her own apt as soon as possible.

Signe is at Lila's this weekend as Carolyn will be at her college reunion.  Ruth called to let us know about Stella & told us about Signe.

Now it's Sat A.M., Nov. 4th & I'll finish this.

When talking about books, forgot to mention I bot "Chicken Soup for the Soul"  and have enjoyed reading the different stories by various people.  They are inspirational.

I had my yearly physical & all is well.  Visited the dentist, had 1 cavity & got it taken care of.  Got my eyes examined & just had 1 little change in my right eye.  He said my eyes are in fine shape, couldn't believe I was 75 & that whatever I was doing to keep it up.

Yesterday Barb & I went to Erie.  She drove & we had no problems - she is a good driver.  We went to a new dept store Kohl's & it is nice.  Ate at The Olive Garden & really enjoyed it.  T hen to Barnes & Noble Book Store.  Fun to look there.  Next Stop Toys R Us & we had fun there & just about finished the boys' shopping there.  (If only it were that easy to shop for their parents!!)   We weren't in the Mall for long as it was nearing 3 pm & we wanted to be on our way home.  Time went just too fast, but so much fun.

I was in bed by 10 pm & up at 6:30 A.M. as I couldn't sleep any longer.   Dad gets a hair cut this A.M. & then Barb & I will go to our Mall for a couple of things and get groceries.

We're having our first snowflakes this A.M.  Yesterday we were lucky, we had sunshine but you could feel it getting colder.

Finally met our new neighbors.  Halloween I made double batch of Danish & bro't over 8 & introduced myself.  The next day I got a nice note from her.  Al & Pat Herrera, Kyle & Alyssa.  We just talked at the door a few minutes.  In the card she said when she is "more settled we'd love to have you over".

Bob & Lynn bro't Marissa & Scott here for trick 'n' treat & I had 8 rolls for them.  And Lar stopped in after raking at Carey's & he got some rolls.  I'm known for something - my rolls!  Better than nothing!

Kim will be glad when 5 pm comes as then she will have completed more credits toward her master's degree.  Thurs nite after they left here, she had to complete a paper for this.  A new Sam's (WalMart) opened in Lakewood so they'll go out to eat & then shop there, etc.

Dale got a V.C.R. for his room & also bot & installed a garbage disposer for our sink.  Old one wore out.  All is well here.
