Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

It's been a rainy, dull day. This aft. we watched Mets vs. Yankees. It was a good series, esp. the first game which the Mets won. But they put up a good fight. I'm sure they gave the Yankees a scare. So I think the Mets made a good showing. I like the idea of inter league play.
Yesterday the A.M. & aft. circles from church went out to lunch at Heritage House in Russell - they take groups of at least 10 & aren't open daily. We had a nice time & enjoyed the food.
Interruption as Kim & Torey came over for awhile. Lar was at camp due to the rain. It's looking so nice - you'll be surprised when you see it.
We'll celebrate Kim's birthday on Sun. She can't some on Thurs, as usual as she has to teach a 3 hr. course at the Red Cross Thurs. & again on Mon. nite - 6-9. Her birthday is Sat. but they'll go out to dinner. Just 2 sessions for the class.
Now I'm watching Braves vs. Toronto & Tor. is ahead so far. They won.
Barb's been doing some weeding at the library. Lar got - can't think of the word - like mulch & she put it around the shrubs & it's a great improvement. Now she is starting in the basement - painting the floor & walls. A cream color for the walls & a tan floor. She's going by sections & has one section completed. What an improvement. It will take awhile - we have stuff we should get rid of. Lucky you don't have a basement to collect junk!
Dale is keeping the outside looking nice.
Enjoyed your letter & hearing of your doings. That is said about Renee but she sounds very cheerful & sure of the results.
Thurs. It's a beautiful day. I did a load of wash & hung it outside. Dale put the hooks up & then the lines so I can dry sheets outside.
When I asked Kim what to serve for her birthday - (when I asked anyone for ideas I don't get much response) Kim suggested salads & to grill hamburgers. We had steaks for Father's Day. So I'll make pot. salad, Broccoli Salad & fruit salad. Noticed Betty Crocker has a small angel food mix that makes 12 cupcakes or a loaf cake. I'll try that so she can have some candles even tho she doesn't eat desserts - except M&M's.
Now it's Fri A.M. Will be warmer & more humid today. They came & checked the air cond. & all is in good order. We'll probably use it today.
This letter will finally get mailed tomorrow - when I go over town.
Just watched a Western starring Audie Murphy. Enjoyed it.
Yesterday the movers were here (Conaways) & Dad sat on the porch watching. They (Harraras) are still here - at least the car is there & the back end opened so I suppose it's the last minute stuff before they take off to N. Dak. Haven't heard a thing about the new neighbors.
Strawberries are late this year - none so far at Hatch Patch. I need to make jam. Usually I pick with Kim. They have raspberries you can pick. Maybe I'll try that when they're ripe.
Gen was 75 June 13th & it was Fri. They (Millie, Edith, John, Gen & Ed) went out to dinner & then back to Gen's for cake & ice cream. Millie & Edith got a special cake decorated with "75".
Think I've "gabbed" enough.

Are you over the disappointment yet. We were all rooting for G. Bay but it didn't help. It was good experience for next year. Pitts. game was "scary" as they didn't play their best but the outcome was good. Hope they can do better in the Super Bowl.
It's warming up & the huge icicles on most homes are melting. This yr. the front porch ceiling formed icicles from dripping. An article in the paper said they were due to too warm an attic & open up vents, etc. I opening up a window. Don't need any roof or eaves damage.
The furnace started making a noise so I finally called & a man came & found the gasket wasn't in right. It's fixed & no noise anymore. He said it was good I called as eventually it would have stopped working.
Wrote a note to Signe as her birthday is the 19th. Talked to Gen Sat. U& they have plenty of snow to shovel. All is well there.
We have some new TV channels. ESPN2, AMC, Encore, & Learning Channel. Have seen some good movies on AMC. Last nite we watched "Pride & Prejudice" on A&E & really enjoyed it. On for 3 nites in a row - tonite U& Tues from 9-11 pm.
Tomorrow is Circle & I'm leader. We're looking into other religions. I got one study from the Bible Book Store & put it in a "safe place" & I can't find that safe place. Noticed among Dad's books one on 7th Day Adventists - a book sent to clergy to explain their views so I'm using that. Have never known much about them but they believe in the Triune God, Virgin birth, Jesus as Saviour, etc. but they dwell in the O.T. a lot & naturally their Sabbath is Sat. & they spend a lot of time trying to decide when Christ will come, the end of the world, prophecy, etc. I have really enjoyed learning about them.
Sat. Barb & I went to see Lar & Kim's house. He's finishing up on the insulating. Has put in the wood stove so he had a little warmth. The partitions make it easier to visualize the rooms, etc. Blair's home looks great. Outside not completed yet. They've started the siding. It would be fun to see that house when they're settled. Maybe Lar & Kim will get a chance & they can tell us.
Tori & "his sister" were at camp playing in the snow. If we pay attention to Ginger, Tori gets so jealous. Sometimes Kim walks him around & later one nite they were across the st. & Tori sat down & wouldn't move. She pulled & he went a bit & sat down again. If he comes in he gets a snack & remembers that. But not that nite.
LaVerne Mathis & Leo Rossey died last week. La V has been ill for a long period of time, but Mr. Rossey was in church regularly. He was in the hosp. 18 days & was coming along fine. But he had a stroke & died.
Don't remember if you remember Debby Schorman - Barb's age. Her husband, Ron California, was killed in a freak accident at work. 42 years. Leave 4 children. They were married in '73 so maybe the children aren't that little. Lived in Meadville. He was C. E. O. of a wood products co. & only been there 1 year.
Marissa has been sick with strep throat & viral infection.
Things are as usual here . I'm able to walk every Fri. A.M. to get my hair done. On cold days I wear long underwear. Around Mar. I won't have to walk as far - they're moving to the basement of the old Betty Lee Bldg. We'll give them more space & the Elks Club would like to buy the house they're in now. So if the owner should sell they won't be in a bind. Am written out!
We send love & hugs to all of you. We are lucky to have you 4.

We just got back (3:30 p.m.) from the Valley & the annual mtg. which got a little "warm" this year. The L.C.W. [Lutheran Church Woman] put $5,000,00 into a Historical Fund for church upkeep & according to the constitution that isn't legal as any decision & money spent on the church bldg. must be authorized by the Council so finally it was changed so all is legal. The L.C.W. is run by e ladies & they don't want anyone else to have a say, but when that amt. of money is in question it must be run, so to speak, by the congregation. Even the Church Council can spend only 500.00 without the congregation's OK. Dad even threatened to resign if they wouldn't do things legally. It's in the past. Dad may seem easy going, but if it's not according to Hoyle, he'll work to make it so.
I'm enclosing the measurements.
The flowers are beautiful - thanks so much.
Dale finally has his car running so he doesn't have to depend upon others for rides. It's a nice little car & he says it rides good - esp. when he let some air out of the tires. Over 40 lbs. in each tire before.
We're all getting anxious for spring & warmer weather & no snow. It snowed again this A.M. Suppose to warm up.
Lent has started & now there are Wed. midweek services & Thurs. noon services at 1st Meth. followed by a soup & pie luncheon. We enjoy them. Tues. nite I'm leader for Circle & the topic is Unity & I have to put some finishing touches on that.
We never hear from Barb - we wonder what she is going & what her plans are. Maybe we'll find out sometime.
Some kids are playing basketball in the snow. Be cold on the hands.
Last nite 56 members & friends in Hessel Valley church had a Valentine dinner at Maplehurst County Club. Walter & Emma Johnson went with us (he doesn't drive at nite) & we had a great time. Good food & a little program with a Covenant pastor who spoke. Old & young alike.
Next Sun. Mel & Levina Karlson & a young man who started working at the hosp. in Jan. & comes to church, will come for dinner. So I'll have to clean the house this week - didn't dust this past week so it is time to get busy. Have my menu planned. He is from Pittsburgh area - went to Augustana & I thot it would be nice to be sociable & I like to entertain.
On Easter we will go to Dagus Mines. They wanted a pastor for that day & it's hard to say no. We'll go to the Vally on Palm Sun. for Communion, so we'll be free the 1st and 3rd Sun. in Mar.
Things are fine here.
Mon A.M. P.S. Tonite the N.Y.C. channel has 2 hrs. of Jackie Gleason's Honeymooners which we'll tape for future viewing!
