Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

Trick or treating started at 6 pm & by 7 we turned out the light. The candy was gone.
Was up at 5 A.M. & as soon as Dale went to work (7AM) I finished rolls I started on Sun. Sheila & Sue always come by to show us their get-up. They each got 5 rolls, Scott got 4, I ate one & 5 were left. So I walked over to church & gave them to our pastor. Her husband loves them. Then I did my Mon. chores so I'd be ready for Sheila & Sue. I waited all aft. & they didn't come. Mon is our day to get groceries so when Barb came home a little after 4 we left to get groceries. When we (Dale & I) were eating Sheila & Sue came. Right into the kitchen & it was a mess with pans etc. around. Barb had eaten earlier as she had volunteered to answer the door. T hey won $150.000 for prizes for their costume. They love Halloween & are very clever in their ideas.
Now I'm watching TV & relaxing.
The puzzle I chose is a brown building against white snow & tree branches. Not much color. Even Barb doubts my choice. It is far from easy to put together & I wonk I wont' get it done. It was a bad choice!
Frank, across the st, sold his house & has to be out in 3 weeks. He's sorry he has to leave the neighborhood as he has enjoyed living here. He's very friendly whereas we never see the new neighbors, (Carey's house). He'll still be in Warren in a small apt. for the time being.
Maybe you'll see that Ethel Johnson died. Chris's mother. She was 90 last spring & was at the Rouse Home.
I'm watching Psychic Detective. A murder takes place in Greenfield, Mass. before Halloween. Greenfield isn't that far from Spfld.
Wed. aft.
Barb was telling me that Scott was doing thru his mother's jewelry to see if he could find something to give to a girl. Lynn said "no way" is he to give away any of her jewelry. These kids have to "go steady" with someone to be a "jock".
We gave up on the brown & white puzzle, so I'm working on an old one with lots of color.
Tonite I'm having pork chops, succotash, rice, applesauce & banana cream pie. Sounds good to me.
We're enjoying Indian summer & it is so nice.
I ordered Barb's Christmas present, a Danskin toning system, from Penney's. Her choice. And a sweater set for me.
BiLo had Food Club flour, Heinz ketchup, Swanson's broths, each 5 for $5.00. I always get cheese there & our favorite lunch meat, Sahlens ham, was on sale.
Yesterday UPS came to the door with a large envelope for Dale. Good he was home as the Co. wanted proof. Had to see his driver's license. It was a check for $250.00 to buy tools thru their distributor. Trouble is, one hasn't called at Shutls for some time & Dale knows what he's like. He thinks they might have a catalogue he could order form.
We had a nice dinner & visit with Lar & Kim. I can't get any Christmas gift ideas from Kim.
The other A.M. I happened to look out the kitchen. It was 5:30 A.M. & I saw a couple out walking. It reminded me of you two walking in the early A.M.
I'm enjoying putting pieces of the puzzle together. Much nicer than staring at the pieces to see if I can find some that go together.
The yawns are beginning to tell me it is bedtime. When it gets close to 10 pm I'm ready for bed esp. Dale's early week. So I will say good night.

I was sorry to hear of June's death. But I guess it was to be expected - -she lived a long life. 90 years. She & Ruth were born in 1913.
Thurs. nite I didn't sleep well at all. I was really tired last nite & went to bed by 8:20. And I made up for Thurs. nite. Got up about 6:45 a.m. today. It's a cloudy day. Made banana bread, read the paper, made a grocery list but mostly just taking it easy.
Tonite I will see 9 innings of baseball unless the Yankees are way ahead, then I'll switch to another channel.
Yesterday my pastor friends met for lunch in Franklin. Ted & Sue came from Ohio & Ted & Pat would have picked me up but I didn't go. Just didn't feel like hearing the 2 Teds & their know it all taking over the conversation. I might have fallen asleep. I wasn't feeling up to it.
Nov. 7th I have a Dr. appt. & that is the wrong aft. for Barb to take me. So I called Joyce O'Connor & asked for a favor (she had told me to call if she could help in any way) & she will take me. I wanted to take her out to dinner but she said no to that. She said people do favors for me & I do favors for others.
Barb's (O'Connor) daughter is expecting around Dec. 26th. So the family is going to Philly for a shower for her. Bev's son's wife had a baby in Oct. so Joyce is already a great grandmother. Melissa is going to be an optometrist & will have 6 mo. left. Her husband is taking his residence years in a Philly hosp. Still has a couple of years left. High school sweethearts.
Sun. Oct 26
I was so happy last nite to see the Marlins win. Pastor Beth is from Fla. & very happy they won. Denny Crandrell is a Yankee fan & very unhappy. He is married to Elaine Jacobson & they are active members. The Marlin pitcher did so well & only 23. Now we'll be hearing about changes in the team's players. Who will go where. Will Torre be back in N.Y. Baseball is my favorite sport, but I like to watch all of them.
Tues. the 28th
Millie called Sun nite & she was telling me more about the retirement home. She has already started to get rid of things. In Dec. Linda will check to see how close Millie is to get in. She said Spfld. is really getting bad. People don't go downtown any more. They are afraid to. She won't miss Spfld. Once they tell her she has a place, she'll have 30 days to get ready to move. That makes it hard as she might not be able to sell the house that fast. And she doesn't want to put it up for sale now for fear it would see fast & she'd be left without a home. The agent said to leave any furniture she doesn't want as furniture adds to selling a house. I hope it all works out.
Barb started her Christmas shopping & has a good start. I have some thoughts about what I want to do.
With standard time back, it sure gets darker earlier & makes for a long evening.
Let me tell you about this nite in Auburn, Wn. My mother was with us & Dad was meeting with a couple with problems. Around 11 pm, Mom & I went to bed & as I got into bed my water broke. Dad got home & around 3 AM Dad called the Dr. & off we went to the hosp. Can't remember the exact time but you were born between 5-6 AM. It was a busy time as several babies were born thru Halloween. I was in the hosp. 5 days, I think. When I got home I had to make formula & a member L. G. Strand came -- he had to see the new baby. And you were good & didn't even cry for a feeding until after he left. And that's the start of our family.
Wed Oct 29
This A.M. I made a white cake for dessert tomorrow. Then I washed the floor & I'm always glad that's done for 2 weeks.
At lunch time Dale said no treats? And I didn't have any so after my soap & now watching Perry Mason, I made some brownies. The recipe uses Hersheys choc. syrup & I like that recipe. It also has a recipe for the frosting -- using choc. chips & miniature marshmallows. We're having an easy supper. Spag. & meatballs & the meatballs were frozen & I used ready made sauce. Oh I also made an easy recipe. Snack Mix Squares for Sheila & Sue. They close the shop on Halloween -- their favorite holiday -- dress up & visit some schools, nursing homes & they come here to show me their costumes. So I always have a treat for them. It contains the small stick pretzels, corn chex & M&M's. Make a mixture of oleo,k peanut butter & miniature marsh. melted together. Pour it over the pretzels, etc., press it in a buttered foil-lined pan & let set. It's good. This year they are dressing in old fashioned bathing suits. I'll tell more next letter. They always do a great job dressing up.
I'll finish this & then walk to 5th to mail it.
We're having a warm spell & enjoy it.
Nothing special going on with Lar & Kim, or the rest of us. I turned one of the calendars to Nov. Soon it will be Thanksgiving. But it is fun thinking about Christmas preparations & receiving Christmas cards from friends in the past.

We have patches of snow but don't have to shovel. It's been cloudy & I've been lazy & had a nap this aft. Been trying to get a cold & have had a cough. I tired Coldeeze cough drops & they are good. They have zinc in them & that is suppose to be good.
Dale got some frames that fit the 2 bedroom windows in both front bedrooms. Or he cut them to fit & then he plans to put plexiglass in them & they will fit in our windows & help insulate even more. My room gets cold in the winter but my electric blanket keeps me warm.
I hope things work out for you jobwise. I don't know much about it, but I'm sure it will be very interesting. Either way, I know you'll be happy as things are getting accomplished at the library.
When you get today's paper, Warren, Saturday, Nov. 2, be sure to read the letter to the editor by a 9th grade student at Youngsville Hi. Very well written letter from one so young.
Thanks for the pictures of the boys in their football uniforms.
I didn't put the front door light on for Trick or Treat. Why? Because when Lar & Kim are here, I don't c are to be running to the front door. Carey's are in Fla. & no lights are on this end of 3rd. We had Andy's favorite dinner, or one of them, stuffed pork chops. I found a new recipe for corn pudding & it was well received. The difference is it called for 5 slices of bread cubed & put into the casserole & then you pour the corn, egg, milk mixture over them & bake.
The political ads have been so negative. I'll be glad when Tues. is over. I'm sure this has been an extra busy time for JoAnna & she has been run ragged, as the saying goes.
At BiLo, Barb picked up a load of Swedish rye bread & it is so good. Makes me want to plan a Swedish dinner for Christmas Eve. But they aren't too fond of meat balls, rice pudding, etc. that make up the meal. I'll have to start thinking about it & see what I can come up with. Wish I had learned how to make "korv" & "sylta" when my mother made it.
Called Warren H. yesterday to find out about Anna. She was taking a nap. They changed her medication & she is back to her exercise classes at the hospital so she is monitored them.
Sunday, Nov. 3
The Coldeeze cough drops are really good. I've had a nagging cough & it really helped. You don't eat them like candy. You take them at 4 hr. intervals & never on an empty stomach. I took one before church & I didn't cough.
Since Dale doesn't need a regular Sunday dinner, I made a recipe that was in one Sat. paper awhile ago. Take frozen shredded potatoes. Fry them 8-10 min. Add diced ham, onion, seasoning, etc. T hen pour beaten eggs over & cook til firm. Add shredded cheese. I'm sure you've made something like that, Paul. Dale thought it was good; so did I. It was filling & I couldn't finish mine. An easy meal which I like.
Mon. A.M. the 4th
This is Dale's early week & I heard him get up at 5:30. I turned over & the next time I looked at the clock it was 6:11. Got up in a hurry -- he had to get his own cereal bowl, banana & milk. I made coffee & got his mid A.M. snack ready. Of course he can do it but I like to have it ready. We both survived! I don't like getting up in a rush & I like company for breakfast. We both look at the newspaper but someone is there.
I put clean sheets on Dale's bed on Monday & when I made the bed I noticed the windows were up & it is such a professional job. They are double glass Andersen windows but still it feels cold esp. when my room doesn't get much heat. I couldn't "push" Dale, Paul like I did you!!! But I wish he could have wanted to go to some kind of technical school to improve his natural ability. They are in the place of the screens, not needed in winter. (out of place sentence)
Tues. the Big Day
I'm sitting in my chair after walking to Calvary Baptist (outside bldg) to vote -- so I did my duty. Even remembered the question at the top of the ballot. Not much to vote on. Gov. Lt. Gov. & state rep. I had to walk carefully as there are wet leaves on bad sidewalks. It's a nice day so the walk was invigorating.
Last nite was LCW - -our thank offering program. Patty W. Phillips was in charge. Barb took me over & Janice Carlson took me home. It will be interesting to see the returns tonite.
Wed A.M. the 6th.
Congratulations to JoAnna on a job well done. Imagine you celebrated into the morning hours. When I went to bed at 10:30 p.m. I noticed that Doyle was creeping up & I thought then "I bet he will win". And he did. It must have been a wonderful feeling as well as a relief that your hard work paid off. What comes next?
Lynch won in the Warren area but I bet he was scared for awhile. It was a very close call. I think a better candidate could have beat him. He'll do better (Lynch) if he lets go of a little ego.
Thurs the 7th
It's a sunshine day & I needed a prescription filled. So I got a ride over with Barb. I went to CVS, cashed a rebate check, went to the library & got 2 books. Final Target by Iris Johansen & Three Weeks in Paris by Barbara Taylor Bradford. Got Christmas stamps at the P.O.! Dale had a mtg at work so he wasn't home for lunch. I just finished washing the kitchen floor so with the exception of fixing dinner, my chores are over for today.
Tomorrow we go to Erie -- that is why I went to the library -- to have a book to read on the way. It is suppose to warm up & be a nice day so we're lucky. Hope we find things we want. Many stores are having sales.
It was good talking to JoAnna last nite. I'm sure she is in for a lot of interesting experiences.

Marv Gustafson was chosen chairman of the Church Council. They met with the new Bishop & he said he was impressed with him. Will be very easy to work with. Quite different from Paull Spring. So far no vice pastor has been appointed.
I was so thrilled last nite with the Ariz win over the Yankees. Now if only they can do it today & win the Series. I hoped Schilling can get the best of Clemens. His bubble needs to be punctured!
I have a 1000 pc. puzzle on the card table & I should finish it tonite while watching the game.
I'm sending you a picture of Sheila, Sue & friends on Halloween. Sheila & Sue came by on Halloween & I had cookies for them. Also I'm enclosing pictures Ruth sent me.
Genevieve Stark, Lila Stark, Mim Warren, Ruth Benander
Barb wants to go to Erie Fri, next, the 9th. It has to be a nice day -- mostly cloudy weather is forecast.
Your info on the libraries was interesting. Nice to see how others are doing it. You guided a new library to be built, & Dad guided a new church. Good experience.
I'm watching Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore. Pitts. is doing better this year. They lost.
Do you remember Harry Nasman -- he died on Sat. just short of his 85th birthday. Had a daughter Gretchen & can't remember the son's name. First wife died, married again. Son is Tom & they have a daughter Linda.
Mon A.M., the 5th
I'm on "cloud 9". Last nite I stayed up until 11:15 or so & was so happy when Ariz. beat the Yankees. What a 9th inning for Ariz. I couldn't have been happier if it had been the Mets! So many of the guys are in their 30s so it is great for them to get a World Series ring. Ex Cub Grace doesn't mind the move now.
Howard Ford has been sick & after many, many years, he resigned as St. :Paul's treasurer. He was treasurer when we moved here, I'm sure. Or soon after. It's a big job but the church sec'y does the counting, etc. so that is a big help.
Torey had to go back to the vet. Lar had to change the dressing & he didn't wind the gauze or whatever & it came off & because he wags his tail so much, it started to bleed. Kim isn't happy with the vet (this came about last Thurs. when they were here for supper) & Lar said "we're not changing vets." That upset Kim & she was very quiet during the meal. She left for her 7:30 Birthday Club. I'm sure she'll get her way in the end.
This is Dale's early week so I was up at 5:45 after a short sleeping nite. It was hard getting to sleep after the excitement.
We checked out waffle irons & they weight heavy so I think I'll send money so you can choose your own. Will that be OK. How's the list coming? I need ideas for Eddie's birthday.
Just the usual happenings here.

Sunday, November 5, 2000
I was tired last nite so it was "early to bed & early to rise" & the house is quiet & I'm set for church except to get into my dress.
Got my Thanksgiving cards for "the sisters" & started writing notes. 4 on Carl's side & 2 on my side.
Kim is afraid the teachers will strike & to make up the days they will lose all their holidays & she doesn't like that. I hope they ca work it out. In my memory there has been at least one strike.
On Halloween 2 interesting things happened. I cleaned the bathroom on Tues. & keep my bucket on the attic stairs. When I went to fill the bucket there was another bat. I dropped everything, closed the door & quit working. No one was home so when Dale came for lunch he took care of it.
Just before lunch the doorbell rang (I was glad I had showered & was presentable) & when I answered there were 3 persons in costume & I only expected 2 so for a minute I was at a loss for words. It was Sheila & Sue with Sue's boyfriend. (Don't know what happened to her husband.) Their get up was so good. Barb took pictures so yesterday when I walked over town I gave them each a picture. They came out so good & clear. It was the last picture on the film & that aft. we went to the Mall & she dropped them at KMart & they were ready on Fri. The pictures at the Dam came out so clear & nice. She only wished a couple were closer up but she wanted the background. She plans to send some. She, meaning Barb.
Yesterday I went into D&K to get some Christmas wrapping. This one clerk recognizes me & I said I wanted wrap so when my soon comes at Thanksgiving they can take some gifts back. She wondered if there were grandchildren & when I said yes, she said we have some nice clothes for children, trying to be helpful. I didn't want to hurt her feelings so I said I'll look next time I'm in. But I can't imagine Andy wanting anything from D&K to wear. Or Eddie, either.
Saw Mrs. Africa recently & she raved about the driveway. Thinks it's wonderful.
Now it's afternoon & I'm watching golf on TV.
Yesterday I had a turkey roast so today we're having left overs. Easy meal.
Yesterday Dale went to Frewsburg to see his friend & on the way he got a flat tire. On the El Camino. He changed the tire himself. Today he cleaned it up & back to the garage it goes. So he'll drive the Blazer. He'll get new tires..
The refrig. in the basement won't work so Dale plans to get rid of it. In its place he'll put a new set of shelves he bought. We have an attic & a basement & still the space is filled. Lots of junk.
This aft. Kim was going to tag several Christmas trees. She'll tag one of us so we'll have a real tree again. Plan to put in the area by the L.R. mirror. Reason: when it was by the stairs I couldn't sit & watch TV & see the tree at the same tie. Now when I sit in my chair I can see both. Just have to move the rocking chair. I like to see the lights.
Upstairs Barb is clapping so Buff must be doing OK. Now it's a tie & overtime. They won.
Warren Hollertz called last week. The group will get together Mon. Nov 20 at noon. Someplace outside of Youngsville & they'll pick me up. They had visited their son in Hartford & just came home from a visit in Ohio to their middle daughter. They get around. He said their anniversary was great. Will be nice to see everyone again.
We still plan to go to Erie next Fri. On Sat. I'll get a permanent. I really need one -- my hair is getting long & straggly.
Just had a nice visit with Gen on the telephone. It was my turn to call. Ed answered the phone & he wondered about the Mets. He always has to tease me. But I got him back telling him the Mets did better than Boston by reading the World Series.
We're suppose to have showers in Tues. Hope they aren't bad ones. I like to vote in the A.M. & walk to Calvary Baptist church to vote. Then at 4 I see the Dr.
Guess I've covered all the news here. Before you know it, it will be Thanksgiving.

Our sunshine left us & it is cloudy & showers today.
I'm not watching football this aft. as skating is on & I want to see Michelle Kwan skate.
After the World Series there is life! Now I'm reading the news to see who will be traded & where. Wonder how the Mets' lineup will be changed - not too much I hope. The series did me in with the late hours (it was Dale's early week 7-4) & I couldn't miss the end. What a series. Glad it's over.
I meant to call you Thurs. nite at 10 our time. Went up to bed & never thought about the call - I'm 79 you understand - but I did try to 10:15 A.M. EDT but there was no answer so you must have gotten an early start.
My new chairs will be delivered on Fri. the 5th of Nov. Larry tho't maybe Mike Brindis might like the old one & he does so I don't have to call Salvation Army.
Sheila (hair) & Sue took Fri. off as they love Halloween. They dressed up as devils & they came by to show me their outfits. Paid 40.00 for the wigs - they were great. Spent 100.00 ea. on costumes.
I just flipped to watch golf as Barb said some players are wearing knickers to honor Payne Stewart. I saw some of the funeral or memorial service on TV & it was very emotional. That was so sad.
Kim was telling us about her sister. She wasn't feeling well & 1 Dr said 1 thing & sent her to a specialist who had a different answer & had her all mixed up. But things got straightened out & a cyst was removed but she might yet have to have another operation. Her 2 aunts are close by & they have been good to help & to keep Kim informed. Kim says she will have a huge phone bill this month as they have long conversations.
Dale has his Blazer ready for winter & will garage the Monte Carlo for the winter. Tues. he goes to Rochester for an all-day session. Will leave Mon. nite. I think it's Thurs. & Fri. he goes again & this time Sam will also go. They should have a good time!
Back to Kim - one thing that helped to upset them was the fact their mother died young & Debbie tho't she was going to die.
I'm sure you folks will have to see the Pokemon movie coming Nov. 12. I'm enclosing a page from one of the magazines.
It's 6:35 pm & I'm set for Trick & Treat. Have 66 candy bars - small ones & once they are gone & it isn't 8 pm I'll turn out the light. It's from 6-8 pm.
Barb now has 4 different jobs. Lynn wants Barb to work 6 hrs a week picking up & organizing things. The regular cleaning gals don't do that. She seems to enjoy the work. Bert is always or most always around but the others aren't. Barb has 4 different house keys. Nancy's mother Barbara Jacobs doesn't work but plays cards the Fri. Barb is there. She was at that one Thanksgiving dinner when she first moved here.
Tues A.M. I want to bring this to a close & mail it when I go to vote at Calvary Baptist youth bldg. It's showery & heavy rains are predicted so I'll get going by 8:45 A.M.
Correction - Dale's next study at Rochester won't be til the middle of the month. He left last night at 6 pm & will be home for supper tonite.
Our summer weather has come to an end. Colder weather is predicted to start this aft.
What's happening to Green Bay. It's disappointing but I guess we know we don't win all the time.

Dear Andy,
Have fun on Halloween.
Your dad writes that you are very busy with school work, football & music. We like your football picture a lot. We are glad that you are doing so well.
Dale has been working on the Blazer, his winter car. It is being painted now. Even Dale has to take tests. He got a 94 on one of them. He took another one yesterday. They have to know that Dale knows what he is doing when he works on cars. They are all computerized now.
We are proud of you & we love you.
Dear Eddie,
Your dad sent us your latest school picture. We like it a lot. I think it looks like you are flirting.
We also like the school calendar and your drawing on the month of September. We have a budding artist in our family. That is wonderful.
We hear that you are doing very well in soccer. Warren High has a soccer team and it wins most of their games. The football team isn't very good. Memorial Field where they play football and soccer is being upgraded so it will really e a good field when it is completed. T hey are spending a lot of moneyh on it. Bet your dad has read about it in the Warren paper.
Have a fun Halloween.
