I couldn't decide if I should bake this A.M. or Mon.   But Mon. is suppose to be in the 80's & this A.M. is cloudy so I made blueberry load & a pumpkin pie.  I'm down to my last 2 Danish rolls & if I'm ambitious I'll start a recipe on Sun, get up early Mon. & bake the rolls.   (I was!)

Asked Dale if he'd have Sat. off (his week to work Sat) & he said probably not.  But he did.  Seeing it is cloudy he decided to wash his car.  According to Dale you never wash  your car in the sun!

Yesterday when Warren & Anna picked me up, he said Anna didn't care where we ate (her turn to choose) so he chose the Chinese restaurant.  I like to go there because you can choose what & how much you want.  Some Chinese food doesn't appeal to me, bu9t there is variety.  While we were sitting there in comes Larry & Mike Brindis.  They go to lunch often on Fri.  Larry's treat I'm sure as Mike doesn't have much money.  Lar shook hands with Warren & Anna & talked a bit.  Warren had gotten 3 $1.00 lottery tickets, passed them out & we scraped them off & I won $5.00.  Warren gets half so I only get 2.50 but at least there was one winner, however small it was.  We have fun reading the paper in the fortune cookies.  I like to eat the crisp cooky.

Last nite Barb was ambitious.  Changed & washed her sheets.  Made her version of goulash & made peanut butter cookies using organic as much as possible.  She doesn't always eat what I prepare.  Fri. nite I ordered pizza, tonite we'll have hamburgers, etc., Sun chicken legs, & Mon. steaks.  Plan to make potato salad on Mon.

Remember what the Dr. said, "You had made surgery," so don't rush your recovery!  As you wrote, you are 56 years old!  Have to get a little motherly advice in.

Thurs. I made a fruit salad & the watermelon & strawberries tasted so good.

Barb hasn't been able to ride her bike as often as she hoped, due to the weather.  Maybe this weekend she can make up for it.

One of Kim's friend's daughter is getting married in June so Kim is hosting a shower for 15 this aft.   She plans on chicken salad, which she ordered from a store, bakery rolls, fruit salad including strawberries & watermelon, punch & an ordered cake.  So most of the food is ready made but she'd have to get the house in order, etc. so she is a bush gal.  And Sun. she'll play golf in a tournament for the dog pound.  They are building a larger building for the dog pound.  She'll be gone most of Sun -- there is a dinner when awards are given out, etc.  She'll have Mon. to rest up & then school is still (my mind wandered) will soon be over.  Kim hopes to teach 11 more years & then she'll have a 25 yr. pension.  A good money difference from 20 to 25 years.   USA is having a good series son saving money for retirement.  I'm surprised at the money debt people have on their charge cards & what they don't save.

Forgot to mention after lunch, we went to the new Dollar store in the same area as the restaurant.  Still empty spaces to fill up.  They have some good prices & everything is light, airy & clean looking.  We both shopped a bit.

Finished my puzzle Thurs. nite.  It is such a pretty picture.  Barb started one she bought.

When we were at the Bon Ton we looked at hanging chimes for the porch.  Kim & Lar gave me one & Barb said we needed another one to balance the picture.  So we found one & the nice part they were 60% off so it was less than 10.00.  One chimes, one twirls in the wind.  We really had wind last weekend.

Time to think of lunch.

Sun. nite

I'm sitting on the porch enjoying the nice evening.  This aft when Barb was out & Dale sunning himself, I turned on the kitchen TV & watched the Mets & set my rolls for tomorrow A.M.  I can enjoy a fresh roll with my coffee.  I fixed homefried chicken legs in the oven & ended up with a hot kitchen.  Tho't we could eat in the dining room under the fan, but remembered the NASCAR race started at 5:30 pm & Dale would want to watch it.  Barb bro't a fan down from the attic & that helped a bit.

The new neighbor across the st. cleared a lot of the old shrubbery & now it is nice to sit on the porch & look across the st.

The pastor's baby was 1 year old on your anniversary.  I sent a card with a gift of money.  People were so good to us, so I felt right in doing this.  This A.M. she told me how much they appreciated it & I know she means it.

Our new organist starts next Sun.  Just hope we can keep him.  After church this A.M., we had a brief mtg. to accept a bid to paint the exterior of the church windows, trim, pillars, etc.  No problem it was OK'ed.  It will be some over $3,000.00   One bid was $8000.00.  Donald Gustafson, Jr. will do the job.  A Christmas & Easter member.

We had some extra flowers so Barb planted 2 pots & they are on the front porch.  She also planted the barrel by the front steps.  Begonias & a vine.  I got 45 cosmos plants, old time favorites, & they are on the porch with 2 begonias & a petunia plant.  They will fill out as they begin to grow.   And I see rose buds on the plants between the garage & the back door.  I love roses.

Does Andy think the Braves can catch the Mets.  I hope not!  The Mets have to give more support to Pedro M. so he can win a game after pitching so well.

Someone up the st. has to mow his lawn so I'll go inside -- out of noise reach.

Wed. last day of May!

This A.M. Barb & I went to Jamestown.  I was looking for a pair of tan shoes & ended up buying a pr. of navy shoes.  Again everything is the mule shoe but not for me.  At Sears I saw a pr. of navy low heels & I grabbed them.  Haven't seen much in navy.  I do have a pr. of tan shoes I can wear.  We didn't eat out.  Went to Wegman's & then home.

We've had the high heat & it is wearing me out.  Thunderstorms will bring cooler weather tomorrow.

This A.M. I cleaned the bathroom as I knew I wouldn't want to clean this aft.  I've been watching Hou. at StL & the score is tied in the 10th.  I don't' know why ESPN has to have 3 men in the booth & all they do is talk & tell their views.  It's on mute except for Jon & Joe Sun nites.

I haven't turned on the A.C., just have a fan in the kitchen & the ceiling fan in the D.R.

This is Dale's early week & when he comes home he changes to shorts & sits in the sun.  He likes the heat.

Fri. June 2

Last nite Kim stayed til about 8:15, talking.  She finally realized she can't take Torey on long walks.  Just a couple of blocks now.  Think she realizes Torey is on his "last legs".  What a sad day it will be when he is no longer with us.

Earlier in the year she had mentioned 6 teachers (1 at Sheffield) had been caught exchanging porn material on their computers.  5 men, 1 woman.  Their consequences:  the last 2 weeks they are out of school with no pay.  She doesn't know if more will come -- punishment, that is, such as losing their jobs.   The one from S.H.S had finished his qualifications to became a principal & now that won't happen.  Talk about kids not thinking of what can happen -- adults surely should.

Barb is organizing a garage sale for Lynn.  Something Lynn doesn't like to do.  She started yesterday & just left to spend a couple more hours sorting things out.  Barb could be a professional organizer -- she's telling me I should be more organized.  At this late date, I think I'm pretty well organized.  Sometimes her room looks like she should practice what she preaches.  All is well here.

Monday, October 31, 2005

Trick or treating started at 6 pm & by 7 we turned out the light.  The candy was gone.

Was up at 5 A.M. & as soon as Dale went to work (7AM) I finished rolls I started on Sun. Sheila & Sue always come by to show us their get-up.  They each got 5 rolls, Scott got 4, I ate one & 5 were left.  So I walked over to church & gave them to our pastor.  Her husband loves them.  Then I did my Mon. chores so I'd be ready for Sheila & Sue.  I waited all aft. & they didn't come.  Mon is our day to get groceries so when Barb came home a little after 4 we left to get groceries.  When we (Dale & I) were eating Sheila & Sue came.  Right into the kitchen & it was a mess with pans etc. around.  Barb had eaten earlier as she had volunteered to answer the door.  T hey won $150.000 for prizes for their costume.  They love Halloween & are very clever in their ideas.

Now I'm watching TV & relaxing.

The puzzle I chose is a brown building against white snow & tree branches.  Not much color.  Even Barb doubts my choice.  It is far from easy to put together & I wonk I wont' get it done.  It was a bad choice!

Frank, across the st, sold his house & has to be out in 3 weeks.  He's sorry he has to leave the neighborhood as he has enjoyed living here.  He's very friendly whereas we never see the new neighbors, (Carey's house).  He'll still be in Warren in a small apt. for the time being.

Maybe you'll see that Ethel Johnson died.  Chris's mother.  She was 90 last spring & was at the Rouse Home.

I'm watching Psychic Detective.  A murder takes place in Greenfield, Mass. before Halloween.  Greenfield isn't that far from Spfld.

Wed. aft.

Barb was telling me that Scott was doing thru his mother's jewelry to see if he could find something to give to a girl.  Lynn said "no way" is he to give away any of her jewelry.  These kids have to "go steady" with someone to be a "jock".

We gave up on the brown & white puzzle, so I'm working on an old one with lots of color.

Tonite I'm having pork chops, succotash, rice, applesauce & banana cream pie.  Sounds good to me.

We're enjoying Indian summer & it is so nice.

I ordered Barb's Christmas present, a Danskin toning system, from Penney's.  Her choice. And a sweater set for me.

BiLo had Food Club flour, Heinz ketchup, Swanson's broths, each 5 for $5.00.  I always get cheese there & our favorite lunch meat, Sahlens ham, was on sale.

Yesterday UPS came to the door with a large envelope for Dale.  Good he was home as the Co. wanted proof.  Had to see his driver's license.  It was a check for $250.00 to buy tools thru their distributor.  Trouble is, one hasn't called at Shutls for some time & Dale knows what he's like.  He thinks they might have a catalogue he could order form.

We had a nice dinner & visit with Lar & Kim.  I can't get any Christmas gift ideas from Kim.

The other A.M. I happened to look out the kitchen.  It was 5:30 A.M. & I saw a couple out walking.  It reminded me of you two walking in the early A.M.

I'm enjoying putting pieces of the puzzle together.  Much nicer than staring at the pieces to see if I can find some that go together.

The yawns are beginning to tell me it is bedtime.  When it gets close to 10 pm I'm ready for bed esp. Dale's early week.  So I will say good night.

Tuesday, September 13, 2005

This is Dale's Tues. to work til 8 so Barb & I went to Perkins for supper.  Will fix tacos for Dale later.

I'll try to answer some quick questions.  You mentioned greetings from Janet Lavelle.  The other pastor who picnicked with us was Russell & Mildred Lundgren from Titusville.  He was older than Dad & we lost contact with them.  He moved a lot.

I enjoyed reading about JoAnna's aunts and uncles.  I hope her mother is feeling better.

Sun. Gen called.  She asked about the girls & wondered how they are -- are they in school, etc.  I went along with her.  She must be living in the past.  The only girls I can think of is the 4 of us girls growing up.

I should write notes for letters.  I know there is something else I want to write about but it won't come forth.

I got 5 more books & have read 3 of them.  All very good.  Nora Robers Northern Lights set in Alaska.  Sandra Brown's Above & Beyond set in Texas & Shattered Silk by Barbara Michaels set in D.C.  I'm so glad I love to read & enjoyed these books so much.  (Finished the 4th.  New Orleans setting.  5th a repeat I won't read.)

There is another house on 3rd Ave. E up for sale.  The very last house up the st. on our side. Someone is working on the little house across the st.  Barb thinks they are getting ready to paint it.

Fall is budget time at church -- pledges, etc.  In her column in the church's newsletter, our pastor talked about sacrificial giving.  She wrote her husband likes to buy videos & she likes to eat out once in awhile but they don't -- they practice sacrifice giving.  The first yr. they went on a cruise for vacation & this year they planned a trip to Hawaii but cancelled due to the baby.  Now all of a sudden they can't afford a few small pleasures of life.  It left me with a bad feeling.  Their housing expenses, gas allowance, hosp. insurance, plus is given them so if they budgeted they should be able to do a few things.  I don't know how other people felt.  I know when you kids were little we didn't eat out a lot & still gave a good amount to the church.  Just a little gripe & it won't stop me from doing my part.

Wed. the 14th

The Warren radio said the 5th Ave. bridge won't be started until next March.

We're still having perfect weather.  When Dale left yesterday after lunch, he commented when he gets home after 8 pm, it will be dark.  Sure enough it was & I put the back door light on to welcome him home.

I picked 2 red roses yesterday & they are so lovely.  A few more buds on coming along.

Fri. A.M.

Just got back from having my hair done.  Barb didn't sleep much last nite so she went back to bed.  After I finish this letter I plan to think about meal planning.  Have my recipes out & grocery list so we'll see what happens.

Dale likes to watch TV when he eats.  He's like a little kid -- he gets so involved his food gets cold.  And besides, he is a slow eater, compared to the rest of us.

I don't know if you knew Rick Schomer, one of Dale's friends.  He is involved with the Mercy Ship that goes to different poor areas & helps out.  Rick & his wife stopped by work to see Sam & Dale.  Later in the aft. he came here & we had a nice visit.  He builds & his wife is an M.D.  Very nice. They leave Oct. 1 for Guatemala & they have to raise money for them to live while there.  They were on their way to Boston.  They didn't ask me for support just to remember them in my prayers.

It was very nice to talk to Andy last night.  He said he had a nice birthday.  Next one will be yours.  That means fall is here & the holidays are ahead & all that goes with them.  I look forward to it all.

Better get to my menu planning.

Larry gave himself a "buzz" haircut.  He likes it -- easy to wash & easy to comb, meaning he doesn't have to comb it.

The bridge is opened but not completely finished.  The sidewalks have to be finished.  We haven't driven over it yet --I don't' go to the Dr. until Oct.

Last Fri. we went to Jamestown.  I only got groceries at Wegman's.

This A.M. I was ambitious.  Washed the counters, moving everything.  Washed the windows, even tried to do the outside but didn't do a good job.  I'm getting too old to climb by the sink & try to get the outside & not get it streaked.  Afraid I'll fall.  Anyway when Barb came downstairs my work inspired her to start cleaning the kitchen. She washed the walls by the sink & the cupboard woodwork.  Cleaned the lower cupboards & they look nice.  She's cleaning in sections as she went to Lynn's in the aft.

When I read your letter about the dinner -- I had to look in the dictionary to see what kind of sauce you had with the lamb.  I found out it is made with egg yolks, lemon, rice & chicken broth.  I thought I had memorized the spelling but I can't recall how it starts.

Gen called me last Fri.  Ed built a little place for swimmer to change.  Gen said 2 girls are sleeping there & won't leave & she didn't know what to do.  I was sure that wasn't true & I told her to lock the doors & forget about it.  Called Millie on Sat.  She said when she lived in Spfld. a neighbor had Alzheimer's & she was always saying someone is in her garage.  Gen also says Ed isn't dead -- he has a girlfriend.  Millie thinks Gen thinks John is Ed, because she never talks about John.  Just says the boys help her.

Larry & Kim had a busy weekend last Fri-Sun.  On Fri they went to a wedding in the Pittsburgh area -- a former student.  Sat. & Sun. they went to Niagara on the Lake with another couple who are older.  We'll hear about their weekend on Thurs.  Niagara on the Lake is near St. Catherine, Canada.

Our pastor is back.  Elaine Jacobson Crandall, Barb's age, was the "grandma" to be in charge of the baby.  Different ones will help out during the service.  Elaine's oldest daughter is expecting so she will get getting some practice.

Last weekend Sheila (hair) & her husband were going to Pittsburgh for the weekend.  One nite they were going on a 3 hr. cruise featuring a fish buffet -- all kinds of fish.  Sounds interesting.

Last nite there wasn't much on TV so I turned to TCM & there was a good movie:  Key Largo with Lauren Bacall, Claire Trevor, Humphrey Bogart, Ed. G. Robinson & Lionel Barrymore.  It meant I had to stay up longer but I couldn't leave it.  It was so good.  And all those stars.  It was great.

Thurs the 4th

I was up at 5AM -- you say "why when she is retired & could sleep in?"  I wanted to get a carrot cake in the oven & pot. salad made before it got too hot.  I don't turn on the AC til later.  I open the doors & windows to cool off & put the dining room fan on.  Then I got dressed, etc., watered the plants, rose bushes, pot & all.  Decided to pick some ripe blueberries off our bush & now I'm resting.  Soon I'll have a cup of coffee & sample the carrot cake.  We're having steaks, pot. salad, green beans, & broccoli salad & carrot cake for our Thurs nite dinner.  Barb does the grilling & the rest of the meal is in the fridge.  Just the beans to fix.  I'll sit in my chair & watch my favorite TV programs.

The last week of July there was Vacation Bible School.  The last Sun. of July some of the children sang the new song in church & 2 older ones had the sermon on the Bible verses used.  Denise Johnson Windlow's oldest daughter had a part & she speaks so well, loud enough & with expression.  Will be a soph. at Wrrn. Hi.  She has lectored & does a great job.  Nice to see the youth take a part in the service.

I paid the tax bill on the house & also the insurance on the house.  Also in Aug. I play for the newspaper for a year plus a tip for the paperboy.  And I still have money in my checking acct.  I'm very fortunate.

Wednesday, June 29, 2005

My next letter will be written in July.  Times is too fast for me.

I'll start with Sun.  Our pastor, her husband, tiny baby Jason & Pastor Beth's mother were in church. The baby is just 8 lbs. and doing OK.  He is the size of a baby doll.  And we got bad news -- our organist was in the hospital & had to resign as organist.  It's a big loss ^& organists "are as scarce as hen's teeth" as the old saying goes.

Sun. nite we had an enjoyable time & good dinner at Nickel Inn.  They have hummingbird feeders outside the windows & you can see them feeding.  It still is a very popular place to eat.

I'm watching Nelson Eddy & Marie Jeannette MacDonald (where was my mind? on Nelson Eddy!!) on Turner Classic channel.  They've been showing "The Thin Man" series the past week.

We are enjoying the A.C. during this hot spell.  Suppose to be less humid for the 4th of July weekend.

Ray Forstrum (Youngsville) is preaching during the pastor's absence & I think he depends a lot on "the barrel" for his sermons (old ones).  It sounds like he doesn't prepare that much & repeats himself.  I suppose it's hard to say "no" & there aren't that many retired pastors to supply.  I'm glad Dad quit before he couldn't do a good job.

This A.M. I was out early watering the pots with flowers & the ones on the porch.  For 2 days Barb's been putting off picking strawberries.  It's 8:45 & she is still in bed.  She was going to get up early & go pick.  I don't know what the word "early" means to her.

Last Sun. she asked Dale what time church started.  She didn't think Dale was right wen he said 9:30 A.M.  You see I leave at 9:10 & that is way too early for Barb.  I like to be early as there are always others there ahead of me.  Guess I get that from my dad.  He always wanted to be early rather than late.

Barb had a film developed at BiLo in one hour & she was very pleased with the results.  She's also getting some more prints made.

Every day the weather channel shows showers, and we need rain, but nothing happens.  Finally Monday pm we got about 1/3 rain with a lot of wind.

John Harper's pic & article are in today's paper.  I'm sure you'll notice it.

I'm thru, except for getting the garbage ready for Thurs, so Ill take it easy.  I just cleaned the bathroom & towels are washing.

Fri. July 1

I'd better finish this & get it mailed.

Last nite Courtney was here for dinner.  Bert & 3 others went out to eat so Barb was responsible for Courtney.  She just finished 7th grade & has the teenage problems with her mother.  They are here for 1 more week.  Later Barb & Courtney went to the mall, Lar left for work & Kim walked Torey home.

Bon Ton is having a 4th of July sale & Kim went shopping for a dress for Lar's 35 anniv. of graduation.  It will be at the Country Club.  She found a 50.00 dress, with the sale coupon etc. it cost $14.95.  She got some decorations (from a 50% off table) for her newly painted kitchen.

Barb & I will go up this Aft.  Barb always says I don't need anything but she can't refuse a sale.  Recently she has bought, on sale, about 5 pr. capri pants.  Last week I saw a blouse I really liked but not in my size so I lost out.

At the Mall Kim saw one of her ex-students.  She tho't he'd never leave Sheffield.  But he joined the Army & soon will go to Iraq for a year.  She said he looked so good & was nice to talk to.  She welcomed the change.

Barb picked 7 qt. strawberries & said it was easy picking.  Had strawberry shortcake last nite, chicken from BiLo (already cooked), potato salad & beans from the garden.  Strawberry & watermelon salad.  Easy & delicious.

Sheila had the start of a tooth implant so isn't working today.  I got mixed up -- didn't realize the appt. was for Thurs. & I missed it.  So I have to wash my hair myself.  I used to do it so I'll hope for the best.

I love Turner Classic Movies.  I really enjoy watching them.

Don't work too hard!  Enjoy your party.

This aft. I saw the Dr.  My blood tests were all good & my blood pressure wsa 130/60 & that is very good for me.  It was higher last time in Feb.  So I will just keep taking my meds & vitamins.

Did you happen to see the amazing catch Met M. Cameron at R.F. made.  I'm sure it was repeated many times.  He was running to catch a ball, tripped & fell & put out his hand & the ball dropped right in.  A catch he never knew he would make.  It would have been a triple for Cruz, Jr. of the Rockies.  It was great.  Pedro pitched a great game.  When he was traded to the Mets I was n't sure about the deal.  It seemed he was temperamental, etc. but he fits in great with the Mets so it's nice ot have a good pitcher.

Ask Any how it feels to slide into a base just ahead of the ball.  Does he slide feet first or head first.  They say feet first is better.  The other way fingers or hands could get hurt.  Why do pitchers keep fiddling with their caps.  Taking them off & on.  The only pitch I recognize is the curve ball, maybe fast ball.

Lynn will have a garage sale tomorrow (Sat) & Barb is up there now helping her.  Barb folded clothes, etc. to help her during the week.  She put masking tape on the articles & Lynn prices them. Having to take me to the Dr. held her up -- that's her job to take me to appointments.

Shults, Wrrn. has added Toyota cards to their selling program.  Dale says they don't have enough space for all the cars now, & tools & working area.

Today I saw a spider on the stove -- went for a paper towel to kill it but Dale let it live.  He has a thing for spiders.  For one summer he had a spider web in the garage & kept it safe & even tried to feed it.  I was a big one.

Sat. aft the 4th

This A.M. we went to Sears & before I do anything I'll see if something can be done to our washer.  The salesman said they could fix this problem.  I thought this would be my last washing machine.

Then we went nto Lawn & Garden as Barb needed more garden stuff.

We ended up at the Mall.  The earrings Barb likes were on sale.  She got 2 prs. & I got some white earrings.  I got some paper supplies at theh 1.00 store.  Kim says she gets all her paper supplies & cleaners there.  A better buy.

Sun. aft.

While watching the Mets they said there would be a special (paper) on the Mets.  So Barb got a N.Y. Times (that was the paper) but it must have been for the local area.  But I found the "sun Styles " had a couple of interesting article & wondered if you read them.  On p. 11 "A Bad Case of Puppy Love".  It was cute.  P. 3 "Love Thy Busybody".  Another cute one.  Stories like you might write.

This aft. I watched Pitts. beat the Braves & Pitts. took the series.  They are doing well & I like Pitts announcers.  The Mets were rained out Sat. so there is a doubleheader going on now 4 pm.  Mets will be on ESPN at 8 pm.  Mets are playing San Fran & the Mets are improving.

I see the "George" says the Yankees must improve.  If they don't will there be a new mgr?  Who cares, not me.  Their skid makes me happy.

Our pastor was in church today -- Pastor Ray Forstrum had the service. She made an announcement.  The baby is home but they can't have any visitors for 2 weeks & the baby can't go out in a crowd for 2 weeks. s We won't see her until the middle of July.  She will be on maternity leave.

Wed. A.M. the 8th

Summer has arrived.  There are buds on the rose bushes & the plants Barb planted from seed are coming along fine.  I've sat on the front porch & it is nice to watch the birds, etc.

Did Andy notice (as of this A.M.) that Atl. & N.Y.M. are tied for 2nd place with Wn. in 1st place.  Looks good to me. (Didn't last long.  Fri. the 9th)

School is over on Fri. the 10th.  I said to Barb "I bet Scott won't go to school on Fri."  Her reply, "Oh no, he'll want to see his friends."  I was right (for once) he won't go to school on Fri.

Just wrote a note to Gen to add to her birthday card.  She will be 83 on Mon.  She won't realize it is her birthday until John tells her.  She doesn't know how old she is.  It's so sad.

Thanks for the pictures.  Andy looks nice in his baseball uniform.  When does he start his summer job.  What about Ed -- will he get a summer job.

Collins on Conewango have their home up for sale.  It's probably getting to be too much for him to keep up.  It will be interesting to see if it sells before Frank's does.  (Across the st.)  Collins keeps his property in top condition.  Frank's yard upkeep leaves a lot to be desired.

This A.M. Dale asked me if I heard them painting the crosswalk lines about 1:30 A.M. (not much traffic).  He said the machine was so noisy it woke him up & Barb as well.  I didn't hear a thing.  Am I losing my hearing -- I don't think so -- I was really tired last nite & must have been in the deep sleep cycle.

I see the Mets picked a pitcher in the draft who is suppose to be pretty good.  Time will tell.  A few years ago, it seems to me they tho't that about Isringhausen & 2 others but they didn't work out as regular pitchers.  It seems only to happen for the Braves.  Wed. aft. & I'm watching Toronto at the Cubs -- after I watched "As the World Turns" which is getting very exciting.  Me & my soaps!

I took the easy way out & got pizza for supper, delivered from Pizza Hut.  The one who delivered it used to work at Shults & recognized Dale's car.  The Monte Carlo.  He said "that's Dale's car & I want it!"  More than one would like the car but he's not selling it.

Saturday, March 5, 2005

Barb's treadmill was delivered yesterday.  They put it together so Dale didn't have that job.  It is a big one with parts to use the arms as well as walking.  It has a button you can press & it goes uphill like you're walking up a hill.  Tells how many calories you burn while walking. Barb loves it.  She is starting easy -- 1/2 hr. at a time.

Golf is so interesting.  At the final Sun. Mickelson will have Tiger as a partner.  Phil is -20, and Tiger is -19.  What a set up.  It will be interesting.

Alice Nasman (Wayne & Rick's mom) called me today to tell me she won't be in church tomorrow.  She hasn't been feeling well all week -- 24 hr. flu only it's longer.  She was watching golf & so was I.  Both of us root for Tiger.  Betty Casey isn't back to church either. Best to stay in with our winter months.  She's feeling better, tho.

With the commercials on TV today, my thumb gets a good workout muting them out.  And they are so long now.

Dale worked til noon today so I started baking early.  It was the week to make the coffee cake & then I planned to make a pie.  Pumpkin as it's so easy to do.  Then I decided to ask Dale what he'd like.  He said we've had pump. pie lately so how about apple.  So I made an apple pie.  It is tasty.

Dale did his income tax this aft.  Next Wed. Larry will do my state tax.  There are 4 more soccer sessions & then it will be back to Thurs. when they come.  Now Thurs seems like an extra day.

Frank, across the St, has a new agency trying to sell his house.  Hope it goes better this time.  It is probably priced too high.

Golf was exciting & Tiger won.  Then I switched & watched the final laps of  Busch car racing in Mexico City.  One of D.E.I. (Dale Earnhardt Inc.) cars won the race.

Our pastor announced today that she is expecting a baby.  She is very happy -- they were even thinking of adoption.  No need now.

Barb wasn't feeling good today -- headache. She is better tonite.

Mon. Mar. 7

This aft. I watched the Cubs vs. Texas & the Cubs won.  It was a good game.  Ruck Sutcliffe (apt to be wordy) & Gary Thorne announced the game.  Gary is a great announcers & today I didn't have to mute it.  Can't remember the 3rd man, but when Mike Piazza was an L.A. catcher Mike & this fellow were friends & had an apt. together.  I didn't realize this one was retired.  He was traded last year or so -- maybe to the Cubs but don't quote me.  I really don't' like the 3 man team.  Too many to "spout" off.  They trip over their tongues trying to beat the others in showing off how much they think they know.  The name above is Eric Karros.   Just saw it on TV.  Tues aft & I'm watching the Giants vs. Texas & the same announcers.

It's 12 outside.  And what's for supper.  Hamburgers & potato salad.  Sounds like a summertime meal.  But I didn't feel like macaroni & cheese & pot. salad sounded good to me.  We just got a dusting of snow.

Buffalo is having a terrible time with finances.  The 5 pm news keeps us informed.  I like the announcers so I watched WGRZ -- NBC in Buff.

Thurs. the 10th of Mar.

Your letter with "The Bookworm" arrived today & I noticed it was mailed Mar. 2.  Wonder why it took so long to arrive.

Last nite Kim told us about an incident at school.  A 9th grade girl was caught stealing.   They suspected her but couldn't prove it so they set up a camera & caught her.  Then the girl's locker room was next.  Rolls of toilet paper in the toilet & paper towels in the sink.  It happened twice.  So Kim spoke to the girls in that class & informed them from now on there would be an aid to watch them in the locker room.  And Kim said I know who is responsible & the girl looked at Kim & mouthed "bitch".  Kim took her to the office.  If she does this in 9th grade, what will happen when she is in 12th grade.  Maybe she won't make it.  She was suspended 5 days for the theft.  People are afraid of the family -- afraid of revenge.  T hat's what teachers put up with in Sheffield.

Kim & Larry got a new treadmills awhile ago.  Kim runs on it but Lar walks.  You can't run on Barb's.

I'm watching a program on Jay Leno's car collection.   They are redoing a 1966 Toronado  to make it over -- make it elite.  It's interesting.  He doesn't have children -- old cars are his babies & he has quite a collection.  At times there are old cars up for bid & it's amazing how expensive they can be.  Fun to watch.

Barb was glad to hear her camera is ready.  She wants to know how much she owes you, including postage.

Glad you're back to normal.  Have you caught up on your work.

I like the picture illustrations in your letters.

Glad you're feeling good again & that no one else was sick.  Nice you kept your germs to yourself!!!

One nite Dale said his throat was sore but nothing developed.  We were glad.

This is the weekend NASCAR returns to racing & we have been watching Speed Channel & races.  The big race is tomorrow from Fla.  If you are a real fan & have the money that is the place to be this weekend.  Daytona Beach.

Think I've mentioned this before what I learned from the Food Channel.  Marinate chicken with balsamic vinegar, onions & garlic, only I omit the garlic.  It is absolutely Dale's favorite way to do chicken.  They pan fried the chicken, but I baked it.  We had that tonite with Uncle Ben's rice, another of Dale's favorite.  And broccoli & fruit salad.  An easy & fast meal to prepare.  Make peanut butter bars for dessert.  Another easy recipe.  Similar to choc. chop cookies.

Barb has to go to the liquor store almost every week for Bert.  Barb hopes they don't think she uses all of it.  Barb thinks Bert should cut down on alcohol.  She is 87, in poor health, her friends have died or are in nursing homes so I say let her have her comforting drink.  She doesn't get out that much anymore.

Sun. Feb 21

We're watching the racing -- it is exciting to watch.  I forgot to mention when I had my hair done, I said to Sheila racing starts Sun.  Sue's customer said "Marion do you like racing?" Sheila answered for me.  "She is a big face fan."  I said I have to be as that is the main sport for Dale so I have to understand it.  I do enjoy it but it takes a back seat if baseball happens to be on at the same time.

I don't know if you remember the Nicholson's.  They lived on East St. next to the funeral home.  There were 2 sisters & 3 brothers.  One was a lawyer who was a good one but ides young.  None ever married.  They all have died & the last one died rectally.  They were ever active in the church but open to it.  They left over a 2 million estate.  The church will get the interest of 20% of the estate but it will probably take up to 2 y ears to settle (the estate). Pretty nice.  I know Dad used to call on the sisters who died first.

Barb & I finally finished the puzzle.  I'll put the card table away for awhile.

We won't go to Jamestown tomorrow -- the weather won't be that nice, sleet & rain.  I'd rather wait for nicer weather.

We like our new organist.  He plays very well & is getting acquainted with the liturgy.  He makes the organ sound very good.  He will lead the choir.

Tues pm the 22nd

This A>M. I went to Bible Study at church followed by pot luck lunch.  I made my tools to bring.  One thing that is never left over.  The pastor took 3 rolls home the last time I bro't them.  Her husband ate all three of them. He said "who made those rolls, I want to marry her."  Today I gave her the left over rolls so her husband should be happy.

Barb took the laptop computer to Lynn's so Lynn could help her get started -- how to use it.

You know what I remember about Janesville.  We spent our first nite as man & wife in a hotel there.  Our wedding was at 8 pm; after the reception we drove with Min & Lila & family to Beloit & then we took their car & drove to Janesville.  It was a terrible night.  Jan 26 & it was foggy & you couldn't see anything & it took a long time to get there.  We spent Sat. night with Min & Lila.  Dr. Benander asked Dad to preach at Salem that Sun & he did.  The first of the week we left for Auburn via train.   We got to Auburn in the morning & went from the train to the Strands for breakfast.  They are the ones that let you, Paul, open the cupboard doors & play with the pots & pans.

We've been watching reruns of Seinfeld & they are so crazy.  The other nite I was surfing the TV & came upon "Beverly Hills Cop 2". It was so crazy & I laughed so hard. Dale came downstairs to see what I was watching.  And today Perry Mason was in color.  Barb tho't that was the only one in color -- the first series.

That was really nice to be invited to consider applying for the job in Janesville.  But I can understand you not wanting to move because of the boys & the feeling you still have something to give at Middleton.  I guess that is why we continued to stay in Warren. It sure looks like a nice modern building.

I hope you're over the flu by now.  I had an extra Valentine so I sent it to my friend Shirley in Auburn.  She's the one whose husband died last Nov.  Heard from her today. The card arrived when she was getting over a bad case of the flu that left her very weak.

I don't know if you remem -- I've already covered that subject.  Nicholsons.

Our organist is 32 years old & last fall he had a triple bypass operation.  He was at church this A.M. When we were eating lunch the phone rang & it was his wife.  When he returned home he collapsed & was driving himself to Warren hosp.  He lives in Jamestown but didn't want to go to the Jamestown hosp.  We hope all things will be OK for him as organists are hard to come by.  His wife is only 22 yrs. old.  They have 3 children, the oldest is 6.  She was young when she had the 1st one.  T hey are a nice couple.

Wed. the 23.  I made the apple dessert from Bon Appetit (however you spell it) and it is good.  I had to sample it.  It has a think graham cracker base & that adds to the taste.

Gen called this noontime.  She tho't she was calling Millie.  We visited a bit.  Called Betty Casey -- she had a slight stroke & is doing better.  Hope to get to church soon.

Love to all.  Marion, better make it Mom.

Sunday, June 13, 2004

I went to church this A.M. & had a coughing spell during the sermon.  Nothing helped, but I finally stopped.  We have had some leaking around the steeple so we had a meeting after services.  Before the vote, the leak was explained as well as what needs to be done.  They will take the steeple off, fix around the area, & put the steeple back on a cushion of some sort.  They also said some thought we shouldn't put the steeple back & the floor was opened for comments.  I said we need the steeple or it will look like a motel.  (Someone once wondered if it was a motel.)  It will be fixed & the steeple put back on.  I don't usually speak up, but to look complete, the steeple is needed.

Warren's graduation was bad.  Some years ago, they bro't beach balls to outside graduation. Now they added a blown-up penis (a nurse popped it) & water filled balloons. Some parents encouraged it.  One of Kim's friends, a teacher at Warren, refuses to go to graduation.  It's a farce.  The parents don't even dress up.  After graduation, Sheila cut one kids hair.  She said to him, "You guys didn't act very nice at graduation" -- he said don't include me in "you guys".  So not all kids like that kind of humor.

Sheffield's principal is transferred to Youngsville.  Kim didn't always see eye to eye with him, but she hates to see him go.  He put into practice orders from Central office & they (others) don't always do that.  They refuse to.

As usual, I'm watching the Mets vs. Royals.  Mets 3-0.  I'm holding my breath to see if they can be ahead in the 9th.  They need to win at least 1 game!!!!

Kim plays golf every Tues. A.M.  A woman's league (Blueberry) & Kim made 46 for 9 holes. She was pleased.  Kim had low net of 31, whatever that means.  I know par, birdie, & eagle & that's about all.  She was pleased.  If the Mets weren't on TV, I'd be watching golf.

This year Barb planted lettuce in pots.  Last year the in ground lettuce was bitter.  She likes it better in pots & tastes better.

They said Art Howe shouted at the Mets after their bad plays.  I can't imagine him shouting -- he seems like a gentle man.  I think it's paying off -- now it's 5-0.

Dale got his muffler in his car after work yesterday.  He noticed he needs a new tail pipe -- was disgusted with himself for not noticing it as then he could have put a new one on at the same time.

We went to Jamestown but didn't find anything special  We had a fish dinner at Davidson's. Barb did find a birthday gift for Kim.  And we got groceries at Wegman's.

Tues A.M. the 14th of June

Yesterday the pastor called & wondered if I'd serve on the stewardship committee.  I told her I was 83 & didn't care to.  She couldn't believe I'm 83.  Also I had a coughing spell on Sun. but I hated to miss church.  I'm still coughing but I hope it's better by Sun. next.

Thanks for the pictures of your beautiful yard. That's a really big tree.  Yardwork is a good hobby.  I can see that Ed is really changing.  Hearts will get broken by your sons! Handsome guys!

Did you get the sports jacket you had your eye on?

Wed. the 16th

Barb will start kemo the 28th of June.  They wanted her to start June 21, but she wanted another week.  It's not something  person looks forward to.

One Sun. Lar, Kim & Betsy M & her husband, in their Miatas, went on a little ride to Salamanca, N.Y. &^went to the Indian Casino there.  They tired the slots but no big winners.

Thurs. the 17th

Made a strawberry pie & it looks delicious.  We're having chicken & biscuits.  Homemade biscuits.  And lettuce salad from the garden.

Just wrote a note to Ruth.

The hosp. called.  Barb had to be there at 7 A.M.  Around 10 the hosp. called.  They injected a dye & it takes time so she would soon be going to be operated on.  So maybe she's there now.  Kemo next.  Hope it all works out.

Cold is gone, but I'm still coughing.  SOon it will be over.  Otherwise all is fine here.

At 5:30, the hosp. called & said Barb wasn't able to come home yet.  The anesthesia & pain pills don't agree with Barb.  At 8:15 Barb called & said she wanted to come home.  Kim picked her up & Barb said she told them she felt better, but to Kim she said I don't really. Under her chin, she has a bandage patch.  I think she'll fell better in her own bed.  This reaction was worse this time than last operation.

Fri.  Barb is feeling better.

Sunday, December 14, 2003

Yesterday Patty. W. Phillips called to ask if I'd like to go to our pastor's open house in Sheffield.  I said yes -- she also picked up Marie Mathis & Betty Casey.  The roads were fine & we enjoyed the visit.

Today we have between 4-6" of snow as it has snowed all day as of 3:50 p.m.

Last nite was Shults Christmas party at the Country Club.  Dale didn't stay for the dancing & drinking.  He said the parts mgr. was already feeling good.  He wasn't impressed with the food.  They had prime rib & the meat was OK.  He likes Jackson Valley better.

Yesterday I finally finished shopping for Kim.  They got a new dining room set & this table is rectangular so I got a table cloth to fit it -- on sale plus discount6 & the glassware was on sale plus coupon & I got a relish dish.  One side is divided into 3 parts & the other is plain.  I like it a lot so I hope Kim will.  Larry likes a gift certificate from Lawn &^ Garden & he can get what he wants.  Kim says Lar is shopping there a lot.  Did I mention he wanted a slim TV &^ bot one.  It is by the computer so he can "compute" & watch TV at the same time.

We have a new artificial tree at church & it is beautiful.  Tall & full.  courtesy of Ron & Marilyn Thelin Passenger.  It is on the left side by the piano.  Next Sun. the children's program will be at 6 pm followed by a reception -- cookies & punch.  Coffee as well as no coffee in a Luth church wouldn't be acceptable.

I took chicken from the freezer for dinner & asked Dale how I should fix it.  Chicken & spaghetti was the answer.  We both like it that way.  Barb is making herself a salad, a big one.  She doesn't always want what I serve so she makes her own.

Soon you'll have another teenager.  How time flies.  And it does -- I can't believe I have to bring Sheila's money gift this coming Fri.  And I have to make cookies.  Some for Sheila & Sue, the other gal & I think I'll bring some to Viola Seaquist. She doesn't get to church in this winter weather & she might appreciate some.  It's good her one grandson came back from Calif. as he lives with her & makes meals, etc.  Brian Scarpo.  Barb makes up a tray for Johannsons.

Nice Rachel will have another child.  Have you noticed many times only children want more than one child.

I still haven't decided what to have Christmas Eve.  My books & magazines haven't given me any ideas.

Wed. the 10th

I had to be sure there would be enough Danish for Christmas breakfast so I started a batch & baked them this A.M.  Last Sat I didn't get to bake so Dale's A.M. treat is Danish from the freezer.  I've started  baking cookies but a couple of batches I like to make just before Christmas.  I've made Spritz & Russian Tcakes, a cookie that has several names.  I got my recipe from Stella.

Weather report -- more snow today & tomorrow & snow flurries on Fri.  Let it snow, let it snow...

Just have a couple of gifts left to wrap.

Yesterday I got Cornish hens for Christmas Eve.  Have til Mon. to decide what to have for Christmas Day.  I'd have lamb but Barb & Kim wouldn't be happy.

Better get on with my "schedule" -- just took a little rest period.

Later -- Quality had tilapia froz. fish -- buy 1 get 1 free.  That's what we had for sup per -- pan fried for about 5 min. with lemon juice.  Delicious & it doesn't smell up the house & it is one fish Dale likes.  Baked pot, gr. beans.

And Barb & I decided to have a shrimp cocktail, steak, baked pot., salad for Christmas Eve. Christmas Day we'll have Cornish hens, herbed rice, veggie, relish tray & I might try a recipe I saw Egg Nog pie. Maybe cookies & a pudding Christmas Eve.

Thurs A.M.  I used a plastic sled to take the garbage to the curb.  We must have 6" of snow. Then I swept the snow from the font steps & made a path for the mailman.  Before that I made a banana cream pie (made the shell yesterday) & started dinner rolls.

Sunday, November 16, 2003

Watching the Bills play football is pure agony.  They can't win.

Dale is on his way to Pittsburgh to go to school tomorrow.  He wasn't very happy to leave as this is the last day of Nascar racing & he hated to miss it.  As soon as I got home from church I started dinner, so he had a meal under his belt.

Barb had an enjoyable time in Erie & got some good bargains on 3 tops & 2 sweaters.  She bo't me a Franklin spelling help for my crossword puzzles, only it won't work.  She was trying to see if Kim or Lynn were going to Erie -- none were.  The Mon. after Thanksgiving there is no school & Bert w ill be in NYC, so I suggested we could return it then & also go to Marshalls which is by Target.  So maybe that would work out.  We wouldn't have to go to the Mall.  Hope it is a nice day to drive.

I finally finished my puzzle I had for the last 2 weeks.  And no missing pieces.

Glad to hear that Ed is doing well in his studies -- with a little improvement he could make the honor roll.  The next letter will tell of Andy's marks.  I can't remember if you had anything to take away when you didn't make the honor roll!!  But you "made it" regardless -- in life that is.

It is exciting when things start to show what the library will be like when it is complete.  I remember how it was with the new church.

We really like our pastor.  Her sermons are well prepared & very interesting.  Usually the Sun. after Christmas has been a united Luth. service at First Luth.  This A.M. the pastor said we would have our own service & that made me very happy.  I don't think our church should ever be closed on a Sun.  Others must believe that as well.

We had quite a snow storm on Thurs (the 13th) but it was gone by Sat.  We didn't shovel but I did sweep off the steps for the mail man.  It was pretty but too soon for me.  Sat the roads were fine for Barb to go to Erie.

Mon. Nov 17

Dale got home about 8:20 p.m.  He said he could have been home earlier but when he should turn off he was in the wrong lane & couldn't get in the right one because of the traffic. So he went 15 mi. before he could turn around.  He said the class was very interesting. They give a test first & one after the class. He didn't know any answers as it was a new subject for him.  Afterwards he got all the correct answers.  You have to get at least 70% to pass the course.  Dale does well on all the tests.

Tues the 18th

Wrote to Millie & Gen.  Forgot to get Thanksgiving cards to send except for Andy & Ed.

Remember I told you Dale got stocks in Northwest Savings   He already got a $30.00 payment in interest.  He said he'll tell them to put the interest back into the stocks.  I should have some.  Lar said he planned to invest but I never asked if he followed thru.  They sold out in short time.

Watching the weather channel & it looks like a storm is coming East next week.  Just in time for Thanksgiving travel.

I'm in my chair watching TV.  I could hear Dale working around in the kitchen.  He gave the sink a good cleaning & cleaned the side of the stove & the front of the dishwasher & trash compactor.  He couldn't stand it any longer-- the smudges, etc.  I don't take it as an insult because I know I don't keep house as well as I used to & it doesn't bother me.  I just say "thank you" & am glad he likes to clean.  How did he get to be such a perfectionist.  Being the youngest he wasn't required to do as much to help as the rest of you.

Thurs.  We had 1 1/2" of rain yesterday & that meant a little water in the basement which Dale took care of.

Re: article in Erie paper.  They plan, as of last nite's news, to keep the branch lib. opened but will lay off help & shortened the hours.  Pa. still doesn't have a budget & the schools have borrowed money to keep the schools opened.  But how long will that happen.  The gov. wants less money for the schools & other things & the legislature won't agree & neither will back down.  And borrowing money costs money & who pays for that because they can't come to terms.  Maybe we need a recall here!!!!

Sunday, October 19, 2003

I just finished the last of the choc. cake & I want to start a letter before I start the dishwasher.

Don't think I wrote this but I found a recipe for apple bread, made it & it is very good. fBoth Barb & Dale like it.

Today Barb & I got 2 boxes ready to send to you, Paul.  We'll mail them tomorrow.  I figure you'll want y our birthday celebration early, since you'll be in Milwaukee on the 29th.

Our pastor had her first service today & all went well, except there are too many empty pews.  I hope people will be curious enough to come & hear Pastor Beth.  Her first funeral yesterday for H. Ford.  We also had left over turkey today.  I put stuffing in a dish, layered turkey over it & gravy over all.  Heat it in the oven.  Dale will eat leftovers that way & of course in a sandwich.

I was so happy last nite when the Marlins won the first game.  I watched it in bed (the last inning) & it was nail biting.  The closer for the Marlins was so slow.  Barb says it should have been the Cubs vs. Boston if the mgr. had taken the pitchers out when they started to falter, or tire.  I agree.

Fri. Barb & I got flu shots at Crone's.  Just a little prick & no after effects.

Mon. the 20th

Last Sat. nite Dale went to a wedding at the Eagle's Club.  The mgr. of the Parts Dept. & a car saleswoman got married.  He is 30 & she is around Dale's age with a grown family.  They met when she started working at Shult's.  He enjoyed himself (Dale).  Buffet dinner.  They were downstairs & later Dale went upstairs for the music.  Finally the loud music got to Dale & he came home some time after 10 pm.  When he was getting ready he didn't know what to wear to be more dressed up.  I told him he should spend some of his money & get a sports jacket.  He did get a good pair of work boots at Valone's.  Close to $150.00  He just came back from shopping at KMart.  He bot'a pair of loafers to wear around the house.  Tom McCann &U only 29.00.  Be more like a slipper.

I got my summer clothes put away in thte attic this aft.  Took down some winter things. Haven't gotten to my closet.  Some of them I'll give to Goodwill (a place outside the Mall in the area of Shults).  Salvation Army closed their store.  I'll never be small enough to wear some of my slacks & it's no use having them around.

Tues. pm Oct 21

Called Gen as I hadn't heard from her for awhile.  John's hot water tank leaked so John had to get a new one.  She sounded good.

Today (aft) we went to the Mall -- KMart, then to Quality for groceries, & to CVS for medication.  Barb said I should go to KMart pharmacy but I like CVS & it isn't that many extra minutes to go there.  We weren't gone more than a hour anyway.

I did quite a bit of work yesterday so I took it easy after I spent an hour ironing a shirt for Dale & the clothes of mine.  I washed yesterday. I have 3 sizes of slacks -- 12 - 14 - 16. Now I'm wearing size 14.

I have a suggestion & it should save a little money after finding out how much postage is.  I wouldn't mind a Penney's gift certificate.  I could use it for towels or a set of sheets or if I see something personal, I could get that.  I'm sending cash except for little gifts to open. At their ages I'm sure the boys enjoy money so they can get what they want.

Thurs Oct 23

Today I used a new idea (cookbook) for a sandwich.  I sauteed green pepper & onion til soft. When Dale got home, I added eggs & milk & made scrambled eggs   I didn't have the correct bread it called for so I used rolls.  Put cheese on the rolls, melted it in the toaster oven & then added the eggs.  Dale liked it & so did I. Nice to have something different. Have a couple of other ideas.

Tonite we're having stuffed pork chops, apple sauce, corn pudding & pot. & apple pie for dessert.

Saturday, October 11, 2003

Thanks so much for the pictures about Andy's group & the dance.  It was so much fun to study them & I'm glad you put names down.  Andy & his date make a nice couple.  Has Andy ever changed!  He's a big one -- football hero!

I'm watching the Yankees at Boston.  They had a "big rhubarb" & Zimmer runs out on the field & Pedro M. pushes him down.  He should know better & stay sitting on the bench. He is 72.

The ordination service was very impressive.  About a dozen pastors -- Jim S. & Diane were there & I got to talk to them.  Diane looks good & so does Jim.  He is getting quite gray. The Episcopalian Bishop assisted as well as Pastor Beth's husband.  They are both very nice.  About a dozen pastors, 3 of them women & 2 assisted in the service.  Of course the Bishop of our Synod presided.  During communion you could drink the wine from the cup or have intinction, which I did.  Kept the bread in my hand, held it out to the wind giver & she dipped it in the wine & put it in my mouth.  All very new for our people. I'm sure new methods will be introduced when we have a young pastor & I'm sure she has a lot of ideas.  Just hope she will take them gradually.

Barb wants to know if you or JoAnna have read David McCullough's John Adams?  It is Bert's book & she lent it to Barb & Barb is enjoying it a lot.

Late Fri. aft. Dale started digging by the side of the garage facing the house. He wants to put the TV cable in so when he works in the garage he can watch TV or as in the summer when he is suntanning he can hear it.  He got the cable in, working at it all day, but has to get it connected now.

Fri. we went up to the Mall & I got a new bathrobe, nightie & girdle.  I really need a new dress but I can't find anything suitable.  The styles seem to be very different this season -- nothing for an old lady.  And I don't like to order from the catalog.

Barb took the picture (Andy's) to show Marisa & Scott.  And I plan to show them to Sheila. They have a 3rd girl working with them now.

I finished my pumpkin puzzle & have the new one set to start.  I haven't put this one together before.

Got the Nov. Bon Appetit & the Pumpkin Cheesecake with gingersnap crust sounds interesting.  I'll copy it down.  Also a lemon pie.

Sun A.M. before church.

Bet there was a lot of celebrating last nite when Wisc. beat OSU.  Watched the end of the first half when I realized the Cubs would win.  One more win & they are in the World Series. Can you believe it?  Bet Roland is happy.  They say once a Cub fan, always a Cub fan.

Mon. the 13th

Larry bro't over his rototiller for Barb to use on the garden.  She added lime & leaves to the soil to enrich it thru the winter.  Our leaves haven't started to fall so she got 3 bags full at Johanson's.

We get our favorite cheese at BiLo's & we're down to the last pkg.  So when we shopped at Quality I got some cheddar cheese, not realizing it was extra strong.  Barb suggested I make a cheese sauce for broccoli and it was very tasty.  Didn't have too strong a flavor.

I ordered a blouse from the Penney's catalog but it won't be available until Nov. 1st.  Hope they won't be out of it.  Guess I waited too long.

Barb finished the sweater she made for me & she is anxious to start one for herself.  She doesn't like to shop at Walmart's but she stopped there last Fri & found yarn she liked.

I got our library newsletter today & I'll send it to you.  It tells how the library got started & it is very interesting.

Tues A.M.

What do you hear from Mardi P?  Can't remember her married name.  Wonder if they still like the Seattle area.

Remember I wrote about Mac Young who was killed in an accident.  Sons Craig & Robert. Well Mary Young has met a nice man -- she is so nice & always looks so good.  I'm glad for her -- Mac did everything for her & she was really lost for awhile.  Mary works for lawyer Mark Ristau.

Every Tues. A.M. a group of ladies meet at church to quilt (one is given to a baby at baptism), to knit lap robes and such.  Barb started a sweater & didn't like the yarn, so she ripped it & I bro't the yarn to church this A.M. as they can reuse the yarn.  Irma Thelin was there & she said Robert preached in Ridgway last Sun. & wore Dad's cross for the first time. Irma still mentioned how pleased Roger is to wear Dad's cassock & cross.  It was such an easy thing & appreciated so much.

Have dinner rolls set to go in the oven in a few minutes.  Also set Danish which I'll finish tomorrow A.M.

Heard from Millie today & she is happy as next spring she hopes to move into a retirement home in Falmouth, Ma.  She is 6th on the list.  Larry bot a 2nd home there so at times she will see them & she will be close to Linda.  Gen isn't very happy to hear this news.  The place is on 7 1/2 acres & they plan a lot of things -- going to Boston, concerts  etc.  She can walk to a church, library, bank, grocery store.  The only extra will be telephone & cable. She's already talked to a real estate salesman.  She's really excited about this & glad to give up her house & all that owning involves   I'm happy for her.  Where she is, is on a slant & she has to walk to get her mail or paper.  It's not that far but with ice & snow in the winter, then it is difficult.  She says now I'm going to have a life.  Millie loves people & gets along with people very well.

Oct 15th - I'm 83 years old.  Imagine that.

I found a recipe for apple bread.  It came out good & both Dale & Barb liked it.

Lar called yesterday & asked if I'd like to go out to eat on my birthday so we're going to Chiodo's at 6:30 p.m.  This A.M. I baked my Danish.  When I put the garbage in the garage, the new neighbor was raking leaves so I went over & spoke to her.  When I got back in the house I saw the rolls sitting there, so I went back out & gave her 8 rolls as a welcome to the neighborhood.  Dale took one for an aft. snack & Barb took one for Scott & one for her so I had about 8 left.  Naturally I sampled 2!

Thanks for the cards.  I can't recall what I mentioned wanting for Christmas.  But I'll be on the lookout for a pkg.

I just didn't feel good & my legs just gave away.  Some morning I haven't felt up to par but I'm just about back to normal.  I have lost weight as I didn't have much of an appetite, but it's improving.

I also made a choc. cake this A.M.  Had meat out for meatballs & spag. so I fixed the meatballs & they will be ready for Fri. supper.  Baked them in the oven -- easier that way.

Dale hates to drive over the 5th Ave bridge but Barb uses it all the time.

When I mentioned Andy's scowl in the picture, both Lar & Dale said "that's the football player coming out."

I have the same trouble matching navy & black socks even with the over head light on in the laundry area.  Even hard to match black to black.

Thurs. when Lar & Kim come, I plan to have a turkey breast, mashed pot., sweet pot., fruit salad & maybe green beans.  Cake & ice cream for dessert.  My birthday choice.

A piece of the house siding came loose -- the top ones aren't nailed down.  It was Tues & Dale's nite to work til 8 pm so I called Lar & he came over & fixed it.  With the hard winds we were to have I didn't want to put it off.  I'm lucky I can count on my children.

I'm not sure of Roger T's age but he is retired so maybe late 60's.

Thurs the 16th

The interim pastor started weekly communion & it went over well.  Lar & Kim tho't Roger T. must be in his early 70s.  We had a nice dinner last nite.  Your gift came yesterday but I waited to open gifts tonite.  The turkey breast smells good.

We had a good dinner.  I made a choc. cake from scratch & it is really good.  None of it will be thrown away.  Thank you for the sweater -- it fits nicely & I like the color.  A good choice. Thanks so much.  Kim & Lar paid for my dinner last nite & gave me a gift certificate for my hair.  I'll put it toward my next perm.  Kim thoguht the shop was so nice.  Barb gave me a light blue short sleeve pullover sweater.  I'm a lucky Mom.

I'm watching N.Y. vs. Boston & rooting for Boston.  Was surprised this A.M. to find out Fla. won.  I went to bed with the Cubs ahead.

The Mets are playing(?) vs. Montreal.  Barb says they won't win another game -- 9 after today .  They have no offense. (The 22nd.  They beat Pittsburgh last nite 1-0.)

I get a lot of smiles out of your letters when it comes to stories about Andy & Ed.  If you hair hasn't started getting gray, it will, with Andy dating & getting his license next Dec.  More fun.  You know how white my hair is -- from all you kids' antics!  HaHa.  It's the genes.

Yesterday I walked to get my hair done.  Afterwards I started walking home -- came out Liberty St. entrance & onto 3rd.  I started feeling funny & was almost to that bldg. opposite the post office & my leg wouldn't hold me up so down I went.  A mail man came to help me up & sat me on the bldg. steps.  They called 911.  A younger lady stopped her red SUV & stayed with me til the 911 came.  I said I didn't want to go to the hosp.  They asked me who the pres is, the year, the day & I could answer.  After sitting awhile I got up & walked home & I was glad to get here.  Took it easy the rest of the day & should have taken it easier on Thurs. but I didn't.

Guess I'm not the only forgetful one, Paul.  In fact, Barb is soon catching up.  (telephone deal)

When I talked to Andy, I asked him if he was home enough to watch his own TV.  Bet Ed can hardly 'til he's 16.

The new pastor & her husband moved into the Sheffield parsonage today but ours doesn't start 'til Oct. 15th.  They want time to get settled & relatives will be here for her ordination Oct. 11.

Are Tyler & Ross Hellenbrand brothers.  They look alike but differ in height.  Notice that Ross H. is also on the varsity roster.  How many boys are there-- notice 2 more in the freshman roster.  Notice a different last name:  Bonebreak -- sounds like it could be a Amer. Indian name.  A study on names would be interesting.

You have a nice booklet for fundraising.  I can visualize it now.  Andy results yet?

Wed the 24th aft.

Barb & I went to the Mall this A.M.  Many sales at Bon Ton but nothing for me.  It is a beautiful day, on the cool side - & Barb is riding her bike.

Haven't turned the furnace on yet but one of these days I will.  It was 45 this A.M.  Think I'll get my winter nighty out.

I'm sure you've heard about that bank robbery in Erie where the robber was blown up.  It still makes the Erie news broadcast but nothing definite has turned up.  Really weird.

Warren H. called & we're going out to lunch on Fri.  Bensons, Warren & Anna, & me.  At Cable Hollow golf course.  Warren & Anna are home for a week & then off again.

Just called Cable Hollow & they have a banquet on Friday and aren't open to the public.  I got Ted & he suggested Holiday Inn so we'll go there.  Hollertzs weren't home so I'll try later.

What is an X Box game player?  Barb was wondering if she, Dale & I should go together & get you & JoAnna a large gift, or more expensive but if it's too big, it would be hard & expensive to mail.  Think it over.  Otherwise it will be a small gift to open & money for after Christmas sales.  Do you plan to have a Christmas party this year.

I'm watching baseball again.  San Fran is ahead of Houston 1-0.  I'm hoping San Fran gets home field advantage.  We can watch the Mets for 3 nites playing the Pirates as it's on Fox network, Pittsburgh.  Last Sun. was the Mets' last broadcast.

I'm making Swiss steak for supper.  Made plans for the week & had planned on cabbage rolls but forgot to buy cabbage on Tues.  Left my list at home but forgot only a couple of things

Saturday, August 16, 2003

Dale is out in the sun soaking up the rays.  Barb is doing 15 mi. on her bike.  Her tail bone doesn't hurt as much now.

The garage roof is completed & it looks so nice.  2 shades of lite brown.  A big improvement.

This A.M. we went to the Mall.  All summer I've been looking for a summer skirt.  Di find one & I got a large & it is too big in the waist.  Tried taking it in but it didn't look right.  Today at Bon Ton I saw one I liked a lot but it was a small.  Where were they when they had all the sizes -- or should I say where was I.

Thurs nite the Mets were suppose to be on TV & then came the black out  But they are on tonite & tomorrow aft.   They are showing improvement but it's too little to late.

I've also watched golf & Tiger is having a tough time.  Maybe he needs to play more tournaments or maybe it's an off year.

Barb went to Jamestown yesterday.  Got a couple of sleeveless tops for Bert's birthday.  She likes to wear them with a jacket.  They were on sale.  She leaves for NYC on Tues.  Barb will take a week off for vacation & wants to go to Erie.

Larry & Kim enjoyed their 2 days in Erie.  Rode bikes, etc.  And shopped the sales.  Larry got 4 prs. of shoes.  2 for work, sandals, & tennis shoes.

Mon. Dale goes to Erie for a MRI & they want him to be sleepy for the test.  Larry will take a vacation day & drive him.  Mon. nite he & another fellow worker have to go to school for a day.  Mark will drive.  Dale is taking the week of the 24th as vacation.  The Erie Dr. wants all the tests taken there.  Guess the Wrrn Hosp doesn't forward any test results.  He still will have 1 more test to take.

I love your kitchen window.  When we were remodeling, I wanted a similar one but didn't spend the money for it & now I regret it.  It would be so nice for plants & maybe I wouldn't splash on the windows as it would sit out more.  Yours is really nice because it has side windows that open.  You are really improving your home.

It is hard for me to visualize Andy at 6'2" & 205 lbs.  And Eddie will be catching up on Andy as time goes by.  2 handsome sons to be proud of.

I don't remember anything about Seabiscuit.  That was my 1st year in Mpls.

Sun. the 17th

Just had a LONG conversation with Rose S.  Jim & Diane were home yesterday.  I wanted to tell her the outcome of today's meeting at church.  After service we voted to call a pastor with 3 NO'S.  Don Ekey asked why she didn't trial preach at St. Paul but they don't do that anymore.  There is a lot more to the job besides preaching.  She will start in Oct.  That is such a relief to know we'll have a pastor.  Rose's sister Violet is in the hosp.  She has had 3 strokes in addition to Parkinson's so she has been staying with her at Violet's home while Larry works.  (When Violet was home.)  Rose thinks a nursing home will be the next step. Rose isn't that well either.  Finds it hard to walk & doesn't get out much.

The way the Mets are playing currently gives us fans hope for next y ear.  They have some great young players   The pitching needs help. Having Piazza back has given them a lift. They have won 5 in w row.  Imagine that!

It will be a blanket nite tonite & it feels good.  I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Tues. the 19th

Barb & I went to Erie today.  First stop - Target.  I love to go there.  Picked up paper goods -- foil, Saran & they had a large Cascade on sale.  Got some small heath bears which I love with a cup of coffee.  A couple of dish towels, Pepperidge Farm cookies & I guess that is about all.

Then to the Mall.  Nothing at Penney's, got a navy blouse at Kaufmans on sale.  Barb got a medium blue slack outfit.  Then to a gadget store & got a can opener, a pair of tongs & a wooden spoon.  We stopped at Sears & noticed they have Land's End clothes & shoes but we didn't buy anything.  Ate lunch at Red Lobster.  We both had fish.  When we got home Barb noticed a bat upstairs.  She opened the door in the little room & it must have flown out. When Dale came home he couldn't find any evidence of a bat.  The roofers finished the front of the roof & toady they started ripping off the 3 layers of shingles & they must have upset a bat.

Dale & another worker were in Pittsburgh today for a class.  He said it was interesting.

Wed. A.M. the 20th

Barb took me over town & I got stamps & then went to the bank.  I moved $5000.00 from one account to my checking acct. so I can make the final payment on the roof.  When they tried to get me to tie up this money, I said no.  I want to be able to get it easily when needed.  2 yrs. ago some went to pay for the car.  Thanks to Dad's thriftiness the money is there.

It's warming up again & more humidity is expected.  It should be a cold meal on Thurs. but what I don't know.  It's spaghetti & meat balls tonite.  Think I've seen a chicken rice salad that might "fill the bill".

Just talked to Millie for 1/2 hr.  She just got back from visiting Linda at the Cape.  Linda always has things planned for them to do, so she has a good time.

I guess John got the money from the sale of Edith's house.  He also kept the Oriental rugs.

Thurs.  The roof is completed & all like it, color, etc.

Kim starts school on Mon. & the kids start on Wed.  Where did the summer go.
