I'm watching the Mets vs. Orioles & the Mets are finally ahead of the Orioles.  David Wright had a home run emptying all the bases.  I think I heard he's getting a lot of All-Star votes & they wondered if he's a great third baseman.  Maybe not yet, but they say he has a great future.  This was his 3rd grand slam & he has been with the Mets about 2 yrs.  Naturally he is my choice no matter if Andy thinks Chipper is the best!!

Barb & Dale were very unhappy when they were awakened at 3:30 this A.M. by loud & vulgar talk coming from the young couple who bot Collins' house.  Dale yelled "Keep it down" to no avail & Barb yelled "Please don't talk so loud".  I'm sure others were awakened as well.  It was the "f" word this & that.  Marisa, Lynn's daughter says, "Don't look to our generation to save the world."  With all the vulgar language, bad TV, & computer images, she might be right.

You know I get my hair "done" on Fri. & Sat A.M. I put curlers in the top of my hair.  Barb made a comment but Mon. I get a perm & now my hair doesn't stay as well & I wanted it presentable for church.

I sat alone in church today.  It's been very warm & both Alice & Betty have heart problems so they might not have been feeling up to par.

Patty & her new husband sat on the other end of the pew so after church I offered my best wishes on the wedding & met husband Ron.  They are a cute couple & so happy.

Last nite we ate at 5:30 as Barb wanted to ride her bike at 6:30 p.m.  Afterwards Dale said it was really too hot to enjoy the meal.  He came in from sitting in the sun.  So when it is still hot, I sugested a big salad, and he agreed.  Tossed salad with hard-cooked eggs, shrimp plus the usual.  I'm glad he doesn't mind salads & rolls.

The Mets take first place over golf today.  I check to see what is happening during the commercials.  Next weekend the Mets are at Toronto & that should be interesting.  I like interleague play.

Yesterday I watched Washington beat the Yankees & the Yanks had been leading by 7 runs.  It was their closer, used for 5 outs.  A swift runner stealing 2 bases & coming in on a bad throw by Mariano.  They really rattled him & Wash. won the game!

June 21.

When I got my perm I told Sheila about the loud noise early Sun A.M.  A young couple, planning to be married in July, bot Collins' house & moved in.  The guy had a motorcycle accident & after that Sheila heard the wedding was off.  Sheila said he is another one of those bad boys girls seem to be attracted to.  The gal is a Dr. daughter & goes to college.  It seems like she should have better sense & maybe she began to realize she's been wrong.  Her family lives across the st. from Lynn & they have been doing a lot of work around the house.  Maybe they were going to have the reception there.

Barb rode her bike this A.M.  Now she is picking strawberries & will also pick up a few groceries for me.

Kim's birthday is today.  We celebrate it tomorrow.

Yesterday A.M. I watched "Pillow Talk" & it is such a cute movie.  Good they aren't that long.  In the aft. I watched "Casablanca", a completely different movie.  Enjoyed it.

Will Atlanta Braves ever win a game?  I'm beginning to feel sorry for them -- they must be feeling terrible.  Gone from top to bottom.  But I'm still happy the Mets are on top!

This coming Sat. the Warren Hospital Auxiliary has their yearly money making event.  Lar & Kim go with another couple.  For the last couple of years it has been at Bett's Park.  They have a large tent, tables to sit at, food & band.  $50.00 a couple & they always have a good time.  No jeans allowed -- I thought people would realize that would be unacceptable, but they had to add that.  Sports jacket for men.  Kim wears a long skirt -- more semi-format outside.  Think it said they plan for a large turnout.

Wednesday, May 24, 2006

Yolanda, Mardi's mom, called today.  She heard from Mardi & wondered how you are doing.  I told her everything was fine -- she sends you her best wishes.

Dale was home at 5:30, early for him -- he loves his job so much.  Ha, ha!  After a little rest and is now cleaning his car. In the summer he doesn't want to eat til 8 pm.  So his dinner is in the fridge.  I was eating when he came home.  Barb went to Wegman's, after she was through with Scott.   She will take care of her meal, most likely a salad.  Dale will eat at 6 pm on Thurs. when Lar & Kim come.

We will have beautiful weather for Memorial Day weekend.  Finally it is warming up.  I can put a lighter blanket on my bed.  I've been using my elec. blanket thru the first part of May Y&^ the furnace has been coming on.  Now no more for awhile, I hope.

Buffalo is one happy city because of their hockey team.  For people who can't get or afford tickets, they can watch the game in a big screen set up in one of the parks.  It will be a nice night to be outside.  They are charging 2.00 & the money goes to a charity, mostly likely a soup kitchen.

For 2 nites Barb took the flowering plants inside because we might have a freeze.  We didn't but she didn't ant to take a chance.

I'm enclosing 2 coupons you should be able to use.

I don't remember much about Mother's Day.  A couple stand out.  Once Dale gave me a miniature loving cup saying "World's Best Mother".  I still have it.  I think he got it for me because Jeff Y. was getting one for Sylvia.  Next was when you all were gone & Dad gave me a pretty silver necklace.  I mentioned I liked it but never tho't he'd get it for me, so I was surprised.

One of my favorite meals is meat balls or loaf, scalloped potatoes & green beans.  Dale also likes it.  He is pretty good to like most of my meals.  Once in awhile there are "duds", esp. if I try a new recipe.  Then I throw that recipe away -- it won't get used again.

The obit in today's paper listed Joanne Scordo, but didn't have a full obit.  I'm sure she was the phy ed teacher's wife.  You remember Mr. Scordo.

Had my teeth cleaned yesterday.  My dentist wasn't in so the gal checked my teeth & didn't see anything or such.  Dr. Walters is my dentist.

I almost forgot -- Last week's subway series in NYC.  The Mets took 2 out of 3 & should have won all 3.  It was exciting.  Sun. nite I stayed up way past my bedtime.  I had to see if the Mets could hold their lead & they did.

Mon. Nite I watched N.Y. Yankees at Boston on ESPN & tonite is the 3rd game in the series on ESPN.  It seems like ESPN is the Yankees' personal TV station.  They seem to be shown all the time.  Maybe I'm just jealous.  I don't see the Mets that often.  I root for Boston.  Big surprise!!

Yesterday I called Larry & wished them a Happy Anniv. & said they'd get their card on Thurs. when they are here.  Torey is showing his age -- doesn't like to walk much anymore.

Dale said starting in Aug, their checks from work will be direct deposit into their banks.  Some guys aren't happy with the move but I guess it is easier in the office.  It doesn't bother Dale.  He doesn't need his paycheck like married guys do.  Some guys, when they get their pay, spend the nite in the bars getting drunk.  I'd hate that if I were the wife.

We'll have some good meals over the holidays but not much going o.  Barb will ride her bike, & most likely Dale will start his sun tanning.

Patty Welsh Phillips gets married this coming Sat.  2pm at church.  I'm very happy for her -- he seems like a nice fellow.  Comes to church with her & works in the same office she does.  He must be divorced as he has a son.

John Wertz, a classmate of Barb's shot himself in front of his wife.  They lived next door to Betty Casey on Dartmouth St.  She said that caused a lot of excitement on her street.  Tough on the wife.

Fri A.M. the 26th

Just home from getting my hair done.  Hollertzs have to come to Wrrn, so they'll pick me up for lunch.  Later Barb & I will to go the Mall.

This is your busy weekend. Kim is busy also, hosts a bridal show3er for a friend's daughter on Sat.  Sun she is up early to play golf -- benefit the new bldg. for stray animals, etc.

Sunday, November 20, 2005

Some good news to start this letter.  Patty Welsh Phillips is engaged.  I haven't met him but he is in church with her every Sun. U& he seems like a nice fellow.  I'm happy for Patty.

This is Frank's last day at the former Dunham home.  They sign papers tomorrow.  It went for $110,000.  They had to come down according to Gustafson's up the st.  So there will be little children on our block again.

I'm watching Pittsburgh lose to Baltimore & it is not a happy situation.

Barb & Dale went across the st. yesterday aft. to say goodby to Frank.  He said to Barb "Don't wash all the paint off the car" -- she was washing the van.  Bad weather is expected the middle of the week, so Dale has the Monte Carlo ready to put away for the winter & has taken the Blazer out.  He thinks we should get new tires for the van for winter driving -- he will look into it.

Nancy Bloom Davis is now a grandmother.  The oldest, a daughter Amy had a baby girl. Nancy went for a week to be with her in N. Carolina.  First grandchild for both sides of the couple.  So Irene Bloom is a great grandma.

Had a card from Millie.  She & Linda will go to Allan's for Thanksgiving & hope to see Gen sometime during the weekend.

Yesterday Larry called & said Kim will make 2 pies for Thanksgiving.  I used to order pecans from Texas & they always send info on prices, etc.  They had a recipe for Caramel Pecan Pie that sounds delicious.  You use brown sugar & milk, 1/2 c. B. sugar til it bubbles.  Then make a cream filling using 1/2 c. B sugar, milk, cornstarch, etc.  After it thickens you add egg yolks, & the melted B. sugar.  Meringue on top.  Sound luscious but sweet.  Maybe I'll try it.  You also add coarsely chopped pecans.  It said after the dessert your guests will be so sated & tired they'll heard for the nearest bed & leave you in peace!

Barb has all but 1 of her gifts wrapped.  I started wrapping yesterday.  We'll get the pkg. out in time for JoAnna's birthday.  By UPS.

My faith is restored -- Pitts. just tied the score 13-13.  5 min. left to play.  Other 2 QB injured & Maddox hasn't played that much.

Thanksgiving Day

We'll eat at 5 pm & the turkey smells so good.  All is ready or just about.  Green bean casserole & mashed sweet pots. ready to go into the oven -- about 4:15.  I made broth using turkey gravy broth wings.  Where is my mind -- on TV football game -- & have gravy made. Might add a few pan drippings to it.  Have to peel pot, etc. & finish the fruit salad by adding apples & bananas.  When we eat late it 's not so much of a rush.

We've had snow -- enough for Dale to shovel.  When I got up this A.M., the Weather Channel said 30 for Jamestown.  Now it's in the low 20's.  The snow has stopped but more is predicted.

Paul you'll have to get your scarf yourself.  We looked in Warren & Jtown & no light colors. All dark colors & not too many of them.

I miss not making a pumpkin pie but I'll make one for the weekend.

Poor Detroit they can't catch a pass.

The Mets got Carlos Delgado & lost an up & coming 1st baseman in the trade.  Wonder if they'll get the Boston outfielder -- the one with the big ego.

Finally there was an obit for Max & it was a very nice one.  She was well liked & loved & will be missed.  She didn't know how to pick her men.

Fri A.M.

I got a haircut this A.M. & it's nice not to have  it not hanging on my neck.

It was cold this A.M. -- in the teens & I needed to wear boots, mittens, heavy jacket.

Our thanksgiving dinner was very nice.  The food was good & we enjoyed each other's company.  Torey has to have an operation.  I think they noticed blood in one car, took him to the vet as one ear had blood in it.  They'll cut the length of his ear to remove the blood.  He will go under.  First he had to have a complete check-up, including a urine sample to see if he can take it.  Heart, etc.  First call cost $96.00 & the operation will be a lot more.  That's their baby.  Kim hoped it would happen today but for sure on Mon.

Dale doesn't come home for lunch today -- doesn't want to lose his parking spot.  I make him turkey sandwiches but forgot to include the yogurt he has each lunch day.

I was finally happy after the Mets game last nite. The Mets beat the Braves 4-0 & Pedro M pitched the entire game.  Except the last inning was scary -- bases loaded & Pedro got both Chipper Jones & Andrew Jones out -- the home run hitters.

Sun. is sure a busy TV day.  The Mets last game on NY channel to be on TV so I have to watch that, Nascar & the Steelers at Houston & the Steelers are good!  Even Penn State has improved.

To answer your questions -- it was just the Lavelles, Lundgren & Nelson's who picnicked together.  I remember Janet L. made the best macaroni & cheese.  Oil City was their first church, I think.

Dale is on vacation this next week.

Yesterday Barb & I went to our Mall & we were looking around & I bo't my 1st Christmas gift.  Mentioned we start early!  Barb also bo't her first gift.

Sun. aft. the 18th

Last nite I watched the Wisc/UNC game & it sure was an exciting game.  I was rooting for Wisc.  Boy those guys took some hard tackles.  I bet the Carolina QB was sure sore today. How do the bodies take that punishment?

Today I'm watching the Mets.  Dare I think they could win the game.  They are in the lead as of the 7th inning.

Dale is always changing my dish cloths.  This A.m. I decided to beat him at his own game & took a clean one.  At noon there wasn't the blue one I put out but another one.  He just took it for granted I left the old one there.  Usually he smells if they are sour.  I let him know I didn't like it.

Then I asked him what we could have for supper other than chicken.  He suggested pizza & I liked that.  Win a few, lose a few.

In church this A.M. Patty W. Phillips' boyfriend held the baby during church.  He was a little fussy & they took him out for a little bit.  He is so cute & a good one, that baby, that is.

The Mets did it - they beat the Braves 4-1.  Glavine had a complete game.  Chipper, Andruw, Francouer, who is young & a good hitter.  Just 6 pitches to get those 3 out.  Wow!!!  They took 2 games to 1.  That is a miracle.

Thurs. Sept 22

Kim was fine tonite.  Talkative & in a good mood.  Everyone has problems at one time or another.

Barb tried to cover some spots on the car.  Dale got the color from work but she didn't do a good job -- even she admitted that.  So today Dale redid the job; waxed the car & it looks so nice.  You had to do an A+ job to please Dale.

Yesterday Barb & I went to the Lakewood Mall & I did some more gift shopping.  Also got gift ideas from Kim for Larry.  We went grocery shopping at Wegman's.

We didn't get to the casino.  Guess we lost interest & Dale didn't really care to go.

He has enjoyed his vacation just lazing around.  That's what vacations are for.  This week was Sam B's last day at Shults.  They are moving to N. Carolina.  He has a job in a garage down there.

The weather has been perfect for Dale.  He has spent time in the sun.

Can you believe Hurricane Rita.  I'm glad I'm a Northern & away from the storms.

It is dark before 8pm now so you know summer is over.  Next week, even tomorrow, will show a change in the temps.

We are all in good spirits here.  Glad we are a family that cares for one another.

We didn't get your birthday pkg. mailed until Mon. the 25th so I hope it gets there on time.

Some people are so busy criticizing others they forget the Bible says "All have sinned  fall short of the glory of God."  Rom. 3:23 & in the case of the Samaritan woman "If any one of you are without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."  John 8:7.  But too many of the moral righteous forget that.  I have a new Bible the New International Bible & it is the same as you quoted.  I really like this modern version of both the O.T. & N.T.  At least something got you to read some verses in the Bible!

We went to Jamestown & are really into Christmas shopping.  It is fun.

I ordered a sweater set form Chadwick's & the sleeves are way too long & I plan to do what you did.  Wash it & hope the sleeves shrink some.

Patty Welsh Phillips is coming steadily to church with her friend & today he went to communion with her.  I hope it works out.  And John Bjorkquist is in a nursing home now. He has a bad heart & has been in & out of the hospital.  Too much for Phyllis to care for him.

Warren called Thurs. nite -- he had to see the dentist & wanted me to go to lunch with them. I told him I tried to call them & they had been visiting in New England.  He has another appt. for Nov. 10th & they will come for lunch here.  I'll use hte same menu I had for Benson's.  I couldn't go on Fri.  We went to J.town.

Barb has been looking thru all her snapshots & she has some nice ones of hte family & when Andy & Ed were little.  Ones she took.

I was glad Boston won the first game.  I went to bed so didn't see the finish.  Barb did.  And so did Marie Mathis.  She said she watched it in bed as she has a TV in her bedroom.  Good for her.  She was Dad's age, I'm sure.

I've been watching Philly at Cleveland & they are in overtime.  Cleveland has improved a lot this year, but they lost by 3 pts.

The other nite Lar said he watched "Desperate Housewives" & no one else had.  Kim falls asleep & misses it.  I'm in bed at 10 pm & Barb & Dales watches other TV.

Green Bay is winning against Dallas.  I'm sure a lot of hi fiving is going on at your house. Now I know there is they just got another TD by Ahman Green.  41-14.  And it's a home game.

I'm glad for you, that the library got most of the money they hoped fdor.  At lesat when you are busy the time goes faster.  But I guess it is nice to catch your breath now & then.

Wed pm the 27th.

I tried mixing Progresso Veggie soup with bean & macaroni.  Add paprika & it was really good.  Dale liked it.

We're hoping Boston will win tonite -- if not tonite -- another nite.  They won't give up.

I finally finished another puzzle. It is very pretty.

Thurs A.M.  Boston did it & in 4 games.  What a victory.  I felt bad for St. Louis but they couldn't tame the Red Sox.  It must be a real let down for those hitters who couldn't do anything.   I hear the Mets might choose Willie Randolph for their manager.  Wonder how that will work out.  I hope better than for the Orioles manager this past season, & I can't think of his name -- a former Yankee.

Another nice day, the 3rd in a row.  We were able to see the lunar eclipse clearly last nite.

Hope you had a wonderful birthday.

Kim was very quiet tonite.  She left first & Lar walked Torey home.  After she left, Barb asked what was wrong.  Torey has a limp & Kim is concerned.  He is 12 yrs old & shows his age. Kim walks him more than he is able & that upsets. her.

Sunday, December 14, 2003

Yesterday Patty. W. Phillips called to ask if I'd like to go to our pastor's open house in Sheffield.  I said yes -- she also picked up Marie Mathis & Betty Casey.  The roads were fine & we enjoyed the visit.

Today we have between 4-6" of snow as it has snowed all day as of 3:50 p.m.

Last nite was Shults Christmas party at the Country Club.  Dale didn't stay for the dancing & drinking.  He said the parts mgr. was already feeling good.  He wasn't impressed with the food.  They had prime rib & the meat was OK.  He likes Jackson Valley better.

Yesterday I finally finished shopping for Kim.  They got a new dining room set & this table is rectangular so I got a table cloth to fit it -- on sale plus discount6 & the glassware was on sale plus coupon & I got a relish dish.  One side is divided into 3 parts & the other is plain.  I like it a lot so I hope Kim will.  Larry likes a gift certificate from Lawn &^ Garden & he can get what he wants.  Kim says Lar is shopping there a lot.  Did I mention he wanted a slim TV &^ bot one.  It is by the computer so he can "compute" & watch TV at the same time.

We have a new artificial tree at church & it is beautiful.  Tall & full.  courtesy of Ron & Marilyn Thelin Passenger.  It is on the left side by the piano.  Next Sun. the children's program will be at 6 pm followed by a reception -- cookies & punch.  Coffee as well as no coffee in a Luth church wouldn't be acceptable.

I took chicken from the freezer for dinner & asked Dale how I should fix it.  Chicken & spaghetti was the answer.  We both like it that way.  Barb is making herself a salad, a big one.  She doesn't always want what I serve so she makes her own.

Soon you'll have another teenager.  How time flies.  And it does -- I can't believe I have to bring Sheila's money gift this coming Fri.  And I have to make cookies.  Some for Sheila & Sue, the other gal & I think I'll bring some to Viola Seaquist. She doesn't get to church in this winter weather & she might appreciate some.  It's good her one grandson came back from Calif. as he lives with her & makes meals, etc.  Brian Scarpo.  Barb makes up a tray for Johannsons.

Nice Rachel will have another child.  Have you noticed many times only children want more than one child.

I still haven't decided what to have Christmas Eve.  My books & magazines haven't given me any ideas.

Wed. the 10th

I had to be sure there would be enough Danish for Christmas breakfast so I started a batch & baked them this A.M.  Last Sat I didn't get to bake so Dale's A.M. treat is Danish from the freezer.  I've started  baking cookies but a couple of batches I like to make just before Christmas.  I've made Spritz & Russian Tcakes, a cookie that has several names.  I got my recipe from Stella.

Weather report -- more snow today & tomorrow & snow flurries on Fri.  Let it snow, let it snow...

Just have a couple of gifts left to wrap.

Yesterday I got Cornish hens for Christmas Eve.  Have til Mon. to decide what to have for Christmas Day.  I'd have lamb but Barb & Kim wouldn't be happy.

Better get on with my "schedule" -- just took a little rest period.

Later -- Quality had tilapia froz. fish -- buy 1 get 1 free.  That's what we had for sup per -- pan fried for about 5 min. with lemon juice.  Delicious & it doesn't smell up the house & it is one fish Dale likes.  Baked pot, gr. beans.

And Barb & I decided to have a shrimp cocktail, steak, baked pot., salad for Christmas Eve. Christmas Day we'll have Cornish hens, herbed rice, veggie, relish tray & I might try a recipe I saw Egg Nog pie. Maybe cookies & a pudding Christmas Eve.

Thurs A.M.  I used a plastic sled to take the garbage to the curb.  We must have 6" of snow. Then I swept the snow from the font steps & made a path for the mailman.  Before that I made a banana cream pie (made the shell yesterday) & started dinner rolls.

Sunday, April 6, 2003

Patty's husband's funeral was this aft. at 4pm, preceded by a 2-hour visitation.  I went over shortly after 2pm  so I could see the end of the Mets game, which they lost in the 9th inning. Patty is taking the death very well but it must be very hard on her.  The son Chipper was able to get leave from the Army.

The Mets won 2 out of 3 games with Montreal.  David Cone started the first game & he was so good.  Tom Gladden pitched yesterday & it wasn't hard to root for him & appreciate his work. He looks good in a Met uniform!  Opening day wasn't good for him but he made up for it yesterday.

This A.M. they announced the Call Committee will meet with the candidate on Sat.  Hope it all works out.

This will be a busy week with outside activities.  I don't want to miss the Bible Study Tues. A.M. to see if anything is said about the candidate.  Tues. aft. I get a "perm" at 2 pm  So Mon. I'll do my Tues work -- the bathroom mainly -- & we'll get groceries in the aft.

Last Fri. we went to -- no we didn't we went on Wed. & I already covered that.

We'll celebrate Dale's birthday on Thurs & he wants steak, baked pot, tossed salad & apple pie.  Easier to fix a meal then to find gifts for him.

Mr. Carey called Larry -- they'll be home in a couple of weeks.  He said he'd never live in Fla. year round.  The retirees go to dinner at 4:30 p, & take home doggy bags & that's not for them.  They'll look in Buffalo for a home & Susan also plans to move there.

Enjoyed your letter.  Nice that you were able to be with Roland & Linda.  It is hard to understand Eric & his college studies.  I would think that by now he'd be concerned for his future.  I hope that Lindsay is making passing grades. I wasn't too surprised about Carolyn & Jim & their finances.  I just know I never could have liked like that.  I can enjoy my retirement -- only wish Dad could have lived longer.  Too bad Carolyn didn't get into school teaching -- she trained for it in college.  I can't understand any husband spending all his money & not investing anything for the future.

Mon. Apr. 7

School was called off today due to the weather & Tues. doesn't sound much better   They get 6 days off over Easter & parents have planned trips.  Lynn & family plan to go to Fla, taking 3 extra days.  I wonder how Central Office will make up this snow day.  We got groceries this A.M.  I'm making soup for supper -- a good winter meal! - and a banana cream pie.  It is cold as well, weatherwise.

Tues. A.M. 8th

Decided not to go to church this A.M.  Decided to be lazy & take it easy.  We didn't get the brunt of the storm & the sidewalks are clear for when I walk to the beauty shop.  As soon as Dale left for work, I made a batch of the choc. cookies for a treat for the "girls" & Jerry at the beauty shop.  They like my treats.

No school yesterday cut off the last day of the Easter break.  Lynn's family will still be gone 11 days.  Barb will sit the 2 cats & the dog at Lynn's & will do some housecleaning while they are gone.  She will sleep there.  They also have a fish tank.

My perm came out nice. Good to have curl again.

One Thurs. nite over dinner Kim was amazed at what Lar & Dale know about world events, places, etc.  They both read papers & you learn a lot from the History Channel that they both like.  Another time we were talking about writing & Kim wondered if writing was part of Dale's job.  It is -- he has to write up what he does for a job.  I'm sure people don't realize how much writing is included in most every job today.

Thurs A. M.

I made Dale's birthday apple pie right after breakfast.  And it's a beautiful sunny day with blue skies & warming up.  Who could ask for more -- me that it will stay this way & let us experience spring.

Bert got a carbon dioxide monitor & Barb bro't it home to test our house.  The first time she plugged it in it made a screeching noise & she was sure gas was leaking.  Dale told her gas contain carbon dioxide.  She didn't believe him & she called the gas co & they told her the same thing.  When I came home on Tues. she was here & said "I have a surprise".  She had the monitor in the plug & no noise.  She figures she didn't keep it in long enough because with that noise, I said turn it off.   She can make mountains out of molehills. Both our furnace & stove are not that old.

It's 10 A.M. & Barb is still here.  I need to finish a letter to Millie as her birthday is the 17th.

I'm enclosing an article that I enjoyed reading -- maybe you will.

Monday, March 31, 2003

Dale is soon ready to leave for work with a lingering headache that pained him all weekend.

I'm starting a letter as there are things to tell you.

Kim's heart is fine.  The Dr. said it is a result of stress & caffeine so now she is drinking decaf & after a week the rapid heart beat returned to normal.  The stress is another thing with school & her brother Paul.  He has tried to quit drinking & was "on the wagon" until his cousin came to Atlanta & is a bad influence.  They were in a bar after work & his cousin got drunk, was loud & got kicked out.  Paul was drunk as well -- the police were called & Paul tried to drive away with the policeman hanging onto the truck.  The policeman broke an arm & leg during the incident & Paul ended up in jail.  Meanwhile a backup officer was  speeding to the scene, ran a red light, hit a car & the officer was killed.  So Paul is really in trouble. He's out on bail but Kim said she can't help him anymore.  She has lent him money & she knows she'll never see it again & she thinks maybe it's time for him to learn to be responsible.  She is sure he will get a jail sentence   Naturally she is upset.

Gen call on Sat. & she is mixed up.  Ed & John are always telling her what she can & cannot do & she doesn't like it.  She still hopes to be able to drive but John will never allow it. It is nice to be outside of town,  until you can't drive anymore & then you're stuck.  She drove to the grocery store every day.

At church they announced the Bishop sent a resume of a pastor for us to consider.  The "Call" committee will study it & more will be forthcoming.  We are ready & really need a full time pastor so I hope it works out.

This A.M.'s paper had an obit notice that Charles Phillips, 63, died.  When I looked further I noticed it was Patty Welsh's husband.  Didn't know he was ailing. It was just a notice, not a complete obit.  Patty was in church yesterday.  It does say he died Sun A.M. so it must have been after she left for church.

I found a book by Sandra Brown I hadn't read.  Envy.  It was so good, I stayed up last nite past my 10pm bedtime to finish it.  This is Dale's late week -- was still up by 6 A.M.  Was in bed by 11 pm.

I wasn't totally surprised to hear you hoped to visit but had to change plans.  I know when children become teenagers many different things can interfere with plans.  It was a disappointment but I can understand your situation.  I can remember vacations were different when you boys had jobs, etc.  There will be other times.  I'm anxious to hear about your visit with Roland & Linda -- visit to Mall of America & about JoAnna & Eddie's trip.  At least you got a little change of pack pace.  Time to start chores!

Tuesday, April 1

Saw Dr. Walters at 9:30 & got in right away.  He had to take 2 xrays.  Some bad news, some good news.  The 2 back upper teeth on the left side are abscessed.  They could be pulled but that would leave me with 2 empty spots on my chewing side.  Or I could have root canals by another Dr. as Dr. W. doesn't do root canals on back teeth.  It would cost me $1,000.00  He told me to think it over & call back.  He also said there is no guarantee the root canals would last.  But at 82 they should last me awhile & I have the money so that is no problem.  But I'll talk it over with the family Thurs nite. I'm leaning toward root canals.

We had snow this A.M. but by the time I walked home, it melted.  Did my Tues. work on Mon. as I knew I wouldn't want to start when I returned.  I do plan to iron this aft.

Larry just called & said Patty. W. Phillips' husband killed himself.  She came home from church and found him dead.  How sad for her.

Thurs. Apr. 3rd.  I made an appt. to have the root canals.  I go Tues. the 15th at 9 A.M.  I'll be glad to be rid of the dull ache.  I plan to make a strawberry rhubarb crumble this aft. so it will be warm for dessert.  It's like a crisp.  A recipe from my Taste of Home.

It is soon lunch time & I plan to make BLT sandwiches.

I enjoyed the Mets win last nite, esp. the catch of the supposed home run of S. Sos the wind held up.  Also enjoy that Atlanta is 0 & 2 so far.

Be on the lookout for your birthday present.  Barb will mail it tomorrow.  (It's in the mail.)

And I haven't heard any suggestions for Christmas giving.  And Eddie's birthday.  I could buy part of the boy's gifts & if clothing is wanted, would you shop for me again, Paul.  That way Andy will get what he wants.

Today at church was our session with a layman representing the Synod.  Patty Phillips is busy taking care of the getting of pastors to preach.  So Beth Darling took care of the ballot & they had 10 willing people.  That was a big job.  I thought they might have to get all the people "from the floor" & it would take time.  These are all willing people so that is a good start.  But he warned us it won't happen tomorrow.  Some churches have been without a pastor for 3 years.   He complimented us on our church building & said that would be a good point. I feel a lot better now.  It will come but we'll need patience.

Dale had to go to school again.  He'll leave about 5 pm & will be gone Mon & Tues, coming home between 6-7 pm.  At least it's nice weather for travel.

Dale should be in the motel.  After he left, and the dishes were cleared up, etc., I decided to do some baking.  Set my Danish rolls to finish tomorrow.  Dale always takes a snack so he got the last of the choc. chip so I made choc. chips & molasses crinkle. When all was cleaned up, I sampled my cookies with a cup of fresh coffee.  Barb just went upstairs with a cup of tea and cookies.

I'm waiting for baseball to come on .  The Ariz.-Braves game should be a good one.

Did you shed tears over Sat. Wisc. loss & Green Bay's loss today.  We always think of all of you when we see those teams play.  Other times as well!

It's funny both the N.L. & A.L. teams are playing at the same time.  I have the Braves game on, but will switch during commercials to see how the Mariners are doing!

Mon. the 22nd.

Lar came over with Torey -- Lar raked leaves at Carey's & Torey was with me.  Lar closed a door at Crary's on Torey's tail & Torey spent some time at the vet's office.  It wasn't covered & Torey wags his tail a lot so it started to bleed so they took him back to the vet who wrapped it.  He had to have antibiotics and all.  He couldn't have anything to eat & he didn't eve beg for food.  I asked Lar what Kim said & she wasn't too  happy.  Accidents will happen.

Last nite I stayed up until 11:15 to see the final out that beat the Braves.   Andy was disappointed, but Grandma was happy!  I won't watch much of the Seattle-Yankees game as I'm tired.

Your lamps sound nice.  You didn't have far to go to find them.  I take it the house has been sold so there will be more new neighbors.

I'll call Ed & Gen tomorrow to wish them a Happy Anniversary and to see how Ed is doing.

It's Wed already so I must finish this.

It is 9:15 A.M. & Barb isn't up.  I wash the kitchen floor this A.M. but first I must vacuum the rugs & floor.  I did get the garbage all set for tomorrow's pick up.

Last nite, in bed, as I was reviewing the day, I remembered I forgot to call Gen.  You'll probably celebrate your birthday on Sun. so I plan to call to wish Paul Happy Birthday.  That is, if I don't forget!

Last nite we had ribs cooked in the crockpot & they were very good.  I probably could have been a little more generous with the sauce.  Next time I'll know.

We've had a lot of rain so I hope to get this mailed between the showers.

Dale got back about 6:45 pm & said it was a good session.  On the elec. systems & Dale said no one realizes how complicated it is.  He drove home in the rain.  Something is missing when he's gone.

I hear Barb is up so I'll finish this & get back to work.

We have more snow -- up to 3", I think. Enough to have to shovel.

This aft. Dale went to Jamestown.  I asked him if he was going to Sam's Club and if he did would he get me pecans & toilet tissue.  The pecans are 7.29 for 2 lbs & around 12.00 for 30 rolls of .T. T. -- the good brand that is soft.

Yesterday Kim was at school til after 10 pm.  Reason:  school dance from 7-10 pm.  After school they had to decorate & foolish to drive home & have to turn around practically right away.  After 10 pm they'd have to clean up decorations, etc. & she hoped to be home by 11 pm.  She didn't come over today.  I'm sure they went skiing with the new cover of snow.

Fri nite Lar & Mike went out to eat.  Then Lar walked Torey with Torey leading the way.  They went to Jackson, over Buchanan & Lar decided to shovel Cary's walk.  I heard Torey barking & called to him & in he came.  Lar came when he finished.  Torey got fed & then he settled down.  I was working on my puzzle -- it's a hard one but the end is in sight -- & Lar sat down & watched TV.  Torey wasn't in any hurry to leave so Lar stayed awhile.

Barb & I went to the mall late morning.  Went to Penney's & everything is 25% off & I found a spring jacket I like so I bo't it.

I'm proud of Andy doing so well in his studies.  Isn't it nice to have a son who applies himself to his studies, Paul!!!  I remember someone who could have but didn't, but you still turned out to be a good guy & I'm proud of you.  You certainly are doing well in your career.

I'm watching the All Star Hockey doings tonite.  Sun. is the All Star Game.  It's fun to watch & see the All Stars introduced.  Skill competition tonite.

Dale & I had hamburgers for supper -- Barb made herself a steak salad.

Finally, I finished my puzzle with 2 pieces missing.  [Found 1 on the floor.]  An old puzzle as we save them -- when I vacuumed on Wed. I heard one eaten up by the vacuum cleaner & I thought I had checked thoroly.

Back to hockey -- North American All Stars vs. the World All Stars.  N. Amer. All Stars won the skill contest.

Sun. Feb 4th

In church today the Bishop's assistant preached & it was nice to hear a good sermon and one using the text for the day.

After church I was talking to Patty Welsh Phillips & she said she is now retired.  Her husband has been retired for 2 years & they have plans to travel, etc., so she left her job.  She was secretary to a lawyer.  She isn't that much older than you is she, Paul?  I know she isn't ready for Soc. Security.

Today I watched the Hockey All Star game & it was so good.  The N. Americans beat the World All Stars.  I think the score was 14-11 & that is a big score.  I didn't watch the football All Stars and I saw the end of the golf.  Tiger Woods hasn't done too well so  far.

Your telephone call gave me something to think about pro & con.  No answers for while.  It's a long trip.

Started reading again -- got 2 books at the library last Fri.  Our governor is giving more money -- statewide -- to the libraries.

Karen S. Setili's son is very different.  Very smart in studies.  I feel sorry for him -- he has been too much of a mama's boy.  The daughter who is in her first year of college, is different but no like Evan.

One of Dale's friend's mother died a year ago & the father died this last week.  He was 65 & his wife was in the early 60's.  He had sugar.  Tough to lose both parents in a years time.  The grandmother was a member of St. Paul & she lived to an old age.  After her husband died she came back to Warren so I don't think you knew her Paul,  She was Helen Leonard.

Tues A.M.  Want to get this mailed -- it's grocery day.

Sunday, August 30, 1998

Barb just got back from a walk & she said it was getting warm.  We've had some humid weather & I for one will be glad to see Sept. & cooler weather   Nites are better for sleeping - more low 60s.  This week the day time highs are to be in the 70s.  That is better baking weather.

Went to the library & read "Innocent Blood" by P. D. James & liked it.  I've heard of her but this is the first book I've read.

Dale was in Rochester for 3 days Wed-Fri this past week.  Topic - transmissions.  Now he's on vacation for a week.  Barb & I hope he'll be around long enough so we could make a fast trip to Jamestown.

Last Mon. Lar & Kim got their CRV & it is really nice.  They are pleased with it.  Good sitting & easier to get in like the van.

I've missed church a few Sun. this month, but I got there today & it was good to be back.  After Labor Day we go back to the 10:45 time & I'll be glad.  Today I didn't have much to do in getting Dad set for the day.  Some mornings are worse than others & to be ready for (;30 was a struggle.

In today's bulletin it was announced that there was a rose to honor the birth of a daughter to Mr. & Mrs. Charles Phillips II.  That is Patty Welsh Phillip's son.  I didn't know he was married - or even working.  He was going to JCC.

I sat by Linda Lyle Ekey in church & they have 4 children.  Oldest a girl is a R.N. & working in Bradford Hosp, next son went to school for carpentry & is home & working.  2nd son started a vocational school in Pittsburgh & hated it so he joined the Army last Apr. & is in Okla - Ft. Sill & is learning to drive trucks that carry rockets & loves it.  Will be home in Oct. for 10 days.  Youngest son at Eisenhower.  All smart kids.  It was a tough summer for them - farm equipment broke down (farm in Akeley) washing machine went & they had to get a new car.

Arlene H. sat with us & next Sat. she leaves to visit Beth & family for a month.  She wonders about going as she hasn't felt well this summer.  I think she has sugar & was in the hosp. one time to get it in control.  She mentioned she saw you walking by.

Mrs. Katherine Sundell died.  She was an Ekey & had a daughter & a son Paul who stuttered.  They both live in Maryland now.   Paul never married but has done well in his job.  Mr. Sundell isn't well either.  She was 83.

This A.M. Dad said to me "I wish you could have a baby".  I said we're too old to have children.  He must have been back in the late 40s when I was trying to get pregnant.  When no one (so we thought) in the family had Parkinson's I never thought this would happen to Dad.  He just seemed to give up & give in to the disease.  He doesn't tremble as much as some - more when something upsets him.

The Mets had a good game Sat the 29th.  A homerun in the 9th with 2 outs & kept L.A. from scoring in the bottom of hte 9th.  Too bad McGwire was thrown out of the game against Atlanta but it didn't look like a strike.  I know you can't argue strikes & balls but people pay to see him play.  And last nite the Steelers won.  Dale was happy.  I watched the 1st half.  It will be nice to have football games again but it smothers baseball.  Too much overlapping of sports.  You'll have to send a picture of Andy in his football attire.  Doesn't sound like he's tired of practice.  Would be fun to watch hi mat these sports, Eddie also.

Were they glad to get back to school.  Do they like their teachers.

We're starting to get political literature.  I don't even read anything from Jim Lynch.  He's a shoo in & I don't like him.  Too much ego but I guess it takes a lot in the job like that & someone has to run for office.

I'm rambling so I'll close with our love to all.
