It's a nippy morning but the sun is shining & that makes it nice.

Next Sat. I'm fixing the turkey Dale got at Thanksgiving.  We asked Lar & Kim if they wanted to come over if they didn't have other plans.  They will come.

Their group planned a Super Bowl get together but it was called off.  The host is in the Erie hospital with kidney failure.  It happened very fast.  He is Kim's age & they have 2 children, one at Beaty & one at Warren Hi.  It is so sad.

The reason I'm fixing the turkey so it will be an easy Sun. in preparation for the Super Bowl. I hope the Steelers can win.

Don't think I told you about Dale needing new work shoes.  He went to Valone's but he didn't want to pay $165.00 for them.  He got a cheap pair at KMart & wore them 1 day before going back to his old ones.  Randy Swanson told him about a place near Sugar Grove.  Instead of turning to go to the race track, he went in the opposite direction.  He almost missed it as it is a very small building owned by an Amish man.  He got his shoes, a good pair, for less than $100.00 He likes them.  This man also resoles shoes.  He had a nice visit with this man, who moved here from Va.

Marisa left for Fla. yesterday.  They hope this change of environment will make a difference in her life.  She is a screamer, screaming at Scott & telling him he is dumb, & he doesn't need that.

You'll read in the paper that there was another drug bust in Warren. Also the 5th Ave. bridge will close around Mar. 1 in preparation for a new bridge.  Barb likes to use that bridge but Dale refuses to go over it.  He doesn't like it.

In this A.M. paper there was an interesting article concerning the 70's Steelers when they won 4 Super Bowls.  A few have died & it listed all the players & their jobs now.  Many stayed in the Pittsburgh area.  Lynn Swann is running for G,O.P. Governor in the next election & they think he'll get the nomination.

Betty Casey showed me a letter Mike got concerning the committee he's on concerning Special Ed.  Naturally she was is proud of her children.  She took care of Janie & Cindy, her sisters' girls, at lot & when the 2 groups of kids went to the playground, kids would taunt "Here come the retards".  Janie & Cindy were the slow ones.  Being in the service enabled Mike to get an education & make something of himself.

We sure enjoyed the Robert Montgomery films during Feb.  This A.M. I wanted The Thin Man, a cute story.

Fri. Feb 3rd

I'm having my aft. coffee 1/2 hr. late (3:30 pm).  Just got off the phone after talking to Alice Nasman.  She called to ask if I know Tiger was playing golf in Dublin.  I did but didn't remember to turn the Golf Channel on at 9 A.M.  That led to other subjects & kept on for 1/2 hr.

I'm reading with great interest all the writings on the Steeler players.  There is plenty of coverage & hype.

Larry & Kim will come over Sat. nite.  They had no other plans.

I fixed a crock pot meal for tonite. Last time I made one Dale said "Why don't you add potatoes & veggies next time."  So I did & it smells so good.  Beef.

I'm enclosing a dessert that sounds good to me.  And it sounds easy for a cheesecake recipe.  Been wanting to try making one but none every appealed to me as this one does.

This A.M. I watched "The Bishop's Wife" with David Niven, Cary Grant & Loretta Young. Enjoyed it.  The other nite watched a Barbara Stanwyck & Gary Cooper but didn't see it from the beginning & never got the title.  It was so cute.

The puzzle isn't getting attention these days.  The easy parts are finish & the harder parts are harder to find & fit together.  Barb adds some to help em.

Not much going on here.  But the light is staying longer -- longer days -- and that is nice.

Thanks for the salmon recipe.  Fish isn't a favorite for Dale.  Barb fixes salmon once in awhile.

Not Ryberg's house.
Another of the homes for sale on East Third Ave.

After church I sat on the porch reading the Sun. paper.  The 2nd Sun. t he weather has been accommodating.

Now I'm watching the Braves at Milwaukee.  You know whom I rooting against!  The Mets come on at 4:05.

Talked to Denise Johnson today & she sends greetings.  She wasn't so negative so maybe things are better for her.

Do you remember Harriet Johnson?  (Carlson, her married name.)  Anyway they had one son & they kept him close to them.  Never learned to drive, etc.  Both parents died.  Now he has a girlfriend & she is teaching him to drive.  There is always hope.

Ryberg's house went up for sale this past week.  That makes 4 homes for sale in our area & there could be a 5th if Ed Africa would decide to stay here or go back to Arizona.

Barb is riding her bike & Dale is out in the sun.

Starting the 30th, no tax on clothing in New York, so we'll be going to the Mall one day. Hope I can find something.  In church today, Betty Casey said "it's impossible to find a dress."  I agree, that's why I wear slacks a lot.

I've been watching the Weather Channel a lot because of the hurricane.  Glad I don't live there.

Wed. Last day of Aug!

Yesterday we went to Lakewood to take advantage of N.Y.'s tax free week on clothing. What did I get?  NOTHING.  It is very hard to shop when you are an old lady!  I was looking for a suit.  Tried one on at our Bon Ton but I didn't like the fit & the sleeves are too long. Barb said I'll have to try the catalogues we get.  We just shopped at Wegman's for groceries.  I was very disappointed.

We've been getting rain from Katrina but not in amounts predicted -- 2"-4".  Still the grass is getting greener.  Dale hasn't had to mow much in July & Aug.

I clean the bathroom today but Barb isn't up yet.  My duties are get meals, wash, clean bathroom & my room, change Dale & my sheets,  iron (every other week or so), wash kit. floor & dust.  Baking isn't a chore -- that's fun. So I have spare time to watch TV & take things easy.  I watched a lot of the Weather Channel when Katrina was at its height.  What a loss & I feel for all those people.  An elderly relative from Biloxi is staying at Lake Chautauqua with Lynn's parents who came for the summer.  They have a home in Fla.  It must be terrible with no electricity & the humid heat, plus the rest.  I wondered if a baby would be born during the storm & this A.M.'s paper showed a newborn & mother in Miss. But it was in yesterday's USA Today which I just read this A.M.  When I was home Tues. a good book kept me reading.  The last of the 5 library books.

Scott doesn't read & understand what he reads.  Too impatient to be still.  So he is in a special reading class & that bothers him.  Most of the encouragement he gets comes from Barb.  Marissa yells at him all the time & Lynn & Bob don't take time to help him in reading. It's all up to Barb.

Fri A.M. Sept. 2

Will bring this to a close as after I get my hair done, we will go to CVS & the Mall.  Now I mail letters at the Mall because the mailbox is by the front entrance.

Lar & Kim are fine.  School is OK.  Kim  is able to drive with 3 other teachers.  With gas high she is glad this happened.  I'm sure they are also.

A beautiful weekend ahead.  Sun & not too hot.

Made a pumpkin pie for dessert last nite.  Fall is on the way.

Sunday, May 15, 2005

Yesterday I wrote a thank you to John for his letter & pictures.  Also wrote a note to Gen.

Today was Pentecost & we were encouraged to wear red.  I got a 2-piece red dress when we went to Erie several years ago.  Red jacket & a printed red shift.  Haven't worn it that much. After the service we went right into the meeting about the organ.  One part is completely gone & the other 3 parts will be going so the company suggested fixing all of them, as well as releathering another part & a cleaning.  They said the value of the organ is one half million & they also said more work will be needed in a dozen years or more.  When they called for a motion a few second went by so I made the motion & Betty Casey seconded it.  It will cost $3200.00 & a member left a $3000.00 gift to the church & they'll use that.  All yeses, no no's.  Once they get started it will take about 10 days.

Did you happen to see the Weather Channel & the bit on Great Falls' Giant Springs, now Giant Springs Park.  It was interesting.  Brought back memories of your trek to Giant Springs, wasn't it -- or along the river.

This little interlude will have to do.

Some small birds are trying to build a nest in the hanging basket on the porch.  To stop them we put some small sticks to prevent it.  I have to water the plants & it drowns the nest. They must use the trees for nests, not my plant!

Dad was assigned to Hartford for his intern year.  During the summer before his last year at the Seminary, he served a large church in Peoria, Il. & when the summer was over, they asked him if he would consider a call as the pastor had left.  He said he didn't think he should start out in a large congregation.  His friend Gordon Loren had a call to Bainbridge Island & Dad had the one from Auburn & I think that is why he accepted the call.  There were also some interns in Seattle & the group got together & had a good time.

Maybe he wanted to get away from the family.  I don't remember him saying too much about it.  I do know that Stella & Frank liked to be the ones in control.  We weren't home that much & when we were things went pretty well.  Maybe it was more with the sisters.  I know, tho, they liked me as a wife for their brother, or approved.  It is really sad about Ruth. Too bad she won't even try & make it easier on Mim.  My mother was the one to care for her parents & she always said she hoped she wouldn't be in the same boat & she wasn't.  I think every parent hopes that.

Today in church our pastor asked those to stand who weren't lifetime Lutherans.  Surprising how many stood & looking around, I noted many were brought into the church by Dad.

I'm enclosing an article about one of our members.  It is interesting to read about the prices in the restaurant she & her mother ran.  She always enjoyed Dad's visits when her husband was sick.  She always started the coffee pot when he called.  He was very good about bringing communion to the shut-ins.

Alice Nasman called me tonite to find out about the meeting & was glad to hear the organ will be repaired.  But we talked over an hour & I thought she'd never hang up.  Her feelings are easily hurt so the conversation went on & on.  Maybe she just needed someone to talk to.

Tues. the 17th

Last nite I had to turn on the heat & this A.M. it was 34 & the heat went on to take the chill off.  It's too late to be using the furnace.

Yesterday Dale went to the dentist at 8 A.M. & then took off for Erie for an 10 a.m. appt with the neurologist for a checkup.  He got a new medication . He was back at work at 11:30.

This A.M. after breakfast I read my book "Sleeping Beauty" by Judith Michaels from 7-8 A.M. Then I did the dishes, showered, got dressed &^ made my bed up clean.  Did a load of clothes, read some more.  Then Barb took me to vote at Holy Redeemer.  Back home I read some more, made lunch & read all aft. & finished my book.  It was so good.  Over 500 pages.  So I didn't do much today but read.  The Schwan man came & I got pork chops & I fixed stuffed pork chops for supper.  I didn't even watch my "soaps".

We went to the library yesterday & I got 4 books.  A small one to read next Tues while I wait at the dentist's office.  Fern Michael's "Trading Places", "The Side of the Angels" by Leona Blair, & "Into the Darkness" by Barbara Michaels.

They want to close the Naval Station at Niagara Falls & of course they are upset & will try to fight it.

Just like they want to fight the closing of the Sheffield grade school . They would be bussed to Clarendon.  The school tax will go up.

I'd like to start reading another book but I won't let myself because I never want to lay it down.  I have to do some work tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see who gets the nod for Erie Mayor.  The Erie paper didn't endorse R. Filippe (if that's how you spell it).

Wed A.M.

I worked this A.M. But still am tempted to start another book.  Have to plan Thurs. menu first.  Kim won't be coming -- her club meets that nite.

I did what I said I shouldn't do.  I said I'll only read 100 pages & I'm on p. 160.  I cant put it down.  484 pages.

Sat. Dale & 5 others from work are going to a stock care race in Indianapolis -- the cars to 1/2 mile in 3-4 seconds.  They will leave at 3:30 a.m. Sat. morning.  It takes 6 hours to get there.  They'll stop for breakfast along the way.  Randy Swanson is driving he has a van.

Thurs. nite.  Correction they are going to Columbus, Ohio.  It is drag racing.

Finished my book this aft. & it was such a good book.

In the library how do you choose board members?  Do you always like the ones who are chosen.  Is it hard to find people who choose to accept?  Just curious.  I got a letter from our library wanting a donation.  I'll probably send a donation.

Saturday, March 17, 2005

I have a red circle around Apr. 1 to remind me to think of Ed on that day.  We're rooting for him.

The Mets were on the NYC channel & they look good.  I just hope it continues into the season.

Our paper has had very little on the Erie mayor -- we hear about it on Erie TV.  Interesting it reached your papers.

They finished the digging (gas) by our driveway.  The spot near Conaway's driveway is still a hole.

I finally used my paper shredder.  One drawer needed to be cleaned out.  It is lighter now.  I keep my charge receipts in a shoe box & cleaned out papers as far back as '01.  Got 5 grocery bags full of shredded paper.  Lar took it to use with garbage.  He came by with my state tax.  All I owed was $11.00  Got it sent in.  He also took our wrapped newspapers.

Sheila & I were talking about desserts while getting my hair done.  She said this is easy & good.  Cut choc. cake into cubes.  Make choc. pudding.  Ina trifle bowl layer cake, pudding, cool whip (in layers).  Sprinkle with Heath toffee bits to finish.  Could use other flavors as well.  When I was looking thru dessert recipes I found a similar one using brownies, pudding mix, cool whip, & Heath bar chips.  Plan to try it sometime.  Recipes used van. pudding & milk to mix & then added 1/4 c. cold coffee.  I'm getting tired of pies for dessert.

Back to the Mets.  Galarraga is trying to make the Mets lineup.  He came up with 2 terrific plays & got 2 hits, one a home run.  He's in his early 40's.

We've had a lovely day today but rain is suppose to come in tonite.  Won't be nice tomorrow, Palm Sun.

I called Schwan's yesterday for chicken.  They don't have anyone in Warren now but will see about getting some for me.  They could sent it in dry ice but I don't want to pay postage on it.

Sun. the 20th

I have a new racing "hero".  The bad thing he drives a Ford.  He won the Busch Race yesterday &^ the NASCAR race at Atlanta today.  Carl Edwards. Barb said it's because of the name "Carl".  He just looks like a nice guy.

I finally called Schwan's to find out if I can get chicken.  They don't' have Warren covered but will see what they can do.  I ordered 2 boxes of chicken & if I get it, I hope I can keep getting it.  We are spoiled because their chicken is so good.

[In margin.  repeat!!!!  I'm losing it!]

We had steak for supper.  I marinated it in a sauce from the gal on the Italian program  (Food Channel.)(It was very good.  Barb usually grills the steak but she didn't want to so I said it will be done on the grill inside.  She said it was good.  The best steak I've had for awhile.

I can't imagine Charles trying to use any kind of tools.  Wonder if he ever finished the job.

I like the picture of Roger.  He will be 71 in July.

Kim said she tired chicken in the crock pot using cr. chicken soup & they liked the results.

Betty Casey was back in church today.  But she is retaining water in her body so her ankles, legs, etc. are swollen.

Talked to Marie Mathis today.  She was riding in a bus that picks up the elderly to shop, see the Dr., etc & met a lady from the Crary Home.  Marie said she spoke highly of Larry & Torey.  Torey visits her every day & that helped to adjust to living there.

Tues. the 22nd.

I'm set to wash the kitchen floor but I have to wait for Barb to eat & leave.

The gas men don't do a good job on finishing off the hold they dug.  They don't tamp it down & it sinks down several inches.  Now they are filling it again.  Dale gets disgusted at their work.  At work Dale is doing a transmission job on a gas co. truck.  I'm sure they want a good job done on their truck & they'll get with Dale doing the job.  And that's not just a mother's bias.

I watched Nanny 911 on Fox & I can't believe there are families so out of control.  Have you ever watched it?  The husband, at first, spent more time with his carrier pigeons than his family.  All 5 slept in one bed plus the dog.  The middle boy was afraid of going to the bathroom in the house & went outside the house -- he was "watering the plants".

Thurs. the 24th

Last nite was the last Wed. Lar & Kim come for dinner.  Next week it's back to Thursdays.  No school today or Fri.  They were to have Wed. off but it turned out to be a snow day.  So Kim & 2 of her friends went to play Bingo at the Moose Club.  One friend is a member.

It snowed last nite but it won't last.  Rain is in the forecast for Easter Sun.

We're going to the Mall this aft.

Will enclose our library's newsletter so you can see what happens here.  The paper will tell you about the steel beams for the bridge.  Lots going on in "downtown" Warren.

Heard from Millie & she said Johnny went to Aruba for 5 days.  He had someone to care for Gen.

Nothing special going on here.

Saturday, March 5, 2005

Barb's treadmill was delivered yesterday.  They put it together so Dale didn't have that job.  It is a big one with parts to use the arms as well as walking.  It has a button you can press & it goes uphill like you're walking up a hill.  Tells how many calories you burn while walking. Barb loves it.  She is starting easy -- 1/2 hr. at a time.

Golf is so interesting.  At the final Sun. Mickelson will have Tiger as a partner.  Phil is -20, and Tiger is -19.  What a set up.  It will be interesting.

Alice Nasman (Wayne & Rick's mom) called me today to tell me she won't be in church tomorrow.  She hasn't been feeling well all week -- 24 hr. flu only it's longer.  She was watching golf & so was I.  Both of us root for Tiger.  Betty Casey isn't back to church either. Best to stay in with our winter months.  She's feeling better, tho.

With the commercials on TV today, my thumb gets a good workout muting them out.  And they are so long now.

Dale worked til noon today so I started baking early.  It was the week to make the coffee cake & then I planned to make a pie.  Pumpkin as it's so easy to do.  Then I decided to ask Dale what he'd like.  He said we've had pump. pie lately so how about apple.  So I made an apple pie.  It is tasty.

Dale did his income tax this aft.  Next Wed. Larry will do my state tax.  There are 4 more soccer sessions & then it will be back to Thurs. when they come.  Now Thurs seems like an extra day.

Frank, across the St, has a new agency trying to sell his house.  Hope it goes better this time.  It is probably priced too high.

Golf was exciting & Tiger won.  Then I switched & watched the final laps of  Busch car racing in Mexico City.  One of D.E.I. (Dale Earnhardt Inc.) cars won the race.

Our pastor announced today that she is expecting a baby.  She is very happy -- they were even thinking of adoption.  No need now.

Barb wasn't feeling good today -- headache. She is better tonite.

Mon. Mar. 7

This aft. I watched the Cubs vs. Texas & the Cubs won.  It was a good game.  Ruck Sutcliffe (apt to be wordy) & Gary Thorne announced the game.  Gary is a great announcers & today I didn't have to mute it.  Can't remember the 3rd man, but when Mike Piazza was an L.A. catcher Mike & this fellow were friends & had an apt. together.  I didn't realize this one was retired.  He was traded last year or so -- maybe to the Cubs but don't quote me.  I really don't' like the 3 man team.  Too many to "spout" off.  They trip over their tongues trying to beat the others in showing off how much they think they know.  The name above is Eric Karros.   Just saw it on TV.  Tues aft & I'm watching the Giants vs. Texas & the same announcers.

It's 12 outside.  And what's for supper.  Hamburgers & potato salad.  Sounds like a summertime meal.  But I didn't feel like macaroni & cheese & pot. salad sounded good to me.  We just got a dusting of snow.

Buffalo is having a terrible time with finances.  The 5 pm news keeps us informed.  I like the announcers so I watched WGRZ -- NBC in Buff.

Thurs. the 10th of Mar.

Your letter with "The Bookworm" arrived today & I noticed it was mailed Mar. 2.  Wonder why it took so long to arrive.

Last nite Kim told us about an incident at school.  A 9th grade girl was caught stealing.   They suspected her but couldn't prove it so they set up a camera & caught her.  Then the girl's locker room was next.  Rolls of toilet paper in the toilet & paper towels in the sink.  It happened twice.  So Kim spoke to the girls in that class & informed them from now on there would be an aid to watch them in the locker room.  And Kim said I know who is responsible & the girl looked at Kim & mouthed "bitch".  Kim took her to the office.  If she does this in 9th grade, what will happen when she is in 12th grade.  Maybe she won't make it.  She was suspended 5 days for the theft.  People are afraid of the family -- afraid of revenge.  T hat's what teachers put up with in Sheffield.

Kim & Larry got a new treadmills awhile ago.  Kim runs on it but Lar walks.  You can't run on Barb's.

I'm watching a program on Jay Leno's car collection.   They are redoing a 1966 Toronado  to make it over -- make it elite.  It's interesting.  He doesn't have children -- old cars are his babies & he has quite a collection.  At times there are old cars up for bid & it's amazing how expensive they can be.  Fun to watch.

Barb was glad to hear her camera is ready.  She wants to know how much she owes you, including postage.

Glad you're back to normal.  Have you caught up on your work.

I like the picture illustrations in your letters.

Glad you're feeling good again & that no one else was sick.  Nice you kept your germs to yourself!!!

One nite Dale said his throat was sore but nothing developed.  We were glad.

Sunday, September 26, 2004

Thanks so much for the pictures of Andy.  They are so good -- he has a nice smile.  Comparing with last year's picture you can see changes.  Your son is growing up.

I've been receiving calls & literature for hearing aids but they just go into the "circular" file.  I wonder how they got your name -- I guess you can get all kinds of info thru the computer. The info you sent on the house & families proves that.

Frank, across the st., took down the grape vines & arbor in their backyard & it looks so nice & gives more yard space.  This weekend his "ex" was helping him & today she cleared out the front corner that had grown wild with weeds.  They overplanted when they did that.  I'm sure that didn't help when people came to see the house.  They might have to cut the price again.  Faye is the one holding out.

Thurs. nite when Kim saw the 5 mum plants, she couldn't believe they were 5/10.00.  The Sat. before she got 2/10.00 & they are smaller pots.  It must have been a one-day special. They have a new principal & vice principal at Sheffield & he is not liked.  He closes his office door & does nothing.  The Vice p., a woman, does all the work.  The office sec'y has a sign on her desk M.Y.O.B. to keep her mouth shut.  He lifts weights during gym classes & showers.  A teacher who will retire next June is ready to go to the superintendent & tell him the story.  Last year he was at Warren Hi.  If he stays around, Kim is thinking about an opening at Warren Hi next year, even tho she'd like to stay put.

We enjoyed our dinner at the Fernwood.  Barb & I had the fish fry & the fish is delicious, but I'm sure it can't compare to Wi's fish dinners.  Dale had the steak-shrimp shish kabob & he liked it but it wasn't quite as good as he had before.  Maybe there was a different chef.

Betty Casey & some of her family were with her.  Sandy who is divorced, the younger sister whose name I don't remember & her husband.  Son Joe & 2nd wife.  Joe was married to Laura Hause & had 3 children with her.  They were with them today & the daughter looks just like Laura.  They started dating in 9th grade.  But it didn't last.

For once I have menus planned for the whole week.  Hope I stick to them.  Tues. is Dale's long day & it's also Bible Study at 11:15 A.M. followed by a potluck.  The pastor will be the teacher.  Dale said it would be OK with him.  It's cool enough for soup & that adds to his meal.  And I'll have snacks ready for him.  Even if he is 47, I'm still his mother & he does good things for me & I reciprocate.

The only one who caused my gray hairs was Dale. I'd tell him he couldn't go out on a school nite & he'd disregard it & go out the little bedroom, onto the roof & jump to the ground.  I know a lot of your weekends were spent in N.Y. area but I figured you had common sense & wouldn't overdo it.  Or was I one of those with my head in the sand?  Hoping for the best. After a few struggles -- if that's the right word -- I think you all turned out pretty well. Thanks to JoAnna, I know you did!

Wed. Sept 29.

Mon. when I went for my eye appts. it was cancelled, the Dr. was at a meeting.  The computer said appt. cancelled by the patient & that made me made.  Someone made an error & blamed me.  New appt. Oct 11.   Barb said that's the day we're going to Erie.  I called & said I had an appt. so it will be Oct. 25th.

Dale had a 10 A.M. appt. to have his eyes examined & he needs new lenses.  He doesn't go to the medical Dr.  Barb had an 11:15 appt. at the same place.  The lady asked if she wanted it under Dale's name & his insurance.  Barb said "He's my brother."  Dale can get time off for Dr.'s appt.

You know I would walk over the 5th to mail letters.  They took that mail box away.  I know the post man will pick up letters left by our mailbox so maybe I'll be doing that.  I'll miss walking over there.

I finally got one up on Barb.  She got groceries for me.  Costs $24.11 & I had given her $25.00.  She said I'll give you 89 cents & you'll owe me 1.00.  I didn't agree.  She even accused me of being like Scott in math.  Finally I got thru to her.  I'd give her 11 cents & she'd give me 1.00.

Scott got his grades & they were bad.  He always says he doesn't have any homework when he dos.  When he does homework he rushes thru & doesn't check.  Barb is suppose to help him & she does.  but he is very stubborn & doesn't want her telling him what to do.  Lynn cares but not enough to keep a check on his work.  And she won't tell the teachers he has ADHD or whatever the letters are.

I'm watching the Mets at Atlanta (1 pm game) & the Mets are 3-2 so far!  They did win 1 game so it's 1-1.  It's almost over & then the playoffs & World Series.  I hope St. Louis takes it all. They've been the bst all summer.  Exciting end for the N.L. & wild card.

Fri A.M.  Ready to get my hair done including a trim.  6 weeks since my perm.  Times sure flies.

Saturday, December 27, 2003

It's a beautiful Sat. aft. with sun shining in on the kitchen table.

This A.M. Barb & I went to the library &^ I got 2 books.  Blind Side by Catherine Coulter & The Forgotten by Faye Kellerman.  Read a few pages from each & think I'll read Blind Side, an FBI thriller first.  Then we went to the Mall& looked around.  Barb got 2 calendars at half price & I got a couple of necessities.

When I got the mail was pleased to see a letter.  I thought you might be too busy to write. An added pleasure.

Mon. we plan to go to Jamestown.  Barb needs some foods from Wegmans she can't find in Warren.  Maybe they will still have some bargains at the Mall.

Watched Pitt get beat by UVA.  Just turned to see Buff. getting beat by New England.  Buff. front line has injuries & they can't protect the QB.  It hasn't been a pretty season for Buff. fans but each home game has been a sellout.

The only thin I've done today is make a coffee cake.  Nice to be lazy.  I should do some ironing but it will still be there next week.

Called Gen last nite as I  haven't heard from her.  She lost my telephone number again.  She did mention Millie had water in her basement & she had Christmas Eve & they always use the basement.  It was something Ed had told Millie years ago to keep an eye on.  Today her grandsons are going to fix it for her.

Ray Forstrum (Youngsville) preached today as our pastor had the flue.  He was called at 7 A.M., so he didn't have much time to get ready.

Betty Casey had a slight stroke & should get out of the hosp. today.  Alice Nasman was back in church today but I didn't get a chance to talk to her.  She had been in the hosp. Janelle Welsh (don't recall her married name) was in church today -- home for a week.  Her daughter died recently.  Janelle asked about Barb.  She is in Calif. since her marriage.

Kim just called to see if we remembered we're invited for dinner at 6.  I won't forget that I don't have to fix a meal today.

I'm watching football.  Dallas vs. New Orleans.  I'm sure you were rooting for Seattle to lose last nite but they turned the tables & won.

Tues. Dec. 30

We had a nice time at Lar & Kim's.  The meal was delicious.  Tender meat, large stuffed potato halves.  I'd like to do that during the holidays to make it easier for me.  Maybe I will next Christmas.

Yesterday we went to Jamestown.  I got some Christmas decorations 1/2 price & that's about all.

We ate lunch at a new Italian place == Barb had lasagna & salad & I had 1/2 meatball sub. Very good but too much food.  I ate my meatballs & part of the rolls -- too much to eat but very tasty.

This aft. we're going grocery shopping.  Also to the bank to cash a check for Jan. expenses; to CVS for medication & to the Mall.  Kim gave me a top & it is too big so I'll exchange it.

New Year's Eve

Didn't know what to make for supper so it turned out to be homemade chicken soup & pumpkin pie.  Both are good.  I had warm pumpkin pie & coffee at 4 pm & soup at 5 pm.  It's a help yourself meal.

I always tho't Lar & Kim were busy New Years Day & when I mentioned it, Kim said no.  So they will be here for dinner.  In Pa. pork & sauerkraut are popular for New Years & we'll have pork loin.  Kim isn't fond of sauerkraut but I have a small can & might have it for any who like it.  I learned to like it while working at Beaty.

Kim & Lar are going to a party at Betsy Singer.  Finally remembered her last name. You might see her picture with 2 others in our paper concerning hospital doings.  She has a part time job at the hospital.

We'll take the tree down sometime on Fri.  I'm ready to have the house back in normal order.

Dale worked 1/2 day today but it was 3:30-4 pm before he got home.  A fellow who used to work at Shults but now has his own shop had gotten a run down van.  Had it towed to Shults & asked Dale to check it.  It didn't run. Dale got it to run & he earned $50.00.  He's not as free in sharing his time & talent after working 8 hrs a day on cars.

Didn't see U of Wis. lose today but did watch part of Ore. vs. Minn.  The ending was exciting when Mn. won in the last seconds.

I doubt if I'll be awake to see the New Year in.  Early to bed, earlyi to rise is for me.

Jan 1.  Happy New Year

I'm watching the Honeymooners & it's a crazy episode.  I laugh so hard I get tears.  They are on a train & handcuffed & try to sleep in a sleeping car.  Suppose to be going to Minneapolis but end up in Va.   One of the funniest ever.

The sun is shining but cold.  I think I'll end this & walk to the 5th Ave. mailbox & get a little fresh air.

It's a lazy day, not rushed like Christmas, so I'm enjoying it.

So far Iowa is running over Fla.  Barb says we have to root for Iowa.

Sunday, December 14, 2003

Yesterday Patty. W. Phillips called to ask if I'd like to go to our pastor's open house in Sheffield.  I said yes -- she also picked up Marie Mathis & Betty Casey.  The roads were fine & we enjoyed the visit.

Today we have between 4-6" of snow as it has snowed all day as of 3:50 p.m.

Last nite was Shults Christmas party at the Country Club.  Dale didn't stay for the dancing & drinking.  He said the parts mgr. was already feeling good.  He wasn't impressed with the food.  They had prime rib & the meat was OK.  He likes Jackson Valley better.

Yesterday I finally finished shopping for Kim.  They got a new dining room set & this table is rectangular so I got a table cloth to fit it -- on sale plus discount6 & the glassware was on sale plus coupon & I got a relish dish.  One side is divided into 3 parts & the other is plain.  I like it a lot so I hope Kim will.  Larry likes a gift certificate from Lawn &^ Garden & he can get what he wants.  Kim says Lar is shopping there a lot.  Did I mention he wanted a slim TV &^ bot one.  It is by the computer so he can "compute" & watch TV at the same time.

We have a new artificial tree at church & it is beautiful.  Tall & full.  courtesy of Ron & Marilyn Thelin Passenger.  It is on the left side by the piano.  Next Sun. the children's program will be at 6 pm followed by a reception -- cookies & punch.  Coffee as well as no coffee in a Luth church wouldn't be acceptable.

I took chicken from the freezer for dinner & asked Dale how I should fix it.  Chicken & spaghetti was the answer.  We both like it that way.  Barb is making herself a salad, a big one.  She doesn't always want what I serve so she makes her own.

Soon you'll have another teenager.  How time flies.  And it does -- I can't believe I have to bring Sheila's money gift this coming Fri.  And I have to make cookies.  Some for Sheila & Sue, the other gal & I think I'll bring some to Viola Seaquist. She doesn't get to church in this winter weather & she might appreciate some.  It's good her one grandson came back from Calif. as he lives with her & makes meals, etc.  Brian Scarpo.  Barb makes up a tray for Johannsons.

Nice Rachel will have another child.  Have you noticed many times only children want more than one child.

I still haven't decided what to have Christmas Eve.  My books & magazines haven't given me any ideas.

Wed. the 10th

I had to be sure there would be enough Danish for Christmas breakfast so I started a batch & baked them this A.M.  Last Sat I didn't get to bake so Dale's A.M. treat is Danish from the freezer.  I've started  baking cookies but a couple of batches I like to make just before Christmas.  I've made Spritz & Russian Tcakes, a cookie that has several names.  I got my recipe from Stella.

Weather report -- more snow today & tomorrow & snow flurries on Fri.  Let it snow, let it snow...

Just have a couple of gifts left to wrap.

Yesterday I got Cornish hens for Christmas Eve.  Have til Mon. to decide what to have for Christmas Day.  I'd have lamb but Barb & Kim wouldn't be happy.

Better get on with my "schedule" -- just took a little rest period.

Later -- Quality had tilapia froz. fish -- buy 1 get 1 free.  That's what we had for sup per -- pan fried for about 5 min. with lemon juice.  Delicious & it doesn't smell up the house & it is one fish Dale likes.  Baked pot, gr. beans.

And Barb & I decided to have a shrimp cocktail, steak, baked pot., salad for Christmas Eve. Christmas Day we'll have Cornish hens, herbed rice, veggie, relish tray & I might try a recipe I saw Egg Nog pie. Maybe cookies & a pudding Christmas Eve.

Thurs A.M.  I used a plastic sled to take the garbage to the curb.  We must have 6" of snow. Then I swept the snow from the font steps & made a path for the mailman.  Before that I made a banana cream pie (made the shell yesterday) & started dinner rolls.

Sunday, February 23, 2003

The topic here is the weather & how long winter has been & all the snow.  More snow today & cold weather.  Better next Fri. & Sat. & then another cold wave!  But we're talking about going to Jamestown on Fri. so I hope it does warm up a bit.

I'm watching golf in sunny & warm Calif.

Back to last Fri. with Benson's.  One of our group, Sig & Carol Decker from Kane, haven't been with us for awhile due to Carol's illness.  She has dementia & it has gotten worse.  Pat saw them in the grocery store & Carol just had a blank look.  I sure hope they can find something to help Alzheimers.  I keep wondering how Gen will take it when she will have to go into a home for more care.  Pat felt bad for her.  Carol.

They announced this A.M. that starting Mar. 15, we will have a new organist.  She has subbed for us & knows the Luth. service.  It will be so nice to have the organ.  Just hope the next good news will be a new pastor.

Finished my puzzle & started another.  This one has a lot of colored flowers so it will be hard.  But I'm in no rush.  Too hard so I started another one.

Barb looked over some of her clothes & has 2 big bags to be given to the Salvation Army.  I should do the same.  They say if you don't wear something for a y ear or so get rid of it -- they are just taking up space in the closet.  The only thing for  me -- sometimes I wish I still had a blouse I gave away.  My closet is too crowded.  I can't resist a bargain!  Sometimes they don't  turn out to be bargains -- I get carried away by the price.

Betty Casey told me today the USA would be at war this week.   She listens to an evangelist who was using Bible passage to prove his point.  It said so sin the Bible!  You can prove many things by taking Bible verses out of context.  Also did you know JoAnna is a Biblical name.  In the 3rd chapter of Luke:  "Joanna, whose husband was an officer in Herod's court...." was a follower of Jesus.  The Jo and Anna aren't separated.

I really had a good laugh when I read your letter concerning the -- what do you call them, a nose razor? It was so funny & I could imagine the situation in my mind.  Dad had such an implement & I still have it & use it at times.  Mine is a Remington make.

Mon. Feb 24

More snow & enough to shovel.  Lar was at Carey's & Dale is shovelling our walks.  Erie was having snow as well & has 125" & if it keeps snowing in March, they could pass their high mark of 150".

Got a note from Gen.  They now have a P.O. box number & John picks up the mail.  I'm sure he can keep better track of bills, etc. this way.  You could tell this letter wasn't Gen of past years.

Wed Feb 26 -

It was 3 at 6 A.M.  We are living thru a history-making period, weatherwise.  The big cities have high snow levels & low temps.  Andy & Eddie can tell their children about the snows of '03!  And the lack of snow in Wis.

Just finished a note to Gen to tell her I got the change of address.

Also made out my needs for Mar.  Fri after I get my hair done, I'll go to the bank for my monthly withdrawal.

The church makes out financial sheets & I noticed I didn't pay my pledge in full.  After checking I realized I had increased it by 5.00 but when Jan '02 came around I hadn't remembered.  So for 14 months I owed money  So I'll ad some each month to make it up.  The Lord has been good to me so it's only right to reflect that in my giving.

Someone was looking at Carey's house this A.M.

Last Sun nite H&G had a House Hunters, USA, showing buyers in New York City, San Fran. & New Orleans.  I liked it.

Thurs 27th

Had a letter from Millie yesterday. Linda was home for a weekend & they took Gen out to lunch, then to Filene's where she bo't a pair of shoes.  Millie said "I hope she will wear them."  To get out of the house Millie takes the bus to the Holyoke Mall.  Nice that she can get there but I'm sure she has to transfer along the way.  No buses go by Gen's house so she is stranded.  Maybe it's just as well as she could forget which bus to get home.  I'm glad I can still walk to get my hair done; to the library & bank.  Just waiting for nicer weather.

Sunday, February 10, 2002

It's a cloudy aft. dark & trying to rain.  A good time for a nap but I want to start your letter.

Wed. is Ash Wed. & many Lutheran churches use ashes.  Our interim pastor plans to, so that will be a new experience for us.  First & St. Paul have had Wed Lenten midweek services together alternating churches.  Not this year.  First's pastor had to have a knee replacement & guess who is helping for 6 weeks.  St. Paul's former pastor, Gary Risher & he wouldn't want to come to St. Paul.  Heard he had a chance to go to a church in Pittsburgh but because of being at First for 6 weeks, he didn't take it.  Sounds funny to me.  Seems like he'd want a salary & benefits.  Margaret doesn't want to give up her teaching job so she'll have to support him. He still has a couple of years before Social Security.

A couple of thoughts have been on my mind.

Aunt Ida & Aunt Helen gave my folks 6 sets of sterling silverware for their 25th wedding anniversary.  Eventually I got it.  (Gen has her own.)  I always thought I'd give it to Barb, the only daughter.  But Barb is apt to sell things if she is short of money (yard sales she had in Oshkosh).  And I wouldn't like that.  So I'm wondering about the boys getting it.  Dividing it -- 4 each.  I added a serving fork, gravy ladle & other pieces so there is service for 8.  Then there is Grandpa Nelson's watch Ford gave Dad.  Who gets that?  It is something to think about.  I'd like that settled now.

For me, half the fun of having company or your visits is the planning.  I have meals planned, grocery lists & things to do before you come.  A couple are to clean the storage spaces below the sinks.  Things get shoved in back & I don't know what's what.  I'll try to get them in order.  Need to check my closets.  Will have more for the Salvation Army.

Carey's left for Fla. last Sat. via Buffalo.  May Ann has a bad back so she will stay with Paula in Buff. & Jack will drive to Fla. with the dog.  When he arrives, Mary Ann will fly down & he will pick her up at the airport.  He brought the garage door opener over for Dale so he can use their garage.  They'll be back in May.  Larry stops in  to water plans & check on things.  They had 2 dogs but one had to be put to sleep.

Barb is sewing her sweater together.  Has ends to weave in & the neck to finish.  She hopes to finish it next week.  It came out so nice.

John Hornstrom was in church this A.M.  He brought Arlene home for 4 days.  He's on vacation.  She was living with him but she didn't want him to go to work & he can't do that.  So she is with Julie & her family.  They'll make Arlene get up, get dressed & make her take her medications.

Mon A.M.

This is Dale's early week so I got an early start on my work & I'm ready for a break.  I got the cupboards under the kitchen & laundry room sinks cleaned & in order.  They look nice for awhile.  Now I'm getting 2 loads of wash done & then I'll make Dale's bed.  I only have 1 set of flannel sheets for his bed.  Am suppose to hove another set but where I stored them is a secret!  I can't find them.

We awoke to a layer of snow but not enough to shovel.  The sun is out now (10 am) so things are pretty.  I'm at the kitchen table & looking at the fir trees & they are snow tipped & make a pretty picture.  It is also time for "Murder, She Wrote".

I noticed your favorite author C. Hiaasen had a new book out.  Also another book "The Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen that sounds interesting to me.

Betty Casey has 14 grandchildren & 6 great grandchildren.  Just welcomed a new g.c.

Tues A.M. the 12th

I'm on a "coffee break" having finished my chores for today.  After lunch we get groceries.  You can see I don't push myself.  I figure if you keep your house picked up, it always looks O.K.  The pastor who preached last Sun. is from Jamestown & they live in the Lutheran Home Apts.  Their apt. was just repainted & things had hto be gone over & she found many things she didn't use anymore & was getting rid of things.  Her spring housecleaning was done for her.  At home Spfld. spring housecleaning meant airing mattresses, beating rugs hung over the clothes line.  Curtains dried on curtain stretchers.  Glad that is in the past.  Ah memories.  We all helped.

Today's paper had the obit of Scott Daelhausen.  51 yrs.  Graduated with you.

Saturday, September 22, 2001

Yesterday aft. on our way to the Mall, I noticed a new batch of corn on the cob coming in.  On our way home we stopped to pick up a baker's dozen.  It was so good. Will have more today with steaks.

Don't think I mentioned this (sometimes in my mind I think of what to write you) but I didn't know what to make for supper on nite.  Settled on a casserole using ground beef, veggies, kidney beans & noodles. It was good.  The next day for lunch I added bouillon to it & made it soup & it also was tasty.  Think I'll use it for soup by adding more bouillon.  I've heard of hamburger soup but never made it.  Dale liked it.

Did you happen to watch the Mets/Braves game in NYC.  The opening was inspirational.  Good rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.  During the 7th inning stretch & Liza Minnelli sang New York, New York with 5 firemen or policemen behind her.  She was so good & the men were doing a little side step.  Almost a full stadium & Mike Piazza won the game with a home run.  The Major was there & a lot of police & fire people were at the game as guests.  And the Mets gave up a day's pay to go to the Police & Firemen's fund.  It was really a great thing, not only for Met fans but for all people.

Wonder what the Yankees will do to top this, when they play again in NYC.

I got Andy's thank you note.  It sounds like he had a good day.

Which brings to mind Christmas.  And that means suggestions.  Money or ideas for gifts.  Please think about it as Barb & I like to get going early on this.  Pretty Please!

About 6 years ago -- longer than that, an older woman asked Kim to be her power of attorney.  Kim agreed to help.  Last week this person called Kim & wanted help.  She has an apt. at the Towers.  When Kim saw her she understood.  The woman has a bad heart & needs oxygen handy.  The she got worse, was in the hosp. & then Central Nursing Home.  She doesn't have much money so had to go on assistance but first there are many questions to be answered & Kim was called.  When she works she can't make day appointments to see people.  Kim didn't even have a key to get the necessary papers, etc.  But the social worker for Beverly, Inc. is a great help & will take care of the questionnaire, etc.  But Kim was upset so I guess it isn't always easy to be nice & help people.  The woman has a daughter in Fla & she could care less. They don't' get along.

Sun the 23rd.

The pastor wasn't in church this A.M. & we wonder why.  A retired pastor from Jamestown had the service.  He's a former Augustana Synod, & those pastors know how to preach so we receive something.

It's a lovely day & Barb is riding her bike.  A rainy, cooler week is predicted.

I'm including a cartoon that fits me to a "T".  So hard to give up those coffee breaks, plus.

Buffalo just got an interception & got a TD, thanks to Peyton Manning.  I'm sure they don't have a chance for a win.  Like Penn State yesterday.  And Coach Paterno wants his 100th win.  You were happy Wisc. won.

And what about those Mets, amazing, aren't they?

Much to my dismay, the Mets aren't on TV today.  It's been a great series with all that has happned in NYC.  "You gotta believe".

Remember Sandy Casey, your age.  Her son, in his early 20s, lost one testicle & the cancer spread to spots on his lung.  Now the other testicle has to be removed & then chemo or is it Kemo.  Right now his blood count is too low for an operation.  He has a baby around a year or so.  Not married & it sounds like the gal left & he has the child.  Betty Casey is the grandmother & we sit together in church.

Tues. A.M. the 25th.

Next letter will have an Oct. date.  Hard to believe.

Fri. Dale has to go to school for the day.  Next week he goes for 2 days.

Better get this ready for mailing.  All is well here.

Sunday, June 11, 2000

Yesterday Dale got the rug & pad down in his room.  He tried to rent a rug stretcher but it was out so he still has that to do.  It is a light gray & looks so nice.  Make the room look bigger.  W hen I put clean sheets on his bed tomorrow, I'll put the new bedspread on .  He'd like new curtains.

He is working on the garage window by Carey's.  Removing paint & will repaint it.

Mon. he leaves for Rochester for 3 days of school, returning Thurs around dinner time.

Last Wed. I went out to lunch with Betty Casey.  We rode the bus & went to the Mall & ate at Ponderosa.  It has been remodeled & is much nicer now.  We had the buffet.  We shopped a bit & took the bus home.

Yesterday, Sat, it reached the 90's & was HOT.  We turned on the A.C.  Not as bad today but humid & it's getting dark & showers are predicted.

I don't think I told you but our big storm a week ago was hard on Lar & Kim.  Lightning hit & ruined a T.V., 2 telephones, & their computer.  The new Phy Ed teacher suggested to Kim they go to Circuit City in Erie & check their computers.  T hey have insurance -- $250.00 deductible.

Kim' sister & family might come this summer.  They were planning to go to Fla. in July, but won't if her sister comes here.   Kim said they'll have to take a couple of weekends & get away.

I received a letter from Warren Luthgren, my cousin in charge of Aunt Esther's estate & 6 of us, 1 nephew & 5 nieces, each received a check for $1,256.30.  I put $1000.00 in the bank & it will go for the driveway project & I kept 256.00 for me.  I'd like a suit next fall.  I don't' know when the project will get started & your summer schedule sounds so busy so I don't know when you'll see it completed.  I was surprised when there was that much money left since she was in the nursing home so long.

Yesterday A.M. I was at the library a little after 9 A.M. to return books & get more.  Got one by Anne Perry:  Bedford Square - I like her novels.  Another one by Patricia Cornwell & a new author Luanne Rice:  Follow the Stars Home.  I didn't finish it.  Felt it took too long to get into the story & I lost interest.  I'm really on a reading binge!

Good for Eddie on his book report & that he did so well in 3rd grade.  Hard to believe Andy will go into 7th & Eddie 4th grade.  Time goes too fast.

Tues - June 13 - Gen's birthday.  I'll call her later.

This is my day to clean upstairs -- the bathroom & my room.  With the bedrooms looking so nice I decided to get rid of hte file cabinet in my room.  That meant going thru papers & throwing out some of it.  I found some letters hand written when you were in Mpls. & from U.B. so you'll have those to read plus other things.  Cards, pictures, & think you'll enjoy going thru someday.  I still have to dust my room -- it took quite awhile to go thru everything.  Kim was over for awhile & we had coffee & talked.  Tomorrow Lar & Kim are going to Erie to see about a computer.  Vacation day for Lar.  Torey will come over here to keep me company & vice versa.

Some time ago, I got a bedspread for Dale's bed for 20.00 but  it didn't look that good.

Last nite Barb & I went to the Mall.  Penney's had nothing we liked so we looked at Bon Ton & we found one & we think it looks good.  Dale is away but he should like it.  A nice contrast with the light walls & light gray rug.

Barb saw a set she liked so she got hers & they look nice -- a floral print.  Sheets too.  But she needed new valences & found some plain olive green & they look nice.  So the upstairs is in pretty good shape.

Tonite we went to Perkins for supper but it wasn't that good.

K Mart had paper shredders on sale & I got one & have plenty to shred.  Anything with credit numbers or S.S. number, etc.  I don't like to just throw away so I try to cut them up.  Now it will be easier.  Stuff from Dad to throw out.  Next I have to clean Dad's top drawer & get rid of more stuff.

Want to mail this tomorrow, Wed. so this is the end ofor rhis time.

Barb saw a set she liked so she got hers & they look nice

Friday, December 10, 1999

Lar bro't the tree today & Barb is putting the lights on it & then I'll help with the rest of the decorations.  I think I'm thru with my shopping.

Wed. Bensons and Hollertzs are coming for lunch.  I'll fix a chicken dinner with vienetta & cookie for dessert.

I got a start on the rolls for Betty G. Mailhot.  She called this A.M. to check & ask me how much they'd be.  I didn't want money so I said a gift to Hospice or the animal shelter.  I don't want to start baking rolls to sell.  They have to be done by 9:30 so I'll get up early.  Have things ready to go - pans, etc.

Got your letter today as well as the Christmas letter.  That was a surprise - it's only the 10th!!!

Had a Dr. appt. this aft.  The thyroid makes my eyes funny so he gave me a new prescription.  Start with 4 pills  3 times a day & by the end of the month I go down to 3 pills, 3 times a day & then I have to see him Dec. 27th at 3:45.  Blood pressure & weight O.K.

Law & Order is on so I'm not sure if I can write & listen at the same time.

Last Wed. Betty C. & I went to lunch at The Plaza.  They are always crowded & the food is good.

Yesterday I got a permanent & today the Dr.  Next week nothing except Wed.  But that means cleaning the house & some baking.  Cardamon rolls as they love them.

When you're here we'd like to go out to eat but it would be in Warren & the best place is Holiday Inn.  We can decide when you're here.

Kim took a personal day last Wed.  Worked at home & did errands.  Next weekend they go to a party & wear dressy clothes.  Kim has a long black skirt & wanted a new top.  She went o the Salvation Army Store & found  a top - never worn.  Price tag was 60.00 & Kim got it for 3.00.  The clerk asked her if she had seen the red dress made by the same co.  Kim looked at it.  Also new, her size & she got it for 6.00.

Last Mon. we went to Jamestown & I saw a dress I liked.  A Lesley Fay.  Tried it on & liked it.  2 piece.  A print, pleated skirt & a plain light purple top.  Feels good on me so I got it - on sale but had to pay tax in N.Y.  Got a cute jumper & turtleneck at Walmarts for the little girl I wrote about.  Good prices at Walmart.

It was a good Law & Order.  I like the dark haired D.A.  He's good.

P.S.  Almost forgot.  Good report card for Andy.  I hope he makes the Honor Roll next time.  Now you're a parent & want your child to do his best.  I felt the same way!!  Only you "guys" didn't cooperate.  I hope Andy will.

Just remembered I changed the gift for Eddie.  It cost more than the one I tho't I'd send.

Now it's Sat. aft.

Was up at 5:30 this A.M. & had the rolls ready before 9:30.  Then I made us a coffee cake & 2 kinds of cookies.

Took it easy for awhile & this aft. finished trimming the tree.  Looks nice.

I know from letters, Eddie like to help in the kitchen at times.  I made the tea cakes that have to be rolled in powdered sugar & could have used his help.  He might have enjoyed that.  But it all got done.

Found a new idea for baked pot.  Cut it in half lengthwise.  Put a slice of onion & a slice of cheese between the 2 pot.  Wrap in foil. & bake in oven.  Delicious.  Had them last Thurs & will again this Wed.

Did you notice Everett Borg died.  Didn't give his age but I think he was at Upsala College when Frank C. was.

Saturday, November 13, 1999

This is the last sheet of paper on this pad so it will be a mixed paper letter.

Just walked & mailed 2 bills in the 5th Ave box.  It's cloudy but still mild.  They keep saying colder weather is on the way but it doesn't last.  I'm not complaining tho.  Let it be nice thru the holidays.

The Schwan man comes every other Thurs. & last Thurs. he said he'd come on Wed. as the Thurs. was Thanksgiving.  I have a turkey in the freezer but it still doesn't seem possible the holidays are getting so close.

Still, both Barb & I have a good start on our Christmas shopping.  In fact, Barb is just about finished.  Soon a pkg. will be on the way with birthday presents.

I don't think I could worship every Sun. at the Hosanna Church.  I, too, would miss the liturgical service & sacraments.  Altho, when a child & saw the communion elements on the altar I knew it would be a longer service & wished I could go home after Sun./ School.  I couldn't take that type of music Sun. after Sun.  But each to his own, or hers!

Is Signe in a nursing home?  I wonder if the sisters know as Ruth always calls me to tell of any operations, etc.

This A.M. I made a coffee cake & a white (box) layer cake.  Dale likes an A.M. snack so it's either rolls or coffee cake.  And I love to bake so it's no problem.  Keeps me young!  Ha, ha.

Lar & Torey came over last nite.  Kim was at a school dance & Lar forgot the USA Today papers I save for him.  Torey loves to come to Grandma's as he gets cheese, ice cream & 2 sugar cookies.  He expects it & makes his wants known if I'm too slow in getting them.

I'm a little surprised it's taking so long to get Andy fitted for glasses.  Maybe he's not looking forward to wearing glasses even if it helps him to see the blackboard better.

Rose Seeley isn't able to be in church very often due uto her back.  I miss seeing her & it will be strange not seeing Gen Brader up front on the left hand side of the sanctuary.

Now it's Sun. aft. & I just returned from a walk overtown to CVS for some bargains they offered.  It was still nice & the weather is suppose to change to colder weather.  Very windy, tho.

Betty Gusfatson Mailhot wants me to make my Danish rolls for a party she's having Dec. 11  I'd rather not but it's hard to say no so I'll do it.   It's not going to be a habit, tho.  I'll have to make 2 batches.  Tues. Betty Casey wants me to go out to lunch - I say yes.  Mon. we hope to go to Jamestown in the aft. if the predicted snow flurries are few.  (We went).

Did you notice Nascar is going to NBC & Fox?  It's a popular sport & growing.  It's popular in this house.

The Bills are playing Miami & are ahead so far.  The Browns scored first against the Steelers.

The Wisc/Iowa game was great for you fans.  I enjoyed it too & seeing Dayne play & honored.  Now Penn State was another story.

I have my Christmas cards & want to get started addressing them....sometime soon.

I asked Kim if Barb Jacobs would like to come for Thanksgiving.  Kim asked her & she might come.  One friend has cancer so she won't be with her.  2 others talked about going to Holiday Inn.  If that doesn't happen she'll come.  No one wants to be alone on a holiday.

Time for a coffee break.

Tues. A.M.  Will bring this to a close & mail it before I start my "chores".  Betty called & can't make it for llunch today.  Now I don't have to rush to get those "chores" completed.  Heavy frost overnite.

October 10, 1999

Thanks for the pictures of the boys.  They are growing up so fast.  I see a lot of changes.

In church today, we had a substitute organist.  She was good, bro't out the power of the organ & we aren't used to that so some people didn't like it.  She outpowered the pastor & he has a loud voice.

Fri. Barb & I went to Jamestown & got some good buys, so it was enjoyable.  We ate at the Red Lobster.  I tried cat fish for the first time & it was delicious.

Thurs. Betty Casey & I went to lunch at Penn Laurel.  I had homemade chicken soup & it was really homemade.  So good.  She said Mike called from Wi. last week & they have snow.  They are in the western part of the state.

Gen & Ed celebrate their 45th anniversary Oct 23rd.  Hope they reach 50.  Both have a few problems.

It cleared up today - was suppose to rain.  Dale is afraid the Nascar race will be postponed & on the weather map it shows rain all across (up & down) the coast line.

What about those Mets.  They won even with Mike P. on the bench & his replacement got the winning home run.  On to Atlanta.  They must remember to be careful of Chipper Jones & the one who follows him or they will kill the Mets.  It's been exciting anyway it ends.  A Subway series would be interesting as I'm sure the Yankees will make it, altho I'd root for Cleveland.

I have a pot roast in the crockpot & it smells good.  Finally a change from chicken  but sometimes Barb doesn't want beef, unless it's steak.

Dale's getting the Blazer transmission remade.  His friend in Frewsburg is doing it & he told  Dale it was good as one part was very thin & would have caused trouble in the winter.

Our flowers are still blooming.  No real frost yet.  We took green tomatoes in & put them in paper bags & then they will ripen.

We're watching Buffalo vs. Pittsburgh & Buffalo is doing good.  Smile for Barb but not for Dale.

In Jamestown we went to Walmart & I found a platter in my everyday Corelle pattern.  They aren't that easy to find & I was so pleased to get it.

I'm still waiting for Christmas ideas.  I think Pokemon are an impossibility.  Cards at least.  I've seen books, posters but no cards.  Except for the ad in the paper & they wanted $550.00 for over 400 cards.  It's a scam!!

Need to clean up lunch dishes.

Betty Gusfatson Mailhot asked me if I'd make 2 doz. of my Danish rolls for a brunch she's having in Dec.  I didn't say yes yet & I don't know if I want to get into baking for others.  Not worth it.

Here it is Wed. & I haven't finished this letter so it will be late.

Today I see the dentist & I hope it is just a one trip experience.

Mildred Wilson died - I worked with her at Beaty & Lar did work for her so Lar & I went to the funeral home.  She was 88 & outlived her husband.

The eating area lock would really bother you, Paul, as it has gotten noisy.  Think it needs a new battery.

Get my hair done on Thurs. this week as Sheila is taking a long weekend to visit her girlfriend in N.W. Wi. to see their new baby.  A few months old now.  She is from Minn. but worked in Warren a few years but returned to the Midwest as her mother isn't well.

This is Dale's early week & I've made applesauce & a banana coffee cake - in a bundt pan with streusel instead of the loaf pan.  It's good.

So it's time to make my bed & get a shower.

P.S.  Saw the dentist - Dr. Walters - he said he wishes his Dad could get around as well as I do.  We're the same age.  My lower left in the back have been sore at times so he took an xray & something is wrong so I have to go back on Mon aft. at 1 pm.  More fun - I like Dr. Walters for a dentist.

Monday, October 3, 1999

It's a cloudy, cool day but it didn't stop me from doing my work.  The first of the week I have more energy but it lags toward the end of the week.

Nancy, Kim's friend is not a good housekeeper & her mother-in-law is just the opposite.  This week her in-laws are coming so she asked Barb to clean 3 hours on Wed.  Her regular cleaning person & her friend will clean 2 days.  Nancy said her mother-in-law would know Nancy didn't do it & it will cost her over $100.00 to get things in order.  She has 4 daughters but they haven't been trained to pick up after themselves & are no help to clean a little.

Betty Casey wants me to go out to lunch tomorrow - Tues.

The CVS new store is going up fast.  The store on 2nd Ave. will close on Nov. 1st.  Sounds like they want to be opened before the holidays.

Soon lunch time but I wanted to get a start.  My book is so book it is hard to put it down.  Got 3 books on Sat.  Read one on Sat, another on Sun - both easy reading & started on the 3rd.  This is a longer book & I can't skip over parts of it as in some books.  If they're too "wordy" or such.

Now it's Tues A.M.  What about those Mets.  Nobody (except me & a few others) wanted them to win.  It was a great game.  But they play Arizona & that will be a battle, esp. when Johnson is their starter.  Oh well, at least they got to the playoffs.  Some expect Ariz. t5o be the N. L. winner.  I'll root for them if it comes to that.

Barb likes to sleep in - I like to get my work done in the morning.  At 8:30 I was cleaning my room - dusting so no noise yet.  She didn't get up so I went downstairs & vacuumed & made noise.  Still not up so I went upstairs & started to clean the bathroom.  Finally up & went downstairs.  It's 9:30 so I guess she isn't working today.  Bert doesn't come home til the 16th so I guess Barb thinks she can take time off.  Wonder if Barb could ever hold a "regular" job.  But I'm not changing my cleaning times after all these years.  Just a little chance to get it off my chest.  Don't care to make waves.

I'm not going out to lunch until Thurs.  Betty called to change it.  Better for me, too.

In Sept. I completely forgot LCW.  Told Viola Seaquist I'd be there.  Then I remembered the Mets were on so I stayed home.  They were going to tie a quilt & only so many can do that.

You must have used your new furnace by now.  How's it going.

Dale is looking to the future & thinking about finding a house with a 2-car garage so he'll have a place to work on cars.  Also a house that needed to be updated.  He's talked to Larry about it.  That would be good for Dale & a good investment.  I'm sure he could get a loan & has money saved.

I just have to sign the dded & it will belong to you four "kids".  I'm glad that's over & it's the last thing to be done.  Everything is in order.

Did you notice in the Wrrn. paper Warren Hi has a good girls' cross country team.  One of Wrrn's girls always comes in first & Benson's (Mt. Jewett) granddaughter comes in 2nd.  Both are seniors so there is no hope for Bensons to see a winner.  They go to Kane Hi.

It's 10 A.M. &  I need to get a shower & cleaned up.

Bills are winning - Barb is happy.

Steelers are losing - Dale unhappy.

That's how it goes in sports.

Sunday, August 1, 1999

The Mets finally beat the Cubs in 13 innings & what an exciting & frustrating time.  Both teams used most of their players & it seemed neither team wanted to win.

It's finally cooling off.  Just turned off the A.C. & opened doors & windows.  Nice breeze.

Today at 4 pm Lar & Kim were entertaining the Crary Home residents at camp.  Grilling hamburgers, having corn, etc.  Fri. Lar made the final payment on the Miata.

If I read your letter correctly you leave on Thurs. for La.  And you should have enjoyed a visit from Tony & family.  Friendships are so nice to keep up & a visit is even nicer.  And you have another one to look forward to.

Gen called the other nite & they've made good use of the pool during the hot spell.  They have blueberry plants & are enjoying the berries & blueberry pie.

Aunt Esther was 100 in June & is bedridden & they have a tube to feed her.  Warren (cousin) is trying to get her off the tube but it takes time, etc.  He must have power of attorney but it requires permission so it takes time.  A living will is best.

To see our downtown area today is sure different from what you saw on the internet.  I think the Busy Bee has changed hands & Lar thinks the Texas lunch is still there but I think there is a new owner also.  A popular place to eat here is the Plaza.  It is really busy & noisy during the lunch hour.  Good food.

Aug 7.

Now it's Sat. nite & I'm watching the Mets beat L.A.  The Mets are really hot now & I love it.  [They were ahead, but lost.]

It has cooled off a lot & it is so enjoyable, especially sitting on the front porch.  Good for baking & I've made cookies & rolls.

Mon. the 9th, Barb, Kim & I are going to Jamestown for lunch & shopping.

Got your letter today.  Sounds like Tony & family's visit was a great success.

I'll be anxious to hear all about your trip to La.

When does football practice start for Andy.  What will Eddie be doing - probably soccer.  How's his bike riding coming.

Reread the letter & realized I've neglected to finish it sooner.  Last Tues. Betty Casey & I went to lunch.  Every booth & table was in use at the Plaza so we went to Penn Laurel & had a nice lunch.  Much quieter there & more class.

We have the railing up on the front porch steps.  It looks nice I think, but it didn't satisfy Barb.  It is narrower as it was fastened to the sidewalk rather than the steps.  Hard to explain but we have a railing now that's the main thing.  Don't want anyone falling or losing their balance.

Now it's Sun. aft. the 8th & I'll get this finished.  Since church is at 9:30 for the summer I can read the Buff. paper before lunch.  I'm sending 2 articles I think might interest you.  One on Frank Lloyd Wright's window displays in Buff.  And the one by an intern Dr. who has an article monthly & I fins them very interesting.  May you will - interesting story on "smells".

The Mets didn't have it last nite & lost to L.A.  Better luck this aft.  They come on - oops they are already on & I missed the first 10 min - how could I do that, esp. when I was watching the "enemy"!!!

Barb finished the outside door in the little room upstairs.  Now she's working on preparing the tin roof for painting.

Betty Casey told me her son Mike decided to go to college 20 years after high school.  Had served in Vietnam so he got the G.I. Bill & he graduated with honors from one of the U.W. schools.  He lives in Eau Claire.  I think he's in some kind of youth work.  I'm sure you remember him.

School starts here the 31st.  When do the boys go back to school.  Is Andy getting excited about going to a new school.  Will Eddie be coming home instead of after school - can't think of the correct term, but you know what I mean - I hope.

Better end this.
