Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

The Mets came on at 8 pm & they are at St. Louis. I washed my face, etc. so I can stay up until 10:30 & then go to bed.
I'm enclosing Chiodo's menu. We really enjoyed our dinners. Barb especially. It was a special for Mother's Day he doesn't have on the menu very often. Usually she has some complaint about the food. Not this time. Dale & I had sandwiches with my pork leftover -- huge servings -- & it was good. Dale really liked it. He said his ribs had a "woodsy" taste he didn't like that much. Kim tasted Lar's & really like it & she's not a big meat eater. We were all satisfied -- except. There was a Pentecostal group having dinner & they had a 20 min or so musical presentation, guitar, elec. which they didn't need in a small area. It was hard to talk above the music. Then they had testimonies abut how hey came to fat. They should have chosen a private dining area or had it catered. I'm surprised they chose a place that serves alcohol but things can't be perfect.
Am also enclosing a picture of the '56 flood. Barb tho't you'd be interested in seeing it. Someone must have given it to Dad. Before the dam was built.
Called Millie last nite -- she is not I ha flooded area just a lot of rain.
Linda is in Chicago this week. (I didn't realize he retired 3 years ago.) Last Sun A.M. when she got back from breakfast there was a note saying call your neighbor. She couldn't imagine why. She found out 6 cars in her neighborhood sitting in the driveways were damaged -- windows broken, scratches, etc. She has a garage but doesn't use it in the summer. Bet she wishes she did now. It will be repaired.
Noticed in the USA Today state news that your ex friend Chuck Chvala now has "home detention as part of his 9 month sentence". It is a sad situation.
My puzzle is slowly coming together. I like this one & will finish it. Might take 2-3 weeks but who is in a rush.
Dale gave me an impatiens hanging plant & yours & his are on the front of the porch facing n. yard & then decided on the porch facing E. Hope I have my directions straight. The flowers look so nice.
You asked if I could find the church & parsonage on the G. F. map you sent. I'm not sure I can.
Fri. Just got back from getting my hair done.
Barb said Scott showed her some porn pictures & a bad poem he got on his computer. She told Lynn & when Lynn confronted him he showed a stick figure instead of the real thing. So Barb had a talk with Scott & he got rid of the porn. He is smart enough to find that but not smart when it comes to studying. He doesn't want to be a nerd. Crazy kids. Scott can't keep things to himself (which is good) & tells Barb instead of his parents. He doesn't want to get yelled at.
Mets vs. Yankees at Shea this weekend. Hope the Mets hitters show up for these games. All are on TV. N.Y., Fox, & ESPN.
All is well.

Thurs. has become my letter writing day. Have Valentines ready to send to Millie & Gen & the boys. But I got dinner in the crockpot first. Now it's coffee time & my letter to you folks. Where to begin.
Super Sunday, of course, & the Steelers win. but I was on "pins & needles" til the end of the game. Don't remember being like that in the 70s when the Steelers won> I was younger then & the Steelers had more established stars. But they won! It was exciting.
Dale had to go to school yesterday. Up at 4:00 & off at 5:30 A.M. & home safe & sound by 7 pm.
I've been busy (for an old lady) this week. Mon. was a bright, sunny day & it inspired me. After making Dale's bed with clean sheets & starting the laundry, I set Danish rolls. Then decided to set dinner rolls & also made choc. chip cookies to use the oven while heated. So by early aft. the kitchen was cleaned up. I sat awhile & then it was supper time.
Tues. A.M. I baked my Danish -- whoops, I made the cookies Tues A.M.
Wed. I prepared for Lar & Kim's coming over. Made a carrot cake using the recipe from Bon Appetit & I really liked how it came out. Nice & Light & tasty. It calls for coconut but I left it out.
Dale got a letter from Rick Schommer. Remember he & his wife are in Honduras with the Mercy Ships. They are learning Spanish, working with health education, having Bible studies, etc. Dale said he never pictured Rick in a situation like this. People change & that is good. They'll be a year over there. It is interesting to hear of their experiences. Dale gave me the letter to read. Maybe I'll write to them -- don't think Dale will. He might surprise me!
Scott didn't pass Health because he didn't hand in homework papers. His other subjects showed improvement. Ii give the credit to Barb for working with him esp. when he doesn't want to do homework or even cares if it gets done.
We're having Jan. weather now but the nice part is the days are longer with more light in the A.M. & P.M. That helps a lot.
I finished my jigsaw puzzle with Barb's help. It is a very pretty scene. Had to look on the floor & between the cushions to find missing pieces. All were found. Most likely I'll start another one.
In the USA Today I've been reading about the Blackberry controversy. At least I know a little about what they're talking about -- in your letters you mentioned Joanna's Blackberry & it's not a fruit!
Last Mon.l was a snow day. We got about 5" but the outer edges of the county got more & there was a cold wind & icy streets.
We didn't go grocery shopping per usual. I really didn't need that much so Barb picked up the necessities at BiLo on Tues. I fix a lunch for Dale when he goes to school & needed meat. They like thuringer & BiLo has the best. It was a favorite growing up at home.
Almost forgot. Both Dale & Lar were ahead of you in the prostate testing. Both had it already. It was interesting to read the results of your testing. Do you mind going to a woman Dr. I've never had a woman Dr. Not that many to choose from when I started regular appts, if any. That was 25 years ago.
Both of Kim's niece & nephew graduate this next June. Kim hoped to go to their
It is soon lunch time so I'll close. I knew I made 2 things on Mon but couldn't remember. In place of the cookies on Mon, I made an apple pie for soup & pie Mon. menu. Today is take it easy Thurs & I'm taking it easy.

Dale decided the van needed new tires so he ordered them thru Shults, got them yesterday & put them on last nite. Barb is happy & so am I with the weather we're having good tires are a necessity. He put them on right after work & Barb was home by 6:15. Dale didn't get home until 7:30 -- he had to put his tools away & clean up. He's the only one willing to clean up -- my extra fussy son.
Yesterday I finally went to the chiropractor & will go again on Thursday. When you're older the adjustments he makes are easier. It's still sore when I have to straighten up but getting better.
Barb said Scott's meds were increased & it makes him better. Nicer personality & he is more willing to do his homework. He's hoping for a real gun for Christmas but Lynn says no to that. Guns & motorcycles are his interests.
This is Dale's late work day so this A.M. I set my sweet rolls & hope they can be ready to bake in awhile. Also have cooky dough chilling. And I'm out of dinner rolls & should make them tomorrow.
This A.M. I wrote 3 notes for cards for Auburn & Bainbridge Island & one for Mont. Also heard from Gene Hasselquist & got his card ready to mail. Still have notes to add to cards for relatives & hope to get them set to go. Just a few words to let them know how we are. Then cards for the Warren area. Have you even started to think about Christmas greetings!!! Time flies, you know.
Thurs. nite Dec 8
Warren Hollertz called & said they are going to Jamestown Mon. the 12th to get Swedish food for Christmas. Would I want to go along. Told him about my sore back but he talked me into going. But my back is still sore & stiff so I'm going to have to call & say I can't. Can't take the riding as Warren goes around Lake Chautauqua from west to east. Stops at a Swedish store that sells Swedish shirts, etc. & then to the grocery store. And they spend quite a bit of time looking around. (Can't finding the word I meant to use in the small dictionary.) And standing around a lot tires me so it's better to stay home.
We have old strings of light & Barb put a set around the mantle & it looks nice. Then she put another set in the dining room by the windows & we like how that looks.
Dec. 9 Fri. AM
Just got back from having my hair done. Started a load of wash; then a cup of coffee to warm me up. It is cold & blowing outside. The weatherman says we are getting Jan. weather early this year.
My back is still sore but improving, I hope. Hope to start wrapping gifts today.
Made a recipe of Andes mint choc. cookies but only baked 2 doz. Froze the rest of the dough for later baking. It seems I'm the only one eating them -- don't ask how many are left! Just a few. They are so good with a cup of coffee.
Kim was telling about 2 of her 7th grade boys. They weren't behaving during a basketball game so finally Kim made them sit on the bleachers & that meant writing them up. During this time, they were continually using the "f" word. One kid started to cry & said "My dad will kill me." Parents are notified when written up. The next day the kid apologized to Kim; call the kids to come & did the same to the kids. Then the father comes in & asked if his son apologized sincerely & she said yes. "Did he apologize to the class as well?" "Yes," Kim replied, Kim thanked him for his support -- the first time that ever happened to her. Kim says he is a good kid but a follower & will do what the others do, even when he knows better. Kim said the father didn't call the son by his first name, but said Mr. last name. Wonder if he is too much of a disciplinarian -- more fear than love, and that is sad.
I'd better get busy.
Sat A.M. the 10
It's 8:20 & no paper yet. I have a coffee cake in the oven & it smells good.
Last Sun. the pastor announced the Christmas services. Christmas Eve 8 pm & Christmas A.M. at 10 o'clock. Then she said be sure to come as that is the only time we'll sing the carols. There is so much emphasis on Advent, usually 4 Sun. & no carols can be sung & then Christmas comes & goes with little celebration. I prefer the old way -- I thought the birth of Christ was the important subject. Who am I to say.
When getting the Christmas ornaments I could never find the stocking holders. This year Barb looked & brought down the ornaments & lo & behold, she found the stocking holders missing for 2 years. They add so much. Barb is going to the post office -- till next time.

Ray Danielson preached in our church today & last Sun. Next Sun. he preaches at Frost Luth & the last Sun. at St. John's. I asked Eleanor what is happening at 1st Luth as Ray preaches there a lot. It's over a year since their pastor left. Guess they're too fussy. One pastor said he would come but his wife got a new job & refused to leave. Guess her will was stronger than God's Will! How times have changed.
Last Fri. aft. Barb was at Lynn's & Lynn & Marissa had a big fight & both said words they will regret. Marissa called Lynn a big fat bitch & Lynn told her to get out. She wasn't suppose to take the car but she left in the car. Both Barb & I wonder if she went home. Went to a friend who has her own apt. And she is back with the boyfriend nobody likes. I hope they work it out. Next year Marissa wants to transfer to a college away from Warren. I hope she can get out of Warren. Barb wasn't to tell anyone but I'll keep my mouth shut & you are too far away to spread the gossip.
Barb & I watched Buffalo beat St. Louis this aft. Buff. put the rookie QB in after the other QB got hurt & he did a great job. He started out in the beginning but made mistakes. It was a little hard on this ego to sit but he realized he still had a lot to learn. He is the AB of Buff. future. He has been interviewed on 5 pm TV & looks like a nice guy. I hope he does well.
I started another puzzle -- one of pumpkins in a field. I need to keep my hands busy so I won't snack. Then the scale moves up & I don't like that.
No school tomorrow for students. Barb & I plan to go out for lunch, do some errands & get groceries.
Tues p.m.
The moon is beautiful tonite. It has been a cloudy day but late aft. it cleared up so we can see a full moon.
I dropped a hook behind the stove & when Dale went to look for it, he saw a lot of dust. He moved the stove out, found the hook & cleaned up the accumulation of dust, etc.
Back to Marissa -- she was home for dinner last Fri. Nothing was said -- both acted as if nothing happened. The Dr. will increase Scott's dosage of his medication. He can't have chocolate after 5 pm. It is at nite when he gets really hyper.
Last night House Hunter was in Montreal & it was interesting. Wife was pregnant & had the baby before the house deal. They spoke English but I think they were speaking French to the baby. It will be bilingual.
I got the turkey yesterday & most of the rest of the menu. It was a big order & lots to carry in & put away.
I made a meatloaf for supper last nite, using a new recipe. It was good so I'd better not misplace the recipe. Made scalloped potatoes & green beans. My favorite meal among others.
Barb just got a call from a friend & she told her that Max Yosten was shot & killed by her boyfriend. In N. Carolina. Jeff got divorced & followed his ex-wife to St. Louis so he can see his 2 daughters; Karen's husband died suddenly & now Max. Poor Pete & Sylvia. They weren't' married but lived together. You never think that will happen to someone you know. I'm sure more will be in the newspaper.
The news about Max knocked me for a loop & any ideas to put down on paper have evaporated.
Thurs A.m. the 17th. Half of the month is gone already.
Didn't know what to make for dessert so I made a favorite of mine. Graham cracker pie. Van. cream filling & meringue baked to a beautiful light golden. Looks delicious & it is. I scraped the pan I made the filling in. Never too old to lick a pan!
Scott isn't suppose to have any foods with MSG & he is mad. All his favorite foods contain MSG.
Lynn went online & got news about Max's death. She called 911 herself. "I've been shot, I'm dying." Such sad words. She died on the way to the hospital. With the life she lived & she lived a full one, maybe it was her fate to die like this. When they drank they fought. Nothing has been in the paper -- funeral notice, etc.
Scott told Barb he doesn't know why he has to go to school. His future will be with motorcycles & "I don't need school for that." I remember Dave Blair's mom being concerned because of some of the crazy ideas Dave had for a future. Guess all kids go through that stage. I can't remember any ideas you kids had. But I remember being shocked when Barb came home & said she had signed up to go in the Navy. Later she said she did that because of something that Max did to her.
She recently had some slides she took in Italy made into snapshots. She enjoyed her time in Italy so I don't think she ever regretted her rash plan. We never even had a glimmer of what she was going to do. I know her 1st year at Robert Morris was related to partying & not much learning.
Hamburg, N.Y. has had 10" of now & it will continue all day. Snow is in the forecast for us but as of 11:15 AM, it is clear but cold. It was 25 when I put the garbage on the curb.
Every Fri. Sheila asks me, "What's new with you?" & I always answer "Nothing special". Which is fine with me. I can keep busy & I can loaf, & do a little of each. But I'm satisfied with my life & that's all that matters. I'm just happy I had 4 wonderful children & they fill my life with joy. Plus JoAnna, Kim, Andy & Ed. You all fill my life with happiness. And I love your letters.
With that I'll end this letter.

Trick or treating started at 6 pm & by 7 we turned out the light. The candy was gone.
Was up at 5 A.M. & as soon as Dale went to work (7AM) I finished rolls I started on Sun. Sheila & Sue always come by to show us their get-up. They each got 5 rolls, Scott got 4, I ate one & 5 were left. So I walked over to church & gave them to our pastor. Her husband loves them. Then I did my Mon. chores so I'd be ready for Sheila & Sue. I waited all aft. & they didn't come. Mon is our day to get groceries so when Barb came home a little after 4 we left to get groceries. When we (Dale & I) were eating Sheila & Sue came. Right into the kitchen & it was a mess with pans etc. around. Barb had eaten earlier as she had volunteered to answer the door. T hey won $150.000 for prizes for their costume. They love Halloween & are very clever in their ideas.
Now I'm watching TV & relaxing.
The puzzle I chose is a brown building against white snow & tree branches. Not much color. Even Barb doubts my choice. It is far from easy to put together & I wonk I wont' get it done. It was a bad choice!
Frank, across the st, sold his house & has to be out in 3 weeks. He's sorry he has to leave the neighborhood as he has enjoyed living here. He's very friendly whereas we never see the new neighbors, (Carey's house). He'll still be in Warren in a small apt. for the time being.
Maybe you'll see that Ethel Johnson died. Chris's mother. She was 90 last spring & was at the Rouse Home.
I'm watching Psychic Detective. A murder takes place in Greenfield, Mass. before Halloween. Greenfield isn't that far from Spfld.
Wed. aft.
Barb was telling me that Scott was doing thru his mother's jewelry to see if he could find something to give to a girl. Lynn said "no way" is he to give away any of her jewelry. These kids have to "go steady" with someone to be a "jock".
We gave up on the brown & white puzzle, so I'm working on an old one with lots of color.
Tonite I'm having pork chops, succotash, rice, applesauce & banana cream pie. Sounds good to me.
We're enjoying Indian summer & it is so nice.
I ordered Barb's Christmas present, a Danskin toning system, from Penney's. Her choice. And a sweater set for me.
BiLo had Food Club flour, Heinz ketchup, Swanson's broths, each 5 for $5.00. I always get cheese there & our favorite lunch meat, Sahlens ham, was on sale.
Yesterday UPS came to the door with a large envelope for Dale. Good he was home as the Co. wanted proof. Had to see his driver's license. It was a check for $250.00 to buy tools thru their distributor. Trouble is, one hasn't called at Shutls for some time & Dale knows what he's like. He thinks they might have a catalogue he could order form.
We had a nice dinner & visit with Lar & Kim. I can't get any Christmas gift ideas from Kim.
The other A.M. I happened to look out the kitchen. It was 5:30 A.M. & I saw a couple out walking. It reminded me of you two walking in the early A.M.
I'm enjoying putting pieces of the puzzle together. Much nicer than staring at the pieces to see if I can find some that go together.
The yawns are beginning to tell me it is bedtime. When it gets close to 10 pm I'm ready for bed esp. Dale's early week. So I will say good night.

I thought it would be nice to go out to eat tonite, being it is Dale's last nite of vacation. It didn't work out. I gave Dale a choice of leftover Swiss steak from Wed nite or chicken & rice form Thurs nite. Or spaghetti. He chose the chicken-rice, I had the Sw steak & Barb fixed herself a Mexican meal. So I still didn't have to fix a meal, just a salad. We've been watching the President's Cup golf between U.S. players & international players. Very interesting. Tied at 11-11. Partners against partners & if they win they get 1 point. Fun to watch.
I guess library work can be interesting when some "nut" stats in on your library. How could she pass a mental test? How come she is in Wi. when she had problems in Cal. Is she from Wi?
I'm watching the Mich-Wis game. Go Wisconsin!
Will Andy be going to the homecoming dance this year.
You mentioned Elsa Redding's picture being in the paper a lot. Remember Nelson & Mary Helen Johnson from church. She is their daughter & she had a twin brother. She is divorced from her husband -- they have a couple of children, grown children.
I've also been glued to the Weather Channel watching Rita hit Texas.
Can you believe that it will be Oct. by the end of next week. Time to go to the bank again for monthly expenses.
Sept 27 - Tues.
Yesterday it rained most of the day. 1.8" & we got a little water in the basement. We got groceries this A.M. & then went to the Mall for a few things. I get my paper goods at the Dollar Store, then to look around Big Lots, to KMart & home. It is Dale's late day so I fix a bigger lunch. Usually pancakes, sausage & eggs. His dessert is yogurt. And a snack for later.
In the aft. I put some summer clothes in the attic & took winter or fall clothes down to my room.
On Discovery Health Channel, I just watched emergency ambulance & it was in New York City & it was very interesting. No one stops for the siren. Must be an interesting job.
Barb helps Scott with his homework. They are working on the transitive & intransitive. He has to find out which sentences are transitive or intransitive. Barb tries to explain it to me & I'm glad I'm an old lady & don't have to go thru that. Scott will put anything down just to get it finished. Same in math so she checks his homework to make sure he knows what he is doing. If he gets thru school it will be because of Barb working with him. Bob & Lynn are too tired at nite to help him. You need a lot of patience working with Scott.
We watch the Weather Channel a lot & get to know the announcers. Jim Cantori is in when there are hurricanes, blizzards, etc. He has always worn a wedding ring. I was surprised when Dale mentioned "Jim C isn't wearing a wedding ring anymore." I didn't think he'd notice anything like that.
Fri A.M. the 30th
Brr, it's cold this A.M. 39. It is suppose to warm up so I didn't turn the heat on. So far the gas bill hasn't gone up.
Kim gets a little disgusted with Betsy Moran. She complains a lot. Said she'll have to keep the heat at 58. Her husband works at United & he plans to retire in a year. His car & gas are provided by United so Kim said wait til you husband is retired. No more free car & gas & with gas as high as it is, that will be a shocker. Betsy has an inherited income which must be good, as that is what bro. Jim lives on plus no children, a husband with a good job, etc. etc. One of the teachers they walk with lives from paycheck to paycheck, paying for a house. Some people are never happy. Betsy hates the house they live in -- it was his parents' home. But they remodeled & Kim says it is a lovely home.
We're going to the bank, CVS, etc. after I get my hair done. Until next time.
P.S. Will comment on the Rockford epistle next letter. It is wonderful. Will you share it with cousins? Bet they like to read it.

Not Ryberg's house.
Another of the homes for sale on East Third Ave.
After church I sat on the porch reading the Sun. paper. The 2nd Sun. t he weather has been accommodating.
Now I'm watching the Braves at Milwaukee. You know whom I rooting against! The Mets come on at 4:05.
Talked to Denise Johnson today & she sends greetings. She wasn't so negative so maybe things are better for her.
Do you remember Harriet Johnson? (Carlson, her married name.) Anyway they had one son & they kept him close to them. Never learned to drive, etc. Both parents died. Now he has a girlfriend & she is teaching him to drive. There is always hope.
Ryberg's house went up for sale this past week. That makes 4 homes for sale in our area & there could be a 5th if Ed Africa would decide to stay here or go back to Arizona.
Barb is riding her bike & Dale is out in the sun.
Starting the 30th, no tax on clothing in New York, so we'll be going to the Mall one day. Hope I can find something. In church today, Betty Casey said "it's impossible to find a dress." I agree, that's why I wear slacks a lot.
I've been watching the Weather Channel a lot because of the hurricane. Glad I don't live there.
Wed. Last day of Aug!
Yesterday we went to Lakewood to take advantage of N.Y.'s tax free week on clothing. What did I get? NOTHING. It is very hard to shop when you are an old lady! I was looking for a suit. Tried one on at our Bon Ton but I didn't like the fit & the sleeves are too long. Barb said I'll have to try the catalogues we get. We just shopped at Wegman's for groceries. I was very disappointed.
We've been getting rain from Katrina but not in amounts predicted -- 2"-4". Still the grass is getting greener. Dale hasn't had to mow much in July & Aug.
I clean the bathroom today but Barb isn't up yet. My duties are get meals, wash, clean bathroom & my room, change Dale & my sheets, iron (every other week or so), wash kit. floor & dust. Baking isn't a chore -- that's fun. So I have spare time to watch TV & take things easy. I watched a lot of the Weather Channel when Katrina was at its height. What a loss & I feel for all those people. An elderly relative from Biloxi is staying at Lake Chautauqua with Lynn's parents who came for the summer. They have a home in Fla. It must be terrible with no electricity & the humid heat, plus the rest. I wondered if a baby would be born during the storm & this A.M.'s paper showed a newborn & mother in Miss. But it was in yesterday's USA Today which I just read this A.M. When I was home Tues. a good book kept me reading. The last of the 5 library books.
Scott doesn't read & understand what he reads. Too impatient to be still. So he is in a special reading class & that bothers him. Most of the encouragement he gets comes from Barb. Marissa yells at him all the time & Lynn & Bob don't take time to help him in reading. It's all up to Barb.
Fri A.M. Sept. 2
Will bring this to a close as after I get my hair done, we will go to CVS & the Mall. Now I mail letters at the Mall because the mailbox is by the front entrance.
Lar & Kim are fine. School is OK. Kim is able to drive with 3 other teachers. With gas high she is glad this happened. I'm sure they are also.
A beautiful weekend ahead. Sun & not too hot.
Made a pumpkin pie for dessert last nite. Fall is on the way.

Last nite I was set at 7:10 p, to watch the Mets vs. LA-A interleague play. There was a rain delay of about an hour or so. At 11 pm I went to bed not knowing the outcome. Was I ever surprised this A.M. when I turned to ESPN2 & saw the Mets won 5-3. I missed the exciting ending. But I saw it today when they reviewed it before today's game -- and the Mets lost this aft.
Noticed that Atlanta lost 11-5 so that helped ease the pain. Pittsburgh also lost in the 13th inning. I've been watching their games during the week & they are really improving. and their announcers are more laid back & don't talk all the time so I like them.
We're really had a week of hut humid weather. We started 9:30 services but it was still warm so I had enough. When I got home I turned on the A.C. & closed the windows. It has been very comfortable. It is suppose to cool off by Wed. -- just in time for me to do something.
I can see you are getting ready for your party working outside so the yard looks nice. And having the rugs cleaned so the inside looks nice. It will be a busy several weeks for you folks.
I have to correct myself. Scott did go to school last Fri. Lynn said he had to. Lynn's mother gave Barb a puzzle she got for the lake but it was too hard & they gave up. It was very hard but Barb finished it. I know I never could have done it. Too many similar pieces in shapes & colors.
In politics, Buffalo is really having money problems. They were audited by the state & if they don't get a workable budget by Tues. the 14th a state control board will take over & have the power to control the money. They have a high deficit. They cut taxes but not the spending. It is a mess & changes will be coming. They lost their credit rating. Some say no increase in taxes, others say we must have one to get out of this mess. I look forward to WGRZ 5 pm news.
Barb told me Scott had the choice of working with a tutor, most likely a teacher, or with Barb. He chose Barb. They still have to make a schedule, etc. Lynn wants to take Scott off his meds this summer but Barb said he'll never be able to be still & attentive if she does. He can't be without it if you want to accomplish anything.
Mon A.M.
I just called Gen to wish her a happy birthday. It is hard to have much of a conversation with her. I always ask about her cat. She seems to know it was her birthday but not her age.
I wasn't surprised you use butter to fry your breakfast. I always buy butter when it is on sale & put it in the freezer. I always have butter in the butter dish & use it for Christmas baking. Either Land o Lakes, Quality brand & Wegman's brands. So I use it & olive oil.
This is Dale's early week so I was dressed & put out the glass & pop cans to be collected early. Then I got Dale's sheets, etc. & had a load going before Dale left. Now the 3rd load -- towels -- are in the dryer. Watered my plants on the porch & now I'm taking it easy.
Called Kim to find out when we should celebrate her birthday. It will be this Thurs. Asked about the menu & she would like hamburgers & potato salad. She doesn't eat desserts -- she said: make something Larry likes. Ill make carrot cake & she can blow out the candles. Also tom. lettuce etc. & fruit salad. It is suppose to cool off so I can bake, as I already mentioned!
Barb wants to go to Jamestown Wed, & she'll get ground meat there. I'm not sure if I'll go.
We got our groceries & Barb stopped at Bert's to deliver what she wanted. I saw Kim working outside the carriage house so I walked over for a few moments. Sat. nite the Hospital Guild had a party at Bets field & Lar & Kim always go with Betsy M. & her husband. They had a great time. A large tent, delicious food & dancing. It's a money maker - -you'll read about it when the Wrrn paper arrives. Also last Wed-Sat there was a ribs festival downtown Wrrn. & that always brings out a crowd. Lar & Kim went Wed. nite for ribs.
Holiday Inn has the Sun. A.M. breakfast buffet again so maybe we'll go one Sun. Kim would have gone with us last year if she'd known. But it was a spur of the moment thing when you were here.
Barb went to Jamestown this aft & as she was turning onto Rt. 62 coming home, she was stopped for speeding. She was going 68 M.P.H. She will have a fine to pay.
We finally got some rain after supper & it cooled things off. Finally!
Hatch Patch has strawberries & Barb wants a strawberry pie for Thurs.
Wed the 15th -- 2 pm
I surprised myself today. We awoke to cooler weather so after breakfast I made use of ripe bananas & rolling out & baking a pie shell. Then I cleaned the bathroom, washed towels, & tho't about lunch. B.L.T's. After lunch I looked at the kitchen floor & decided it would look better if I washed it, so I did. And it looks better. Now I'm resting & have only supper to think about.
I'm still finding out about my children. Can't get her first name but Mrs. Jenkins from First Luth. called yesterday. She visits the nursing home & talked to Rose. Rose couldn't remember if Barb was still in the Navy. Mrs. J. said she'd call me & find out. She asked about you -- she remembers you & Rick Nasman went to their Youth Group, (most likely to see Mary Sandblade) I don't remember hearing that.
Thurs. aft. Watching the U.S. Open golf. A hard course. Got my pot. salad & strawberry pie made this A.M.

This aft. I saw the Dr. My blood tests were all good & my blood pressure wsa 130/60 & that is very good for me. It was higher last time in Feb. So I will just keep taking my meds & vitamins.
Did you happen to see the amazing catch Met M. Cameron at R.F. made. I'm sure it was repeated many times. He was running to catch a ball, tripped & fell & put out his hand & the ball dropped right in. A catch he never knew he would make. It would have been a triple for Cruz, Jr. of the Rockies. It was great. Pedro pitched a great game. When he was traded to the Mets I was n't sure about the deal. It seemed he was temperamental, etc. but he fits in great with the Mets so it's nice ot have a good pitcher.
Ask Any how it feels to slide into a base just ahead of the ball. Does he slide feet first or head first. They say feet first is better. The other way fingers or hands could get hurt. Why do pitchers keep fiddling with their caps. Taking them off & on. The only pitch I recognize is the curve ball, maybe fast ball.
Lynn will have a garage sale tomorrow (Sat) & Barb is up there now helping her. Barb folded clothes, etc. to help her during the week. She put masking tape on the articles & Lynn prices them. Having to take me to the Dr. held her up -- that's her job to take me to appointments.
Shults, Wrrn. has added Toyota cards to their selling program. Dale says they don't have enough space for all the cars now, & tools & working area.
Today I saw a spider on the stove -- went for a paper towel to kill it but Dale let it live. He has a thing for spiders. For one summer he had a spider web in the garage & kept it safe & even tried to feed it. I was a big one.
Sat. aft the 4th
This A.M. we went to Sears & before I do anything I'll see if something can be done to our washer. The salesman said they could fix this problem. I thought this would be my last washing machine.
Then we went nto Lawn & Garden as Barb needed more garden stuff.
We ended up at the Mall. The earrings Barb likes were on sale. She got 2 prs. & I got some white earrings. I got some paper supplies at theh 1.00 store. Kim says she gets all her paper supplies & cleaners there. A better buy.
Sun. aft.
While watching the Mets they said there would be a special (paper) on the Mets. So Barb got a N.Y. Times (that was the paper) but it must have been for the local area. But I found the "sun Styles " had a couple of interesting article & wondered if you read them. On p. 11 "A Bad Case of Puppy Love". It was cute. P. 3 "Love Thy Busybody". Another cute one. Stories like you might write.
This aft. I watched Pitts. beat the Braves & Pitts. took the series. They are doing well & I like Pitts announcers. The Mets were rained out Sat. so there is a doubleheader going on now 4 pm. Mets will be on ESPN at 8 pm. Mets are playing San Fran & the Mets are improving.
I see the "George" says the Yankees must improve. If they don't will there be a new mgr? Who cares, not me. Their skid makes me happy.
Our pastor was in church today -- Pastor Ray Forstrum had the service. She made an announcement. The baby is home but they can't have any visitors for 2 weeks & the baby can't go out in a crowd for 2 weeks. s We won't see her until the middle of July. She will be on maternity leave.
Wed. A.M. the 8th
Summer has arrived. There are buds on the rose bushes & the plants Barb planted from seed are coming along fine. I've sat on the front porch & it is nice to watch the birds, etc.
Did Andy notice (as of this A.M.) that Atl. & N.Y.M. are tied for 2nd place with Wn. in 1st place. Looks good to me. (Didn't last long. Fri. the 9th)
School is over on Fri. the 10th. I said to Barb "I bet Scott won't go to school on Fri." Her reply, "Oh no, he'll want to see his friends." I was right (for once) he won't go to school on Fri.
Just wrote a note to Gen to add to her birthday card. She will be 83 on Mon. She won't realize it is her birthday until John tells her. She doesn't know how old she is. It's so sad.
Thanks for the pictures. Andy looks nice in his baseball uniform. When does he start his summer job. What about Ed -- will he get a summer job.
Collins on Conewango have their home up for sale. It's probably getting to be too much for him to keep up. It will be interesting to see if it sells before Frank's does. (Across the st.) Collins keeps his property in top condition. Frank's yard upkeep leaves a lot to be desired.
This A.M. Dale asked me if I heard them painting the crosswalk lines about 1:30 A.M. (not much traffic). He said the machine was so noisy it woke him up & Barb as well. I didn't hear a thing. Am I losing my hearing -- I don't think so -- I was really tired last nite & must have been in the deep sleep cycle.
I see the Mets picked a pitcher in the draft who is suppose to be pretty good. Time will tell. A few years ago, it seems to me they tho't that about Isringhausen & 2 others but they didn't work out as regular pitchers. It seems only to happen for the Braves. Wed. aft. & I'm watching Toronto at the Cubs -- after I watched "As the World Turns" which is getting very exciting. Me & my soaps!
I took the easy way out & got pizza for supper, delivered from Pizza Hut. The one who delivered it used to work at Shults & recognized Dale's car. The Monte Carlo. He said "that's Dale's car & I want it!" More than one would like the car but he's not selling it.

Last week I got a letter from John & it surprised me. Told me about Fe (pronounced Fay) his Philipino girlfriend & sent pictures of their trip to Aruba. John looks very happy. He wears glasses now & in one picture you could be brothers, except he carries more weight & has a fuller face. He took Gen to a day care center but she didn't like it. He is still keeping the farm up & 2 of his buddies help him. He has planted 2000 Christmas trees in back of the house that was his grandparents. It will be several years before they are grown. Gen would have a fit if she knew they were together in Aruba. Now John has freedom & is better off.
I called Millie east Sat. That was the day of the family birthday party. She is feeling fine again. Allan, knowing she had lost her appetite, bro't her chicken soup, turkey soup, spag. & meat balls & chili -- he had made them all. He is 63 & retired. Is pres. of the "Friends of the Library" (they live in Westfield) & has sponsored several parties to make money. One in their backyard & it was a beer tasting party & Allan had made finger food to go with it.
I finally got 3 boxes of Schwans chicken thru Sheila. He said he would stop at the house last Sat. but he didn't. Hope he does sometime.
We went to Erie & I thin kit will be my last trip. Too much walking & I like to stay near Barb so it is hard to shop for what is on my list. Jamestown is better for me. We wish a Target would come in the area somewhere.
I was ironing last week & my iron quit. Dale looked at it & fixed it so I won't need to get a new one.
My 2nd blueberry pie came out better -- the crust around the edge wasn't as thick. I cut it away as I should have done with the 1st one. Now I have to get the cut out in the top crust centered so it looks better. It is a good recipe & taste good.
We are looking forward to tomorrow. Why? Warmer weather & sunshine are on the way! Oh happy day. The furnace has been running to keep us warm when it's in the 30's outside.
The doorbell rang this A.M. & it was the new Schwan man -- they got someone to take the route. He'll come every other Tues.
Sat. nite we are invited to Lar & Kim's camp to celebrate Mother's Day. It should be in the hi 60's, so we can be outside.
We went to the library yesterday & I got 4 books. 2 by Fern Michaels, 1 by Karen Robards, 1 by Mary Baloch.
I got an invitation to Ted & Pat Benson's 50th wedding anniversary party in June. I think it is the 50th of his ordination as well. In June sometime.
Thurs. May 4
Yesterday I decided to try to finish my second book. So at 7 A.M. (Dale's early week) I started reading for an hour. When I looked at the clock it was close to 8:15. I shut the book & did dishes & then got dressed, etc. Read some more & finished the book. Started dinner rolls & finished them after lunch. Baked a pie shell for the banana cream pie I made this A.M. A new recipe I got in the Sun. paper. You fold whipping cream into the custard. It looks good.
Barb was up early yesterday so she could be at Lynn's at 11:30 to help Scott (who didn't go to school) write a book report on Tom Sawyer which is due tomorrow. She had to go to Bert's first. Lynn said she'd see that Scott read the book, but she never did. She tanked Barb many times for helping Scott. I asked her if she will be helping him thru the high school years. They are pushing the kids so they'll do well on the 8th grade tests. My high school subjects must seem like pap in regard to what they learn today.
Yesterday aft. I started the 3rd book & finished it this A.M. No TV last night. I really admire authors who can write books that make one want to read til it's finished. I just wish I could spread my reading time out. One more book to go. I'll have to try to save it for a couple of days.
It warmed up today & was so nice.
Lar tilled the garden for Barb.
Will enclose John's letter & a picture.

The Steelers won yesterday but it was a tough one to watch. We weren't sure until the end. I'm watching Minn. at Philly but the exciting one will be the Colts at N.E. People here are thinking the Steelers will go all the way. I hope so but there is bout in my mind.
I bundled up to go to church this A.M. It was 19 but it wasn't windy. A widow in the congregation has a 300.00 gas bill & can't pay it. So this A.M. the pastor asked for donations to help her, or her gas will be cut off. I just had my regular offering but next Sun./ I'll give some money to help.
Barb suggested we have pizza last nite while watching the game. I ordered it & had made a pumpkin pie for dessert. Had a coupon so got a large pan supreme & had leftovers for lunch.
Both Barb & Dale had headaches yesterday. Dale's was gone by aft. but Barb was in bed most of the day.
The paper announced the Templeton Funeral Home was sold to Peterson Blick. Patterson's up the street owned it but it was never that busy. He will receive payments over the next 10 years & will help part time. Marilyn P. teaches with Kim & I wondered if she'd retire now. (end of school year) Lar didn't know -- I'll ask Kim on Wed. They like to visit their daughters. One teaches on the East Coast & the youngest is a nurse, married & living in Atlanta.
Yesterday's paper showed a picture of the 4 schools to be closed when the new school opens next fall. Article said there is some interest in them. Wonder if Jefferson will stand empty. Nothing ever happened in the East St. School. The parking lot is used for parking -- you pay to use it.
Thurs. we went to Jamestown -- temp in the 60s. A beautiful day. Just wore a blazer. We ate lunch at the Red Lobster & enjoyed it. We stopped -- the name won't come to me -- & the Jamestown telephone book is no help -- at, not Lowe's but the other one to look for shelves for the basement storage. We found what we wanted to fit against the one side of the shower. 2 shelves for Barb's garden supplies; 2 shelves for canned goods, flour, sugar, etc, I buy on sale & don't have room for upstairs. It is nice & strong. The first one Dad got, needed to be attached to something to hold it better. This one was more expensive & stronger. Dale put it together. No school tomorrow so Barb plans to get things in order. A y ear or so ago Dale got a larger set of shelves set up for his stuff. We also have an old bookcase Dad made, down there to store stuff. Have to try to keep it neat. Still take my shower in the basement even tho the temp was low. The heater helps a lot & I prefer to shower there. That was the big purchase. Not the shower, the shelf.
Barb wants to look for a new exercise machine. She mailed Laura's dress to Honolulu & it cost $30.00. Laura has sent 100 dollars for postage & Barb could keep the rest. She said she would buy me a puzzle. Mostly just the green foliage is left to put in the puzzle on the card table. I don't mind doing old puzzles & we have a pile of them.
I've never fixed chicken wings but maybe I'll try on Super Bowl Sun. So I'll copy how you fix yours (in your last letter) only mine won't be so spicy. I'm sure b-b-cue sauce will do fine for us. Already it is the middle of the month so I won't have too long to wait to try this. I'll check recipes for more ideas how to do it. I love looking at recipes.
Wed. the 19th already
Mon. Dale picked up a tire the wrong way & his back is hurting, says he feels like an old man. He plans to call the chiropractor today for an appt. Jan. hasn't been a good month for him.
You can be glad you only have 2 sons when it comes to buying shoes. And that you have a good income.
Barb has her 2 shelves finished in the basement. I'm in no hurry to work in a cold basement. She's in a hurry so she might fill them in & if I don't like it, I can rearrange to my satisfaction. Barb wants to get a new exerciser, as I wrote already.
Martin Luther King day the kids had to go to school to make up a snow day. Scott stayed home -- he didn't know it was a make-up day. So he says & both Barb & Lynn stand up for him. They push the ADHD thing to the limit. To me he's just a shrewd kid & will do anything to get his way.
We finished the puzzle with no missing pieces. Barb got me another one. Yesterday we went to the library before getting groceries. I got 3 books & a paperback. The latter is "Dawn in Eclipse Bay" by Jayne Ann Krentz. It is enjoyable reading. Also "The Widows Club" by Dorothy Cannell. Don't think I've read her books. P.D. James' "Devices and Desires". "Late Bloomers" by Fern Michaels. My time will be spent reading for a change. And we have the weather for staying inside.
I have to make a dessert for tonite -- Wed. nite meal with Larry & Kim & Torey.
I use my bundt pan every other week when I make coffee cake for Dale's snack. Saw a date bread recipe that sounds good. Dale said he might like it. Know I would. If I don't have a snack on hand, I always have my rolls on hand. I have one on Wed & Sun A.M.'s & sometimes inbetween.
Torey like to make the rounds of the neighbors for food & they love to feed him. Tues. nite Kim was up as Torey had to go outside. Later it was Lar's turn to take him out. Then he wanted on their bed & Kim only had very little room & no blanket. It was not a good sleeping nite for her. Torey was restless so they left at 7:30. After things were cleaned up, I was able to get back to my book by F. Michaels & I enjoyed it so much. 2 down, 2 go to. Finished it this A.M. after my chores were done. Bathroom had to be cleaned & dishes done. The 1st 2 books are fun reading; I'm not as sure about the last 2.
I made the Baby Ruth bars from the 1st library book book. Easy to make & good to eat.
Dale went to the chiropractor yesterday & has another appt. Fri. I has helped. Some time ago Lar tried the newest chiropractor & liked him. They were (husband & wife) on the corner of Conewango & 5th (old store) but moved up on Fifth, just above where the Welshes lived, same side. A dance studio used to be there. Adelaide is now in a nursing home in Pleasant Township.
I'm not watching the inauguration & I'm missing my soaps! Isn't that terrible!!! Ha, Ha. I keep checking & hope it is over, but no such luck.
It is 10 degrees but the sun is out so it seems nicer.
Gen called the other evening. She said something is wrong with her head. She can't remember how old she is. I told her & she wrote it down. John has a girlfriend. Gen mentioned Ed & I said "He's dead isn't he". "Oh no, he's around", but she doesn't know where. She went on to say she was in church & lost her skirt & was so embarrassed, they left early. Someone, I don't know who, was very upset & talked to Ed & Gen hasn't seen him since. It's funny what the mind can make up -- but it is serious to her & she can't forget it & feels bad.
Better sign off & hope to get it in the mail soon. I really miss the mail box on 5th.
Do you read the letters to the editor. Monty Foley has a letter in every so often. He doesn't work & hopes to get SSI. Back trouble. An easy out as it is hard to prove.

We watched the Bills beat the Browns & now Pittsburgh is playing the Jets & the Steelers couldn't get a TD but got a field goal. Steelers won!!!
I asked Dale what kind of cookies he liked outside of tea cakes. He said those date ones meaning the date-filled cookies. Haven't made them for years & he really surprised me. They are a favorite of mine. Before the Steeler game I found the recipe & made the dough & it is chilling in the fridge. My dates are too old but we'll get groceries tomorrow. I'm going to try making Biscotti. The coffee shop in Warren has them & they as good to dunk.
We needed bananas so we stopped at Quality on our way home from the Mall. Dale likes cacti plants & we saw a pretty arrangement of 3 cacti with stones, pebbles & wood. We got it as a gift for him. Barb brought it over to Lar to keep it til Christmas Eve. We didn't know where to hide it uncovered & we didn't want to keep it loosened in a plastic bag.
Barb went up to Lawn & Garden to look around & she found the cutest Santa on sale. It is a policeman Santa holding a little boy on one arm & a flag in the other hand. It plays "God Bless America". I claimed it & paid her for it. The boys is saluting the flag. He (Santa) has a fat tummy, blue suit with a whistle around his neck & a club on his belt.
I got my "away" cards mailed. Had a letter card from Carole & Arland & see they have a new address & I had their old address on the card. I used a label and covered it.
Noticed UB's baseball won over Niagara "in a thriller" to quote the Buff. paper. Another article says "UB athletic dept. has something special brewing". They have a new athletic director & I guess they have hopes of better teams & more winners.
Barb said the announcers on the Buff. game said the Steelers would have a hard time winning then the Steelers play in Buff. I said that's crazy & she didn't like it being a Buff. fan. So that should be an interesting game for this Nelson family. 2 against 1.
Mon. the 13th
I'm watching CNN news & they were telling about 2 men robbing a house when they heard a video "Stop, we've got the house surrounded." They ran out of the house & didn't take anything. Guess the videos are good for something.
Our toaster oven won't toast anymore. We got another one & without reading the direction, Barb said it gets too hot. She had the oven part on. I'm not sure how it will heat rolls up. It is a Black & Decker so it should be OK. To toast you don't heat the oven.
We're getting our first snow but not as much as in Chautauqua County. Erie had had an accumulation. We don't' have much but more is expected thru the nite into Tues. There was a late start to school (10 A.M.) because of slippery conditions in the outer parts of Warren County. Frozen slush, etc.
I've noticed the adds on TV like the videos you are now getting. Will you, rather are you watching them.
Tues. the 14th
I looked at the calendar & realized Christmas is next week & tho't I'd better get busy. And so I did this A.M. This is Dale's early week so I was up at 5 AM. After getting things ready for breakfast, I formed my rolls & baked them. Then I made molasses cookies -- I put them thru the cooky press & they came out very thin & have ridges -- I love them that way. Then I made the Russian tea cakes; next came the rolled out cookies. I put a date mixture on one cooky & covered it with another circle & baked them. I'm not good at making rolled out cookies & their looks aren't hat great but they taste good. I washed pans, etc. several times, rested a bit with a cup of coffee & then got lunch for Dale & myself. After lunch I started a veg. beef soup & made a pumpkin pie. Soup & pie for supper. Finally at 2 pm I sat down & I'm watching my soaps. It feels good to take it easy. Oh yes I changed my sheets & did a load of wash. Pretty good for an old lady, don't you think. I'm just thankful I can do it. I still plan to make one or two more recipes of cookies. Barb likes to give a plate of cookies to Bob & Lynn.
Your pkg. arrived late aft. Barb & I opened it i& she put your gifts under the tree.
Wed. the 15th
Dale said the bank at the Mall was robbed this aft.
Erie has had a rash of robberies -- pizza places, fast food & Radio Shack. Tonite the Erie news at 6 pm told they arrested a young fellow. I missed the first part that told how they caught him, but it probably will be in the Wrrn. paper tomorrow. They know he committed 2 of them & think he did them all. He carried a gun & used it at times. When someone tried to take it away he shot it to let them know he'd use it. He didn't look at all sorry but when he's in jail for a few years, he'll change his tune.
Made 2 batches of cookies today & plan to make 2 or 3 more batches. Made Spritz & a sugar cooky today. Want to make the peanut butter cooky you put a Hershey kiss on after it's baked awhile. And a peanut butter bar cooky & my favorite a coconut macaroon. Who wasn't going to make many cookies. Maybe I'll bring some over to Viola Seaquist. I did last year so I will this year. And Barb will fix a plate for Lynn. Yesterday Scott got one of my rolls & today he got 2 Spritz & 2 sugar cookies. He likes them.
Fri. the 17th
Did you get a Christmas card from Gerald & Darla. It is a picture of the white painted out hosue & it has a small flower box with red flowers. There was a note & Darla said "write". I did write & never got a reply to my last letter so gave up. It's nice to get an answer.
We got an inch of snow overnite but we don't have very much but it is nice to have for Christmas.
I know you'll have a great Christmas.
P.S. Which pkg. did the boys "peek" into!!!

I don't know who told Lar & Kim the food at Holiday Inn was good as 4 of the 5 were disappointed. Only Lar enjoyed the prime rib. When the 3 of us went there in Apr. we all enjoyed our meal. Last nite Barb & Dale had what they had in Apr. & you couldn't recognize that it was the same meal. Maybe because they also had a wedding reception. But we enjoyed being together. Barb wore new new rose jacket & a matching blouse & she looked so nice. Her hair is starting to grow in & she is more than ready to shed her cap.
I just watched Cleveland beat Cincinnati -- it was an interesting game.
When we went to Erie Barb got 2 posters 2'x3' & she framed them & hung them in her room & they really do look nice.
Now I'm watching Pittsburgh at Dallas. The Steelers have a rookie Q.B. & he is really good. You'll be hearing about him if he stays healthy.
I got an electric blanket for my birthday & I'm already using it & liking the warmth.
Mon. the 18th
Your letter came this A.M. & no one was home when I read it. You're right, Paul, I was laughing when I read "Mom, you can stop laughing now" & it made me laugh even harder. So hard tears came to my eyes. A good laugh is good for the soul, so thanks Paul. I'm smiling as I write this. How long will it take Andy to break you down & say yes to a 3rd car? Should I bet on it?
Barb couldn't start the van this A.M. so she walked to Bert's. Bert let her (Barb) use her car so we were able to get groceries. I didn't want to break up my day on Tues. as I have to wash the kitchen floor & do other things for Wed. I've tried to call Warren & Anna but no answer. I'll try again later tonite. They could be visiting one of their kids. Called to see if they could come on Wed.
Ed is too hard on himself. I like his picture.
Lynn told Barb that she & Scott were shopping & Scott wanted to buy condoms. Why, he said kids were taking them to school & blowing them up like a balloon. Poor Lynn & he's not even a teenager. He doesn't like to study & he just writers answers out of his head to get it over. He is being tutored for an hour after school Tues. & Thurs. Other days Barb works with him. Bad, bad marks.
I'm watching Yankees at Boston. Millie is rooting for Boston. I hope Boston can stay ahead. 2-1 Boston at 7 pm, our time. It's mute as I don't like most of the announcers. They all talk too much -- a running conversation & half of the time it's not on baseball.
I see Green Bay won over Detroit. And the Steelers won over Dallas. Finally a good G.B. And Wisc. is doing great in college football. We watched on Sat.
I'm sure I mentioned Target is coming to Jamestown. Behind the Mall -- they bot the little golf course. They also used to have miniature golf there. Nothing started yet -- sure hope it's true.
Tues. aft the 19th
I stayed up til 10:30 last nite watching the N.Y. vs. Boston game & it was the 13th inning. I couldn't stay up any longer as this is Dale's early week. The 1st thing this A.M., I turned on the TV to get the scores & was happy to see Boston won. Because the game was so long, we didn't get to see any of the Astro-Cardinal game & the newspaper said it was a well pitched game for both sides. Astros won. I remember their manager as a player -- he was a scrappy player. I tho't it was ironic that Jeff Kent, former Met, won the game with a homer. He doesn't seem that well liked.
Thurs. the 21st
Happy Day. Boston really beat the Yanks. Now I hope they go all the way.
We had a nice visit yesterday when Ted & Pat were here. I tried to get Warren & Anna but they didn't answer the phone. I like it best when the 3 families are together. Have more fun.
The problem with the van was the battery & it was under warranty.
I'm out of some of my meds so I'll ride over with Barb & walk home. It's misting out -- that will remind me of Seattle weather. Did we really live in Wn -- it seems so far in the distance now. She took me home so I didn't walk.
When you get the Warren paper, dated the 20th you'll read about a big drug bust with many Warrenites included. It was the N.W. part of the state. The leader was from Franklin but Erie wasn't included this time. The pictures are on the front page. About 11 from Warren. This quiet little town!
Lynn got a book for Barb on holistic healing. Barb has given up sweets & is on a healthy diet. Lots of fruits & veggies -- not too much meat. I got a turkey breast for supper tonite. Made apple crisp for dessert.
I look forward to your letters!!!
I like the D.R. chair's material. Very pretty.

Thanks so much for the pictures of Andy. They are so good -- he has a nice smile. Comparing with last year's picture you can see changes. Your son is growing up.
I've been receiving calls & literature for hearing aids but they just go into the "circular" file. I wonder how they got your name -- I guess you can get all kinds of info thru the computer. The info you sent on the house & families proves that.
Frank, across the st., took down the grape vines & arbor in their backyard & it looks so nice & gives more yard space. This weekend his "ex" was helping him & today she cleared out the front corner that had grown wild with weeds. They overplanted when they did that. I'm sure that didn't help when people came to see the house. They might have to cut the price again. Faye is the one holding out.
Thurs. nite when Kim saw the 5 mum plants, she couldn't believe they were 5/10.00. The Sat. before she got 2/10.00 & they are smaller pots. It must have been a one-day special. They have a new principal & vice principal at Sheffield & he is not liked. He closes his office door & does nothing. The Vice p., a woman, does all the work. The office sec'y has a sign on her desk M.Y.O.B. to keep her mouth shut. He lifts weights during gym classes & showers. A teacher who will retire next June is ready to go to the superintendent & tell him the story. Last year he was at Warren Hi. If he stays around, Kim is thinking about an opening at Warren Hi next year, even tho she'd like to stay put.
We enjoyed our dinner at the Fernwood. Barb & I had the fish fry & the fish is delicious, but I'm sure it can't compare to Wi's fish dinners. Dale had the steak-shrimp shish kabob & he liked it but it wasn't quite as good as he had before. Maybe there was a different chef.
Betty Casey & some of her family were with her. Sandy who is divorced, the younger sister whose name I don't remember & her husband. Son Joe & 2nd wife. Joe was married to Laura Hause & had 3 children with her. They were with them today & the daughter looks just like Laura. They started dating in 9th grade. But it didn't last.
For once I have menus planned for the whole week. Hope I stick to them. Tues. is Dale's long day & it's also Bible Study at 11:15 A.M. followed by a potluck. The pastor will be the teacher. Dale said it would be OK with him. It's cool enough for soup & that adds to his meal. And I'll have snacks ready for him. Even if he is 47, I'm still his mother & he does good things for me & I reciprocate.
The only one who caused my gray hairs was Dale. I'd tell him he couldn't go out on a school nite & he'd disregard it & go out the little bedroom, onto the roof & jump to the ground. I know a lot of your weekends were spent in N.Y. area but I figured you had common sense & wouldn't overdo it. Or was I one of those with my head in the sand? Hoping for the best. After a few struggles -- if that's the right word -- I think you all turned out pretty well. Thanks to JoAnna, I know you did!
Wed. Sept 29.
Mon. when I went for my eye appts. it was cancelled, the Dr. was at a meeting. The computer said appt. cancelled by the patient & that made me made. Someone made an error & blamed me. New appt. Oct 11. Barb said that's the day we're going to Erie. I called & said I had an appt. so it will be Oct. 25th.
Dale had a 10 A.M. appt. to have his eyes examined & he needs new lenses. He doesn't go to the medical Dr. Barb had an 11:15 appt. at the same place. The lady asked if she wanted it under Dale's name & his insurance. Barb said "He's my brother." Dale can get time off for Dr.'s appt.
You know I would walk over the 5th to mail letters. They took that mail box away. I know the post man will pick up letters left by our mailbox so maybe I'll be doing that. I'll miss walking over there.
I finally got one up on Barb. She got groceries for me. Costs $24.11 & I had given her $25.00. She said I'll give you 89 cents & you'll owe me 1.00. I didn't agree. She even accused me of being like Scott in math. Finally I got thru to her. I'd give her 11 cents & she'd give me 1.00.
Scott got his grades & they were bad. He always says he doesn't have any homework when he dos. When he does homework he rushes thru & doesn't check. Barb is suppose to help him & she does. but he is very stubborn & doesn't want her telling him what to do. Lynn cares but not enough to keep a check on his work. And she won't tell the teachers he has ADHD or whatever the letters are.
I'm watching the Mets at Atlanta (1 pm game) & the Mets are 3-2 so far! They did win 1 game so it's 1-1. It's almost over & then the playoffs & World Series. I hope St. Louis takes it all. They've been the bst all summer. Exciting end for the N.L. & wild card.
Fri A.M. Ready to get my hair done including a trim. 6 weeks since my perm. Times sure flies.

The first day of school in Warren. It was very humid this A.M. but is better now that it cooled off. Can't wear new sweaters yet.
Barb will be picking Scott up -- or he'll come here & she takes him home & helps him with his studies.
Tomorrow she will have to kemo "thing" taken out. Hope it won't make her sick as they "put her under".
You should have seen the coins Dale has collected. He sends for the new sets of coins etc. & is getting quite a collection. One of the girls at work had old coins from her grandfather. Dale got the first look & picked up some coins for $50.00...halves, dimes, & nickels. He has the Sacajawea coin & the sets of the 5 coins & I forget what you call them. It came to -- proof sets.
Interruption -- The library called & found Barb's book so when she picked it up, I went to the bank &U got my Sept. check cashed. Now I have the money in envelopes for each need i.e., food, spend, hair, etc. The heat got to me this A.M. & I wasn't sure if I'd get to cash the check.
Gary Trembley came today & picked up the eating area seats. As soon as he gets a couple done, he'll bring item over. Barb already washed the bottom walls. Dale said he'd give the floor a good cleaning. It should look nice when they are recovered or reupholstered.
Thurs, Sept. 2
The telephone rang just as I was going to have aft. coffee. It was Gary Tremblay saying he was ready to bring back the kitchen chairs or seats. They are beautiful. In telling them over the phone, I must have told them the wrong materials number as it is a light tan. But I like it -- it looks and feels so good. I'm glad I got it done. It lightens up that corner. The one color I tho't I chose was a darker tan.
Barb recovered quickly from her one day surgery on Tues. Today she was back to work for Bert. Bert's friend from Hawaii comes to visit each year. And she left some clothes where she stayed. Now she wants somewhere to store her clothes she left. And she will pay $2,000.00. So Barb agreed to do it. She called Barb & was happy Barb will do this & Barb is thrilled to get the money. She said she'll treat herself & buy something special. She'll store them in the attic but first she will have to get rid of clothes she stores up in the attic.
Kim & Lar were here tonite. Kim seems to be taking going back to school OK. She wouldn't care to give up her pay check so she'll have to go with the flow.
It's getting close to bedtime & not much has happened around here. The weather is finally wonderful.

I would love to sit in the reading room & have a good book in my hands & a fire in the fireplace. What a dream. It is a beautiful room.
Barb received your birthday gift.
I think my cold is finally over. It's been a cough that lingered.
Congratulations to Andy for getting a summer job. It will be a good experience. I'm sure we'll see a big difference when we see him next.
That was a surprise about Eric getting married. Maybe this will settle him down. It will be an interesting weekend for you.
Last week I made an effort to make menus for the week. Last Sat. we had a pot roast made in the crock pot. It was delicious. I broke it yesterday -- I was lazy & ordered pizza. No one objected. Will follow it the rest of the week. Chicken broc. dish tonite.
Tomorrow we vote -- lot of it is local & statewide. We vote at Holy Redeemer's Center -- not part of the sanctuary. Large enough for 3 sections. I dread the elections for pres. because of all the dads on TV & the phone calls.
My poor Mets, but then the Yankees are nothing to write home about, with their big budget. George must be having fits. The West Coast N.L. are doing pretty good. And I like to watch Fla play. The Braves beat them last nite.
Tues the 27th 6:30 pm
I feel like I could take a nap but I don't want to as then maybe I wouldn't sleep when I go to bed. Haven't done much today. wavered between going to Bible Study this A.M. or fixing lunch for Dale on his long day. Went to Bible Study. Left froz. spaghetti & meat sauce & garlic bread for Dale to fix. Also fixed snacks for him. Then Barb took me to vote. A Todd Nyquist from Youngsville, who is running to take Jim Lynch's place as he isn't running again, got my vote. Pres. Bush was on the ballot but I didn't push that knob. Voted for Arlen Spector because he is more liberal than the one running against him. You can't change an old dog -- I'm still a republican. After that I just watched my soaps & Perry Mason. Nothing was accomplished. Tomorrow I"ll have to make up for it -- the big job will be washing the floor. It is dirty.
I received an invitation to Eric's wedding. I wrote her address down so I could send a card & gift but I can't find it. I thought I wrote it on the back of the invitation but it isn't there. I might have to call you or I could send it to Eric.
Bob & Lynn bot a four wheeler but it's been at work. Scott can't wait to ride it. Now it is at home & Scott hopes to ride it tonite. He said I'll set the table for my Mom & Barb helped him where to put the glasses, napkins, etc. Wonder if he got to drive it.
Dale is finishing his supper. Waffles, scrambled eggs & sausages. Another departure from my planned menu. I was going to try a new recipe, a rice & shrimp dish, but I couldn't find any shrimp in the freezer. I'll move it to next week. I also had a waffle & scrambled eggs earlier. I've been watching The FBI on the Discovery Channel . How can people be so bad & so evil?
Wed the 28. Someone in your class died. Jeannie Smith. 54 years. Look for Wed Apr. 28 paper for obit.
Thurs. 29 Apr.
The Dr. called during dinner time & Barb has cancer & it will mean removing the breast. She is taking it very hard. We don't have any details yet. But she will have to have kemo first. Lar & Kim were here & that helped.
I'll call when we know what will happen.

Yesterday the phone rang -- it was Bert's alarm system calling -- a problem at the house & they needed to get in the house. Bert had gone out to lunch & left a pan of eggs boiling on the stove; they boiled dry & it must have set off the alarm system. When Barb got there, fire truck & policemen were there ready to break in the door. Barb had a key so saved the door. No harm done but a terrible smell in the house. The firemen went down to the basement and found a mess -- a pipe had broken so she had to call the plumber. So there was some good when they found the broken pipe. Barb goes into the basement hardly at all. It's dark & not very clean. Bert has become very dependent on Barb. It's good she has someone who cares.
Easter Sun. showed an increased in attendance at church. It was a nice service.
This is Dale's late nite & he should be home. I have potatoes in the oven so I hope he'll soon come.
Millie wrote they have a large library at the retirement center & she is reading one of Elliot Roosevelt's mysteries. Also on Fri they have a wine & cheese party. They were suspended during Lent but will start again.
Wed the 14th
Tomorrow is the 15th. Is your tax form ready. You sometimes write you've been working on it.
Barb was telling about a boy in Scott's 5th grade class. Lynn said the father was very wild in his youth, so now he keeps a tight rein on his son. He is a trouble maker, then starts to cry & blame the other person. Scott's friend had a fight with this kid & the parents did call the police. He (friend) lost it again & his parents took away his TV privileges. Barb mentioned he got a girl in trouble -- it's hard for kids to keep their temper or tongue -- then the kid cries, etc. He won't have many friends. His dad picks him up after school. He doesn't wait in the car but meets him at Beaty. If he gets in trouble the parents will wonder why & they are the cause!
Lar & Kim have gone, the kitchen is in order & I'm watching the Mets vs. Braves. It was lucky the teams had Tues. off as it rained all day. It cleared so they could play last nite, but it wasn't on TBS.
I got Sara Paretksy's Ghost Country but I couldn't get interested in it, so I gave it up.
Not much happening around here, so I'll bring this to a close.
