Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

I'm watching the Mets vs. Orioles & the Mets are finally ahead of the Orioles. David Wright had a home run emptying all the bases. I think I heard he's getting a lot of All-Star votes & they wondered if he's a great third baseman. Maybe not yet, but they say he has a great future. This was his 3rd grand slam & he has been with the Mets about 2 yrs. Naturally he is my choice no matter if Andy thinks Chipper is the best!!
Barb & Dale were very unhappy when they were awakened at 3:30 this A.M. by loud & vulgar talk coming from the young couple who bot Collins' house. Dale yelled "Keep it down" to no avail & Barb yelled "Please don't talk so loud". I'm sure others were awakened as well. It was the "f" word this & that. Marisa, Lynn's daughter says, "Don't look to our generation to save the world." With all the vulgar language, bad TV, & computer images, she might be right.
You know I get my hair "done" on Fri. & Sat A.M. I put curlers in the top of my hair. Barb made a comment but Mon. I get a perm & now my hair doesn't stay as well & I wanted it presentable for church.
I sat alone in church today. It's been very warm & both Alice & Betty have heart problems so they might not have been feeling up to par.
Patty & her new husband sat on the other end of the pew so after church I offered my best wishes on the wedding & met husband Ron. They are a cute couple & so happy.
Last nite we ate at 5:30 as Barb wanted to ride her bike at 6:30 p.m. Afterwards Dale said it was really too hot to enjoy the meal. He came in from sitting in the sun. So when it is still hot, I sugested a big salad, and he agreed. Tossed salad with hard-cooked eggs, shrimp plus the usual. I'm glad he doesn't mind salads & rolls.
The Mets take first place over golf today. I check to see what is happening during the commercials. Next weekend the Mets are at Toronto & that should be interesting. I like interleague play.
Yesterday I watched Washington beat the Yankees & the Yanks had been leading by 7 runs. It was their closer, used for 5 outs. A swift runner stealing 2 bases & coming in on a bad throw by Mariano. They really rattled him & Wash. won the game!
June 21.
When I got my perm I told Sheila about the loud noise early Sun A.M. A young couple, planning to be married in July, bot Collins' house & moved in. The guy had a motorcycle accident & after that Sheila heard the wedding was off. Sheila said he is another one of those bad boys girls seem to be attracted to. The gal is a Dr. daughter & goes to college. It seems like she should have better sense & maybe she began to realize she's been wrong. Her family lives across the st. from Lynn & they have been doing a lot of work around the house. Maybe they were going to have the reception there.
Barb rode her bike this A.M. Now she is picking strawberries & will also pick up a few groceries for me.
Kim's birthday is today. We celebrate it tomorrow.
Yesterday A.M. I watched "Pillow Talk" & it is such a cute movie. Good they aren't that long. In the aft. I watched "Casablanca", a completely different movie. Enjoyed it.
Will Atlanta Braves ever win a game? I'm beginning to feel sorry for them -- they must be feeling terrible. Gone from top to bottom. But I'm still happy the Mets are on top!
This coming Sat. the Warren Hospital Auxiliary has their yearly money making event. Lar & Kim go with another couple. For the last couple of years it has been at Bett's Park. They have a large tent, tables to sit at, food & band. $50.00 a couple & they always have a good time. No jeans allowed -- I thought people would realize that would be unacceptable, but they had to add that. Sports jacket for men. Kim wears a long skirt -- more semi-format outside. Think it said they plan for a large turnout.

Yesterday Lynn called Barb. They had a bad weekend. Bob's heart acted up & spent a nite in the hospital. He has to take high blood pressure meds. During the nite, their phone rang. Lynn wondered if something happened to her parents. It was Scott calling from his room saying he didn't feel good. She got him to the bathroom but he upchucked on the bathroom floor. They had to remove the rug & clean the floor but it still smelled. He did go to school even tho he still didn't feel good. So he skipped track practice. Lynn told him Marisa could pick him up after school. "No, said Scott." I ant Barb to take me home." So she helped him study for a test. Today there is an away track meet but he didn't go -- he is afraid to ride a bus.
Dale said by fixing his Monte Carlo, he gave himself a birthday present. I'm making a sweet German choc. cake, his choice, for his birthday.
Enjoyed reading your letter & hearing all about Disney World. I know it isn't the place for me -- too much walking, too many people. It is for younger people. I'm content where I am.
This A.M. I washed the kitchen floor & dusted downstairs. After lunch we got groceries.
The Mets play at Wash. & it is an aft. game. I'm trying to see the score but the commercials interfere. Mets 7, wn. 1, final. The Mets are winning!
Today the new neighbors (Carey) started in on fixing up the landscaping. All the trees (shrubbery) have been taken out. They are starting from scratch. By our property, it will be lawn. It looks nice with those hemlocks taken down. We're anxious to see how they'll landscape it. Bet it will cost plenty. He has a 6 figure salary, I'm sure.
I got a turkey breast for Easter. Lar & Kim will be here. Might try a cheesecake recipe for dessert.
Last Sun. I called Gen. She said she saw me in church a few Sun. ago. I said it must be someone who looks like me. Then she wondered why I didn't come over. I said I"m too far away for a drop in visit. She thought I was in the area.
Barb got her bicycle "tuned up". So now she is ready to start bike riding. Lately she has been walking outside. Yesterday we had blue, blue skies & warm temps. Even warmer today but cloudy skies. Nice.
Larry has started his "2nd job", working for himself. He usually has a couple of big jobs he plans for over the winter. He does OK as he has regular customers for trimming, etc.
Thurs. evening the 13th
WE had a nice birthday dinner. He likes the pants & knit shirt I got him. He tried them on & they fit perfectly. I asked him not to wait too long to try them on in case I had to return them. Barb gave him a CD & a Dale Earnhardt shirt. Kim & Lar gave him an auto washing kit. Lar got one for himself & tho't Dale would like it as much as Lar does. I'm sure he thanked you for your gift when you called him on Mon. Next birthday Barb -- she told me I could give her money -- then she can get what she likes.
No school Wed-Mon -- 12th-17th. East vacation.
Yesterday Kim, Betsy, & Michelle went to the Indian Casino. Michelle won $1000.00 on the 5 cent machine. They always divide their winnings. Kim gave some of hers to the Cancer Society. Today they went to Erie & Kim spent her Christmas gift card from you folks.
Mets won again today. WOW!! Now they go to Milwaukee. Barb went online & got the Mets TV schedule for 2006 on SB11. Channel 15 for us.
Collins' house has a "sold" sign on the For Sale sign. On Conewango between 3rd & Verbeck. Lar said Patterson's house up the st. will be going up for sale. He is the funeral director. They will be moving to one of the Carolinas, to be closer to their 2 daughters.
Marisa's "naughty" boyfriend stole $35,000 so he is really in trouble now. She still doesn't want to let go of him but Lynn hopes this will be the end of it. She will never change him.
Sheila & Sue added another girl to their salon, so now there are 4 gals plus 1 part time. They don't want to get too big but if they have a following that will make it nice.
I'm watching Phillies at Atlanta. Phillies won last nite (so did the Pirates who came from behind vs. L.A.) & are ahead tonite. I'm sure they miss their pitcher coach Leo Muscilli (sp) who went to Baltimore. Mets to go Atlanta Sat & Sun Apr 29 &30. The Mets should do better (I hope) this year. Atlanta just has "regular" pitching now.
Soon my bedtime.

Barb & I went to the Chinese buffet tonite. She liked it & of course I do. Then we went to the Mall & got Dale's birthday present. He said he'd like another pair of pants, so I got him a pr. of Hagger's slacks in a bark color 34-34. The Lee's pant fit very good but they just had the lighter color, so I hope these fit just as well. Also a knit shirt that matched in a stripe. It's not loud so he should like it. Light tan background with a stripes that matches the pants. I stopped at Arby's & picked up 2 sandwiches for Sale & I'll fix French fries to go with them. It's his late Tues.
Dale put in P.C. pipe in the kitchen so no more leaking.
I was surprised you spent every Sun. at Edna's when you were in Spfld. I don't remember hearing that before. I'm sure she looked forward to having you there. Also remember Johnson's Bookstore -- we used to browse there.
Last month I made a white cake & it was really good & didn't get stale. Now I can't find where I put the recipe. I've looked & looked & can't find it. Tried another recipe but it isn't as good. I'm great at losing recipes!
The crossword puzzle you mentioned -- pot luck offering -- around here it would be rice pudding or Swedish meatballs.
Around here, they are hoping that an Applebee's will come in the new building we're getting -- i.e. Walmart & Lowe's. You're so lucky to have a Target. I wish one would come to Jamestown. There were rumors one was coming but it never worked out.
Thurs a.m. at 11:30 I'm getting a permanent. Sheila was away -- Las Vegas -- last week so I had to wait until Thurs. for an opening. They are 5 gals now but one gal only works Wed. & Thurs.
This A.M. I woke up early 5 A.M. & finally got up & went downstairs. By the time Dale left, I felt tired so I slept in the chair for 30 minutes. Then I got dressed, etc. I set dinner rolls & made a batch of choc. cookies. Baked 24 cookies & froze the dough for later baking. It is handy to have it in the freezer, but I must remember to take the dough out of the freeze the nite before I want to bake the next day.
Barb & Dale listen to the Wrrn radio & say they play good oldies & rock that they enjoy. They don't ever play any music older people enjoy. Barb also said, she read people are watching TV but more of the older series instead of the newer ones.
I have Thur's menu planned but not dessert. I have to know since I get a perm & that breaks up my day. It will be so nice to have it trimmed & curled again.
Apr. 3rd there will be baseball games to watch. While watching ESPN, a couple of announcers said they think the Mets have a good chance to be winners. Wouldn't that be nice -- my fingers are crossed!
Thurs the 30. Got a perm today & it looks nice. Glad not to have it hanging on my neck.
Want to finish this & mail it tomorrow when we go to Jamestown. Got your letter today & I see this is your last nite. I know you've had a great time & I'm sure Andy enjoyed his baseball experience & Eddie enjoyed Disney World.

I'll start a letter before lunch. I made a loaf of blueberry bread, took a few things I won't be wearing up to the attic & brought down some cotton shirts. They need to be washed but that can wait. It is a nice spring day.
Dale will go to get a blood test at the hosp. lab. He said his Blazer is acting up, needs a new engine, so he should get rid of it. Also talks about selling the Monte Carol & just driving the El Camino. It hasn't been driven for a number of years as he has been working on it. With just 1 car, it can be kept in the garage all the time. Save on insurance money as well.
When we were at the Lakewood Mall last Thurs, I was wishing I was 50 years younger. Why? One of the shops had the cutest outfit in their window. A pretty pink top with the popular tiered skirt in a pretty print to match the top. It is really a pretty outfit. Guess you know I tho't it was "pretty". by the use of that word!
Also on the way home, we saw a v-shaped flock of geese flying north. A sign of spring, but I haven't seen a robin yet. I'm ready for spring. I have to pull the shades over the kitchen sink windows down a bit as the sun shines in my eyes.
The new family across the st. have someone clearing & raking up. I heard they want to do some new landscaping.
Once in awhile the Shopping Guide is delivered to our door. It included a section of houses for sale. I noticed it said sale pending for Collins house. The cost is $124,900. They have 4 bedrooms & a big backyard, double garage so that is not too bad. Ryberg's house hasn't been sold. Mail just came so I'll read your letter.
Mar. 17. Happy St. Patrick's Day
I have really enjoyed the Baseball World Classic. And I think the announcing team of Gary Thorne, Arestes Destrada & Orel H. are tops. None are overbearing, or hogs the mike. I hope they announce a log of the games.
Last nite Lar said he'll soon have a hi-intensity (hope that's the correct word) TV. He wants it to watch the World Soccer games coming up soon. Something new in TVs.
When I got up yesterday there wasn't any snow but about 6 AM, it started to snow hard. Kim said driving to school was really tough. The neighbor shoveled his walk but by aft. all sidewalks were clear from the sun. It is clear & cold this A.M. 25.
Yesterday I was busy so today I'm taking it easy. Our dinner is in the crockpot. W hen we shopped on Mon. I got some meat whose date was soon to expire. I got 2 pkg. & froze them & used one today. Nice to get a bargain once in awhile.
Just watched a crazy movie. TCM, of course. Of course I didn't see it from the beginning.
Scott is going out for track this spring. Barb & Lynn wonder how long he'll last. He wants to go out for sports as the girls go for those guys! He wants to be "cool". Marisa arrived home last nite from Fla. She enjoyed her time there. Lynn said to Barb things are easier when Marisa is gone. Scott can't do anything right & Marisa constantly yells & swears at him. She has a filthy mouth & that is not good.
Sheila & Sue are raising their rates because of the increase of gas & elec. 2.00 for shampoo & set & $1.00 for perms. That's not much. Starts Apr. 1.
Finally saw 2 robins in our driveway this A.M.
Dale wondered if he got a bad batch of oil for his Blazer. He changed the oil & that has helped, but there is a noise that bothers him. So he'll look for the reason for that. He's not quite ready to give up on the Blazer.
Last nite Lar figured out my state tax & it is ready to mail. Dale has finished & sent in his taxes. He'll get a refund. Barb hasn't figured her out yet. Last yr. it was finished in Jan.
I've only seen the U.S. team place once & that was against Japan & they should have lost that game. 3rd base "rhubarb" went against Japan & the player didn't leave early. They aren't very good representatives for the u.S. I bet some team's gen. manager's mouths are "watering" when they watch some of the Cuban players. They are good. I'm anxious for regular baseball to start. Pittsburgh is doing pretty good in spring training games. I should root for them, but I don't' know if I can give up being a Met fan.
Apr. 17th is Millie's birthday. You are constantly in my thoughts & prayers and I know you'll come thru with flying colors! We all are praying for you.
It's only Thurs. so I'm a day early for St. Pat's. It has been that way since Lar & Kim come on Wed. Next Wed. is that last time so we'll get back to Thurs. again.
The crockpot dinner was good. Dale isn't home yet (6pm) so I didn't wait for him. Most likely he's working on the Blazer.
I pulled another boo boo today. The crockpot was ready by 9 A.M. At 11 A.M. I couldn't smell it cooking. I forgot to turn it on -- another senior moment!!!
USA Today had a story on "the other third baseman in NYC", meaning the Mets David Wright. They think he'll be an All Star for a long time. He is really a nice kid, down to earth, & wanting to please. And he's been a Met fan growing up. He has 3 brothers & his father is a police captain in Va.
There was also an article on the increase of the number of college grads living at home. Various reasons, debts, cost of apt. or buying one. They come home so they can save money to get a start. Some parents like the idea, some don't.
Tomorrow I have to get more meds & will probably go to the Mall. I need to geet a few things.
Remember we are with you all in thoughts & prayers.
P.S. John just called to tell us they are going to have a son. All is well with Fe & the baby. You can tell that John is very excited with this news.

Trick or treating started at 6 pm & by 7 we turned out the light. The candy was gone.
Was up at 5 A.M. & as soon as Dale went to work (7AM) I finished rolls I started on Sun. Sheila & Sue always come by to show us their get-up. They each got 5 rolls, Scott got 4, I ate one & 5 were left. So I walked over to church & gave them to our pastor. Her husband loves them. Then I did my Mon. chores so I'd be ready for Sheila & Sue. I waited all aft. & they didn't come. Mon is our day to get groceries so when Barb came home a little after 4 we left to get groceries. When we (Dale & I) were eating Sheila & Sue came. Right into the kitchen & it was a mess with pans etc. around. Barb had eaten earlier as she had volunteered to answer the door. T hey won $150.000 for prizes for their costume. They love Halloween & are very clever in their ideas.
Now I'm watching TV & relaxing.
The puzzle I chose is a brown building against white snow & tree branches. Not much color. Even Barb doubts my choice. It is far from easy to put together & I wonk I wont' get it done. It was a bad choice!
Frank, across the st, sold his house & has to be out in 3 weeks. He's sorry he has to leave the neighborhood as he has enjoyed living here. He's very friendly whereas we never see the new neighbors, (Carey's house). He'll still be in Warren in a small apt. for the time being.
Maybe you'll see that Ethel Johnson died. Chris's mother. She was 90 last spring & was at the Rouse Home.
I'm watching Psychic Detective. A murder takes place in Greenfield, Mass. before Halloween. Greenfield isn't that far from Spfld.
Wed. aft.
Barb was telling me that Scott was doing thru his mother's jewelry to see if he could find something to give to a girl. Lynn said "no way" is he to give away any of her jewelry. These kids have to "go steady" with someone to be a "jock".
We gave up on the brown & white puzzle, so I'm working on an old one with lots of color.
Tonite I'm having pork chops, succotash, rice, applesauce & banana cream pie. Sounds good to me.
We're enjoying Indian summer & it is so nice.
I ordered Barb's Christmas present, a Danskin toning system, from Penney's. Her choice. And a sweater set for me.
BiLo had Food Club flour, Heinz ketchup, Swanson's broths, each 5 for $5.00. I always get cheese there & our favorite lunch meat, Sahlens ham, was on sale.
Yesterday UPS came to the door with a large envelope for Dale. Good he was home as the Co. wanted proof. Had to see his driver's license. It was a check for $250.00 to buy tools thru their distributor. Trouble is, one hasn't called at Shutls for some time & Dale knows what he's like. He thinks they might have a catalogue he could order form.
We had a nice dinner & visit with Lar & Kim. I can't get any Christmas gift ideas from Kim.
The other A.M. I happened to look out the kitchen. It was 5:30 A.M. & I saw a couple out walking. It reminded me of you two walking in the early A.M.
I'm enjoying putting pieces of the puzzle together. Much nicer than staring at the pieces to see if I can find some that go together.
The yawns are beginning to tell me it is bedtime. When it gets close to 10 pm I'm ready for bed esp. Dale's early week. So I will say good night.

When the pkg. came, I just knew it was Andy's picture & couldn't wait to open it -- ahead of my birthday. Saved the cards for the 15th. It is such a nice picture of Andy. Thank you so much. How grown up he is & such a nice-looking guy. In 2009, I'll see (I hope) Ed's graduation picture & how much he will change.
Last nite I stayed up til 11 pm & the game was 5-2, the Angels. The first thing I did this A.M. was to check the scores. Happily the Yankees lost. Wonder who will be mgr. next year. will Torre be in George's favor anymore. Also noticed that the Steelers won over S.D. Dale stayed up til it was over & glad he did as the Steelers won in the last seconds.
You were happy that the Packers showed up & won big. Not happy Wis. Badgers lost. Albert & (his wife's name won't come to mind) had to be happy Penn State finally have a winning team. I couldn't watch as my eyes were glued to TV watching Houston beat the Braves. What a game -- over 5 hours, 2 grand slams & a winning homer by a rookie giving Roger Clemens a save. It was so exciting & of course the right team won!!! Hi Andy! 18 innings -- both sides must have been exhausted. Phil Garner said he wouldn't sleep that nite. Too charged up. I'm still rooting for St. Louis vs. Chicago, Chicago to win.
After I got myself ready for the day I started my rolls. This is Dale's late day so I figured I might be able to bake them later in the day. Wed. I should set dinner rolls & bake them Thurs a.m. Then I started veg. beef soup. They had the meat I like for swiss steak buy one, get 1 free. Froze one & used the other for soup. Bot Dale beef on sale so we'll have roast beef sandwiches & soup for supper.
Will try a new recipe Thurs nite. Slit pork tenderloin down the center 3/4 of the way. Stuff it with bread stuffing after pounding it thinner. Tie it around & bake. Will make applesauce, baked pot. and a veggie. Pecan pie for dessert. Sounds good to me.
Sun. A.M. I turned the furnace on to heat up the house a bit. It warmed up some. Mon & today the temps were that low. Usually the furnace stays on by now. Lucky when gas is so high. This month I should find out how much highers my gas bill will be.
Yesterday I got a perm & afterwards we went grocery shopping. When you own your own beauty shop you make concessions to your clients or they will go elsewhere. Yesterday Sheila's first appt. was at 8:30 A.M. & she figured it would be 10 pm before she left for home. Many shops are closed on Mon. but her Mon. & Tues. are busy ones. Wed. is her day off. Sat. they'll work just to noon (have a wedding party to do) & then will go to Buffalo for a Sat-Sun hair show.
Time for my A.M. coffee.
Now it's 7 pm & I'm watching TV. Baked my rolls & they are in the freezer. Barb said the soup was good & I agreed.
Yesterday when the weather was cool, Barb decided to pain the front & back door jambs. Think that is what you call them. The front door still had yellow paint in the jamb. Dad must not have painted it when the new door was put in. And the back door jamb had gotten dirty. She will put a 2nd coat on. A big improvement.
Will watch some of the playoff game but when 10 pm comes, I'll be ready for bed.
Forgot one thing I wanted to tell you. Last week Fri. at work 9911 was called for Randy Swanson. He thought he was having a heart attack but after tests were taken they found he has sugar. He'll have to change his lifestyle. His wife cooks at the Cornerstone & works until 2 A.M. Randy goes over to wait to drive her home as she doesn't drive. He also has asthma & the smoky atmosphere isn't good for him. as well as the late hours. And he has gotten fat -- big belly hangs over his belt. Dale says he look 10 years older than you. I'm glad you take care of your body.
Fri A.M.
Just had my hair done & now we'll go get my meds. This aft. I see the Dr. at 1 pm, for a checkup. I go three times a year.
More cloudy damp weather but little rain. Am glad of that when I hear about all the flooding & continuous rain in the N.E.
Larry & Kim like Andy's picture. What a heartthrob!!

Larry gave himself a "buzz" haircut. He likes it -- easy to wash & easy to comb, meaning he doesn't have to comb it.
The bridge is opened but not completely finished. The sidewalks have to be finished. We haven't driven over it yet --I don't' go to the Dr. until Oct.
Last Fri. we went to Jamestown. I only got groceries at Wegman's.
This A.M. I was ambitious. Washed the counters, moving everything. Washed the windows, even tried to do the outside but didn't do a good job. I'm getting too old to climb by the sink & try to get the outside & not get it streaked. Afraid I'll fall. Anyway when Barb came downstairs my work inspired her to start cleaning the kitchen. She washed the walls by the sink & the cupboard woodwork. Cleaned the lower cupboards & they look nice. She's cleaning in sections as she went to Lynn's in the aft.
When I read your letter about the dinner -- I had to look in the dictionary to see what kind of sauce you had with the lamb. I found out it is made with egg yolks, lemon, rice & chicken broth. I thought I had memorized the spelling but I can't recall how it starts.
Gen called me last Fri. Ed built a little place for swimmer to change. Gen said 2 girls are sleeping there & won't leave & she didn't know what to do. I was sure that wasn't true & I told her to lock the doors & forget about it. Called Millie on Sat. She said when she lived in Spfld. a neighbor had Alzheimer's & she was always saying someone is in her garage. Gen also says Ed isn't dead -- he has a girlfriend. Millie thinks Gen thinks John is Ed, because she never talks about John. Just says the boys help her.
Larry & Kim had a busy weekend last Fri-Sun. On Fri they went to a wedding in the Pittsburgh area -- a former student. Sat. & Sun. they went to Niagara on the Lake with another couple who are older. We'll hear about their weekend on Thurs. Niagara on the Lake is near St. Catherine, Canada.
Our pastor is back. Elaine Jacobson Crandall, Barb's age, was the "grandma" to be in charge of the baby. Different ones will help out during the service. Elaine's oldest daughter is expecting so she will get getting some practice.
Last weekend Sheila (hair) & her husband were going to Pittsburgh for the weekend. One nite they were going on a 3 hr. cruise featuring a fish buffet -- all kinds of fish. Sounds interesting.
Last nite there wasn't much on TV so I turned to TCM & there was a good movie: Key Largo with Lauren Bacall, Claire Trevor, Humphrey Bogart, Ed. G. Robinson & Lionel Barrymore. It meant I had to stay up longer but I couldn't leave it. It was so good. And all those stars. It was great.
Thurs the 4th
I was up at 5AM -- you say "why when she is retired & could sleep in?" I wanted to get a carrot cake in the oven & pot. salad made before it got too hot. I don't turn on the AC til later. I open the doors & windows to cool off & put the dining room fan on. Then I got dressed, etc., watered the plants, rose bushes, pot & all. Decided to pick some ripe blueberries off our bush & now I'm resting. Soon I'll have a cup of coffee & sample the carrot cake. We're having steaks, pot. salad, green beans, & broccoli salad & carrot cake for our Thurs nite dinner. Barb does the grilling & the rest of the meal is in the fridge. Just the beans to fix. I'll sit in my chair & watch my favorite TV programs.
The last week of July there was Vacation Bible School. The last Sun. of July some of the children sang the new song in church & 2 older ones had the sermon on the Bible verses used. Denise Johnson Windlow's oldest daughter had a part & she speaks so well, loud enough & with expression. Will be a soph. at Wrrn. Hi. She has lectored & does a great job. Nice to see the youth take a part in the service.
I paid the tax bill on the house & also the insurance on the house. Also in Aug. I play for the newspaper for a year plus a tip for the paperboy. And I still have money in my checking acct. I'm very fortunate.

My next letter will be written in July. Times is too fast for me.
I'll start with Sun. Our pastor, her husband, tiny baby Jason & Pastor Beth's mother were in church. The baby is just 8 lbs. and doing OK. He is the size of a baby doll. And we got bad news -- our organist was in the hospital & had to resign as organist. It's a big loss ^& organists "are as scarce as hen's teeth" as the old saying goes.
Sun. nite we had an enjoyable time & good dinner at Nickel Inn. They have hummingbird feeders outside the windows & you can see them feeding. It still is a very popular place to eat.
I'm watching Nelson Eddy &
We are enjoying the A.C. during this hot spell. Suppose to be less humid for the 4th of July weekend.
Ray Forstrum (Youngsville) is preaching during the pastor's absence & I think he depends a lot on "the barrel" for his sermons (old ones). It sounds like he doesn't prepare that much & repeats himself. I suppose it's hard to say "no" & there aren't that many retired pastors to supply. I'm glad Dad quit before he couldn't do a good job.
This A.M. I was out early watering the pots with flowers & the ones on the porch. For 2 days Barb's been putting off picking strawberries. It's 8:45 & she is still in bed. She was going to get up early & go pick. I don't know what the word "early" means to her.
Last Sun. she asked Dale what time church started. She didn't think Dale was right wen he said 9:30 A.M. You see I leave at 9:10 & that is way too early for Barb. I like to be early as there are always others there ahead of me. Guess I get that from my dad. He always wanted to be early rather than late.
Barb had a film developed at BiLo in one hour & she was very pleased with the results. She's also getting some more prints made.
Every day the weather channel shows showers, and we need rain, but nothing happens. Finally Monday pm we got about 1/3 rain with a lot of wind.
John Harper's pic & article are in today's paper. I'm sure you'll notice it.
I'm thru, except for getting the garbage ready for Thurs, so Ill take it easy. I just cleaned the bathroom & towels are washing.
Fri. July 1
I'd better finish this & get it mailed.
Last nite Courtney was here for dinner. Bert & 3 others went out to eat so Barb was responsible for Courtney. She just finished 7th grade & has the teenage problems with her mother. They are here for 1 more week. Later Barb & Courtney went to the mall, Lar left for work & Kim walked Torey home.
Bon Ton is having a 4th of July sale & Kim went shopping for a dress for Lar's 35 anniv. of graduation. It will be at the Country Club. She found a 50.00 dress, with the sale coupon etc. it cost $14.95. She got some decorations (from a 50% off table) for her newly painted kitchen.
Barb & I will go up this Aft. Barb always says I don't need anything but she can't refuse a sale. Recently she has bought, on sale, about 5 pr. capri pants. Last week I saw a blouse I really liked but not in my size so I lost out.
At the Mall Kim saw one of her ex-students. She tho't he'd never leave Sheffield. But he joined the Army & soon will go to Iraq for a year. She said he looked so good & was nice to talk to. She welcomed the change.
Barb picked 7 qt. strawberries & said it was easy picking. Had strawberry shortcake last nite, chicken from BiLo (already cooked), potato salad & beans from the garden. Strawberry & watermelon salad. Easy & delicious.
Sheila had the start of a tooth implant so isn't working today. I got mixed up -- didn't realize the appt. was for Thurs. & I missed it. So I have to wash my hair myself. I used to do it so I'll hope for the best.
I love Turner Classic Movies. I really enjoy watching them.
Don't work too hard! Enjoy your party.

Another Sun. & another Mets game on TV. They are really hot after 5 losses. Full house yesterday when Pedro M. pitched. Hope they keep it up.
Our nice weather continues. I washed & pressed a dress I've had for ages -- when Dad was living -- but it was too big. So I wore another dress that is at least 3 yrs. old. When Barb saw it, she said "where did you get that dress." She was with me when I bo't it. It is dressier & I don't wear it that much. I've looked for a new dress but ones for old ladies are hard to find.
When I get my hair done Sheila & I talk about our families. I said Millie would be 90 & she wondered if he hair was white. I took the picture Millie sent to show her. Sue, the other gal, was doing one customer & her next lady was there. Sheila couldn't believe she is 90 & neither could the other 3.
Fri. we went to the Mall & I was looking for a top to go with skirt I got a couple of years ago in Erie. The skirt has a light tan background with various shades of lilac & deep red. I like the skirt a lot but haven't found a top to go with it. I'm looking for a light lilac & Barb found one. Very pretty but too dressy. I bo't it regardless as it will go with slacks. Also on sale. I'll look for a cotton knit. We might go to Jamestown this coming Fri.
The grade schools that will be closed are having open house for former students. Jefferson had theirs last Fri from 3:30-8:30 pm. They had a live D.J. playing music & all we could hear was the boom, boom, boom! Barb was beside herself. Sat. she went up to Lynn's as she had forgotten something &U told Lynn about it. She didn't get any sympathy as Lynn had her own story. The Sat. before the boys were riding their motorcycles (Scott has one) behind their house. It was noisy U& another house had loud music. Lynn said she would have called the police, only her son was one of them.
She also heard that Anne Smith has osteoporosis (can't find the spelling in my small dictionary) & when she was in a store in Syracuse she fell & broke her hip. After the operation she was in a wheelchair, now she's using a walker. Tough to have that happen away from home.
I'm "jelling". Got some shoe inserts & they are wonderful.
I told Barb your favorite movie of all time is "North by Northwest". She got that at the library & enjoyed it. She watched it several time. It's one of her favorites.
Mon the 21 of April
I got a perm this aft & I really needed one. It was getting long & no curl. We usually get groceries on Mon. so Barb said we could get them later. She didn't get home early so I fixed leftovers. Last Sat. I made a penne casserole (like lasagna) & I've learned how to make so it taste good. I make the 12 x 9 dish so there are leftovers. An easy meal & no one objected. Then we got groceries & it wasn't as busy.
Now I'm watching the Braves at Houston. Last night I watched the Braves at Philly. After 9 innings it was 0-0 & I went to bed. This is Dale's early week. I was pleased to see Philly won 2-1 in the 11th. The paper also mentioned that "George" is steaming because the Yankees are 4-8 as of this A.M. He thinks the players are better than that. But some of them are showing their age. Having the Mets filling Shea Stadium twice doesn't help & maybe he wishes he had gotten Pedro M. Some young guys are showing promise.
Sheila was telling me today that her husband's folks have a camp in the Tidioute area. It was broken into & damaged. Broken glass -- damage to everything they could break. They left no beer to be taken but there was a little liquor. It can be seen from the road & there is a house close by. The lady never locked her doors but now she does. It scared her.
Dale mowed the lawn tonite. The seeds Barb started have started to sprout. Even you can see a little green coming on the trees. A nice time of the year.
I finally memorized the Nicene Creed.
Tues. the 19th
This A.M. I had a blood test. Came home & made my breakfast -- scrambled eggs, slice of apple bread & one of my rolls. Made potato salad to go with hamburgers for supper tonite. Washed my kitchen rugs & hung them outside & they dried fast in our "summer weather". It will change & get colder by week end. Washed the floor -- didn't want to put clean rugs on a dirty floor. Then I quit & took it easy.
I see the Catholic church has a new Pope.
Barb rode her bike today for the first time. For her birthday Barb choose chicken from BiLo -- already baked. Mashed pot, peas & carrots, fruit salad & blueberry pie. Double crust. I have frozen blueberries. I made the pie crust this A.M. so my biggest job will be to make the pie. Bert gets these chicken often & Barb wanted to try them & I didn't object.
There are 4 candidates for judge. 3 men & a woman. Sheila talks to her customers (for lack of a better word as she has both men & women) & asks them about those running. One is a woman that many favor. They say she is very fair & has experience with women & children. So I guess I'll vote for her in May.
The gas co. will be putting a new line in on 3rd Ave. The fellow came for the owner's signature. In our case all 4 of you. You probably have received a call by now. It will go thru our lawn -=- about a foot from the sidewalk & they will be responsible if anything goes wrong.
Thurs. Barb had a nice birthday dinner. The chicken from BiLo was delicious. Torey enjoyed it too. As soon as he came in the house he smelled it. I reheated it in the oven. The blueberry pie was delicious. The crust around the edge was a little too thick. I didn't roll it thin enough. It was just the right texture. I used 1/4 c. tapioca & 1 T. cornstarch with 4 c. of frozen blueberries. I plan to make another blueberry pie sometime.
Larry has started his "2nd job" & keeps busy. He has a good following. Torey doesn't like the new truck. He can't get into it -- Lar has to lift him up into it.
Last Sun. our pastor said "it looks like spring has arrived." Wonder what she'll say this Sun when it's in the 40's & a chance of snow flurries.
Think I've covered our happenings. One more birthday to go. Lar's & he wants steak & carrot cake. We still get the L. L. Bean catalog & Lar saw a shirt he liked.

This is the weekend NASCAR returns to racing & we have been watching Speed Channel & races. The big race is tomorrow from Fla. If you are a real fan & have the money that is the place to be this weekend. Daytona Beach.
Think I've mentioned this before what I learned from the Food Channel. Marinate chicken with balsamic vinegar, onions & garlic, only I omit the garlic. It is absolutely Dale's favorite way to do chicken. They pan fried the chicken, but I baked it. We had that tonite with Uncle Ben's rice, another of Dale's favorite. And broccoli & fruit salad. An easy & fast meal to prepare. Make peanut butter bars for dessert. Another easy recipe. Similar to choc. chop cookies.
Barb has to go to the liquor store almost every week for Bert. Barb hopes they don't think she uses all of it. Barb thinks Bert should cut down on alcohol. She is 87, in poor health, her friends have died or are in nursing homes so I say let her have her comforting drink. She doesn't get out that much anymore.
Sun. Feb 21
We're watching the racing -- it is exciting to watch. I forgot to mention when I had my hair done, I said to Sheila racing starts Sun. Sue's customer said "Marion do you like racing?" Sheila answered for me. "She is a big face fan." I said I have to be as that is the main sport for Dale so I have to understand it. I do enjoy it but it takes a back seat if baseball happens to be on at the same time.
I don't know if you remember the Nicholson's. They lived on East St. next to the funeral home. There were 2 sisters & 3 brothers. One was a lawyer who was a good one but ides young. None ever married. They all have died & the last one died rectally. They were ever active in the church but open to it. They left over a 2 million estate. The church will get the interest of 20% of the estate but it will probably take up to 2 y ears to settle (the estate). Pretty nice. I know Dad used to call on the sisters who died first.
Barb & I finally finished the puzzle. I'll put the card table away for awhile.
We won't go to Jamestown tomorrow -- the weather won't be that nice, sleet & rain. I'd rather wait for nicer weather.
We like our new organist. He plays very well & is getting acquainted with the liturgy. He makes the organ sound very good. He will lead the choir.
Tues pm the 22nd
This A>M. I went to Bible Study at church followed by pot luck lunch. I made my tools to bring. One thing that is never left over. The pastor took 3 rolls home the last time I bro't them. Her husband ate all three of them. He said "who made those rolls, I want to marry her." Today I gave her the left over rolls so her husband should be happy.
Barb took the laptop computer to Lynn's so Lynn could help her get started -- how to use it.
You know what I remember about Janesville. We spent our first nite as man & wife in a hotel there. Our wedding was at 8 pm; after the reception we drove with Min & Lila & family to Beloit & then we took their car & drove to Janesville. It was a terrible night. Jan 26 & it was foggy & you couldn't see anything & it took a long time to get there. We spent Sat. night with Min & Lila. Dr. Benander asked Dad to preach at Salem that Sun & he did. The first of the week we left for Auburn via train. We got to Auburn in the morning & went from the train to the Strands for breakfast. They are the ones that let you, Paul, open the cupboard doors & play with the pots & pans.
We've been watching reruns of Seinfeld & they are so crazy. The other nite I was surfing the TV & came upon "Beverly Hills Cop 2". It was so crazy & I laughed so hard. Dale came downstairs to see what I was watching. And today Perry Mason was in color. Barb tho't that was the only one in color -- the first series.
That was really nice to be invited to consider applying for the job in Janesville. But I can understand you not wanting to move because of the boys & the feeling you still have something to give at Middleton. I guess that is why we continued to stay in Warren. It sure looks like a nice modern building.
I hope you're over the flu by now. I had an extra Valentine so I sent it to my friend Shirley in Auburn. She's the one whose husband died last Nov. Heard from her today. The card arrived when she was getting over a bad case of the flu that left her very weak.
I don't know if you remem -- I've already covered that subject. Nicholsons.
Our organist is 32 years old & last fall he had a triple bypass operation. He was at church this A.M. When we were eating lunch the phone rang & it was his wife. When he returned home he collapsed & was driving himself to Warren hosp. He lives in Jamestown but didn't want to go to the Jamestown hosp. We hope all things will be OK for him as organists are hard to come by. His wife is only 22 yrs. old. They have 3 children, the oldest is 6. She was young when she had the 1st one. T hey are a nice couple.
Wed. the 23. I made the apple dessert from Bon Appetit (however you spell it) and it is good. I had to sample it. It has a think graham cracker base & that adds to the taste.
Gen called this noontime. She tho't she was calling Millie. We visited a bit. Called Betty Casey -- she had a slight stroke & is doing better. Hope to get to church soon.
Love to all. Marion, better make it Mom.

I'm sorry I didn't know about Andy's confirmation. I'll send a card as soon as I can. Don't have any on hand!
I recognized the liturgy right away.
Sheila thinks the house she grew up in is haunted. They have a rocking archaic upstairs that will rock for no reason at all. Someone who worked before her mother died (night shift) told them your house is haunted. Since her mother died funny things have happened but she didn't say what. Before her folks bo't the house someone committed suicide there.
I didn't watch the big game & we were sorry Phillie didn't win. Barb \fixed chili & I made pot. salad & baked chicken thighs & legs in a B.B.cue sauce. And pumpkin pie. I watched poker on the travel channel & also watched Court Channel. Cold Case Files, etc.
Dale noticed in the trash barrel, at work, a kitchen faucet. The handy man at work put a new one in at one of the Shults homes & threw away the old one. Dale claimed it & is fixing it up. It's a real nice one.
We were lucky at church. We have a new organist. It all helps to get rid of the worry -- not mine but the pastor's worry.
The pastor announced yesterday that Rose Seeley is now in the nursing home on Water St. Her sister is there. Rose has Alzheimer's. It was quite a shock to me.
I like your kitchen chairs. Your pictures are very interesting.
I don't know if you recall Anne Sears. She lived next to Arlene Hornstrom on Glenwood. Had a daughter Kathy & one son Bob. Her husband died last week. We worked together at Beaty. You might see the obit in the paper.
Larry stopped by last Sat. to show us his new truck, a Mitsubishi, and it is very nice. One side of the truck folds down for easy loading or unloading. It is a flat front & the front cab lifts up very easily to show the motor. It has a high step into the cat & Lar has to lift Torey up to get into it. Torey doesn't seem to like it. Barb took a picture but when it will be developed is another thing. Lar said he could take a picture & send it to you. He's very pleased with his purchase.
Our Schwan man quit after an argument with the manager. He couldn't take it anymore. No job in sight. And they have several vacancies so I'm not sure when we'll get their chicken today. I got 2 boxes today. It is such good chicken. The mgr. also fired the asst. mgr. because he is in the hospital having had an operation. I'm sure the man can fight that -- no reason for a firing. Mostly I just bo't chicken but he thanked me for being a good customer.
I mailed Valentines yesterday -- to the boys, Ruth, Millie, Gen, a friend in Gt. Falls. I didn't send a card to her this year or last as I didn't hear from her last y ear. A letter in a Valentine. She is apt to skip a year.
I got a card for Andy but it probably won't get mailed til Fri. I miss the mailbox on 5th & Conewango.
Thurs. the 10th
Lynn & Barb were talking & somehow got to talking where they were born. Lynn was surprised to hear Barb was born in Gt. Falls Mont. She told Lynn you & Lar were born in Auburn, Wn. & Dale in Mont as well. Guess she didn't realize ministers could move like that. After the merger most pastors stay in one area. The old Augustana Synod, you could go all over the U.S.
The new Bon Appetit had 2 good recipes I copied. One for baked French toast that you make the nite before. Good for Christmas breakfast. The other an apple cake that is a little different than other recipes for apple cake I have.

No baking today -- made banana bread on Thurs & froze it. Just have to remember to take it out on Sun.
Dale works today & Barb is still in bed. She has to go to Bert's (today). She helps her when Bert takes a bath. She missed 2 days this week. Once because of a headache, they other bad roads & Bert told her to stay home.
I'll try to answer questions. I hear from Larry & family because the last time I was home, or was it earlier, we went to their house for lunch. It was earlier because the 4 girls went to visit. Since then we've exchanged cards. I didn't know Debbie before that as I didn't get to their wedding. David, as far as I know, is a chaplain in Mpls. I only hear from Carole, Gerald, & Mimi. I don't have Anita or Joyce's addresses. Oh yes & Dick's & he always writes a note. He still does a little where he worked. The name won't come to me. And Charles & it's always late.
Larry starts soccer on Thurs. so they'll come on Wed. for awhile. Kim can't come this week, as a group of gals get together on a Wed. I have a beef roast in the freezer & will put it in the crock pot. Wed a.m.
My late New Year's resolution is making plans for Fri. nite meals. When it comes to Fri, I don't want to make a meal. Last nite (I have a calendar) I planned meals & I filled it up pretty much for Jan. meals. This way I should have the needs on hand. Hope I stick to it. By this time I should realize I'm not eating out Fri. nites anymore. One Fri. nite was vacant so I put pizza in there. I tried calling for pizza last nite but it was always busy so I gave up & fixed leftovers. Dale is pretty good to eat what I put before him & not complaining.
The puzzle I'm working on isn't going together very easily. But I keep at it & there is no rush to finish it. It teaches me patience.
Sheila's mother came home from the hosp. yesterday. Getting help isn't easy & the 3 girls are at their wits end. The mother probably won't be around long. Sh e is full of cancer & it is very painful. She ruled the roost & her husband doesn't know how to make meals. It's not a easy time for the family.
To me & probably Millie the word pathetic means feeling sorry for the situation. Gen was the smart one. Before her marriage she was sec'y to the Bank pres. Later she managed a lawyer's, I think it was a lawyer, but I'm not sure, office so she was very capable. She used tl help count the offerings at church, but they had to tell Ed she couldn't help anymore so it's another sad situation. How thankful I am for my health.
Barb is up now. After she goes to Bert's we'll go to to the drug store for my meds & then to the Mall. I have a list of things I need, plastic bags, etc.
Barb got a sale catalog from Woman's clothes. I saw 2 tops I liked. Barb ordered a jacket & they said if you order more, it will be 15% off so she remembered one top I wanted & got it, but forgot about the 2nd one. So if I really want it, I'll have to get busy & order it. (The order came -- my top was the wrong one -- she looked at the wrong top. A reorder is needed.)
Mon. Jan. 10
Enjoyed reading your library report & a good one it is. Dad was always glad when all the report for the annual mtg. were written up, including the ones he had to send to synod, with all the stats. The church's new secy. came at a hard time with all the reports to type up & get them ready for the annual mtg, Jan. 23rd. She also takes care of hte financial end of the church & that is a big job.
I know your appetite for "hot" foods changed after you left home & our bland foods. But I make meals the way I was brought up & Carl had the same type of food. On your own, all of you have "pepped up" your food. Dale not so much being at home, but he likes it -- hot stuff that is. When Barb makes chili, Dale has some, but not me. Too highly seasoned.
Really age is just a state of mind. When you are 20 or 25 years older you'll look back & wish you were 55 again. I look back & sometimes think it would be nice to be 60 again. But I'm 84 & glad for each day I have.
Dale got a DVD recorder & has it installed. He has the DVD player or whatever you call it.
Are you preparing the boys for when they are on their own by teaching them to make grilled cheese sandwiches? You didn't learn your ability to prepare meals at home but in your jobs as short order cook. Was it your Jr. year you started at the Chalet or was it 9th grade? Then you perfected it in Calif. It's a different world today & I know you'd never let Andy or Ed hitchhike today. You hitchhiked, Lar & friends went off in a van for a year. I'm sure it was a learning experience. Barb joined the Navy, Dale stayed home except for a semester at the technical school in Columbus. He doesn't cook, but he can do a lot of things around the house. Even Lar has at times, fixed dinner in the crockpot after Kim tells him what to do.
Tues. the 11th
I finally made a pasta dish, other than spaghetti, that came out good. I made rigatoni & added spinach to the egg, cheese, ricotta mixture & it was good. A big pan so I'll freeze some single servings. Barb didn't want what I fixed -- she had soup and grilled cheese. She burned the first one so she had to start over.
I got a perm today & I like how it came out.
Thurs A.M. My beef dinner, cooked in the crockpot (meat), was delicious. Nice dark gravy over creamy mashed pots, &^ green bean casserole. Ban. cream pie for dessert.
This A.M. we're going to Jamestown but Barb has to go to Bert's first. I'll look for Valentine's & groceries at Wegman's. We'll look around the Mall, of course! I'll mail your letter. COLD weather comes this weekend. Today it's suppose to be in the 60's. Then a drop of 30. Suppose to rain today. I hope it holds off.

This A.M. we had the S.S. Christmas program as part of the service. It is always nice to see the children. Fran Leto (she played at Dad's funeral) played this A.M. & it was good to see her. Our regular organist is having a hard time getting over the death of her daughter. Fran feels like one of us. Our loss is St. Joe's gain
I'm taking it easy today after a busy 2 days. 2 dinners & 1 breakfast to plan & prepare. Barb gave me a puzzle & I'll soon put up the card table & start it. It's pretty with a quilt & flowers scene.
Your family picture is so wonderful. All of you look so good in the picture. Thanks so much. I received a lot of nice gifts. Dale got me a Hunter Fan for the D.R. The present one is noisy. Lar & Kim gave me a set of baskets to hold the "junk" in my bedroom. This next week I will have to get things organized so it's not so messy.
We asked Bert to come over Christmas Day dinner but she didn't feel up to it, but she appreciated the invitation. Barb was over there today & they got to talking about the will & she said to Barb "You are in my will."
Kim & Lar have a busy schedule. Yesterday they were her at 10 A.M. for breakfast & gifts. 2 pm they were at friends: Nancy & family at Nancy's mom Barb Jacobs for lobster. Barb J. ordered it from Maine & it is flown in. Here at 5:30 for dinner. When they left they were going to Betsy's (Moran) for gift exchange. Before they came here Christmas Eve they were at Betsy's mom for drinks & shrimp. They said they are busy all week with get togethers.
The Steelers won today but it wasn't on our TV. We are watching the Bills at San Fran & they are ahead 7-0 right now. Next week the Steelers are at Buff & Barb thinks Dale & I shold root for the Bills so they get into the playoffs. I don't agree. I'm not really a football fan (baseball is my game, Go Mets!) but seeing the Steelers are doing so well I have to, as a Pennsylvanian, root for them! I should say as a western Pennsylvanian, I should root for them.
Barb was so pleased to hear Andy liked her gift to him. She saw it in a catalog & sent for it & we thought it was so nice. Hope Ed likes his gift from Barb. I forgot to ask if you liked your watch.
Just a few thoughts on Mon A.M. This is Dale's early week & I'm in no rush to start my chores. We were discussing where to hang your picture. Barb wants me to take the wall clock down (she hates the ticking) & hang it there. But I like the clock, so I'll take down pictures on the wall by the stairs & hang it there. I want to be able to see it when I go upstairs.
Tues. Dec. 28
At Christmas, Kim mentioned Betsy (your classmate) gave her some hand cream, from Body & Bath Works & she liked it very much. Today Barb & I went to the Mall & headed to Body & Bath & found the cream. For dry hands. Tried it & like it a lot.
I hung your picture where I can see it every time I go upstairs. Today the Schwan man came & I always buy chicken breasts. Today I showed him my son's family picture -- the small one. Then he showed me a picture of his wife, him & their 4 year old son. A very nice family picture & you could see he was proud to show it to me. The boys is 4 years old & looks like his daddy.
Dec 31. New Year's Eve
I had a letter ready to go & I don't think it got mailed & I can't find it.
Last nite we were at Lar & Kim's & we had a nice time together. They have a beautiful tree & many decorations including her Santas.
Today I took the picture & showed it to Sheila -- she hears a lot about you folks. She is very upset as her mother is full of cancer; she is in the hosp. & wants to go home & help is hard to find. There is no hope that she will improve. Only 68.
I heard from my friend in Auburn. Her husband died just before Thanksgiving. I didn't send her a card as I didn't hear last year. But I will write to her soon. Just heard from a friend in Gt. Falls so I'll have another letter to write.
We're going overtown this aft. so I'll be sure to mail this.

The maze sounds very interesting.
Our electricity has gone out 3 times recently, yesterday being the 3rd time. IT's back in 15 or 20 minutes. It means changing clocks -- so we did it twice yesterday. End of day light savings.
Mon. Nov. 1
This is Dale's early week so I was up early & after getting things ready for breakfast, I started to make brownies. Why? I got a perm today & I wanted to bring some for Sheila & Sue as a late trick or treat. I'm glad to have curl in my hair again.
Barb wants to be at the polls early Tues. A.M. She thinks there will be a good turnout & wants to beat the crowd.
Dale has to go to Rochester Thurs & Fri, the 4th & 5th, for schooling. Another fellow will go with him. He'll miss Lar & Kim on Thurs. Yesterday Lar tilled the soil in the garden. Barb was pleased. She had gotten "stuff" to enrich the soil. Hopefully we'll have summer next year so the garden yield will be better.
8:07 Election Day
I'm waiting for Barb so we can vote. She wants to go early. At least we can forget the TV ads & phone calls for awhile.
Warren H. called yesterday. He doesn't have to go to the dentist on Wed. He serves a small church & a member would like Communion on Wed. as her son is home. So they asked if Thurs. would be OK. I said yes -- it will make for a busy day as Lar & Kim come Thurs. nite. I'll have the same menu with a few changes to make it easier. Like baked potatoes for one. I make a meal as it is easier than planning a luncheon.
Our voting is over. I was 145. It is a large room & 3 voting areas are in the room. Now that I've been out I don't feel like doing anything & it's not even ( A.M. I'll have a cup of coffee & that should spur me on. Maybe, maybe not.
Thurs A.M., the 4th
Last nite I awoke about 2 AM & went to the bathroom, back to sleep. Awake about 3:20. Turned over & back to sleep to be awoken by Dale turning the bedroom light on. He was ready to go -- didn't want to wake me, but afraid I'd be made if he didn't. He was right. I jumped up, fixed some snacks & he was off to pick up the other fellow in Jamestown. Now they should be in class, 8:30 A.M.
Went back to bed for an hour & got up at 6. I ate, read the paper, did dishes & wiped off the counters, moving things to do a good job. Got the garbage out, had another cup of coffee & decided to write more in this letter.
Naturally Barb was very unhappy with the results of the election. I'm sure it is the same with you folks. Already the paper writes candidates are being thought of for both parties. Please give us a little break from all the ads & calls. We still got calls Tues. aft. & we had already voted. I don't like to be interrupted when watching my soaps!!! Too bad, huh?
It doesn't look like there will be any hockey this year. The All Star game was cancelled. I like to watch that -- the skills part. They won't agree to a pay limit -- can't get the correct word.
Fri I see the dentist at 10:30 A.M. & I hope I won't have to wait too long. Lost a filling.
Back to Tues. I did do some work. The kitchen cabinets needed cleaning. I used the orange 409, spray it on, clean with a sponge & wipe it off with an old towel. Voila! A nice shine & not too hard to do. So they look nicer for company. Hollertz's don't go much for desserts. I made the Russian Tcakes, one of many names they have, as Dale like them & took some today for a snack. Fri. aft. I hope to make Spritz but I'll also make a pumpkin pie so I'll have dessert for supper. I got lazy & tried Pillsbury pie crust & it is good. I won't use it all the time, but it sure makes it easier. Esp. if in a hurry. OK so I'm lazy! Old ladies have a right to be lazy. I'm making a pie for supper -- trying the cranberry pecan pie using the Pills. crust! Better get going.
Still Thurs. Kim was more herself tonite even saying Torey is getting old. Maybe she has come to realize animals don't last forever either.
They liked the cranberry pecan pie. It is good, but the crust stuck a bit to the pan. Sometimes I grease or Pam the pan but not this time.
Three weeks from today we'll be eating turkey.

We're getting a little rain & Dale put fertilizer on the lawn. With all the rain, our lawn stayed pretty nice this summer.
Finished the puzzle, finally. Started another one. The card table is getting to be a permanent fixture in the living room.
This A.M. I made apple bread for Dale's A.M. snack & dinner rolls.
During Cot. I'm planning to ask Benson's for lunch. I'm thinking of the 13th, a Wed. I have to make the decision & then follow thru. I'll have chicken, scalloped pot., a jello salad, & pumpkin pie. I saw a recipe for a different pie using Knox gelatin -- a one crust pie.
I'm starting to make a list for when we go to Erie. Now that you aren't going to football games, maybe you can think of Christmas ideas -- gift suggestions for Barb, Dale, Lar & Kim to give. I still plan to give gifts of cash plus a small gift to open. We'll be starting our shopping soon.
I think I mentioned a recipe from Taste of Home. A cranberry-pecan pie. Kim thinks it's a good one. A different combination but should be good.
At church we have a cookie walk & soup & pie luncheon in Dec. The 4th & I always make 2 pies & a batch of cookies. One of the members wants to have a smorgasbord. He's a good cook & it would be fun to go to one again. I might (if they have it) ask Joyce O'Connor to be my guest. Maybe I can get the family to go.
Did I write Dale's computer had a virus. The fellow came over & it took him 2 evenings to fix it, etc. It cost Dale $100.00 Last nite he was looking at pictures he took 3 yrs. at the Lake. On the TV & he could enlarge the photo & the color was beautiful as well as the scenery.
Sheila & Sue had a billboard put up advertising about their shop -- on the way to Jamestown. Sheila said it's very colorful to catch the eye. I'll have to look for it the next time we go to Jamestown. She's been in the business 21 years & Sue 27 yrs. Sue is Dale's age.
A grade school boy was selling calendars for his school. Title God's Earth so I don't think it was a public school. An appointment calendar & I'm sure it goes to a good cause. They are very nice. $6.00. There are Bible verses for each Sun. They are from the King James Version. I like my New English Bible in modern language.
Sun A.M. Last nite Barb was having a snack in the kitchen, Dale was upstairs, & I was doing my puzzle. Then we heard the most piercing noise & we didn't know where it was coming from & it went on & on. Finally Dale remembered he put a water alarm under the kitchen sink & it goes off if water is leaking. It wasn't much & Dale had it fixed in no time. But, oh my ears.
We've been watching football. Buffalo lost & I see Green Bay lost. Dale's team Pittsburgh won & the Mets ended the season with a win. I'm not sure whom I'll root for but I like Anaheim for the A.L. U& Minn. 2nd. I think St. Louis should win for the N.L. We will see.
Thurs. Oct 7
Our neighbors Dan & Sally Neizmik first had a Kerry-Edwards sign by the rose garden. A few days later there was a 2nd sign -- Bush-Cheney. Barb wondered what was going on. Sally & their 2 adult children are for Kerry & Dan is for Bush. A divided household! The USA Today -- the 7th -- has a story about another divided family.
Bert's refrigerator gave up the ghost & she had to buy a new one. Anything new bothers her -- everything in the house can't change.
I'm enjoying the playoffs. The only announcers I like are Joe Morgan & Jon - his name won't come. I use the mute button when they have 3 announcers (ESPN) & they try to outdo each other.
Lar & Kim are fine -- they'll get a new lease car on Sat. the 9th. Same make -- an 04. 05s are in but the lease would be higher. This one will cost more than the last one. This time they're getting it in Jamestown -- usually it's DuBois. Torey is getting old. Kim cant walk as fast with him anymore. Today they could only go as far as Big Joe's on their walk.
I won't see the end of the baseball game tonite. It's soon bedtime & I'm ready for it.

Here it is Thurs & I'm just starting a letter. Sheila is going to the King of Prussia Mall tomorrow so I had my hair done today. They are so busy they're working til 10 pm. They hate to turn anyone away. Last Sat. they had to turn down 3 perms. They are looking for another girl. Interviewed 2 girls but found them wanting.
Today Larry & Kim are going to a soccer game in Pittsburgh with another couple. They will stay overnite & be home by noon tomorrow. Betsy Griffin will take care of Torey -- also when they go to Fla.
Yesterday we went to the library & I got 2 books. Finished Lavyrle Spencer's book Separate Beds & it was a good book. Also got Some Pleasure There to Find by Elizabeth Rossiter. No good. Then I went to the bank to cash a check & to Bilo's.
I sure hope that we will have less rain in Aug. We need sunshine to dry things up. Even the veggies aren't growing.
My order from Penney's came & I'm pleased.
Barb gets so sock from the chemo, that she decided to give it up, come what may. I don't know what to think but it is her decision. I don't like it, but what can I do. Hope it's not a mistake.
I've written about Dale fixing the leak in the basement. We had a heavy rain this past week &^ no water. So it is fixed. Now he's painting the wall. It is to the 4 of you advantage to keep the house in good order & Dale is doing his part.
Yesterday Ted Benson called. He & Pat would be in Warren & wondered if I'd go out to lunch with them. I never say no. We went to Perkins & had a nice visit. She is in her 70's but had to have a hysterectomy but all is well. No cancer. She did have a lump removed from her breast 17 years ago. She gets real upset when she has to see a Dr. In the car she said "I can feel my blood pressure going down." Next time they come to Warren, I'd like them to come to lunch here. They always pay for my lunch.
I wrote a letter to Ruth to enclose in a birthday card.
Fri. A.M. 7:30. All is quiet here. Dale is at work & Barb is still in bed. I just read the lessons for Sun. I like to think how the pastor might preach on the Gospel.
Just made a menu for when Pat & Ted come to lunch -- probably in Sept. Half the fun for me is the planning.
The new bridge is 10-14 days behind its schedule due to all the rain & they had to open the Dam to release waters & that didn't help. Maybe a nice fall, hopefully, will help. Suppose to open the middle of Nov. 21st, I think.

I'm starting a letter early so I get the subject right. Barb had a blood test today & her white blood cell count is low & that makes Barb's body defense against infection dangerous. Tomorrow, Sat, she starts a series of 5 shots. And to protect her from infection she can't go to the Mall or places where people are.
We went to the Mall but she stayed in the car. On the way home we noticed Hatch Patch had fresh corn. So I got some. And yellow squash. We have zucchini from the garden. Mixed they are so good.
I got my hair cut today & it feels so good to have it shorter. Sheila was saying they are doing very good in their business. With their own business almost a year old, they can see that Jerry wasn't very fair to his workers financially. He is back doing haircuts etc. but isn't getting his former customers back. He never bothered to let them know he was closing his shop. Sheila & Sue "inherited" many of the customers & they choose to stay with S&^S. It's a dog eat dog world.
Are you as happy as Barb is with Kerry's choice of V.P. to be Edwards? I mute ALL political ads. Next in line is all the "Carb" ads. The companies have to get on the band wagon & get more moola!
Barb has lost weight & hopes to stay at her present weight.
Did you notice the Mets might get a Cuban pitcher (if he passes his physical) & he could be ready before the end of the season. 23 years old. Defected last year, I think. They've agreed on a contract.
Kim was telling us about her sister in Fla. She quit smoking & hopes it's for good. She was smoking & blew smoke in her son's face. He said, "Mom, you know I asked you not to blow smoke in my direction." Both kids are anti smoke. That nite her sister had a dream she quit smoking. The next A.M. she had her coffee minus the cigarette. She is keeping up on no smoking. Kim hopes it really works this time. Her husband smokes & wants to quit but he is overweight & wants to wait til he loses weight.
Sat. the 10th
In one week you'll be busy, busy, busy as well as the preceding 2 weeks.
We hope you'll be able to make it home. I'm already dreaming about menus, etc It is fun to make plans even if they don't come true.
My sleep schedule has changed. I awaken around 5-6 A.M. This A.M. I was up at 5:45. Got the table set & ready for breakfast. I ate my cereal & decided to make coffee cake. Dale is on vacation this coming week but he said he could still have an A.M. snack. Baked choc. chip cookies I started last nite & put the dough in the fridge. Now I'm waiting for Dale to come so I can fix his Sat lunch. Scrambled eggs, sausage links & English muffins.
Last Thurs I only had 3 dinner rolls & since it is a cooler day, I just set dinner rolls. Have to bake when the weather is cool. Suppose to warm up some. T his summer is so much different for me. Last year I was really lazy. This year it is much easier to do my tasks. Of course baking is fun work. That fall must have done me in more than I realized.
Did the new furniture for the family room arrive. You mention "and stretched out on the couch in the family room..."
I mentioned Dale is on vacation starting now. He was asked if he'd like to go to school next Fri. What was that person thinking? Even if you don't have special plans no one wants to give up a day of their vacation. Naturally Dale said "No thanks!"
Mon. the 12th
Dale was up early as he needed to get a blood test before breakfast. The Dr. tho't his cholesterol was a bit high & wanted to check.
Tues the 13th
I rained yesterday, really hard. So Dale worked on his El Camino. He's never finished it.
Today it is nice so this aft. he went to Jamestown. Barb & I plan to go to Jamestown on Thurs.
Today Barb saw the Dr. She didn't need the 5th shot. Her blood is normal now. She will have the 2nd chemotherapy on Wed. the 21st. That way she'll have Mon. & Tues. if she wants to go to Bert's or Lynn's. Bert called again last nite to see how Barb is. S he isn't sure when she'll be home. She is seeing her Dr. in NYC.
Kim & Lar won't be coming this Thurs. as they have other plans.
I started a puzzle -- a harder one. I started it once & Barb finished it. This time I'm sticking to it. It is mostly tall tree trunks with red flowers at the base of the trees. It will test my patience. Barb is helping some.
Fri. A.M. the 16th. Yesterday we went to the Mall in Jamestown or rather Lakewood. Bon Ton was having a sale & I got a pr. of Capri pants & 3 tops, 1 was Barb's & had to wait in line at least 15 min. to pay for them. Everyone as saying I don't really need anything but they stayed in line regardless.
Barb's hair is beginning to come out. Now it will be more real when you lose your hair.
Lar & Kim want you to stay with them if you come. Since Barb & I exchanged bedrooms there isn't much space there for bags, etc. And for about 2 weeks Barb isn't that well & is in bed a lot. But you would be here during the day for meals & we'd be together. I want to see all of you as much as possible.
We've had so much rain. Dale worked on his car & on a leak in the basement. Not much time for sunning. I hope these next 3 days will be nicer.
Hope your party had nice weather.
