I was talking to Dick Hause after church.  They are football & baseball fans & Dick said Oct. is the best month for sports.  World Series& football.  We just watched Pittsburgh get beat (good grammar?) & now Buffalo is on the screen.  I'll also turn to baseball.

I had a nice birthday.  We enjoyed our dinner at Chiodo's.  They have a no smoking section & it was full.  Ed O'Neill was there with his wife celebrating an older couple's anniversary.  He is a big guy. It always amazes me how many people Lar & Kim know when we are out.

Barb gave me a black purse; Kim & Lar gave me lottery tickets but I didn't win much.  Dale gave me automatic car door openers but first he has to put in a part to make them work.  2 of them so Barb & I will appreciate that.  I mentioned I tho't that was a nice thing to have & now we'll have it.  Lar & Kim have it on their car.

Because of siring heating prices Dale doubled what he gives me every payday.  I have been using that money as a Christmas club.  I have envelopes for my budget so I know what I'm doing.

After church today I put the electric blanket on my bed.  I'll be warmer now when I get into bed.

We plan to go to Jamestown this week -- most likely on Fri.

I finished my puzzle & Barb started one today.  She said I can work on it.

Barb ordered a cake for my birthday but she ordered 1/2 sheet cake instead of 1/4.  So I put half of it in the freezer & we still have plenty to eat.  She'll take some for Scott & Bob.  It is a good tasting cake.

Mon A.M. Oct 17

Barb cut out & instructed me to enclose the clippings from the Buff. Sun. paper.

I saw the Dr. last Fri.  Blood pressure very good & all else is fine. Got a flu shot.

Yesterday Dale put the "thing" that helps close the front screen door.  Barb had taken it off for painting.  He also planed the top of the door as it stuck a bit.  Dad installed the screen door & it didn't please Dale.  Something was in the way to make it perfect. People who get their cars worked on by Dale get an A-One job performed.

Tues. Oct 18

This A.M. Alice Nasman called me & she talked for an hour.  She wasn't in church Sun. as she wasn't feeling good.  At the end of 1 hour she said thanks for talking to me -- I don't have anyone to talk to.  She has a sister but she isn't well & doesn't want to burden her. Think I wrote that Wayne went to school to work on motorcycles & got a job in Erie.  They aren't busy during the winter so he was laid of.  Alice has to be careful because of her heart.  If I can hep by listening so be it.

This A.M., I washed the kitchen floor with a new mop.  It is a wider sponge & so easy to use.  I'm glad I got it.l

I ordered, from L. L. Bean, 2 pr. pants & a shirt for Lar.  One pr. of pants is flannel lined he likes for colder weather.  They were Kim's suggestion.  I showed the jeans (twill) to Dale & he likes them, color & all.  Olive color.  I saw a sweater at L. L. Bean I like & plan to order it as well as pants for Dale.  Sat. nite getting ready to go out to eat, Dale said "I guess I'll have to get some new clothes."  Was surprised to hear him say that.  Usually he receives clothes for gifts.  He needs to weed some clothes he never wears from his closet & give them to Goodwill.  But he hates to party with anything.

Thurs. Oct 20

Tonite I fixed oven fried chicken.  I had gotten 2 acorn squash, sliced them.  Put the slices in a dish & poured melted butter & maple syrup over them.  It was very good -- Larry loved the veggie. I did too.  Of course I baked them.  Apple crisp for dessert.

Wed. Bon Ton had a 2 day sale -- Wed & Thurs -- so we went to the Mall & did more Christmas shopping.  When I call for your birthday I'll want some suggestions for Christmas ideas!  I'll still send money for Christmas.

I'll mail this when we go to Jamestown tomorrow.

This aft. I saw the Dr.  My blood tests were all good & my blood pressure wsa 130/60 & that is very good for me.  It was higher last time in Feb.  So I will just keep taking my meds & vitamins.

Did you happen to see the amazing catch Met M. Cameron at R.F. made.  I'm sure it was repeated many times.  He was running to catch a ball, tripped & fell & put out his hand & the ball dropped right in.  A catch he never knew he would make.  It would have been a triple for Cruz, Jr. of the Rockies.  It was great.  Pedro pitched a great game.  When he was traded to the Mets I was n't sure about the deal.  It seemed he was temperamental, etc. but he fits in great with the Mets so it's nice ot have a good pitcher.

Ask Any how it feels to slide into a base just ahead of the ball.  Does he slide feet first or head first.  They say feet first is better.  The other way fingers or hands could get hurt.  Why do pitchers keep fiddling with their caps.  Taking them off & on.  The only pitch I recognize is the curve ball, maybe fast ball.

Lynn will have a garage sale tomorrow (Sat) & Barb is up there now helping her.  Barb folded clothes, etc. to help her during the week.  She put masking tape on the articles & Lynn prices them. Having to take me to the Dr. held her up -- that's her job to take me to appointments.

Shults, Wrrn. has added Toyota cards to their selling program.  Dale says they don't have enough space for all the cars now, & tools & working area.

Today I saw a spider on the stove -- went for a paper towel to kill it but Dale let it live.  He has a thing for spiders.  For one summer he had a spider web in the garage & kept it safe & even tried to feed it.  I was a big one.

Sat. aft the 4th

This A.M. we went to Sears & before I do anything I'll see if something can be done to our washer.  The salesman said they could fix this problem.  I thought this would be my last washing machine.

Then we went nto Lawn & Garden as Barb needed more garden stuff.

We ended up at the Mall.  The earrings Barb likes were on sale.  She got 2 prs. & I got some white earrings.  I got some paper supplies at theh 1.00 store.  Kim says she gets all her paper supplies & cleaners there.  A better buy.

Sun. aft.

While watching the Mets they said there would be a special (paper) on the Mets.  So Barb got a N.Y. Times (that was the paper) but it must have been for the local area.  But I found the "sun Styles " had a couple of interesting article & wondered if you read them.  On p. 11 "A Bad Case of Puppy Love".  It was cute.  P. 3 "Love Thy Busybody".  Another cute one.  Stories like you might write.

This aft. I watched Pitts. beat the Braves & Pitts. took the series.  They are doing well & I like Pitts announcers.  The Mets were rained out Sat. so there is a doubleheader going on now 4 pm.  Mets will be on ESPN at 8 pm.  Mets are playing San Fran & the Mets are improving.

I see the "George" says the Yankees must improve.  If they don't will there be a new mgr?  Who cares, not me.  Their skid makes me happy.

Our pastor was in church today -- Pastor Ray Forstrum had the service. She made an announcement.  The baby is home but they can't have any visitors for 2 weeks & the baby can't go out in a crowd for 2 weeks. s We won't see her until the middle of July.  She will be on maternity leave.

Wed. A.M. the 8th

Summer has arrived.  There are buds on the rose bushes & the plants Barb planted from seed are coming along fine.  I've sat on the front porch & it is nice to watch the birds, etc.

Did Andy notice (as of this A.M.) that Atl. & N.Y.M. are tied for 2nd place with Wn. in 1st place.  Looks good to me. (Didn't last long.  Fri. the 9th)

School is over on Fri. the 10th.  I said to Barb "I bet Scott won't go to school on Fri."  Her reply, "Oh no, he'll want to see his friends."  I was right (for once) he won't go to school on Fri.

Just wrote a note to Gen to add to her birthday card.  She will be 83 on Mon.  She won't realize it is her birthday until John tells her.  She doesn't know how old she is.  It's so sad.

Thanks for the pictures.  Andy looks nice in his baseball uniform.  When does he start his summer job.  What about Ed -- will he get a summer job.

Collins on Conewango have their home up for sale.  It's probably getting to be too much for him to keep up.  It will be interesting to see if it sells before Frank's does.  (Across the st.)  Collins keeps his property in top condition.  Frank's yard upkeep leaves a lot to be desired.

This A.M. Dale asked me if I heard them painting the crosswalk lines about 1:30 A.M. (not much traffic).  He said the machine was so noisy it woke him up & Barb as well.  I didn't hear a thing.  Am I losing my hearing -- I don't think so -- I was really tired last nite & must have been in the deep sleep cycle.

I see the Mets picked a pitcher in the draft who is suppose to be pretty good.  Time will tell.  A few years ago, it seems to me they tho't that about Isringhausen & 2 others but they didn't work out as regular pitchers.  It seems only to happen for the Braves.  Wed. aft. & I'm watching Toronto at the Cubs -- after I watched "As the World Turns" which is getting very exciting.  Me & my soaps!

I took the easy way out & got pizza for supper, delivered from Pizza Hut.  The one who delivered it used to work at Shults & recognized Dale's car.  The Monte Carlo.  He said "that's Dale's car & I want it!"  More than one would like the car but he's not selling it.

It is spring like today, but only for a day.  It is suppose to get colder with flurries.  Makes one think of spring.

This A.M. I had to have a blood test & I couldn't eat breakfast.  I don't go to the hosp. anymore.  It's done at the Dr. offices & I like that better.  Saw the Dr. last Fri. & all is well. My blood pressure was good.

Ed Africa is still in Warren.  Mrs. Gustafson, up the st., told me she had talked to him.  He doesn't know when he'll leave Warren.  He has to go to Nev. to renew the lease on his apt. He thinks he might stay here for another year.  Guess he has Warren in his blood.

Sheila's grandmother died so Sue did my hair last week. She was suppose to go to Pittsburgh last weekend with her husband to see his grandfather who is ailing.  She couldn't go as the funeral was that Sat.  Her grandmother was 93.  Her paternal grandmother.

I have a turkey breast for tomorrow when Lar & Kim come.  Celebrate a late Valentine's.  We had steaks last nite -- Barb and I at at 6 pm.  Dale didn't come home til 7 pm.  He was working on his car.  He tilled his own steak.

At noon today, he said some fellows might be laid off.  Not enough work to go around.

Remember Chris Johnson in your class -- her mother Ethel is in the Rouse Home & will be 90 on Sat.  The 2 girls will have a party for her.  I sent a card as I won't get there to wish her a Happy Birthday.

Wed. nite Feb 16

I'm relaxing a bit after all is cleaned up.  Our meal was delicious, if I say so myself.  I like a turkey roast -- it's easier to fix.  Tomorrow nite Dale & I will have leftovers & there will be turkey for sandwiches.  Kim had a cold & didn't feel that good.  Barb didn't feel good this A.M. but by aft. Barb felt better.  Scott had a book report for tomorrow and Barb had to help him with that.

We woke up to snow.  Dale said driving to work was bad as it began to freeze.  The roads hadn't been plowed or salted.  Kim said the same driving to Sheffield.  Dale was surprised they didn't delay school but the storm came on so fast they didn't realize the roads were that bad.

Bert has a lap computer & she told Barb she could take it home to use.  Barb plans to as she would like to learn more about it.

Barb wonders if you took her camera to be fixed.

No school next Mon. so we might go to Jamestown.  We'll leave bout 11 A.M. as Barb wants to go to Bert's first.  That will give me a chance to do some of my Mon. chores.  We'll eat lunch there.  My choice of eating place this time.

Thurs. the 17th

I'm sitting here, the TV is on to the Weather Channel & I'm trying to think of things to write about.  I you watch the weather channel you know what our weather is about.  Cold & snow flurries.

Buffalo is having problems -- not enough money & the people don't want a raise in sales taxes.  So a lot of people are being laid off, parks are closed & they think the libraries will be cut.  Some people think they need to cut people in gov't.  They checked & found that Buff. has a higher percentage of gov't workers than Chicago & Chicago has a much larger population.  Guess all cities are in the same situation.

Marisa didn't do well at all in high school but now she goes to Jamestown College & is doing very well.  She said it is so different than hi school  She likes school now.

It's early to bed tonite as I had trouble getting to sleep last nite.

All is well with us. With love to all.

Sunday, September 26, 2004

Thanks so much for the pictures of Andy.  They are so good -- he has a nice smile.  Comparing with last year's picture you can see changes.  Your son is growing up.

I've been receiving calls & literature for hearing aids but they just go into the "circular" file.  I wonder how they got your name -- I guess you can get all kinds of info thru the computer. The info you sent on the house & families proves that.

Frank, across the st., took down the grape vines & arbor in their backyard & it looks so nice & gives more yard space.  This weekend his "ex" was helping him & today she cleared out the front corner that had grown wild with weeds.  They overplanted when they did that.  I'm sure that didn't help when people came to see the house.  They might have to cut the price again.  Faye is the one holding out.

Thurs. nite when Kim saw the 5 mum plants, she couldn't believe they were 5/10.00.  The Sat. before she got 2/10.00 & they are smaller pots.  It must have been a one-day special. They have a new principal & vice principal at Sheffield & he is not liked.  He closes his office door & does nothing.  The Vice p., a woman, does all the work.  The office sec'y has a sign on her desk M.Y.O.B. to keep her mouth shut.  He lifts weights during gym classes & showers.  A teacher who will retire next June is ready to go to the superintendent & tell him the story.  Last year he was at Warren Hi.  If he stays around, Kim is thinking about an opening at Warren Hi next year, even tho she'd like to stay put.

We enjoyed our dinner at the Fernwood.  Barb & I had the fish fry & the fish is delicious, but I'm sure it can't compare to Wi's fish dinners.  Dale had the steak-shrimp shish kabob & he liked it but it wasn't quite as good as he had before.  Maybe there was a different chef.

Betty Casey & some of her family were with her.  Sandy who is divorced, the younger sister whose name I don't remember & her husband.  Son Joe & 2nd wife.  Joe was married to Laura Hause & had 3 children with her.  They were with them today & the daughter looks just like Laura.  They started dating in 9th grade.  But it didn't last.

For once I have menus planned for the whole week.  Hope I stick to them.  Tues. is Dale's long day & it's also Bible Study at 11:15 A.M. followed by a potluck.  The pastor will be the teacher.  Dale said it would be OK with him.  It's cool enough for soup & that adds to his meal.  And I'll have snacks ready for him.  Even if he is 47, I'm still his mother & he does good things for me & I reciprocate.

The only one who caused my gray hairs was Dale. I'd tell him he couldn't go out on a school nite & he'd disregard it & go out the little bedroom, onto the roof & jump to the ground.  I know a lot of your weekends were spent in N.Y. area but I figured you had common sense & wouldn't overdo it.  Or was I one of those with my head in the sand?  Hoping for the best. After a few struggles -- if that's the right word -- I think you all turned out pretty well. Thanks to JoAnna, I know you did!

Wed. Sept 29.

Mon. when I went for my eye appts. it was cancelled, the Dr. was at a meeting.  The computer said appt. cancelled by the patient & that made me made.  Someone made an error & blamed me.  New appt. Oct 11.   Barb said that's the day we're going to Erie.  I called & said I had an appt. so it will be Oct. 25th.

Dale had a 10 A.M. appt. to have his eyes examined & he needs new lenses.  He doesn't go to the medical Dr.  Barb had an 11:15 appt. at the same place.  The lady asked if she wanted it under Dale's name & his insurance.  Barb said "He's my brother."  Dale can get time off for Dr.'s appt.

You know I would walk over the 5th to mail letters.  They took that mail box away.  I know the post man will pick up letters left by our mailbox so maybe I'll be doing that.  I'll miss walking over there.

I finally got one up on Barb.  She got groceries for me.  Costs $24.11 & I had given her $25.00.  She said I'll give you 89 cents & you'll owe me 1.00.  I didn't agree.  She even accused me of being like Scott in math.  Finally I got thru to her.  I'd give her 11 cents & she'd give me 1.00.

Scott got his grades & they were bad.  He always says he doesn't have any homework when he dos.  When he does homework he rushes thru & doesn't check.  Barb is suppose to help him & she does.  but he is very stubborn & doesn't want her telling him what to do.  Lynn cares but not enough to keep a check on his work.  And she won't tell the teachers he has ADHD or whatever the letters are.

I'm watching the Mets at Atlanta (1 pm game) & the Mets are 3-2 so far!  They did win 1 game so it's 1-1.  It's almost over & then the playoffs & World Series.  I hope St. Louis takes it all. They've been the bst all summer.  Exciting end for the N.L. & wild card.

Fri A.M.  Ready to get my hair done including a trim.  6 weeks since my perm.  Times sure flies.

Monday, February 23, 2004

I was mistaken -- last week Dale went to Pittsburgh for schooling & Utes A.M., he & Mark go to Pitts again, this time for 2 days.  He'll take a lunch again but he isn't sure what will happen.  Mark is married & has 2 children & I guess money is tight.  Not for Dale living at home -- his day will come.

I always read your letter fast the first time & then read it again slower to savor the news.  I laughed both time when I read, "I'm sure you're finding this incident tremendously amusing, Mom."  As I read it to Dale -- I said, I have to have one child with children so they can see what it is to raise children.  More fun.  You are the lucky one, you & JoAnna, to have 2 nice sons -- they do bring "sun" into your lives.

This A.M. we went to Jamestown -- a short trip.  I wanted to return one of the sweaters I got.  I didn't like how it fit around the hips.  I did one load of wash before we left & got Dale's bed made up clean. Now the 3rd load -- towels -- are about set to go in the dryer.  After lunch I cleaned the bathroom.

I've lost some weight & my slacks are too large so I've been buying new ones.  Got a pr. this A.M. at Sears & a knit top.  We didn't go into Penney's -- their styles are all for the younger group.  A while ago I got a sweater red & blue poppys on a black background.  It looked bare around the neck.  So last Sat. I got a red expensive scarf & it looks nice with the sweater. Wore it to church yesterday & it felt good.  Today I got a blouse at Bon Ton -- alight salmon color & it is worn over the pants.  3/4 length sleeves.  It's like the 2 tops Barb bot.

We went to Walmarts this A.M. -- heavens forbid -- & Barb got more yarn.  She finished Marisa's & started one for herself.  She got yarn for one for Kim -- she'd like a maroon afghan.  We also got cranberry juice.

I've started another puzzle -- an old one.  Another floral.

Sat. nite we had subs from Quizno's.  They were good -- I had the traditional -- beef, ham & turkey.  Barb & Dale had the Philly cheese steak.  We liked them & we'll try them again.

Wed. A.M. the 25

Dale is at school so I slept in a bit til 7 A.M.  But he forgot to turn off his alarm & it went off at 4:30 A.M.  I shut it off & was able to go back to sleep.  I'm taking it easy today -- just preparing things for dinner -- Lar & Kim come (my tho'ts got ahead of my hand) -- Dale will be home about 6:45 PM.  Tues A.M. the weather wasn't so good.  Pittsburgh was fogged in. Today will be sunny & warmer.  I'll be glad to see the snow melt away.

Yesterday I made applesauce & choc. cake for tonite.  Of course I sampled the case last nite.

At dinner tonite Lar & Dale were talking about the 2006 Pontiac Solstice, a sport car bargain for about $20,000. Dale's magazine Automobile had a 2 page picture.  Lar says that it's his next car.  It's a 2 seater.  Kim asked is she could have the Meata -- is that spelled correctly, & Lar said yes.  He has 3 more payments on his back hoe & he thinks the truck will hold out for awhile.  The Solstice is just a dream now.  It doesn't come out til summer of '05.

Larry was sick Mon & Tues.  The flue.  He said he thinks he'll get a flu shot next year.  He always seems to get the flu for a few days.  He'll take me to the Dr. tomorrow as Barb has to work at Lynn's.  I'll have to remember to get a Fri. appt -- the 2 or 4 Fri. & then  Barb can take me.

Bert will be back next Wed. & she will be needing more help around the dinner hour.  She won't be able to climb the stairs as often as she did.  She is too think & doesn't have any resistance  to cold, etc.

Fri the 26th

Saw the Dr today.  First a physician -- I can't recall the word, examined me first.  Then the (Physician Practitioner.  Finally got it!) Dr. came in & examined me.  I see him in 3 months. The nice thing -- I can have my blood tests in the office.  He also wants me to have a mammogram but I call for the appt. myself.  I miss Dr. McNett.  My blood pressure was good.  I weight 145 lbs. so I've lost weight.  I'm eating less, but I still like sweets.  That's why I've needed slacks that fit.

Sunday, June 8, 2003

Just finished watching Seattle cream the Mets.  1st game of a double header.  We don't get the 2nd game, so I turned Fox Sports Pittsburgh & will watch Pittsburgh 3, Atlanta 2, in the 5th.

Marie Mathis called me to let me know Pastor Risher died Sat.  We talked about a new pastor & she heard some don't want a woman pastor.

Barb won't be taking care of Scott during the summer so we plan to go to Jamestown Mon. A.M. & she'll go to Bert's in aft.  We'll grocery shop at Wegman's.  Wed aft. I see Dr. McNett & Thurs. A.M. I go to Dr. Walters, dentist.  It will be a cut up week.

Last Fri. I got 2 library books & read them already.  An Accidental Woman by Barbara Delinsky & Kate Hannigan's Daughter by Catherine Cookson.  Both were excellent -- enjoyable.

Barb has had bifocals for some time.  For when she knits & watches TV.  I talk about getting sun glasses but never do anything.  I haven't called to have my eyes checked because I can't walk home & Barb can't always pick me up.  Next Tues. Kim will take me to the Dr. & Barb will pick me up.  They say the bridge will come down around the first of July.  They can't wait too long without a bridge being erected.

Mon. the 9th

We had heavy rain last nite & a little got into the basement so Dale is cleaning it up now.

This A.M. we went to Jamestown.  A fast trip -- I got a girdle & a purse at Bon Ton. Half price plus a 20% off coupon so they were good buys.  Barb found a top she liked.  We walked thru Sears but didn't stop.  On to Wegman's.  We got some Paul Newman ginger snaps & they are so good.  Cream filling.  We'll buy them again.  So good if you like molasses.

Had planned to have hamburgers tonite but Barb asked me to hold off a day.  She planned to have leftover pizza & a salad.  So I had to decide what to have.  I had frozen ravioli so I cooked it, put it in spaghetti sauce & heated it up in the microwave.  So easy & so good, along with a salad.

Gary Risher was only 56 years old.  He had been sick for 2 years & it sounded like he just gave up.

Last nite I watched the Yankees at the Cubs in Chicago & what an exciting game.  The Cubs pitcher was so good for 6 innings when I turned off the TV in the bedroom.  But I couldn't get to sleep so I decided to watch the game -- it was the 89th inning & the Yankees were getting runs, but the Cubs held them off.  It made me happy.  The Braves keep winning -- and the Mets win one & lose many more.  Too many injuries.

It's been a nice day & I got my chores completed.

Tues. the 10th

Barb rode her bike this late aft. & she was in front of the state hosp. when a groundhog crossed her path & she rode over it & it threw her off her bike.  She landed on her back & laid there for a minute or two.  A lady came to check & Barb said she was OK & rode home. The wheels on the bike wobbled so she'll have to have it checked.  She is sore all over & it hurts to walk. She is using the cane I got for Dad.  She'll be sore for awhile.

About 8:30 this A>M. Warren H. called telling me about going out to lunch in Pittsfield.  The old hotel now the Acock Inn.  They will pick me up.  Warren told me he talked with a pastor friend from the O.C. area from 11 p.m. to 12:15 A.M.  Then he decided to watched TV & didn't get to bed until 2:45 A.M.  And Ted Benson woke him up with an early morning call to tell him our friends in Ohio can't come this time so they changed where we'll have lunch. Then Warren called me.

Dale won't be home for lunch either Thurs. or Fri.  Thurs. they'll have a lunch mtg. to talk about health insurance.  It has been raised 50% & they're hoping to change companies.  Fri. will be their regularly monthly work mtg.  He wants me to pack a sandwich for him on Thurs. as he doesn't know if there will be food at that mtg.  They always have pizza at the work mtg.

Wed the 11th

Barb is still sore but is feeling better.  Kim took me to the Dr. & waited for me.  We went Pa. Ave W & came home Dorcon Rd.  There was so much traffic going over.  Much easier going home Dorcon Rd.

My blood pressure was higher so he gave me a new prescription & I go back in 30 days to have the nurse check my blood pressure.  Dr. McNett said this is a pill that is also good for the heart & kidneys. The bad part it can make you cough so I hope it won't bother me.  It made him cough in the aft. so he had to go to another pill that is more expensive.  The new pill I'll take isn't that expensive -- none of my prescriptions are, so I'm lucky that way.

Everyone remarks about the rainy weather.  Even at noon Dale wondered when the sun will shine. It does get a person down. Dale wants to mow the lawn -- the rain makes it grow so fast.

Just noticed another cooky recipe in the new Bon Appetit.  Oatmeal cookies with raisins, dates & walnuts.  also copies the Turtle Bars that sounds so good -- for around the holidays.  When I get a permanent I usually bring a treat for "the gang" -- they are all so nice.  Have a perm. coming up the last Mon. of June so will have to decide what to make.  When Jerry came to the house to cut Dad's hair, I always had a treat for him.

When I got weighed to day I had lost 5 lbs -- I've been cutting down on snacks.  Barb spurred me on.  She has lost weight but hasn't reached her goal yet.  I just didn't want to see the scale go up anymore.

Thurs the 12th.  I got all the work done in one visit to the Dentist & I'm glad of that.  We've had so much rain today.  Larry wasn't able to finish all eh wanted to do at Carey's   He got the lawn moved & hoped to do some trimming.

All for this session.

Houston's no-hitter against the Yankees was super, even it if took 7 pitchers!

Wisconsin Library Association members meet with Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton

The snow was south of us so we just have the cold weather.

This A.M. I made an apple pie & started veg. beef soup.  Both tasted very good.  Figured soup would go with the cold weather.

Mentioned I was to see the Dr. yesterday & all is well.  See Dr. McNett in 4 months.  Barb didn't feel good Fri. A.M. so I walked to get my hair done.  9 degrees but I bundled up & the sun was out.  Walked home from the Dr's visit so I got some exercise.

When I got home I acted on an idea in my mind.  Called Joyce O'Connor & asked if she'd be interested in watching "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with me.  She said yes, & then asked her to come for dinner. Fixed chicken, baked pot, broc., fruit salad & the leftover cherry dessert.  We had a great visit as we haven't seen each other for some time.  She exercises (walking) at the Y & a couple of the men walkers have made passes at her.  She said why are the married men the ones attracted to me.  When first widowed she wouldn't have minded dating.  She was in her late 40's when Dugey died & he was 51.  But now she isn't interested.  She is so funny talking about her experiences.  We both enjoyed the movie & had some good laughs.  I'll watch it again.  I had 2 Greek girlfriends in high school & they talked about their experiences & both spoke Greek.

Barb didn't come downstairs til noon today & spent the day in her p.j.'s.  As I was enjoying my dessert, after all was cleaned up, she came down dressed to go to BiLo.  She wanted grapes & I had a list of her.

Glad your Legislative Day turned out to be a success.  Guess Mother Nature is an Independent!

Bet it made you think of spring when you attended the Garden Expo.

No school on Mon.  Pres. Day.  But they will miss one of the days over Memorial Day due to a snow day Wed. last.  The first one in spite of our winter.

All for now.  Started a new puzzle so I'll work on that for awhile.

Oh I tho't of something.  Sam's ex wife's house burned down early last Thurs A.M.  At 2:30 A.M. she called Same & his latest gal answered the phone & wondered why she was calling Sam.  But Sam & his ex have a good relationship & when he was without a gal, he would be with her.

We enjoyed golf & watching Tiger play after a lay off.  He's on top as of Sat. nite.

Tues. the 18th

Thanks Andy & Eddie for my valentine.

We really have snow piled high but not as much as the Eastern big cities.  We got about 5-6 inches.  Lots to shovel.

Yesterday there was no school because of the holiday.  Today they had a 2 hour delay.

The main roads are clear so we were able to go to the Mall & get groceries.

Last Fri. when I walked by Beaty in the aft. I saw my first robin.  He's waiting for spring just like everyone else.

Gen called the other nite.  Next summer they'll have to get a new roof & paint the house.

We've gotten some good strawberries at the store.  From Calif.  I remember Andy loves strawberries.

I'm at the kitchen table, looking out the window at the snow piles on the fir trees.  One looks like a little lamb the way it settled on the branches.

When we looked at a window for over the kitchen sink, I would have like the kind you described you'd like.  It would have been more expensive but I've regretted I didn't push for it.

Too bad we aren't closer with Lar & Dale experienced in brick laying.  They did a nice job here but it was a big job.  (Pat & Ted commented on it again today, Thurs.)

This A.M. Bette Davis was on the Perry Mason show.  She was the lawyer while Perry was "sick" (probably on vacation) & it was good to see her again.  She was a great actress.

Thurs. evening the 20th.

This A.M. Ted Benson called & asked if they could take me out to lunch.  Of course I said yes.  They picked me up at 12:30 & we went to Perkins.  Pat said she had cabin fever & wanted to get out.  We had a nice visit & I didn't get home til 3pm.  Just in time for Perry Mason.  Pat & Ted were going to the Mall after they took me home.  I had pork loin tonite. Made the applesauce yesterday and a pecan pie this A.M.  Also made dinner rolls yesterday as well as a batch of cookies.  So things were under control so I could go out this aft.  We hadn't been together since last Nov.  So we had a lot to talk about.

When Kim was walking Torey he stepped in a puddle that had gasoline in it.  Kim didn't realize it until they smelled the gasoline.  They washed his paws but the smell still lingered so they were going to wash him again.

I didn't wear boots today as the sidewalks & roads were clear.  It was lovely to have it a little warmer & the sky was so blue.  BUT snow & colder is forecast for the weekend & colder temps.

Guess I've covered activities for this time.

Friday, March 5, 1999

I've been thinking about Cindy & Albert so was glad to hear Julianna Marie arrived safe & sound.  Thanks for the address - I want to send a card to them.

We woke up to snow & wind yesterday & there was no school.  You've probably read that the seniors are upset as they have to change the graduation date.

Tues. was my Dr. appt.  Margie, physician's assistant, checked me out.  I needed a blood test & the hosp. is close by & I didn't have to fast so I got the test & go back on Wed. for instructions if it is the thyroid.  It was a beautiful day so I walked home & enjoyed that.

Wed a representative from Hosp. Home Care came to check Carl out.  He said I definitely need help.  Yesterday someone from Hospice came but you can only have their help if the patient has 6 mo. or less to live & the Dr. must make that choice.  And Parkinson's is hard because it isn't a life killing disease.  I don't know what will happen.  The easiest thing would be to put Dad in a nursing home & that is never a choice   He stays home as long as we can care for him.  Barb & Dale are good to help.

Mark Patterson came over & we made arrangements.  We both decided on cremation previously & you can rent a casket for that.  Tues the 9th Lar & I will choice a casket.  T his way when the time comes, that process is done.  We prepare for birth so we need to prepare for death & it's easier as you reach late 70s & 80s.  It's a fact of life.

I can't remember you visiting Polk Center (new name) & I can't remember your late night house party.  Can't even remember having anything special for "munchies".  So it couldn't have been that bad, or noisy.

So Ruthie died.  A blessing as she was bad for a long time.  Someone called Mon. nite (1st) & Dale got the message as Barb & I got groceries & missed the call.  I wrote a note & sent a memorial check but it won't get mailed til tomorrow.

JoAnna, a week has gone by in your new job.  How are things going?  I know there is a period of adjustment but I know you will go into it "full speed ahead", do a wonderful job, have new learning experiences and will love it.  We think of all of you everyday.

Will Andy have a brief spell of no practices or does he go ahead into another sport.  You are never at a loss as to where the next practice is, time & all.  It's a great experience for the boys.

We look forward to your visit.  I'm already planning for it.  Tell Andy stuffed pork chops will be on the menu.

Barb takes care of Scott today.  Yesterday he went to the Y so she didn't have to work.

Dad is still sleeping but I'll get him up soon.  One load of wash is soon ready for the dryer.  He's in p.j.'s now most of the time as he likes to nap in bed.  More comfortable than the chair.  Won't chew or swallow so it's a liquid diet.

Hospice just called & they said Dad can be in Hospice so someone & a Hospice nurse will come at 11 A.M. They would like someone in the family present.  I'll call Lar as it is easiest for him to get away.

Hospice was over this A.M. & already things are moving.  They are bringing in a hosp. bed & a belt that helps you hang onto him or help pull him up.  Next Mon, Wed, Fri. someone will come to bathe him, etc.  The nurse examined him & his blood pressure is high.

Dr. McNett's office called & I have hyperactive thyroid - that's why I lost weight.  I will take 3 pills a day.  Will see the Dr. the 19th & must have a blood test first.  Mon. of that week I go to the hosp. for orientation, Tues eye fixed, Wed. to eye Dr. for a check, Thurs. McNett.  So I won't get much done this week.  The following week Sat. you come.  But I'll be set.

The case worker for Hospice Ellen Ruffalo said to me "You're independent aren't you".  I said yes.  I guess I want to do things myself but I've hit a rock that won't move.

The hosp. bed came but it won't fit in the eating area so it's in the dining room alongside the window.  I'll have to rearrange the D.R. a bit.  But I'll have the eating area back & I like that a lot.

Dale needs a new mattress.  Wonder if he'd take the twin bed until he gets a new one.  What do I do with it is the question.  Too good just to set aside.

Time to bring this to a close & get to the dining rm.  Need to move the table, etc.

You know what is happening here.

Friday, February 26, 1999

Went over town this A.M. as it is a sunny day.  Cashed a check for Mar. expenses; got vitamin E at CVS & went into D&K, a favorite place to look around.

Last week I saw Dr. Keverline for my eyes.  And I do have a cataract & arranged to have it taken care of Mar. 16th.  He asked me if I'd lost weight & if I get hot - I said I've lost weight & I do get warm but mostly when I working & the house temp.l is at 72 - for Dad's sake.  Next Tues. the 2nd I was suppose to see Dr. McNett but now he won't be in the office but I can see the nurse - more than an RN - a Dr. asst. but I can't recall the title.  She is very nice.  Oh yes Dr. K. wonders if it's thyroid & gave me ma note to give Dr. McN.

Dad has fallen several times this past week.  Mostly because he is so ornery & won't listen.  Many times he tries to hit me & as a result falls - loses his balance.

Larry & Kim think I should talk to Mark Patterson & make arrangements for a funeral.  Many people do that today & it makes it easier at the time of death.  I don't see how Dad hangs on.  He eats so little & now he's sleeping more.  It's hard to feel bad as he has a way of making things so difficult.  I guess I'll have to remember the first 50 years & forget the rest when the time comes.

Tomorrow I get a permanent & I really need one.  Suppose to be in the mid 40s.

We are enjoying golf on T.V.  Really interesting this week as it is a one on one tournament.

I agree with what you said about the Yankees.  And L.A. spending all that money on a pitcher.  Of course my Mets did that on the catcher.  Time will tell.  It's not an equal situation for all the teams.

Talked to Gen this week & she said she, Edna & Linda (Millie's daughter) all have or had thyroid trouble & take medication.  I didn't know that.

Got a new lampshade & it matches one I got before.  They are lighter & make things brighter.

Morning are lighter at 6:30 A.M. & afternoons are lighter longer, almost to 6 pm.  Nice.  Thoughts of spring.

Friday, April 3

Back to letter writing.  Have been writing Easter notes to our sisters.  Never hear much from Carl's sisters.

Our summer weather has disappeared & I'm not too sad.  Too early for temps in the 80;s.  The trees are budding so I hope we don't have a bad freeze.

We both saw the Dr. on Mon. Mar. 30.  All is as well as can be expected.  The Dr. told me to take time away but that isn't very possible.  But I've been doing jigsaw puzzles & that keeps my min d occupied & baseball is back & that is a big help for something different.

Lar is going to bring over a puzzle the ladies at the "Home" found too hard to do.  I'll see if I can "conquer" it.  I'm doing ones I've done before because we have accumulated a lot of puzzles.  Still fun to do.

Scott had an eye exam & he has to wear glasses.  Not to happy about that.  Did you notice in the paper Bob's mother died.  Only 71.  They called Bob & Lynn at work & by the time they got there she had died.  She hadn't been well for a long time.

Dale didn't get home til 10:30 last nite.  Hew was in Frewsburg learning to remake *wrong word?) transmissions.  T his man works only on transmissions so Dale is getting a free education.

Shults acquired the "Warren Car Mall" place as of Apr. 1.  So they have quite a set up there.  Dale was happy as they need more space for the work they have.

Kim said they have 8 weeks of school left & she is looking forward to vacation.  Kim & 7 of her friends are planning a golf weekend this summer.  The men do it - minus Larry -- so the women decided they should have a weekend off.  Lar is too busy to participate in such things when he can work.

How was your time in Chicago.  I think the weather was nice for sightseeing.

Bet JoAnna is happy Apr. 7th will be over by the time you read this letter.  Hope it turned out in her favor.

The dryer stopped so I must get clothes out & folded.  And I think I've covered the news here.

Saturday, November 9, 1996

I can't sleep anymore so I'll write letters.  Winter is suppose to come this weekend.  We had snow flurries last Sat & Sun & then it warmed up during the week.

Paul I forgot to congratulate you for becoming V Pres/Pres elect of the Wi Lib. Assoc.  That is wonderful.  We are proud of you.

Dale has been on vacation this week - worked on his stereo speakers & in the basement.  He got his eyes checked for new contacts.

Barb was home Fri as she didn't feel good -- diarrhea.

We finally saw the Dr.  Dad's aches & pains are related to Parkinson's & there's not much help.  I saw the Dr. female asst. & I liked her a lot.  She did more explaining.  Had to have a blood test & she called with the results & things are good.  They have to check on the cholesterol medication to see if it is harming the kidney, etc. but all is well.

My Christmas Club check came & Barb & I started our Christmas shopping & yesterday I started wrapping some gifts.  After Thanksgiving, I'll put the tree up.  Am looking forward to that.

Signe called yesterday & wants a picture of Dad taken in 1973 - the year Joyce got married.  Reason - Carl was the only one not there for a sister-bro picture & she wants one of Carol to add to the picture.  I wouldn't know where to look.  I said maybe Genevieve or Charles would have one taken around the '70s.

John Pearson was 35 on the 4th of Nov.

Johnson's house has been sold but they haven't moved in yet.  A younger couple with a boy around 4, I'd say & maybe one a little older.  They've taken out the old rugs, raked leaves & I'm sure there is a lot of work to be accomplished before they move in.

Bo't my Christmas stamps yesterday - got them early as I want the one you don't have to "lick".  Don't have any cards, tho.  Will have to look around.

Elections are over & also the bad ads on T.V.  Thank goodness - some were real nasty.  The next Pres election is 2000 - hope I'm around to see 2000 come in.

Guess I'll see if the paper is here.  Just a note to let you know we're thinking of you & love all of you.

Saturday, October 2, 1993

I'm "resting" after going 20 min. on the treadmill.  I saw Dr. Fino & McNett & all is well.  Hasn't seen Fino for several years so tho't I should have a pap smear.

Dale was saying he heard Walmarts will build on land from Penn Elec, Starbrick.  That would be nice.  You should visit Blair's store in Starbrick - just to see what they have.  Haven't seen the remodeled downtown store.  Looks nice.  And the Christmas store from Smethport will be at the old Levinson Store - 1st floor - for at least the Christmas season - maybe permanently if business is good.

We have our Christmas gifts for the boys just about completed.  Might be too early as it's so easy to give in to something we see.  They are the easiest to buy for.

We have a new meat mkt - where Kondak Beer was.  What a display of meats.   We tried pork chops, swiss steak & beef cubes.  Pork OK.   Swiss steak tonite - smells good.

Dale bot a winter car & then decided it wasn't what he wanted but it has a good engine so he figures he won't lose money.  Sam told him about another car - '80 (I think)   Chev Impala 2 door for $450.,00.  So he has a winter car.  Red interior &he has some car seats stored at Lar's he thinks he can  use in this car.  He'll start working it over & improving it.

That's really great about Andy & soccer.  It's great he can start so young.  You'll have to take a picture of his smile - minus a tooth.

Barb got some outfits from Lynn & she buys expensive clothes.   A dress & slack outfit that she didn't really like on herself is part of the clothes (what a sentence!)  So she asked Kim if she'd like them.  Last Sat she was at a bridal shower & wore the dress & got many compliments.  Said it's a perfect fit.  The slacks are too long so I said I'd shorten them for her.  Betsy Moran (Bob's daughter - Printz) is getting married Oct 23rd & Kim is in the wedding.  Her dress is navy blue & she says it's pretty.  Betsy is around Kim's age & never been married.  Her fiance  was married but for a very short time.  He works at United - a good job.  Kim's dress will cost her $200.00, plus shoes, plus 2 showers, plus wedding gift.  She said it's a budget buster.  Lar & Kim & another couple are giving a couple's shower the 16th.

At the shower last week she got some lovely gifts.  Monogram sheets from her mother.  Her mom had already bot her an expensive nightie & robe when Betsy, her mom & Kim went to Buffalo to shop.  Nice to have money & they have investments.  Bob isn't well at all - results of smoking.

Baseball season is just about over.  We're sad.  Did you notice the Mets won 4 in a row!!  We hope for better results next year.

Have some articles of interest - at least I hope they are -- to enclose.
