Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

It sure is quiet today after the excitement of Christmas. I didn't wake up til 6:20 this A>M. As I was going downstairs, I heard Dale's voice. "I'm not going to work today. I have congestion in my chest." So he has been taking it easy. Resting & he hasn't eaten that much.
I did my regular duties of washing 3 loads & making Dale's bed with clean sheets. After lunch Barb & I went grocery shopping.
We had a nice Christmas & Santa was very good to all of us. The 2 silver trays you gave me are very pretty & I like them a lot. We all got the regular run of gifts. The dishes from Lar & Kim are very pretty & looked so nice on the table. The biggest problem is where do I store them. Barb says we'll have to look for a shelf for the basement to store them. Barb was so pleased the boys liked their gifts. She fretted over them once she had ordered them so was happy to hear they were pleased.
I didn't get last week's letter mailed until today & most likely it won't go out til tomorrow.
It's been trying to snow today but it is still mild. Dale gave me a new outdoor thermometer & put it up on the font porch. One that is easier to read. He also gave me an oven (meat) thermometer & I used it on the turkey breast for Christmas. Worked fine.
Last Fri. at Shults they had a pot luck lunch at noon. They had prizes & Dale finally won something -- $50.00.
Heard from Gerald & Darla. Chance is in the 5th grade & doing well. They were expecting one of her sons & family for Christmas.
At the grocery store today, I noticed a jump in some of the prices of groceries & meat. Must be the high price of transportation.
Thurs. I don't have to fix dinner so as will be going to Lar & Kim's. They'll put the queen sized mattress in the guest room. It isn't that old so should be more comfortable the next time you visit. The king-sized bed will provide more room for Kim as Torey sleeps with them now. They hate to push him off when he is getting old & slower. It will be a sad day when they have to put him to sleep.
Barb has been using my car keys. She can't find hers. She has looked thru her jacket & no keys. They must have dropped somewhere.
There was an article in today's paper concerning churches are hurting because the high cost of heating bills. Churches like First Methodist are most likely wishing their church was less cathedral like now. People don't want to sit in a cold church.
Made a date bread for Christmas breakfast & Kim really like it. It is a favorite of mine. I didn't get any Bond Ost cheese this year as only Larry & I like it. It is quite pricey now.
Sheffield is losing 2 companies due to them closing or moving away. Kim thinks that could affect the Sheffield schools as she thinks people will have to move away. If the schools should close she would have seniority & "bump" a new teacher. She wouldn't care to go to the high school as her friend teaches there & said the kids are bad. Barb always thinks Sheffield is so bad but I say all the schools have problem kids. "Oh, Sheffield is worse." So it pleased me to hear Kim say because Warren is larger, they have more problems. She'd go there if she had to, to continue teaching, but would prefer the younger grades. It won't happen tomorrow, but it is on her mind. When you kids went to school there never was an asst. superintendent. Now there is with a hefty salary. That could be a savings. The school population is much smaller now.
Tues. the 27th
Dale went to work today. He told me he was scared -- maybe he thought it was heart pains. But wasn't. He dozed a lot all day. At times he had a blanket around him because he felt chilled. Can't remember if I wrote John sent pictures of their wedding. Took 22 hrs. to get to Manila. His best friend was with him as he also has a Phillipino girlfriend. Fe must come from a well-to-do family judging by the pictures of her home & of the wedding.
I sit here wondering what I should do. Can't do much until we take the tree & decorations down for another year. It's easier just to be lazy!
My next letter will have an increased postage stamp on it.
Thurs A.M.
We went to the library on Tues. & I got 5 books, 2 of them new authors. Read Thunder Creek by Jill Gregory, set in Wyoming & enjoyed it a lot. Will look for more of her books. Read Double Shot by Diane Mott Davidson. It was OK but not enough to make me read another of her books. The 3 old faithfuls -- Twilight Whispers by Barbara Delinsky & The Bailey Chronicles by Catherine Cookson. Both sound so good. I can't decide which to read first. Then White Kat by Sandra Brown. I'll read that last as it sounds familiar but I like her.
We never got Eddie's latest school picture. Didn't he like it?
It is nice to have a Thurs. when I don't have to plan a meal. Or make a dessert. My New Year's resolution is to fill each daily square with a meal plan so I will be prepared. Hope I'm successful as that is my downfall. One of them anyway!
Fri. A.M.
We had a nice time at Lar & Kim's last nite.
The Bailey Chronicles by Cookson is such a good book. I'm enjoying it so much. 550+ pages. almost finished.
Barb & I are going out to lunch. Her treat for me making cookies for Lynn & Bob & family.
P.S. Your Christmas letter was such a great idea & so much fun to read. Thanks for including it.

This aft. I saw the Dr. My blood tests were all good & my blood pressure wsa 130/60 & that is very good for me. It was higher last time in Feb. So I will just keep taking my meds & vitamins.
Did you happen to see the amazing catch Met M. Cameron at R.F. made. I'm sure it was repeated many times. He was running to catch a ball, tripped & fell & put out his hand & the ball dropped right in. A catch he never knew he would make. It would have been a triple for Cruz, Jr. of the Rockies. It was great. Pedro pitched a great game. When he was traded to the Mets I was n't sure about the deal. It seemed he was temperamental, etc. but he fits in great with the Mets so it's nice ot have a good pitcher.
Ask Any how it feels to slide into a base just ahead of the ball. Does he slide feet first or head first. They say feet first is better. The other way fingers or hands could get hurt. Why do pitchers keep fiddling with their caps. Taking them off & on. The only pitch I recognize is the curve ball, maybe fast ball.
Lynn will have a garage sale tomorrow (Sat) & Barb is up there now helping her. Barb folded clothes, etc. to help her during the week. She put masking tape on the articles & Lynn prices them. Having to take me to the Dr. held her up -- that's her job to take me to appointments.
Shults, Wrrn. has added Toyota cards to their selling program. Dale says they don't have enough space for all the cars now, & tools & working area.
Today I saw a spider on the stove -- went for a paper towel to kill it but Dale let it live. He has a thing for spiders. For one summer he had a spider web in the garage & kept it safe & even tried to feed it. I was a big one.
Sat. aft the 4th
This A.M. we went to Sears & before I do anything I'll see if something can be done to our washer. The salesman said they could fix this problem. I thought this would be my last washing machine.
Then we went nto Lawn & Garden as Barb needed more garden stuff.
We ended up at the Mall. The earrings Barb likes were on sale. She got 2 prs. & I got some white earrings. I got some paper supplies at theh 1.00 store. Kim says she gets all her paper supplies & cleaners there. A better buy.
Sun. aft.
While watching the Mets they said there would be a special (paper) on the Mets. So Barb got a N.Y. Times (that was the paper) but it must have been for the local area. But I found the "sun Styles " had a couple of interesting article & wondered if you read them. On p. 11 "A Bad Case of Puppy Love". It was cute. P. 3 "Love Thy Busybody". Another cute one. Stories like you might write.
This aft. I watched Pitts. beat the Braves & Pitts. took the series. They are doing well & I like Pitts announcers. The Mets were rained out Sat. so there is a doubleheader going on now 4 pm. Mets will be on ESPN at 8 pm. Mets are playing San Fran & the Mets are improving.
I see the "George" says the Yankees must improve. If they don't will there be a new mgr? Who cares, not me. Their skid makes me happy.
Our pastor was in church today -- Pastor Ray Forstrum had the service. She made an announcement. The baby is home but they can't have any visitors for 2 weeks & the baby can't go out in a crowd for 2 weeks. s We won't see her until the middle of July. She will be on maternity leave.
Wed. A.M. the 8th
Summer has arrived. There are buds on the rose bushes & the plants Barb planted from seed are coming along fine. I've sat on the front porch & it is nice to watch the birds, etc.
Did Andy notice (as of this A.M.) that Atl. & N.Y.M. are tied for 2nd place with Wn. in 1st place. Looks good to me. (Didn't last long. Fri. the 9th)
School is over on Fri. the 10th. I said to Barb "I bet Scott won't go to school on Fri." Her reply, "Oh no, he'll want to see his friends." I was right (for once) he won't go to school on Fri.
Just wrote a note to Gen to add to her birthday card. She will be 83 on Mon. She won't realize it is her birthday until John tells her. She doesn't know how old she is. It's so sad.
Thanks for the pictures. Andy looks nice in his baseball uniform. When does he start his summer job. What about Ed -- will he get a summer job.
Collins on Conewango have their home up for sale. It's probably getting to be too much for him to keep up. It will be interesting to see if it sells before Frank's does. (Across the st.) Collins keeps his property in top condition. Frank's yard upkeep leaves a lot to be desired.
This A.M. Dale asked me if I heard them painting the crosswalk lines about 1:30 A.M. (not much traffic). He said the machine was so noisy it woke him up & Barb as well. I didn't hear a thing. Am I losing my hearing -- I don't think so -- I was really tired last nite & must have been in the deep sleep cycle.
I see the Mets picked a pitcher in the draft who is suppose to be pretty good. Time will tell. A few years ago, it seems to me they tho't that about Isringhausen & 2 others but they didn't work out as regular pitchers. It seems only to happen for the Braves. Wed. aft. & I'm watching Toronto at the Cubs -- after I watched "As the World Turns" which is getting very exciting. Me & my soaps!
I took the easy way out & got pizza for supper, delivered from Pizza Hut. The one who delivered it used to work at Shults & recognized Dale's car. The Monte Carlo. He said "that's Dale's car & I want it!" More than one would like the car but he's not selling it.

I'll start a letter and keep adding to it. With Dale gone, Barb & I went to Holiday Inn for lunch. I had the salmon with roasted potatoes & carrots (baby) & it was delicious. The salmon was a larger piece that I've had before. Barb had a Philly Beef sandwich. We had dessert -- Barb carrot cake & I had Bourbon Pecan pie. It was a nice outing. I won't have to make supper. We'll each get something easy. Then we went grocery shopping. They say it's best to go grocery shopping on a full stomach.
Wed. the 10th
Received Charles & Sandra's Christmas card & letter today. I'll have to keep their address in my file. They are made for each other. He plays & she sings.
Today we have sun & clear blue skies & I can hear the icicles crashing to the ground. Nice to see the sunshine. Good weather for Dale & the other fellow to drive home form Rochester. This session was on Dodge trucks. Dale said the other fellow only had 15.00 & had brought food from home. Dale had a couple of hundred $ on him.
Fri the 12th
Yesterday the UPS driver was here & I had to sign a paper I didn't receive the box. It's our regular man & he said he always put small pkg. between the front door & screen door. I order from Penney's & Dale orders a lot & we've never had any problems.
This A.M. after my hair appt. I went to D&K for some silk flowers. Got 2 large cream roses -- about 5" in diameter & put them in a tall, blue, slender vase Lar gave me years ago. Put it by the fireplace & it really looks nice. Got some smaller pink roses & put them in a pink (deep) vase that was a wedding gift & they look nice. They are in the dining room.
This aft. we went to the mall (missed an exciting part of my soap!!) & I paid the Penney's bill. Barb got 2 tops at Bon Ton & then we went to Big K. As we entered we saw some Christmas ornaments 1/2 price & some 75% off. Got 2 boxes of ornaments & 2 wreaths. They are gold trimmed with 3 pine cones & 2 roses. Thought I'd like to put one over each light by the front door. The other lights really light up the porch so they would be visible from the st. They also have a lighter gold bow. So I'd better be ambitious next Dec.
My nose & upper lip area were a mess. The skin started to peel & what a mess. Finally tried Neosporin & that healed it fast so it doesn't look as bad today. Never had anything like that.
The nite stand Barb & I gave Dale looks like a smaller version of the old iceboxes but only one door. Inside there is no shelf so Dale is making one. He does a nice job & has invested in tools. Did I write he also got a large bookcase but hasn't had time to put it together. He also put some of his money into a CD. Last nite Larry mentioned he got a small TV (99.00 at Big K) for the greenhouse. He can watch H&G TV when he is working.
Shults has a monthly lunch meeting. Dale said they other Shults businesses (Jamestown, Bradford, Dunkirk) will be run like the Warren Shults as they make the most money. I know they have a good business. I'll brag & say they have a good man with Dale working there.
The moon was beautiful last nite. The days are getting longer & I like that.
Sun the 14th
I'm ready for church but have time to write.
Torey is here. Lar called yesterday to ask if we'd "baby sit" Torey. They are on their way to Erie now. 9:40 A.M. I was taking a shower & when I came up the stairs Torey was here so they wanted an early start. When he saw me dressed he thought I was getting ready to take him for a walk. He won't like it when I leave. Dale is up & has had breakfast. Barb is still in bed & as soon as she is dressed she'll leave to get the paper. I put an old mattress pad on the davenport so he could be on that but he is on the floor.
Later on Sun.
Good football. I'm still rooting for the Giants to be Baltimore. Wsa rooting for Oakland. Should be a good Super Bowl.
Are you away this weekend. It is Martin Luther King weekend isn't it? No, I'm a week early right the first time.
I took Torey for a walk around the block. He was getting "antsy" waiting for Lar & Kim. They picked him up about 4 & Kim walked Torey home. Then they were going up to camp to take the furniture out of the bedroom as Larry wants to concentrate on finishing it.
Bet you're anxious to hear more from the contractor concerning the kitchen plans & costs!
Dale bo't himself a couple of shirts. One is flannel lined. He really is surprising me. The other is a flannel plaid. He plans to go thru his closet & get rid of old shirts. I'll wash them & give them to the Salvation Army.
We had a beef roast for dinner. It's been a long time since I fixed a roast & it was tasty. Barb saw a roast & suggested it for a meal. Nice to get ideas from someone else.
Guess I've covered the news from here.
P.S. Great news about Eddie & his picture drawn for church.

I finally called for a dentist appt. & saw Dr. Walters this aft. & Presto the hole is filled. There wasn't much tooth left but he got it done.
I walked to the beauty shop this A.M. & it felt good to walk again. Then I went to the post office for stamps; to the bank for next month's expenses & then to the new CVS. It's a nice store. Also walked to Dental Arts for my appt. Nice to have clear sidewalks & warm weather. We know it won't last but it's a good respite. Wonder how March will come in.. Lion or lamb.
On Tues. Quality Mkts. give seniors a 6% discount. Barb couldn't take me during the day so she suggested we go out to eat at Perkins & then go to Quality. That's what we did & it was enjoyable.
Wed. nite was a 5 Star Banquet for the employees at Shults. They are a 5 Star organization. Dale had prime rib at Jackson Valley. Happy hour first -- some were really drinking. Afterwards some went out. Randy S was designated driver & they didn't get home til 3:30 A.M. Thankfully Dale was home between 9:30-10 pm.
It's none of our business but Barb & I wonder why if the boys get their homework done & done correctly, why couldn't they be rewarded with an hour or so of TV.
Do you remember Pam Valone -- you know the family & can't remember her married name. 2 daughters. The youngest has her pretty upset as she is going with a loser from Sheffield. Kim has him in Health -- druggie, etc. Glad I'm going on 80.
Lar was over yesterday & trimmed the trees so they're even with the school fence. He says they should fill in even more. Imagine doing this in Feb. We know it can't last but it's been wonderful. Kim stopped by for a cup of coffee.
Was watching Nascar but now I've switched to golf.
Gen called last Tues. to say Aunt Esther died. She was 100 last June but on life support. But she was congested & no strength to fight it. It must have been earlier. I'm sure I wrote about it. It seems too familiar as I write.
Dale is getting his room ready for painting. Put a lot of stuff in the attic. The bedspread won't match the new rug too well -- brown against gray so I'll be on the lookout for a new one. He's really gotten into it.
Finally wore my new dress today. With the walks snow covered I prefer to wear pants. The snow is all gone so I wore a dress & shoes -- not boots. It's been springlike but we know it's still winter But it's been a great break for us. Just what we needed to spur us on. Barb is thinking about planting seeds. We'll look for some this week.
I need a change from puzzles & noticed in the paper a new author Teri Holbrook. She is similar to P. D. James & Eliz. George & I enjoy their books. On Fri. the library doesn't open til 10 AM & I'm thru with my hair appt. by 9:30 or so. The new puzzles are so hard to match colors so it takes longer & I lose interest. It's a week & I'm still not done. Just sit & stare & find 1 or 2 that will fit. But I finally finished it.
Now it's Monday, the 28th.
Dale chose the paint today. An off white. He'll paint the ceiling - he's patching holes now. Figures he'll need to put on 2 coats.
Tried a couple of new meals lately. Shrimp fettucini; & chicken & spaghetti. Both went over well. Recipes from my Quick Cooking magazine. Nice to try something different, esp. when it is well received.
Did you notice in today's paper (Feb 29) "Warren Native sworn in as chief judge of S. Carolina Court". First woman chief. A classmate of yours. Kaye G. Hearn. Kathleen Wrenn Hearn, 11, held the Bible for her mother. Could her last name have been Wrenn? No one that name in the phone book. She graduated in '68 also so you must know who she is.
Want to mail this when we go for groceries. All is well here.

Your letter came today & I'll start a letter because this will be a busy first of the week in preparation for Thanksgiving. Don't know if Barb J. is coming but if she does I'll have to fuss a little more.
Thurs. nite we heard from Kim that Torey had dug up an old bone & chewed on it. Result he had "the runs". Thurs. he still had to eat her e- cheese, salmon, ice cream & cookies. That didn't help - at 2:30 A.M. he woke Kim up - he had messed on the rug in the living room -- all liquid. He stood by the door meaning he wanted to go out. So Kim put a coast over her pj's & took him out. Meanwhile she tried to clean up the rug. The worse part was Lar slept all thru this & Kim couldn't take that. She turned on all the lights & Lar finally roused. Kim said it's your turn if he needs to go out. About 5:30 A.M., Kim heard Tor & Lar had to get up. Kim said to Lar "don't let Torey eat old dug up bones." Lar said "that's part of being a dog." Kim - "Not for Torey, he's almost human."
Dale was in Rochester Thurs & Fri this week. Sam B. also went so they went together. It was about noises & squeaks in cars - at least part of it. Dale said it was an interesting 2 days. Shults has an agency in Erie & was asked to take over a Ford agency in Pittsburgh & get it back to be successful. T hey have Toyota, Ford as well as Chevy & Pontiac, etc. Dale said the one son is the one who has the smarts to be successful. The 2 songs have taken over from the father.
Where Barb works for Bert, one bedroom ceiling had a hole in the plaster. On Tues. someone went to plaster & also painted the ceiling & walls. Barb didn't' work Fri. as the room wasn't finished. So she worked today but didn't get finished so will go in tomorrow for a couple of hours. Bert's niece doesn't come til Mon. aft. so that will help & barb can go over the downstairs on Mon. Painting the kitchen took time so she didn't get any cleaning done.
I guess Penn State is going to lose for a 3rd time in a row. Lots of unhappy Penn Staters around - including Cindy I'm sure. When is Julianna a year old.
When Dale was gone Thurs. nite, it gave us a chance to have fish. Salmon & it was delicious. Dale is not a fish eater. Doesn't like the smell.
Last Wed. when Sam came to pick Dale up, he was early so we talked awhile. He divorced his wife but still they see each other. He put winter tires on her car, check to see the storm windows were OK. They are friends but being husband & wife won't work. I like Sam but he's not husband material. It was her - she spent & charged too much money - one of the problems. There were others. Sam was her 2nd husband & she has 2 children. A son 16 & a daughter 14 going on 30. Sam told her you'd better watch the girl or you'll be sorry but she said that' how kids are today. She's an R.N. & can support herself.
Mon A.M.
I'm going out to lunch with our pastor friends at Holiday Inn. Hollertzs won't be there as their daughter Valeria is home for a short visit. Bensons will pick me up.
Last nite I was the last one in bed - this is Dale's early week. Reason: I watched Law & Order from 8-11 & really enjoyed it. I'm going to think about watching L&) on Wed. nites at 10 pm.
Luncheon date is 1 pm & we're there about 2 hours so Barb will get the groceries while I'm gone so we can go to the Mall when I get home.
Another warm day here - should be in the 60s. Hit 59 yesterday. Nice Nov. weather!
Guess I've covered everything.

Friday, April 3
Back to letter writing. Have been writing Easter notes to our sisters. Never hear much from Carl's sisters.
Our summer weather has disappeared & I'm not too sad. Too early for temps in the 80;s. The trees are budding so I hope we don't have a bad freeze.
We both saw the Dr. on Mon. Mar. 30. All is as well as can be expected. The Dr. told me to take time away but that isn't very possible. But I've been doing jigsaw puzzles & that keeps my min d occupied & baseball is back & that is a big help for something different.
Lar is going to bring over a puzzle the ladies at the "Home" found too hard to do. I'll see if I can "conquer" it. I'm doing ones I've done before because we have accumulated a lot of puzzles. Still fun to do.
Scott had an eye exam & he has to wear glasses. Not to happy about that. Did you notice in the paper Bob's mother died. Only 71. They called Bob & Lynn at work & by the time they got there she had died. She hadn't been well for a long time.
Dale didn't get home til 10:30 last nite. Hew was in Frewsburg learning to remake *wrong word?) transmissions. T his man works only on transmissions so Dale is getting a free education.
Shults acquired the "Warren Car Mall" place as of Apr. 1. So they have quite a set up there. Dale was happy as they need more space for the work they have.
Kim said they have 8 weeks of school left & she is looking forward to vacation. Kim & 7 of her friends are planning a golf weekend this summer. The men do it - minus Larry -- so the women decided they should have a weekend off. Lar is too busy to participate in such things when he can work.
How was your time in Chicago. I think the weather was nice for sightseeing.
Bet JoAnna is happy Apr. 7th will be over by the time you read this letter. Hope it turned out in her favor.
The dryer stopped so I must get clothes out & folded. And I think I've covered the news here.

Finally a chance to sit down. I'll tell you what we got for the boys so far.
Andy - raincoat & walkie-talkie toy.
Eddie - Luma sketch in color. And I thought I'd look for Frontier Building Sets - they are logs to make cabins, etc. The recent toy catalogue from Penney's shows them. Barb got him View Master Super Show projector. Projects on a wall - like a flashlight. Would Andy like another Geo Safari 20 lesson
Dad saw a different Dr. & he increased one of his medications so I hope that helps. Betty Jean Holder works for this Dr. Her daughter graduated from college a year ago & is engaged to be married. The son is a soph. in college.
Last Tues. Dale had another spell at work. Bumped his head when he passed out. They called 911. This time they gave him medication & he has another test next Fri. Nov 4. Can it be Nov. already?
I've read a couple of books by Robin Cook & enjoy them & I'm reading one by Hilary Norman now. It is so good. Glad I like to read. Barb & I both bot puzzles today. So when I finish my book I'll put a 1000 pc. puzzle together. . I'll add more later.
This past summer when it was so warm, Kim suggested they get us a ceiling fan for the dining room for Christmas & we agreed that would be a great gift. Lar would also install it. We want them to follow thru on that idea.
[Monday - 6 AM]
When I got up I tho't it was 6:50 AM & when I went to get the paper I wondered what happened as it wasn't there. What happened is I don't think I changed my clock to standard time! So things are all set for breakfast so your letter will get finished.
Shults, the elder, was bot out by his sons who also own the Jamestown business. And starting Jan 1 Dale signed up for a retirement plan. He'll save 40.00 every 2 weeks & they match it. 40K program. We're happy they introduced that.
We're suppose to have a wet Halloween, altho it isn't raining yet. Maybe we won't have as many kids out. Hours are from 6-8 p.m. Barb got 2 Halloween plastic bags (orange with a face in black) & she filled them with leaves & placed them on each side of the front door. We still have leaves on the one tree. Barb & I have raked. They collected on the opposite side of the st. but not on our side.
Watched the Pittsburgh-Phoenix game last night but didn't see the finish as it ended in a tie. Pitts didn't play well at all & they lost.
Forgot to ask what the boys would be wearing for Halloween.
T.V. just said Penn State is #one again. That was a great game on Sat. Dad says sometimes the excitement of football is too much for him - hard on his nervous system so he has to change the channel. NASCAR racing affects him the same way.
When Barb was with you she got a sweat shirt at Northern Reflections at the Mall. It is pink with a duck on it. She likes it a lot & if you want to suggestion she'd like another one in size Medium. Not necessarily pink. Just an idea.
We have Ambulance coverage & just found out that anyone living with us is covered so that will help Dale. Good we found it out. Will walk to 5th mailbox to get this mailed. Love to all.
