Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

I'll tell you why I'm thankful for strawberries! Barb picked 4 qts. 2 for her & 2 for me to make straw. jam. I got the jars ready, looked for lids & of course I'd forgotten to write it on my grocery list. I saw I had a pkg but didn't really check. So I got my berries ready, washed jars, etc. & then noticed the lids were for qts. So I decided I'd have to walk over town & get some after lunch. Went to the post office, to Crones to see if they carried canning supplies. They didn't. Then I cashed a check for July exp., walked to BiLo & got my lids & 3 glazed donuts & a cup of coffee & rested a bit. I divvied my money into budget envelopes, changed my clothes & started making jam. Got 6 pints. It's so much better than store bot. I've been afraid to walk over town because of the time my knees buckled. Today I was forced to face the monkey on my back & now I know I can do it. I'm really happy over that.
Kim called around 2 pm to say Barb called. She was scheduled for 9:30 kemo but she was about to start around 2. Others were ahead of her, but why did she have to be there so early.
I did my regular chores today & have supper simmering on the stove. Chop suey. And I feel good.
Barb felt pretty good when she came home. They found cancer in the lymph nodes but it hasn't gotten into the bone. She had a catalog from the cancer society to order a wig & head coverings. It takes about 2 weeks to start losing her hair. After a couple of days she can drive.
I'm so happy for Cyndi & Albert and the new baby. They waited a long time & now they have Joseph.
Tues. June 29
I'm moving slower this A.M. After a shower I made my bed with clean sheets & have a load in the washer.
I overslept this A.M. Woke up at 4:44 A.M., turned over & went back to sleep. When I looked again it was 5:48 & Dale was already in the shower. Didn't hear him get up. Barb will take it easy today. I'll work my 1000 pc puzzle & be quiet for awhile, meaning take it easy.
Wed. last day of June
Barb still isn't feeling good. Can't keep food down -- not even medicine.
Lar called & Kim won't be coming Thurs. because she's working on her garage sale for Fri.
Dale got a $300.00 catalogue gift certificate from work. He had to decide on something by the end of June. He ordered a camera & I'm enclosing a sheet about it. He showed it to me & I tho't you'd be interested.
I finished my puzzle today. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. And I didn't lose any pieces.
July 1
Barb feels a little better today. I told her she should be up more but she didn't take my advice.
Kim was telling us about a party at Bones Blair's former house (estate) next to them. They always have a 4th of July party -- fireworks, etc. Kim & Lar's friends Dr. Jay & Nancy are always invited but never attend. This year the Dr. thinks they should. They've heard at the end of the party they exchange mates & "enjoy" themselves. Nancy said to Kim, "if that happens I'm coming over to your place & watch soccer." Lar & Kim are out there overnite. So that's how the "other half live!" The host is a Dr. as well. Came here from Pittsburgh.
Dale just came home for the Danish for his potluck at work. He says they're all on "carbs" diets trying to lose weight. But one of the gals there, Sherry, will take any leftover rolls. She'd like me to make some for her, but I'm not getting into that. I was up at 5 A.M. to get started. Also make a strawberry pie & got the garbage out. When I work, I work & when I'm lazy I'm really lazy so it evens out.
Dale doesn't work tomorrow, Fri, so he will take me to get my hair done if Barb isn't better.
Barb said she's feeling better & is able to keep food down.
I'm watching tennis. Interesting matches.
Look for obit on Billie Foster. Said stepson Mike F. preceded her in death.

Just walked to 5th to mail a letter for Dale. I saw the letter & it gave me a reason to walk a bit.
Barb was to go on the 20th for kemo but when Dr. in Bradford heard that he said "No, she can't wait that long, so it will be 1:30 on Thurs this week. He must really be concerned about the lump.
Fri. nite Lar & Dale moved furniture. I'm in Barb's old room & she is in mine. All her "stuff" fit in, & the lighter wood looks so good in that room. Yesterday I finally got my personal stuff out of the closets -- still using shelves for blanket, etc. for storage. She cleared out the closet in the little room so I have that. My bed was covered & I went thru things & have 2 big bags to add to the pile already to g. Some things were too big, others too old & should have gone long ago. Maybe by fall there will be more. Next will be Dale to clean out his closet. He said he has pants in there from his school days. He likes to keep things like the rest of us. Changing rooms has made such a difference for Barb. The basketball & Barb just don't mix. It's like red to a bull!!
Bert is a worry wart. Barb said to me, you never worry. Some things may concern me, but what's the use of worrying. It just upsets a person & can make them sick.
I'm glad the library Open House was so successful. It must be even more interesting to work there now.
Barb & I each got Lar a gift certificate from Howe's True Value. He shops there lot & can get what he wants for his birthday. It doesn't seem possible May is here already. Soon you'll be making plans for you July party.
Guess my rest period is up so more late.
Wed the 5th 4 pm
I really was busy this aft & it feels good to sit. Before lunch I made pie crust & set dinner rolls. After lunch I started supper -- beef cubes -- then rolled out a pie crust, formed my roils Oh yes I also made sugar cookies & put the dough in the fridge. Then I started baking, pie crust for a banana cream pie for Thus; the rolls & cookies. By 4, all was cleaned up & put away. So I really accomplished something today. The reason I made sugar cookies is Viola Seaquist is home from the nursing home & seeing I'm so close I feel like I should visit her. And I wan t to bring cookies. If I get ambitious I might even make rolls. Brian will enjoy them as I'm sure Viola isn't able to do much. I know they enjoyed the cookies & rolls at Christmas. I'll see her on Fri. the 7th. Set danish for her.
Thurs. Barb saw the Dr. today & fist she has to have a battery of tests. Starting next Wed the 12th Fri A.M. she has to be there at 7:30 for tests. They took blood today. Barb's spirits are good.
More next week.

We're watching Green Bay & Seattle & at the moment they are tied.
New Years Day was so mild & I walked to the 5th Ave. mailbox & 2 fellows were playing tennis, & guys were at Beaty field playing football. Dale even raked the lawn to get rid of fallen twigs. How often does that happen on Jan 1.
But this week winter returns according to weather news.
Sat. was Dale's free Sat. He took the bare tree down. Fri. I had taken decorations off the tree & got things ready to go to the attic. As usual, I had forgotten some things & it meant several trips to the attic. Also dusted & it is nice to have order restored again.
Barb borrowed videos from the library. She wanted me to see "Firefly" with Jeanette McDonald. We played Scrabble & watched it. But I couldn't concentrate on 2 things but I enjoyed the music. Barb beat me 3 times but just by a couple of points so I'm improving Often times I don't see plays that would give me more points.
Seeing the card table was up, I used it to start a puzzle. 1000 pieces. Haven't done one for awhile.
Dale worked all day in the attic & is getting rid of a lot of junk. Got rid of all the boxes we saved for sending gifts. But more will accumulate during the year. We're all talking about thinning out our closets. After so many years clothes get stale, if that's the correct word, & they don't feel right.
G. B. just got a TD -- can they hold off S. for about 2:44 minutes. Hope so -- we're rooting for your team.
It was nice that Lar & Kim could talk with you last Thurs. Barb enjoyed it as well. If Dale is around when you call he will talk.
Tues the 6th
Barb & I have been working on the puzzle -- it's a harder one.
Lar & Kim heard from the Carey's at Christmas. They didn't build in Fla, kept their condo there & bot one in Buffalo for summers. That doesn't make Paul's husband very happy. Susan bot a house in Buff. a couple of blocks from John & Paula's. Now the parents.
It is cold tonite so winter has arrived. The moon is out tonite & it is so pretty to see.
Made swiss steak for supper & it was good. This is Dale's late or long day so he's eating now. 9pm. Think I'll make veg. soup tomorrow & a pie. Soup sounds good for a cold day & preferably homemade.
Lucky JoAnna to be able to attend the exciting game & see the finish making Gr. Bay the victor. We were happy for you folks. And thanks for the pictures -- of the boys & the family room. The boys look good & so does the family room.
Dad & I stopped at Schreiner's a few times & enjoyed it. The Nelson's always stopped there on their way to the lake.
Thurs the 8th
When I was in the basement I heard dripping but none of the faucets dripped. Barb found something under the sink was the culprit. Dale is fixing it. Another proof I'd never live alone in this house. Joyce O'Connor has lived alone for -- I think she said it was 20 yrs. since Dugey died.
Lar & Kim were over tonite & we had a nice visit. Lar got a printer for his digital camera & said it works well. I told Dale he should get one for his camera.
It is nice to have things back to normal after the holidays. My bedroom is in good order again & that makes me feel good. I can only stand disorder so long & then I have to get busy & fix it up.
I even started working on a menu for the month. Just hope I keep it up.
Dale cleaned out the area under the sink & is now putting things back & wondered if some stuff could be thrown away -- I said yes.
Soon bedtime so good nite to all.

I hope you had a nice birthday. Decided to try calling in the A.M. this time but it still didn't work out. Maybe it will work for Ed's birthday. I called at 10 A.M. your time. Andy said I didn't get him out of bed, but maybe he was just being nice.
Yesterday I made 2 pies for church -- a graham cracker but I was disappointed with the meringue but the vanilla pudding came out good. The 2nd pie had a cheesecake type felling & pie filling cherries on top. It looked good. I also made cookies, a new recipe from the latest "family Circle" magazine. you make a cooky crust & bake it 20 min. Then a syrup of butter, brown sugar & honey. Bring it to a boil & boil 5 min. Then add 1/2 c. cream & 3 cups pecans & cashews. Pour it over the crust & bake. Very rich & delicious Barb says like pecan pie. Plan to make another batch before Christmas. Will give some away. After I got them to church & came home & made a pumpkin pie. Just had a piece -- I love pumpkin pie, and a apple loaf for Dale's snack. I sample one crust & it is a good recipe.
Dale has to go to school 2 days this week. Leaves Tues. after work & home on Thurs. Rochester this time.
Also finished wrapping gifts & so did Barb. They look pretty under the tree.
After lunch I took a little nap in my chair. Finished a.m. ironing -- just a small amount -- mostly pressing. The only reason it got done, I wanted to wear my new slacks on Sun. so that pushed me. And I still had time to address Christmas cards. I want to start writing small notes to some I only hear from at Christmas.
Now I'm taking it easy as all may chores have been accomplished.
When I read your letter & you said only 3 of the football team went out for basketball, I got the picture out to see the other two playing basketball. Also looked at Miles again as his name comes up a lot in your letters.
I'm thinking of having something different for Christmas -- cornish hens. I'd like something different for Christmas Eve as well but I haven't come across anything interesting.
Mon. Dec 8
After lunch I got a perm & it's nice to have more curl again.
Made lasagna for supper & it was pretty good but I'd like to improve on it. Used the "no boil" lasagna. I can never cook the other because they always split a bit.
After I did my Mon. chores I started on notes for Christmas cards. My list isn't as large so it's easier. On the thank you card from Gerald I noticed the address was different: 1474 Railroad Lake Rd. Florence. It surprised me.
Barb got a large fire truck for the boy from the name on the Salvation Army. He'll get 3 toys & pants, shirt & pj's so one 6 yr. old should be a little happier on Christmas. Next year I'll take an older children's name & have Barb & Dale go in on gifts. Older ones want more expensive things & clothes, etc. are more expensive. Some ask for bicycles, etc.
Wed. Dec. 10
Just came back from the dentist -- lost a filling. Last Fri. as I was eating one of my cookies I'd made, I felt something hard & moved my tongue around & felt a hole. So I called & was lucky to get in today. As soon as I got there my name was called & the dentists started right in so I was only there 1/2 hour & it cost me 60.00, but worth it to keep my teeth.
Dale doesn't go to Rochester until today -- they'll be 2 of them, leave right way after work & Dale will be home Fri. maybe around 7-8 pm He told me what it was for but I can't remember it.
I haven't done much this week -- just taking it easy. It's hard to dust with the Christmas decorations & Dale vacuums the rugs.
Closer to Christmas I'll make 4 kinds of cookies, maybe a couple more & then I have to make 2 batches of my rolls for Dale at work. Christmas Eve day they don't do much & have a pot luck at lunch & then they are thru. And they always want Dale to bring my rolls. I'll do it as long as I can. 2 weeks & the big day will be here -- or the 2 big days.
Thurs. the 11th
We will be only 3 for dinner. Kim will be with girl friends for a get together. Next week we'll eat earlier as Kim will have a get together at her place.
I have 2 more notes to write in cards & then I'll be thru. The rest are sealed, stamped & ready to mail. I'm glad that's over. Now to making cookies but I wait a bit on that.
Yesterday Barb took me to the dentist & I said I'd walk home. Dr. Walters' office is in the lower level so I had steps to climb. I was a little scared but had no reason to be. No problem with the stairs or walking home. Funny how we make things hard for ourselves by imagining things. Haven't walked over town but I'm sure I can. Not being able to walk compares to one having to give up driving & deending on others. At least for me.
Made apple crisp for dessert & of course I had to sample it & it's good. One of my favorites. In a short time Ed will be 13 years old. Another teenager! Of course one forgets but things weren't so bad when you 4 were teenagers.
Fri A.M.
We're having snow flurries but we still plan to go to Jamestown after I get my hair done. I know I had a perm on Mon. but I like ti washed on Fri as usual.
Soon time to go.

The Mets are playing(?) vs. Montreal. Barb says they won't win another game -- 9 after today . They have no offense. (The 22nd. They beat Pittsburgh last nite 1-0.)
I get a lot of smiles out of your letters when it comes to stories about Andy & Ed. If you hair hasn't started getting gray, it will, with Andy dating & getting his license next Dec. More fun. You know how white my hair is -- from all you kids' antics! HaHa. It's the genes.
Yesterday I walked to get my hair done. Afterwards I started walking home -- came out Liberty St. entrance & onto 3rd. I started feeling funny & was almost to that bldg. opposite the post office & my leg wouldn't hold me up so down I went. A mail man came to help me up & sat me on the bldg. steps. They called 911. A younger lady stopped her red SUV & stayed with me til the 911 came. I said I didn't want to go to the hosp. They asked me who the pres is, the year, the day & I could answer. After sitting awhile I got up & walked home & I was glad to get here. Took it easy the rest of the day & should have taken it easier on Thurs. but I didn't.
Guess I'm not the only forgetful one, Paul. In fact, Barb is soon catching up. (telephone deal)
When I talked to Andy, I asked him if he was home enough to watch his own TV. Bet Ed can hardly 'til he's 16.
The new pastor & her husband moved into the Sheffield parsonage today but ours doesn't start 'til Oct. 15th. They want time to get settled & relatives will be here for her ordination Oct. 11.
Are Tyler & Ross Hellenbrand brothers. They look alike but differ in height. Notice that Ross H. is also on the varsity roster. How many boys are there-- notice 2 more in the freshman roster. Notice a different last name: Bonebreak -- sounds like it could be a Amer. Indian name. A study on names would be interesting.
You have a nice booklet for fundraising. I can visualize it now. Andy results yet?
Wed the 24th aft.
Barb & I went to the Mall this A.M. Many sales at Bon Ton but nothing for me. It is a beautiful day, on the cool side - & Barb is riding her bike.
Haven't turned the furnace on yet but one of these days I will. It was 45 this A.M. Think I'll get my winter nighty out.
I'm sure you've heard about that bank robbery in Erie where the robber was blown up. It still makes the Erie news broadcast but nothing definite has turned up. Really weird.
Warren H. called & we're going out to lunch on Fri. Bensons, Warren & Anna, & me. At Cable Hollow golf course. Warren & Anna are home for a week & then off again.
Just called Cable Hollow & they have a banquet on Friday and aren't open to the public. I got Ted & he suggested Holiday Inn so we'll go there. Hollertzs weren't home so I'll try later.
What is an X Box game player? Barb was wondering if she, Dale & I should go together & get you & JoAnna a large gift, or more expensive but if it's too big, it would be hard & expensive to mail. Think it over. Otherwise it will be a small gift to open & money for after Christmas sales. Do you plan to have a Christmas party this year.
I'm watching baseball again. San Fran is ahead of Houston 1-0. I'm hoping San Fran gets home field advantage. We can watch the Mets for 3 nites playing the Pirates as it's on Fox network, Pittsburgh. Last Sun. was the Mets' last broadcast.
I'm making Swiss steak for supper. Made plans for the week & had planned on cabbage rolls but forgot to buy cabbage on Tues. Left my list at home but forgot only a couple of things

I did something today I seldom do on Sat. I worked. (When I bake it isn't work.) First I washed a load of underwear, socks, etc. -- waited for Dale's dirty clothes. Then I decided to wash the L.R. draperies. With my extension brush, I dusted the walls, corners, etc. Washed windows & polished the furniture. Need to vacuum the furniture, but that can wait til next week. Got the draperies up & washed trinkets I have around. So things are in order -- it's good enough for me. Also washed the light fixture by the stairs & my fingers aren't as agile as they were so it took me some time to get it back in order. Took me awhile to get the wires into the small holes. I had the "dangles" upside down so I had to start over. Next week I'll get my bedroom in order & the kitchen. Before I sat down I Put a pumpkin pie in the oven. Fall is her e-- our first pumpkin pie. Oh yes I washed 3 of the kitchen rugs & they are on the line. It's a beautiful day & I didn't want to wait any longer.
Dale enjoyed his 3 days of school. It's good to have him back. He is in the sun now & will now the lawn later.
Barb got a bike ride in this A.M. She's so concerned she won't get all the miles in she plans on. She has to go to Bert's to mow the lawn. She's been sitting in front of the TV watching tennis. That is her priority. Job comes second or third.
Last week Warren got whipped by Oil City, but the Wrrn. QB was sidelined by some infraction. Last nite he played & Wrrn. won big. The QB's dad is Barb's doctor. They have all boys, one in college at St. Bonaventure & 2 in high school & I'm not sure about any younger ones. Your next letter will tell me about Andy's games.
Later 6:45 P.M.
I'm set to watch the Mets at Philly. Dale likes salads so I made a tossed salad with chicken. It was good. And the pie was so good -- one of my favorites. Barb & Dale will have their dessert later. Yesterday's USA Today mentioned that people aren't ordering dessert because they dont' have time & dohnt' order them because of the economy slowdown. My problem many times, I don't know what to make. Mostly it's pies but a change is nice sometimes.
Just watched the end of the tennis game. 3 1/2 hrs. & Andy Roddick was down 2 sets but came back & won.
I sent out the invitations for the cottage meeting. Howard Ford called today & said they'd be away. The other 2 couples are Denise Johnson's folks & Lilith isn't well so I don't really expect them. And I doubt if Jr. & Lois Himes will come as Lois isn't well & having kemo therapy. The others are widows, Marie Mathis, Betty Casey, Irene Bloom, Lois Mattone, Alice Nasman (Wayne's mom), and Jessie Franberry. All widows. I would think most of them will come. Did I say these are 9 home & 7 Bible leaders, so someone takes more than 1 lesson. But I'm not doing it.
Tues. the 9th
Am I glad I know what we're having for supper tonite! Hamburgers & corn on the cob. Today I cleaned the kitchen my way. Washed all the cupboards on the outside, cleaned off the counters. Moved the microwave, toaster, & carts --vacuumed & washed the floor & will have to go over it before the 17th. But to my eyes things look OK. I'll stilt have to dust etc. & decide on refreshments. Tomorrow I'll highlight my bedroom. After my 2 pm soap, I took a shower, got dressed & sat in my chair & took a nap. Barb did the D.R. windows & the ones in the eating area -- on the outside. And she will clean the D.R. fan as I'm not steady on a ladder. I'm just glad I can do this much.
Today I got a big order from Schwan's. Tried their individual lasagna & pot pies. Got sausage links as Dale likes them & tried their peas. And the chicken which I always get every 2 weeks. They must have a hard time getting driver salesmen. I've had several different ones -- the hours are very long -- most come from Titusville. The last one up & quit & it didn't surprise me to have a new one this week. He said he likes the job but the hours are long. I could see he was married so a job is a necessity. I told him I usually only order chicken but wanted to try the lasagna & pot pies. I hope they are tasty as it would be a meal plan booster.
Last nite Marie Mathis called & we talked for about 40 min. About church, about some bringing their children to S.S. Tim Passinger will be S.S. superintendent so that is a plus. We're getting different younger people to each S.S. & that is a plus. Our pastor will start Oct 15th.
I'm glad I'm not buying clothes & shoes for children now. But you are making much more than Dad did.
Thurs A.M. the 11
Just walked to the mailbox on 5th & mailed birthday cards to Andy from Dale & mine. Just think 16 yrs old. Where has the time gone.
Thanks for the pictures of your front door. I like it a lot. It's nice you like to keep your home & yard in such good conditions. A good hobby. And it is nice that you work together on projects. When Dad worked I was the go for helper & he did the real work. I remember how hard he worked trying to get elec. wiring thru the walls for new plugs. Old houses don't have many elec. outlets & Dad added a lot of them. He'd be in the room trying to get wires thru & I'd be at the opening trying to pull it thru. Many happy memories.

I was glad to hear your library expansion is going forward. It will be a busy but rewarding time for you. It reminds me of Dad's building program at St. Paul. The reading room sounds so cozy. I'm happy for you & for your library.
They announced this A.M. that on May 18th a pastor couple will be in our area. The wife will preach in Sheffield-Ludlow parish & our committee will go to Sheffield to hear her. The pastor to be for Warren & Sheffield committee will come to Warren. Soon after I'm sure the woman will preach in Warren so we can hear her. I can only remember her first name Beth. That's all they said about the. Pastor Nancy preached today & she is so goo. We will miss her. We'll be lucky if the pastor we get will be just as good.
My poor Mets! They lost last nite's game & now Milwaukee is ahead 2-0. It's only the 4th inning so there is hope. I'm rooting for a loser. Surprise me Mets & turn it around!
It is nice to hear how well Andy is doing in pitching for his team. Too bad Middleton is so far away. You are lucky you can arrange your schedule so you can see Andy pitch.
WOW the Mets just got a grand slam & lead 4-2. Now I can smile!
Wed. May 7th
We went to Erie today. We stopped at Target on the way in & we sure like Target a lot. We spent some time there filling our cart. Then we went to The Olive Garden. I enjoyed minestrone soup, bread sticks & a dessert. Tarisumi (I tho't I memorized the correct spelling but I'm not sure). It was delicious but very rich. Barb had salad & a pasta dish. Next the Mall. Penney's where I only found a girdle. Then to Kaufman's & I got a pretty sweater set. A delicate pink & the shell has a crocheted inset in the front neck. Barb found a pretty deeper pink lined crocheted top. Floral stitch -- very pretty. Then Sears & I'm finding more styles to my liking at Sears. Found a light & medium blue print button down the front skirt. Just the style I like & nice material. A deeper plain blue top to wear with it & 2 more tops. One will be more for Fall as it is a deep brick red. The other is a print I saw at Sears, Lakewood, NY Mall. So I spent a little money today (all on sale) to help the economy! It is not always that I find things I like to I took advantage of the situation. It was fun.
Quality had small lobsters on sale so I got some & they will be added to the Sun. dinner menu.
We have one warm day & then they disappear. It has gotten dry so the rain we hare having is appreciated. We wore a jacket today. Next time we go to Erie Target will be our first stop.
I'm not sure if I told you this -- a menu idea. I got sliced roast beef (cooked-deli) & you heat it up in beef bouillon & serve it on buns with juice for dipping. It's easy & good. I'm fixing french fries for Dale now. And I fixed salads.
Thurs. May 8
I made a lemon meringue pie for dessert & it is so good. Sample it in the aft. plus a piece at dinner.
Last week Dale had a seizure & we told him he had to see a Dr. Kim's friend said not many Dr. are taking new patients but recommended a new to the area Dr. & Dale saw him this aft. He has to have some blood tests & got a prescription for medication . He has to take 3 capsules before bedtime. Barb said when the blood test she took -- when she gets them back she plans to call Dr. Strassburg for an appt. They are at an age when they should have a Dr. to be a patient. Lar & Kim go to their Dr. friend.
Tonite Lar & Dale helped Mr. Carey take a room air conditioner out of the attic. They have to be out by the 29th. They also plan a household sale, but first a van will come & take the furniture they want to save. So soon we'll have new neighbors.
Between the showers, I walked to CVS to get prescription filled.
Son bedtime so I'll say good night.
Enjoyed that computer incident at the library. Got a laugh out of it.

Patty's husband's funeral was this aft. at 4pm, preceded by a 2-hour visitation. I went over shortly after 2pm so I could see the end of the Mets game, which they lost in the 9th inning. Patty is taking the death very well but it must be very hard on her. The son Chipper was able to get leave from the Army.
The Mets won 2 out of 3 games with Montreal. David Cone started the first game & he was so good. Tom Gladden pitched yesterday & it wasn't hard to root for him & appreciate his work. He looks good in a Met uniform! Opening day wasn't good for him but he made up for it yesterday.
This A.M. they announced the Call Committee will meet with the candidate on Sat. Hope it all works out.
This will be a busy week with outside activities. I don't want to miss the Bible Study Tues. A.M. to see if anything is said about the candidate. Tues. aft. I get a "perm" at 2 pm So Mon. I'll do my Tues work -- the bathroom mainly -- & we'll get groceries in the aft.
Last Fri. we went to -- no we didn't we went on Wed. & I already covered that.
We'll celebrate Dale's birthday on Thurs & he wants steak, baked pot, tossed salad & apple pie. Easier to fix a meal then to find gifts for him.
Mr. Carey called Larry -- they'll be home in a couple of weeks. He said he'd never live in Fla. year round. The retirees go to dinner at 4:30 p, & take home doggy bags & that's not for them. They'll look in Buffalo for a home & Susan also plans to move there.
Enjoyed your letter. Nice that you were able to be with Roland & Linda. It is hard to understand Eric & his college studies. I would think that by now he'd be concerned for his future. I hope that Lindsay is making passing grades. I wasn't too surprised about Carolyn & Jim & their finances. I just know I never could have liked like that. I can enjoy my retirement -- only wish Dad could have lived longer. Too bad Carolyn didn't get into school teaching -- she trained for it in college. I can't understand any husband spending all his money & not investing anything for the future.
Mon. Apr. 7
School was called off today due to the weather & Tues. doesn't sound much better They get 6 days off over Easter & parents have planned trips. Lynn & family plan to go to Fla, taking 3 extra days. I wonder how Central Office will make up this snow day. We got groceries this A.M. I'm making soup for supper -- a good winter meal! - and a banana cream pie. It is cold as well, weatherwise.
Tues. A.M. 8th
Decided not to go to church this A.M. Decided to be lazy & take it easy. We didn't get the brunt of the storm & the sidewalks are clear for when I walk to the beauty shop. As soon as Dale left for work, I made a batch of the choc. cookies for a treat for the "girls" & Jerry at the beauty shop. They like my treats.
No school yesterday cut off the last day of the Easter break. Lynn's family will still be gone 11 days. Barb will sit the 2 cats & the dog at Lynn's & will do some housecleaning while they are gone. She will sleep there. They also have a fish tank.
My perm came out nice. Good to have curl again.
One Thurs. nite over dinner Kim was amazed at what Lar & Dale know about world events, places, etc. They both read papers & you learn a lot from the History Channel that they both like. Another time we were talking about writing & Kim wondered if writing was part of Dale's job. It is -- he has to write up what he does for a job. I'm sure people don't realize how much writing is included in most every job today.
Thurs A. M.
I made Dale's birthday apple pie right after breakfast. And it's a beautiful sunny day with blue skies & warming up. Who could ask for more -- me that it will stay this way & let us experience spring.
Bert got a carbon dioxide monitor & Barb bro't it home to test our house. The first time she plugged it in it made a screeching noise & she was sure gas was leaking. Dale told her gas contain carbon dioxide. She didn't believe him & she called the gas co & they told her the same thing. When I came home on Tues. she was here & said "I have a surprise". She had the monitor in the plug & no noise. She figures she didn't keep it in long enough because with that noise, I said turn it off. She can make mountains out of molehills. Both our furnace & stove are not that old.
It's 10 A.M. & Barb is still here. I need to finish a letter to Millie as her birthday is the 17th.
I'm enclosing an article that I enjoyed reading -- maybe you will.

Dale is soon ready to leave for work with a lingering headache that pained him all weekend.
I'm starting a letter as there are things to tell you.
Kim's heart is fine. The Dr. said it is a result of stress & caffeine so now she is drinking decaf & after a week the rapid heart beat returned to normal. The stress is another thing with school & her brother Paul. He has tried to quit drinking & was "on the wagon" until his cousin came to Atlanta & is a bad influence. They were in a bar after work & his cousin got drunk, was loud & got kicked out. Paul was drunk as well -- the police were called & Paul tried to drive away with the policeman hanging onto the truck. The policeman broke an arm & leg during the incident & Paul ended up in jail. Meanwhile a backup officer was speeding to the scene, ran a red light, hit a car & the officer was killed. So Paul is really in trouble. He's out on bail but Kim said she can't help him anymore. She has lent him money & she knows she'll never see it again & she thinks maybe it's time for him to learn to be responsible. She is sure he will get a jail sentence Naturally she is upset.
Gen call on Sat. & she is mixed up. Ed & John are always telling her what she can & cannot do & she doesn't like it. She still hopes to be able to drive but John will never allow it. It is nice to be outside of town, until you can't drive anymore & then you're stuck. She drove to the grocery store every day.
At church they announced the Bishop sent a resume of a pastor for us to consider. The "Call" committee will study it & more will be forthcoming. We are ready & really need a full time pastor so I hope it works out.
This A.M.'s paper had an obit notice that Charles Phillips, 63, died. When I looked further I noticed it was Patty Welsh's husband. Didn't know he was ailing. It was just a notice, not a complete obit. Patty was in church yesterday. It does say he died Sun A.M. so it must have been after she left for church.
I found a book by Sandra Brown I hadn't read. Envy. It was so good, I stayed up last nite past my 10pm bedtime to finish it. This is Dale's late week -- was still up by 6 A.M. Was in bed by 11 pm.
I wasn't totally surprised to hear you hoped to visit but had to change plans. I know when children become teenagers many different things can interfere with plans. It was a disappointment but I can understand your situation. I can remember vacations were different when you boys had jobs, etc. There will be other times. I'm anxious to hear about your visit with Roland & Linda -- visit to Mall of America & about JoAnna & Eddie's trip. At least you got a little change of
Tuesday, April 1
Saw Dr. Walters at 9:30 & got in right away. He had to take 2 xrays. Some bad news, some good news. The 2 back upper teeth on the left side are abscessed. They could be pulled but that would leave me with 2 empty spots on my chewing side. Or I could have root canals by another Dr. as Dr. W. doesn't do root canals on back teeth. It would cost me $1,000.00 He told me to think it over & call back. He also said there is no guarantee the root canals would last. But at 82 they should last me awhile & I have the money so that is no problem. But I'll talk it over with the family Thurs nite. I'm leaning toward root canals.
We had snow this A.M. but by the time I walked home, it melted. Did my Tues. work on Mon. as I knew I wouldn't want to start when I returned. I do plan to iron this aft.
Larry just called & said Patty. W. Phillips' husband killed himself. She came home from church and found him dead. How sad for her.
Thurs. Apr. 3rd. I made an appt. to have the root canals. I go Tues. the 15th at 9 A.M. I'll be glad to be rid of the dull ache. I plan to make a strawberry rhubarb crumble this aft. so it will be warm for dessert. It's like a crisp. A recipe from my Taste of Home.
It is soon lunch time & I plan to make BLT sandwiches.
I enjoyed the Mets win last nite, esp. the catch of the supposed home run of S. Sos the wind held up. Also enjoy that Atlanta is 0 & 2 so far.

Wisconsin Library Association members meet with Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton
The snow was south of us so we just have the cold weather.
This A.M. I made an apple pie & started veg. beef soup. Both tasted very good. Figured soup would go with the cold weather.
Mentioned I was to see the Dr. yesterday & all is well. See Dr. McNett in 4 months. Barb didn't feel good Fri. A.M. so I walked to get my hair done. 9 degrees but I bundled up & the sun was out. Walked home from the Dr's visit so I got some exercise.
When I got home I acted on an idea in my mind. Called Joyce O'Connor & asked if she'd be interested in watching "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with me. She said yes, & then asked her to come for dinner. Fixed chicken, baked pot, broc., fruit salad & the leftover cherry dessert. We had a great visit as we haven't seen each other for some time. She exercises (walking) at the Y & a couple of the men walkers have made passes at her. She said why are the married men the ones attracted to me. When first widowed she wouldn't have minded dating. She was in her late 40's when Dugey died & he was 51. But now she isn't interested. She is so funny talking about her experiences. We both enjoyed the movie & had some good laughs. I'll watch it again. I had 2 Greek girlfriends in high school & they talked about their experiences & both spoke Greek.
Barb didn't come downstairs til noon today & spent the day in her p.j.'s. As I was enjoying my dessert, after all was cleaned up, she came down dressed to go to BiLo. She wanted grapes & I had a list of her.
Glad your Legislative Day turned out to be a success. Guess Mother Nature is an Independent!
Bet it made you think of spring when you attended the Garden Expo.
No school on Mon. Pres. Day. But they will miss one of the days over Memorial Day due to a snow day Wed. last. The first one in spite of our winter.
All for now. Started a new puzzle so I'll work on that for awhile.
Oh I tho't of something. Sam's ex wife's house burned down early last Thurs A.M. At 2:30 A.M. she called Same & his latest gal answered the phone & wondered why she was calling Sam. But Sam & his ex have a good relationship & when he was without a gal, he would be with her.
We enjoyed golf & watching Tiger play after a lay off. He's on top as of Sat. nite.
Tues. the 18th
Thanks Andy & Eddie for my valentine.
We really have snow piled high but not as much as the Eastern big cities. We got about 5-6 inches. Lots to shovel.
Yesterday there was no school because of the holiday. Today they had a 2 hour delay.
The main roads are clear so we were able to go to the Mall & get groceries.
Last Fri. when I walked by Beaty in the aft. I saw my first robin. He's waiting for spring just like everyone else.
Gen called the other nite. Next summer they'll have to get a new roof & paint the house.
We've gotten some good strawberries at the store. From Calif. I remember Andy loves strawberries.
I'm at the kitchen table, looking out the window at the snow piles on the fir trees. One looks like a little lamb the way it settled on the branches.
When we looked at a window for over the kitchen sink, I would have like the kind you described you'd like. It would have been more expensive but I've regretted I didn't push for it.
Too bad we aren't closer with Lar & Dale experienced in brick laying. They did a nice job here but it was a big job. (Pat & Ted commented on it again today, Thurs.)
This A.M. Bette Davis was on the Perry Mason show. She was the lawyer while Perry was "sick" (probably on vacation) & it was good to see her again. She was a great actress.
Thurs. evening the 20th.
This A.M. Ted Benson called & asked if they could take me out to lunch. Of course I said yes. They picked me up at 12:30 & we went to Perkins. Pat said she had cabin fever & wanted to get out. We had a nice visit & I didn't get home til 3pm. Just in time for Perry Mason. Pat & Ted were going to the Mall after they took me home. I had pork loin tonite. Made the applesauce yesterday and a pecan pie this A.M. Also made dinner rolls yesterday as well as a batch of cookies. So things were under control so I could go out this aft. We hadn't been together since last Nov. So we had a lot to talk about.
When Kim was walking Torey he stepped in a puddle that had gasoline in it. Kim didn't realize it until they smelled the gasoline. They washed his paws but the smell still lingered so they were going to wash him again.
I didn't wear boots today as the sidewalks & roads were clear. It was lovely to have it a little warmer & the sky was so blue. BUT snow & colder is forecast for the weekend & colder temps.
Guess I've covered activities for this time.

Last Sat. Barb took Bert & her friend Laura to the Lakewood Mall. Laura also has money, lives in Hawaii & visits in Warren. Her husband is dead & he was originally from Warren. They had lunch at The Red Lobster & Barb had the best meal ever. Salmon with Cajun spices & shrimp on top of the salmon. She said it was so good. Bert doesn't drive anymore & they were so appreciative that Barb took them. In fact Laura wants to visit Alaska & asked Barb to go with her. Barb isn't interested as she wouldn't care to be with Laura that much.
This aft. Barb called for reservations for the reunion. They said they reserved the 3rd floor for the reunion. Will be nice to be together.
This A.M. I had a blood test as I see the Dr. on Fri the 14th. Barb took me over & I walked home. The walk wasn't that bad as I was bundled up. I had to fast for the test -- that was the hardest part -- had to wait to eat breakfast til after 9 A.M. Made myself oatmeal & it tasted so good.
I'm working on a jigsaw puzzle. It is coming together pretty good. Still haven't started my second book from the library.
I'm trying to plan dinners & it's a tough job. Never know what to have in spite of all my cook books & magazines.
Now it's Wed. pm. We can't seem to escape the snow & cold weather, but they say conditions should change soon & it can't be too soon for me.
Last nite we had baked fish and scalloped potatoes Some pot. were left over so I had them tonite with a slice of ham. I'll fix oven fires for Dale to be served at 7 pm.
Tomorrow we'll celebrate Valentines with steak & baked potatoes. Made a favorite dessert. Graham cracker crust, cream cheese mixture over the crust & topped with cherry pie filling. Easy to make & one the family likes.
I got the video My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I'm waiting til Fri. nite to view it. Sheila saw it at the Library Warren Theater downtown & she said she wants to get the video. She missed some of the dialogue because of all the laughter.
I finished my puzzle with only 1 piece missing.
Do you know the answer to crossword puzzle with 5 spaces. Prayer Wheel priests. I looked in the big dictionary to find it -- it is in the Buddhist religion so the answer is LAMAS. I'll remember that & I learned it by looking for the answer.
Thurs A.M. the 13th.
Barb went with Bert to see about a wig. There was one Barb tho't looked nice on Bert & she ended up buying it. It was layered with highlights. When she got home Bert wasn't sure she liked it & Barb wondered if she had talked her into it so it was Barb's fault. Last Sat when they went to Jamestown Bert wore it & both Barb & Laura like it on Bert. Sat nite Bert went out to dinner with friends & they raved about the new wig. Hearing that made Barb feel better & of course it made Bert happy.
Bert was asked to speak to a group & tell of her experiences in the business world but she refused. She tells Barb some stories & Barb said she should write down some of her experiences. One time in NYC she was going to a special dinner & she had cut her hand & it was bandaged. She didn't want to wear gloves to cover it so she put sequins on it. People tho't it was so clever & the next day she had 5 job offers & that led her to being in an ad agency with a responsible job for a woman at that time. She is 87 now. It was a man's world then & she made her way to the top. And she is a member of a long time Warren family so she would have a lot of interesting things to tell. It would be interesting if she would do it for the historical society.
Tomorrow I see the Dr. Hope it warms up a bit.
Not much going on here.

This is Dale's early week so I have most of my Monday duties accomplished
Yesterday Pastor Nancy Schwanke preached again. She is so nice _ preaches good sermons. It was a slim attendance because of the snowfall & this afternoon more snow is coming. Tonite is LCW's Christmas meeting with a planned menu. I'm bringing the strawberry-salad with a pretzel crust, cream cheese filing & topped with jello with strawberries. It makes a larger recipe. Janice Carlson will pick me up. She also gets Evelyn Berglund who lives at the Warren Apartments.
KMart advertised electronic toys & I looked at them bu didn't get one as I didn't think there was any a 10 yr. old boy would like. I did notice, in passing, one for playing solitaire but didn't give it a thought. Later on at home I tho't how nice it would be to have one to play when I'm in my chair watching TV. We went to the Mall last Friday & I got myself a new toy. It is more fun but very hard to win a game. I've only won 2 games. Barb likes it & uses it when I'm busy doing other things. She plans to get herself one. [She got herself one.]
I have an idea for me for a gift. A sweater vest size L that buttons or zips. To go with navy or black pants. Plain or otherwise -- some have striped fronts. Plain in a lighter color or even a red one. So you have an idea now.
I'll be thinking of you on the 17th when you have that breakfast meeting. That you'll make a good impression, but then why shouldn't you. Dad made good impressions when he met with church councils in Great Falls & Warren & when he was leaving or retiring all 3 congregations were sorry to see him go. Whatever happens all will work out for the best, you can be sure.
Wednesday. It is cold weather with snow. This A.M. I got a ride with Barb as I had to go to CVS for 2 prescription refills. Walked home & had worn an extra sweater which I didn't need.
That spoiled my day as I lost my ambition. But I did make & rolled out a single crust for a banana cream pie for Thurs. We had brats & sauerkraut for supper & they are good tasting. I told Dale there is an extra one if he wants it. He said no -- he weighed himself & weighs 180 lbs on our scale. Says he's getting fat!
Called Rose this aft. Found out Karen married "her man" in Canada. Kerstin goes to college in Toronto & plans to stay in Canada. She has a Chinese boyfriend. Rose has met him & said he's nice. The woman Rick is going with works at the hospital, is divorced & has 2 sons.
Rose spent Thanksgiving with Jim & family. Jim's youngest daughter Beth is thinking of the ministry when she finishes college. I think she is a soph. at Pitt.
Today I got a new magazine Bon Appetit -- hope that is spelled correctly. Barb has the magazine upstairs.
Last Sat. I made banana streusel coffee cake & I noticed a recipe in "B.A." for one. Similar but for the streusel my recipe mixed the brown sugar mixture with melted butter. The new recipe doesn't add any liquid & I like the dry mixture better. That is what I use on my regular coffee cake recipe. Thank you very much for the magazine. It's fun to study recipes.
Yesterday I got Christmas cards addressed, stamped. Now comes the notes. I plan to do some baking for the cooky walk at church so it will be the weekend before I think of them. Already started to get Christmas cards.
There is enough snow so last Sun. Lar, Kim, Friends & dogs went skiing & enjoyed it.
Thurs. aft. I've had a busy A.M. Made the banana cream pie & then decided since Dale wouldn't be home for lunch (mtg. at work) I made 2 batches of cookies. Shortbread formed into rolls & the ends dipped in melted chocolate after baking. Then I made the choc. cookies with Andes mint icing. Barb suggested I freeze some so she could have some for a cooky tray for Lynn & family. I just keep a few to eat as I don't want too many around (to eat). Dale doesn't care for them & Barb likes just a couple. Guess who'll be making the Christmas cookies for the tray! I'm trying a new chicken recipe tonite. It calls for 2 frozen packages of spinach souffle, rice, milk, Swiss cheese, onion, seasonings. Mixed together & put in the 13x9 dish & topped with the browned chicken. Sounds good & I hope it will be.
Hope you can read & understand this letter.

We had a pleasant surprise in church this A.M. A female pastor. She was pastor of Saron, Youngsville, married a local man, had a baby & took a leave of absence. The boy is soon 2 years old. She has been helping at the State Hospital. We needed someone to preach today & she did it. She is good -- wonder if she wants to get back to a congregation. The ones I spoke to were impressed & I wouldn't m ind a female pastor. She knows how to use her voice & all could hear & understand. She will help out again.
Dale forgot your birthday Paul. I told him he should know his siblings' birthdays. You will be getting a late package. It was my fault -- I didn't remind him! I do remind him of Andy and Eddie's birthdays as I think children prefer that. Arrival on the day.
Your letter really surprised me -- the "dirt" aimed at JoAnna during the campaigning. I don't think people like all the negative campaigning but I'm sure it will continue. Too bad. Guess you have to develop a hard shield in politics.
I haven't heard or seen anything about your class reunion. Maybe after the holidays. Did you say 35 years? Where has the time gone?
Am watching the Weather Channel & they predict 1-3" of snow overnite! Time to get the boots out.
Last Thursday I told Larry about the gift certificate from Quality & that I wanted to use it for something special. He suggested shrimp & lobster. Maybe I'll plan that for Christmas Eve. Turkeys are on sale at Quality so I'll get one for Thanksgiving this week.
I got Thanksgiving cards ready for Gen, Millie, Ruth & the boys this afternoon.
I read another Sandra Brown book. A trilogy on a Texas family. First part on the eldest son, 2nd part -- middle son, 3rd part - -the daughter. It was very enjoyable reading. Couldn't put it down so you know how I spent my spare time!
You've probably heard the baseball news that Colorado will trade Hampton & others to the Marlins for Chas. Johnson & others. Then the Marlins will trade Hampton to the Braves & that would mean they wouldn't sign Glavine. The Mets would like Glavine & if successful & he becomes a Met, I would have to cheer for him!!! Can I do it? I suppose if he still has it. What a situation!!
What are your Thanksgiving plans? Will you go to Two Rivers or will JoAnna's folks come to you?
Talked to Millie this past week. She & Linda always spend Thanksgiving with Allan & his wife. Gen is upset as it will just be Gen & John & they will probably eat out. Altho when I talked to Gen, she talked about making the dinner. Millie says they eat out all the time.
Mon. I have JoAnna's birthday package ready to mail & plan to mail it Friday A.M. when I get my hair done. The Christmas package isn't ready yet.
Wed the 20th
hIt was beautiful today so I put off washing the kitchen floor til afternoon & got a ride over town. In the car I put on my earrings & had a library book to return & letters to mail. Went into the P.O. U& mailed the letters & something was missing. I had put my purse on the floor & forgot to take it when I got out. So I started walking to Bert's house & had gotten to 5th Ave. when I saw Barb coming. So I got my purse. Then went to Blair's store & looked around. After it was the library to return books & get 2 more -- one of which I've already read. Didn't scan it far enough to see if I remembered reading it.
Bert was pleased to hear I'd forgotten my purse. You know "Misery loves company!"
Also made cookies this afternoon so I was busy.
Last weekend Dale cleaned the exterior of the stove, dishwasher & washer & dryer. Guess their looks didn't please him. They shine now.
Yesterday we went for groceries. If you spent $75.00 or more you got a free turkey -- not a brand name. I did buy a turkey & got the free turkey as well. Dale gets a turkey from work so Barb drove by the Salvation Army & gave them the free turkey. They sponsor a free Thanksgiving dinner & were asking for turkeys.
Warren had a 3rd murder yesterday. What's happening in our small city? Man & wife fighting & he hit her too hard. Head injury I think. Not a gun this time.
Finally found more Iris Johansen books. They are good.
Thurs the 21st.
Got your letter today. No gift list! Eddie is the only one we really need. Andy gave me his desire; Barb & I have started shopping. Need ideas for Dale. Barb has ideas of her own.'
Our TV isn't working. I'm at a loss as to what to do in its place. Dale said I should call if it keeps "snowy". But it could be a loose connection outside. And I'd hate to pay to have them put it together. If there is no TV tonite I'll be in the dog house.
When I read your letters, I think back & wonder what I could have done to get you to make the Honor Roll!!!! I know you made it once in awhile but you could have made it every report card! Of course they didn't have Playstation 2 back then.
We have a cloudy day & rain is suppose to start this afternoon. When we had TV this A.M., I think I heard it was snowing in Madison.
Lar & Kim come tonite & Torey too.

Andy pitching at Reedsburg baseball tournament (1st of 4)
Another hot, humid day. They keep saying a break is coming & I hope they are right when they say it's tomorrow. Low overnite temps & daytime in the 70's. I can hardly wait. The Weather channel tells how many days over 90 for Boston, NYC, Phila, and D.C. Phila about 32 days & around the same for D.C. Glad for the AC. But it doesn't do much for upstairs. Same in the winter-- I have a cold bedroom.
I meant to send you an article on the Rigas with a Buffalo flavor & I forgot. Used the wrong envelope. Will try to remember this time.
The beans didn't work out in the garden. But the zucchini & cucumbers give up plenty to eat.
Last Sat. was suppose to be cooler so I was up at 6 A.M. & made a cake, a coffee cake, banana bread (to use overripe bananas) & zucchini bread to use extra zucchini. The early start helped but I was hot by the time I leaned it all up. Not mad hot, just hot hot! It tastes good & nice to have on hand. This week I'll have to replenish my Danish for the freezer & make another zucchini bread. It's really a recipe I like.
Barb has been sanding the rail on the porch by the little room. She will paint it & also the roof part which has peeled. Dale will take a week off in August & he plans to plan the garage door.
James Lynch will have some competition after all. A woman, Sheila Brooker, will run against him. Put up by the Dem. party in place of the one who resigned. I'll vote for her. We still have to live thru his TV ads. Lots of people are getting sick of him & his picture is always in the paper. What an ego!
Tues the 6th
Yesterday I finished work by 10 A.M. & it was till hot & humid so I read a book by Judith McNaught & finished it by 4 pm so I had a really enjoyable day & read a great book.
Yesterday late aft. It cooled off & it was a good sleeping nite. This A.M. I( dusted my bedroom & cleaned the bathroom. After cleaning up & phoning in 2 prescriptions I walked to the library, got 2 books & picked up 2 meds.
Buffalo paper reviewed a new book by Diane Mott Davidson. 3 of her books were on the shelf, but not the new one, so I chose Killer Pancake. The write up said recipes are included in her books so that is a nice extra. Also got 2 book (last Fri.) by Ralph McInerny who writes Father Dowling & Andrew Broom mysteries. So I read varied themes & enjoy them all. I wrote down the names of the Madison author you mentioned & will look & see if I can find her book.
Lynn's folks celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary & all the family was home for it. Now they are on a trip to Italy & then will take a cruise.
Thurs. the 8th
The past few days have been super days so we can have an oven meal.
I have to say "thank you" to Paul & you ask "Why?" Yesterday I fixed chop suey for supper & as I was finishing a book & then doing my crossword puzzle, the liquid ran out & the meat started to burn before I smelled it. I was able to save most of the meat &wondered what liquid to use. Went looking for beef broth & noticed I had a beefy mushroom soup on the shelf. And that is why I'm thanking you Paul because in one of your letter you mentioned using that soup. It sounded good to me so I got some & id did the trick. My dinner was rescued. I had never noticed it before on the store shelf. It is on my shopping list.
Fri A.M. Ready to eat breakfast but wanted to sign off & send out love to all.
Just wrote checks for the house tax & personal tax & the newspaper. That's off my mind now.

Tuesday, April 30, 2002
I'm getting my hair done on Thurs. this week as later in the aft. I get my picture taken for a pictorial book for church. So I'd better get to writing a letter.
The furnace is still running & it feels good to have the heat.
In my casserole cookbook there is a recipe using tortellini in a cheese sauce. I tried it tonite but the more I thought about it the more I doubted the cheese sauce. I used a spag. sauce & added cheese. Barb really liked it & so did I. This is Dale's late Tues so I'll find out later what he likes. Very easy to fix!
I finally wrote to Darla & I got a letter from her on Fri. last week. She said write soon so I'll try. They had visited in Okla. & Texas on Chance's spring break. Darla's boys & Jerry (Darla & Gerald's) will be visiting them this summer. She said something about building a retaining wall so they can park the car better next winter.
I got the Mets cap for Eddie & will mail it when I mail the letters. Found one at Penney's last Fri.
When taking the picture, they recommend wearing long sleeves. I didn't want to wear a winter outfit so I found a navy jacket & slacks. Not a fitted jacket, light weight materials with sleeves that fold up. I'm sure JoAnna knows what I'm talking about. Will be nice with other outfits it it's cool. They are very popular & in many colors. It feels good on me.
While I write this I'm enjoying a cup of coffee & your favorite "store bot" cookies. Frosted oatmeal. I like to have coffee and ..... after the kitchen is cleaned up.
I watched Montreal's hockey team beat the Boston Bruins last nite to take the series. Score 2-1. It was an exciting finish & I was rooting for Montreal.
I've also enjoyed watching the Braves get beat (poor grammar) & lay like they did in the 80s.
At work, they threw away an old TV. Dale spotted it & rescued it. Fiddled around with it & got it to work. I guess that one semester at school taught him a lot. He seems to be able to fix almost anything.
He's doing another transmission job for someone at work. Only it wasn't worth fixing. Last Sat he went to Seaman's to look for parts.
Dale found some Oatmeal Graham Crackers at Big Lots. We still have an opened pkg. of regular ones, so I haven't tasted them yet.
Last Thurs. Kim said "29 more days until school is over." Teachers count the days as well as students.
We were discussing what to get Lar for his 50th birthday. Kim said he loves the cherry beer served at Liberty St. Cafe & available at one of the places in Warren. The catch -- it is expensive & comes only by the case @ $100.00 So we decided to go together & get him a case as he would like that & yet wouldn't expect it. Lar also had it at a friend's home -- the one who bot the Dr's home on 4th Ave - whose name I can never remember.
Wed. A lovely day so I walked over to the bank & cashed a check. Also sent the pkg. for Ed. to the library.
Dale said he'd mow the lawn tonite -- more showers are forecast for tomorrow. But Sat. is suppose to be a lovely day. Returned library books today, but didn't get any new ones. Maybe on Sat. I'll take a walk. The Dam is at summer pool level measure so we've had a lot of rain & that will help.
Noticed today that Northwest Savings is putting a new front on the old Levinson's facing Liberty St. Like an overhang -- curved & a copper color. Hard to explain but maybe there will be a picture in the paper once it is complete. They are trying to get owners to update their buildings.
Bert will be home next Mon. so Barb is finishing up painting & getting the kitchen in order. She'll also get groceries so Bert will have food on hand. Barb bro't home one of the drawers to work on here. Must be as old as the house. Metal & it is rusted. At least it will be cleaner with new paint & new contact paper in the drawer bottom.
May is here today. Hard to believe it. The Phillies are playing at San Fran this aft. It's on ESPN.
Soon time to think of dinner plans.

Summer is here for a few days. Walking over to get a perm this aft. I met a man on the bridge who said "This is more like it. A couple of weeks ago, I felt like I'd been exiled to Siberia." It is nice to have curl in my hair again.
I strayed from my schedule this A.M. Put off cleaning the bathroom til tomorrow but did change my sheets. After Dale left I made potato salad for tonite along with hamburgers. Took a shower & didn't do much more. this aft. we got groceries & I am just taking it easy.
Barb went for a bike ride on her new bike. The tires needed more air & she had to get a new pump.
She decided she wanted the Cheesy Italian Chicken for her birthday dinner & German choc. cake. Both are easy to fix. We'll celebrate on Thurs. when Lar & Kim are here.
Sheffield had its 6th bomb alarm & that day it was raining & they were outside for over an hour. It took the Sheriff awhile to get there due to another emergency. Now they are offering a $500.00 reward for information. Kim said they can't just disregard them because of a law the building must be searched. The notes are always found in the bathrooms. The principal said if it doesn't stop, they'll have to make up the time in June.
If this weather keeps up Dale will be getting his "summer car" ready to drive. He's talked about it.
Bob & Lynn got a car for Marisa to drive & Bob will also drive it. She is 16 this month but now Bob & Lynn decided she can't drive until she is 17. She is very sassy, using vulgar language & only get 2's in school. Barb said she has never seen Marisa study or even read a book. So sad with all the opportunities she can have.
Last nite Braves at Mets were on ESPN Mon. nite baseball. Naturally I was watching. In the 1st inning it was Braves 3-0. A few innings later it was 5-1. So I switched & watched Trauma - Emergency Room as it was a new issue. But I would switch back & forth & miracle or miracles the Mets caught up so it was 6-6. I stayed up thru the 11th inning & missed the Mets winning run in the 12th. I was thrilled the A.M. to read that the Mets won.
Seeing I got 34 waist for Dale's new pants, I thought a 34 belt would work but it didn't. Had to exchange it for a 36 waist.
Now it's Thurs. the 18th & I'd better get it finished so I can mail it on Fri.
Called Millie for her birthday. Yesterday Gen & Edith took her out for a birthday luncheon & then they went to Edith's for dessert. Gen still drives but Millie doesn't feel safe with her. Ed & Gen eat out a lot because Gen can't seem to get a meal together. She hasn't talked to her Dr. about her condition. I'm sure there is some medication that could help.
Sat. nite Millie's children are taking her out for dinner. Millie was surprised as she thinks this is more for a 90th birthday. Jokingly she told Linda "Maybe you don't' think I'll reach my 90th." She is 87.
John will be visiting Ed's relatives in Sweden this summer. They visited in E. Long. & urged him to visit Sweden.
I got some summer tops from the attic & got them washed & ironed. Summer came early but it won't last for which I'm thankful. Prefer a bit of spring first.
This A.M. I baked a German choc. cake from a box & the icing is also in a can. Who is lazy? Barb said it was OK to use a box cake. They come out better than one made from scratch.
I can hear the kids out at Jefferson. I'm sure the buildings get stuffy in this unusual heat.
The paper said 1 in 4 in our county get Soc. Sec. retirement & the young people don't come back after college. Nothing for them here. I'm sure that is true of many small communities.
Saw in the state news in USA Today that the Rep. gov. lost 3 of his campaigners -- top men. That doesn't sound good for him.

Here it is Wed. the 10th & I'm just starting a letter & no excuses. Just lazy.
Tues A.M. I got the bathroom cleaned & clean sheets for my bed before I went to an 11 AM study at church. We're meeting twice a month now.
We'll celebrate Dale's birthday tomorrow when Lar & Kim come. But I wanted something different tonite so ordered pizza & Pzone. Got a classic Pzone & we all sampled it. I liked it.
After lunch today I walked over town to get some birthday wrapping paper. I sent to Penneys for Dockers pants & a belt for Dale. Khaki in 34-36 & a brown belt. Barb go him a shirt. Dale checked the pants in the catalog & okayed them. He chose shrimp fettuccine for his birthday dinner & apple pie for dessert.
Stopped at the library & got 2 books. Another one by Sandra Brown, The Witness & The Upstart by Catherine Cookson. It was a beautiful day for a walk.
Watched the Mets defeat Chicago this aft. on ESPN. Successive homeruns by Alomar &Pizzata Piazza, whose name I should know how to spell!
With all the mistakes it doesn't take long to forget how to write.
As I said on the phone, Sheila loved the leather coat & it fit her so well. I know she appreciates it so I was glad to give it to her.
Dale saw that the grass in the back yard is ready to be cut. We had a nice rain yesterday. Dale is sharpening the blades of the lawn mower so it will be ready to cut the lawn.
This week we'll be watching the Masters this weekend. It's a beautiful golf course & we'll see if Tiger Woods will play a good game. The USA Today shows a picture of his new Swedish girlfriend. A cutie. Was a nanny for Jasper Parnevik.
It's 10:30 AM Thurs. & I have to brag a bit -- after all I'm 81 years old. I made the apple pie first this A.M. & I hope it tastes as good as it looks. Then I showered, got dressed, made my bed, put out the garbage. Started dinner rolls, then had my coffee & a roll. Finished my rolls & remembered I meant to make choc. chip PB cookies so I got them made & now I'm sampling one with coffee. Just 1 pan to wash & then I'm thru. So I think I have a right to brag!! Also did a load of wash.
Last nite I stayed up past my bedtime to see the Phillies beat the Braves. In teh 11th inning with a home run. Phillies tied it up in the 9th with a home run off Smoltz. You can be sure I was happy! And Toronto best the Yankees. Former Met Venture struck out.
Think I'll mail my letters on Fri. instead of by Wed.

I had to give in & turn the furnace on or freeze. Even put my flannel nightie on for more warmth. The electric blanket is on the shelf. Surely by now, I wouldn't want it. When will it end. Then warm humid weather will come so I'd better not complain.
We keep our puzzles & do them again. Barb brought a harder one down from the attic so I have it on the card table. This one will go slower.
The Mets finally won a game -- it was on TV. Also today & Sun. so I'll watch & put a piece of ht puzzle in now & then. I'll support them no matter how bad they are. A true fan! Noticed in the paper that Don Zimmer has a book out. Guess it was Don Z. being hit that led to the players wearing helmets.
The summer schedules at church starts in June so I'll be going to church for 9:30 services. Tomorrow is Pentecost so members are asked to bring red geraniums to church & then they will be planted outside.
Last week of school coming up & I bet Kim is looking forward to Fri. as much as Andy & Eddie are.
Bert is back from NYC. Barb is over there today as Bert is expecting company tomorrow & Barb is doing last minute cleaning. Bert gave Barb a late birthday gift of $30.00 & she wants to take Barb out to lunch when they can agree on a day. Maybe in Jamestown.
Bert is still having trouble with her eye after cataract removal. She drives her car, but only in Warren. Barb gets groceries for her.
Sunday.
It's only in the 50's today. The trouble with this weather is -- I like to drink coffee oftener & I like something sweet with it & that doesn't keep my weight down. Such problems!
You're surly busy with your house. I bee it looks so nice. Soon I'll see. And you have your July party coming up & it will be here before you know it.
St. Paul & First Luth. used to have Bible School together. This year First Luth. is having Vacation Bible School & St. Paul isn't. Our attendance is way down. Dad worked so hard to have a successful church so it is very discouraging to see things going down. Synod meeting is June 8 & 9 & the delegates will be electing a new Bishop. Paull Spring is retiring Bishop. He used to serve St. John in Pleasant Township.
Kim stopped by yesterday. She gets her hair cut in Jamestown & then they shop. She went to the one store Dale likes & got accessories for their bedroom at camp. It's just about completely finished. Lar was doing the finishing touches. Kim was hoping to mow the lawn at camp but it's hard to when it showers so much. Soon she can do it during the day.
Monday June 4
This is Dale's early week so I was up & at chores early. Change Dale's bed, a load of washing. Clean the basement shower & the bathroom down there. Then I dusted downstairs.
Some time ago I received a book from Reader's Digest, the first of 4 & I can't remember getting any info concerning it. The 2nd book arrived last Sat. Didn't open it & a little after ( A.M. I walked to the Post Office to send the book back (cost about 20.00 & I didn't want it.) When it hadn't been opened I dint' have to pay the postage -- they'll collect at the other end.
Then I returned 2 books at the library & got 2 more. Together Alone by B. Delinsky. Started reading it & just finished it at 9:15 pm. It was so good. Made supper in between -- oh yes I did stop long enough this aft. to make molasses cookies & choc chip. Her books are so readable. Set in New England.
Dale is saying her his going to sell his white car & of course the name won't come to me. Not the El Camino. Not the Blazer. Ah, the Monte Carlo!
I'll sign off & mail this Tues.
