Today we voted.  The main issue on the ballot was to elect a judge.  Man vs. woman.  We voted for the woman.  She came in 2nd in the nominating election, beating at least 3 other men.  We hope she can do it but it's a man's world.  The newspaper backed the man.

This aft. I walked over to see Rose.  I thought she might be sitting in a chair but she was in bed.  You could see she has gained weight.  A diaper on a chair by her.  No teeth in her mouth so she was hard to understand.  I feel so bad for her.  It made me want to cry.  She asked about dad & I told her he died.  She repeated the question several times.  She couldn't believe it & said why don't I know this.  Her hands were trembling like Parkinson's.  S he did recognize me.  Violet is in the same room.  She looked good but no teeth.  But I wouldn't have recognized if I hadn't known Violet was in the same room.  So sad.

All I did today was 1 load of wash.  I did a little ironing, not much.  A day off so I'll have to make up for my idleness tomorrow.  The kitchen floor says' "Wash me".

Dale admitted last nite "I must be a perfectionist".  He worked late on his white car putting in a new top for the interior roof.  I'm not sure of the exact term.  He had sent away for material & finally got it to fit in to his satisfaction.

I really got the picture of those two couples at the concert.  Do you think they realized the fools they made of themselves?

Now it's Thurs the 10th

The week is soon over -- I don't do that much on Friday.  In 2 weeks we'll have celebrated Thanksgiving.  We're still waiting for suggestions from the boys.  Remember we want to send the package in time for JoAnna's birthday.

Kim had a reunion meeting tonite so she left early.  Lar walks Torey home.  I don't know why Torey has to be walked so much.  They have socks for him to wear to protect his paws. He's getting old & slow so he doesn't need as much exercise as a younger dog.  But that's not my business.  I just feel sorry for Torey.

My puzzle is soon finished.  Barb picked up 3 pieces from the floor.  With our patterned rug they are hard for me to see.

The girl scouts are collecting food.  They left bags at houses & they will be picked up the 21st.  I'll put some cans of food & peanut butter in it.  They suggest soups & macaroni & cheese are always good.  The mail carriers collect food in May & I always contribute.

This is Dale's week to work Sat. A.M.  They will be taking inventory so they get Sat. off.  Dale thinks that is fine with him.

Do you get the USA Today at the library?  If so, some Wed read Craig Wilson's article on the 1st page of the purple section.  He is around your age & from the Buffalo area.  He writes the most interesting articles.  I'm sure you could write articles like that & people would find them interesting to read.  Lar & I always read his articles.  Wilson happens to be gay & admits it. He & his "mate" have a dog & sometimes he mentions him. He graduated from Syracuse U.

Nothing exciting is happening here.  I'm just very thankful I can take care of myself after seeing Rose.  Make meals & do a little cleaning & baking.

Sunday, October 16, 2005

I was talking to Dick Hause after church.  They are football & baseball fans & Dick said Oct. is the best month for sports.  World Series& football.  We just watched Pittsburgh get beat (good grammar?) & now Buffalo is on the screen.  I'll also turn to baseball.

I had a nice birthday.  We enjoyed our dinner at Chiodo's.  They have a no smoking section & it was full.  Ed O'Neill was there with his wife celebrating an older couple's anniversary.  He is a big guy. It always amazes me how many people Lar & Kim know when we are out.

Barb gave me a black purse; Kim & Lar gave me lottery tickets but I didn't win much.  Dale gave me automatic car door openers but first he has to put in a part to make them work.  2 of them so Barb & I will appreciate that.  I mentioned I tho't that was a nice thing to have & now we'll have it.  Lar & Kim have it on their car.

Because of siring heating prices Dale doubled what he gives me every payday.  I have been using that money as a Christmas club.  I have envelopes for my budget so I know what I'm doing.

After church today I put the electric blanket on my bed.  I'll be warmer now when I get into bed.

We plan to go to Jamestown this week -- most likely on Fri.

I finished my puzzle & Barb started one today.  She said I can work on it.

Barb ordered a cake for my birthday but she ordered 1/2 sheet cake instead of 1/4.  So I put half of it in the freezer & we still have plenty to eat.  She'll take some for Scott & Bob.  It is a good tasting cake.

Mon A.M. Oct 17

Barb cut out & instructed me to enclose the clippings from the Buff. Sun. paper.

I saw the Dr. last Fri.  Blood pressure very good & all else is fine. Got a flu shot.

Yesterday Dale put the "thing" that helps close the front screen door.  Barb had taken it off for painting.  He also planed the top of the door as it stuck a bit.  Dad installed the screen door & it didn't please Dale.  Something was in the way to make it perfect. People who get their cars worked on by Dale get an A-One job performed.

Tues. Oct 18

This A.M. Alice Nasman called me & she talked for an hour.  She wasn't in church Sun. as she wasn't feeling good.  At the end of 1 hour she said thanks for talking to me -- I don't have anyone to talk to.  She has a sister but she isn't well & doesn't want to burden her. Think I wrote that Wayne went to school to work on motorcycles & got a job in Erie.  They aren't busy during the winter so he was laid of.  Alice has to be careful because of her heart.  If I can hep by listening so be it.

This A.M., I washed the kitchen floor with a new mop.  It is a wider sponge & so easy to use.  I'm glad I got it.l

I ordered, from L. L. Bean, 2 pr. pants & a shirt for Lar.  One pr. of pants is flannel lined he likes for colder weather.  They were Kim's suggestion.  I showed the jeans (twill) to Dale & he likes them, color & all.  Olive color.  I saw a sweater at L. L. Bean I like & plan to order it as well as pants for Dale.  Sat. nite getting ready to go out to eat, Dale said "I guess I'll have to get some new clothes."  Was surprised to hear him say that.  Usually he receives clothes for gifts.  He needs to weed some clothes he never wears from his closet & give them to Goodwill.  But he hates to party with anything.

Thurs. Oct 20

Tonite I fixed oven fried chicken.  I had gotten 2 acorn squash, sliced them.  Put the slices in a dish & poured melted butter & maple syrup over them.  It was very good -- Larry loved the veggie. I did too.  Of course I baked them.  Apple crisp for dessert.

Wed. Bon Ton had a 2 day sale -- Wed & Thurs -- so we went to the Mall & did more Christmas shopping.  When I call for your birthday I'll want some suggestions for Christmas ideas!  I'll still send money for Christmas.

I'll mail this when we go to Jamestown tomorrow.

Sunday, September 4, 2005

Sun. again & I'm watching the Mets against Marlins.  Soon baseball will be in the past.  It's fun to watch football.  Yesterday I watched Wisconsin win the game.  Sure was a sea of red in the stands.  Number 2 Brian Calhoun sure can run. (I like the word "sure"!)

Yesterday we received the Penneys Christmas catalogue & you know what that means. Suggestions!  Barb's E mail is.....I'll enclose the slip so you can E mail us ideas.  I'll still send money but like ideas for something to open on Christmas Eve or Day.  So put on your thinking caps -- you know we like to start early.

The gas project on our street is completed & grass is planted.  I suggested Dale water it but he hasn't followed thru.  He did once & Barb did as well.

We had a guest organist today -- a Barry Keller.  The pastor didn't make any comments so we don't know if he is temporary.  He did OK.

Dale's El Camino is in a rented garage & mice got into it & smelled up the car.  So he's been cleaning it until it is fine with him.  Smells gone.  He wants new wheels & tires for it & then it will be complete.  He just got new tires for the white car.  Names of cars don't stick in my mind.

It was 52 this A.M. but it has warmed up.  It is nice to be able to wear fall clothes again.

I watched a little volleyball yesterday on TV.  We played volleyball in high school & it was fun.  I'm sure it is a faster game today.

Barb keeps track of mileage when she rides her bike.  Her dream is 1000 miles but she only has 600 miles sol far.  Last year she couldn't ride at all, so she is happy with what she's dong (so far).  She'll still be able to ride before it gets cold.

The little house across the st. might have sold.  A man & woman have cut down a tree & removed all the weeds in front of the house.  All the stuff is piled up -- wonder if the city will take it away.  It's way past the time alloted for pick up.  Time will tell.

Dale went up to our Mall & brought me home a pkg. of Oreos and 3 dish cloths & I haven't bought any for ages.  He got them at Big Lots.

Labor Day

The Mets were on the NYC TV channel but Dave O'Brien who also works for ESPN wasn't available.  And the announcer talked all the time (not Tom) so I had to mute the broadcast so I missed the usual color of the game.   Tom & David are great together.  And they lost.  They never can get the hits when they need them.  Carlos Beltran is a "bust" this year for the Mets.  Maybe it takes a while to get used to playing in NYC.  I hope he's better next year.

I don't know if I have an allergy or a cold but I'm sure using the Kleenex.

Wed. the 8th

We have a chipmunk that is eating the sunflower seeds.  They are big one 10"-12" in diameter & he's just about finished it.  We try to scare him but we don't always see him. Barb cut them down to dry.

Barb says Andy should be happy that the Braves are on top in their division.  But my question is "Can they win the Big One?"  They've only won 1 World Series, haven't they?

I have a recipe for banana blueberry bread.  Dale likes them separately but isn't sure of the combination.  So I'll try it as I have 2 ripe bananas I want to use.  I'm sure it will get eaten.

Fri. the 9th

Just got home from getting my hair done.  Started a load of wash & will finish my letter.

Kim & Lar are fine.  Next week Thurs. Kim & friends will help Betsy Moran celebrate her 50th birthday.  so it will be a short visit here for supper.

The other Betsy (your classmate) doesn't know if she can take 2 more years of teaching. She bot an old house next to her property, had it torn down so she'd like to get that loan paid off.  At the new elem. school she teaches 2 subjects & they have to follow a schedule -- they change from room to room.  Teacher teaches same subjects to all her classes.  If they run behind there is no time to make it up.  It has been hard getting started in a new school where all kids are bussed but it should get smoother & easier as time goes by.

The Mets are playing(?) vs. Montreal.  Barb says they won't win another game -- 9 after today .  They have no offense. (The 22nd.  They beat Pittsburgh last nite 1-0.)

I get a lot of smiles out of your letters when it comes to stories about Andy & Ed.  If you hair hasn't started getting gray, it will, with Andy dating & getting his license next Dec.  More fun.  You know how white my hair is -- from all you kids' antics!  HaHa.  It's the genes.

Yesterday I walked to get my hair done.  Afterwards I started walking home -- came out Liberty St. entrance & onto 3rd.  I started feeling funny & was almost to that bldg. opposite the post office & my leg wouldn't hold me up so down I went.  A mail man came to help me up & sat me on the bldg. steps.  They called 911.  A younger lady stopped her red SUV & stayed with me til the 911 came.  I said I didn't want to go to the hosp.  They asked me who the pres is, the year, the day & I could answer.  After sitting awhile I got up & walked home & I was glad to get here.  Took it easy the rest of the day & should have taken it easier on Thurs. but I didn't.

Guess I'm not the only forgetful one, Paul.  In fact, Barb is soon catching up.  (telephone deal)

When I talked to Andy, I asked him if he was home enough to watch his own TV.  Bet Ed can hardly 'til he's 16.

The new pastor & her husband moved into the Sheffield parsonage today but ours doesn't start 'til Oct. 15th.  They want time to get settled & relatives will be here for her ordination Oct. 11.

Are Tyler & Ross Hellenbrand brothers.  They look alike but differ in height.  Notice that Ross H. is also on the varsity roster.  How many boys are there-- notice 2 more in the freshman roster.  Notice a different last name:  Bonebreak -- sounds like it could be a Amer. Indian name.  A study on names would be interesting.

You have a nice booklet for fundraising.  I can visualize it now.  Andy results yet?

Wed the 24th aft.

Barb & I went to the Mall this A.M.  Many sales at Bon Ton but nothing for me.  It is a beautiful day, on the cool side - & Barb is riding her bike.

Haven't turned the furnace on yet but one of these days I will.  It was 45 this A.M.  Think I'll get my winter nighty out.

I'm sure you've heard about that bank robbery in Erie where the robber was blown up.  It still makes the Erie news broadcast but nothing definite has turned up.  Really weird.

Warren H. called & we're going out to lunch on Fri.  Bensons, Warren & Anna, & me.  At Cable Hollow golf course.  Warren & Anna are home for a week & then off again.

Just called Cable Hollow & they have a banquet on Friday and aren't open to the public.  I got Ted & he suggested Holiday Inn so we'll go there.  Hollertzs weren't home so I'll try later.

What is an X Box game player?  Barb was wondering if she, Dale & I should go together & get you & JoAnna a large gift, or more expensive but if it's too big, it would be hard & expensive to mail.  Think it over.  Otherwise it will be a small gift to open & money for after Christmas sales.  Do you plan to have a Christmas party this year.

I'm watching baseball again.  San Fran is ahead of Houston 1-0.  I'm hoping San Fran gets home field advantage.  We can watch the Mets for 3 nites playing the Pirates as it's on Fox network, Pittsburgh.  Last Sun. was the Mets' last broadcast.

I'm making Swiss steak for supper.  Made plans for the week & had planned on cabbage rolls but forgot to buy cabbage on Tues.  Left my list at home but forgot only a couple of things

Before I got my hair done, I went to CVS & picked up a refill prescription  had my hair done; & went to the bank for Sept. expenses.  After I put it in each envelope (food, hair, spend, etc.)  Then Barb & I went to Jamestown.  No decent styles for older women.  Sears now has Lands End & I got a pair of those 29.50 shoes they advertise.   Good for bad weather. Ordered a pair last yr. & the size was way too big.  The 8 1/2 B fit perfectly.  Barb got a pair of light purpose jeans at Penney's.  Stretch material.  I looked for a birthday gift for you Paul, but nothing appealed to me.  So I plan to send money for birthday & you can choose your own sweater or shirt or whatever appeals to you.

We got the Penney's Christmas catalogue this past week.  If you have suggestions, please sent them.  Otherwise it will be money & yo can buy for the boys or they can spend it at after Christmas sales.

Barb & I have talked bout going out to lunch or dinner & we finally went tonite.  I told Dale I wasn't preparing dinner -- I needed a vacation -- & the 3 of us went to Chiodo's.  Dale & I had steaks & Barb had the fish fry.  I had coconut cream pie.  I really celebrated!  They have good food.  Laurie Heckler was our waitress.  Danny is a senior in college & Allison a senior at Warren.  She is a good athlete & has the body for it.

The Mets had a great series against the Braves.  Last nite's game was so exciting.  The Mets made 2 errors in the 9th inning & I thought they'll lose.  "O ye of little faith".  They wont the game 3-1, as well as the series.

Tonite the Braves are at Pittsburgh & in the 3rd inning the Pirates lead 3-1.

Dale has found things in the attic he forget he had.  All the instruction sheets of the stereo equipment he bought.  He saved magazines & now he realizes he needs to get rid of them. Someone in Sugar Grove takes paper, plastics, etc.

Sat Aug. 30

Made an apple pie & our favorite choc. cookies this A.M.  The heat of the oven felt good as it turned cool.  We had burgers & corn on the cob for supper.  Soon I'll have pie & coffee.  I'm watching the Mets vs. Phila.  Thankfully the rain is over.  The field is wet as they had an aft. rain .  The Mets lost last nite but no score yet in the 3rd inning.

Watched the W.V.-Wisc. game this aft. & fell asleep so I missed the winning score for Wisc.  I'm back in my 2nd childhood -- as kids if we were going to stay up past our bedtime, we had to take a nap.  My bedtime is usually 10 pm  & I'm ready to get up at 6 A.M.  Tonite's game is going fast so maybe I won't stay up past my bedtime.

Labor Day

By choice, this was my regular duty day to change Dale's bed, 3 load of wash & because it is rainy & cool, I made a coffee cake & dinner rolls.  The kitchen is cleaned up & I'm watching the Mets play Atlanta.  A little rain but I hope it can be a complete game.  Right now it is 202.

Tues the 2nd.

When Dale came home for lunch today he was a little upset.  He was told he has to go to school in Rochester for 3 days.  He would have to leave after work.  He left about 6:45 & should be there by now.  He won't be home til Fri.  They provide the car & it was a van.  It was that or a Neon & he preferred the van. These sessions have something to do with trucks. He told me but I can't remember.

Again I'm watching Braves vs. Mets, on TBS.  The Mets won Sun. & are ahead 2-1 but it's only the 6th inning & a lot can happen.

Wed the 3r4

I got the glassware in the dining room washed this A.M.  so the things open to the eye are clean & shiny.

This aft. I'm watching the Mets-Brave game on ESPN and it looks like the Mets will take the series.  6-1 in the 8th.  Trachsel is pitching -- one more inning to go & he'll have pitched the entire game.  That doesn't happen very much anymore.

Thurs.

Not much is happening here.  Lar & Kim were here.  Torey missed Dale to give him treats. He got them from Lar & Kim.  Finally nice weather in coming.

Monday, December 1, 2002

This is Dale's early week so I have most of my Monday duties accomplished

Yesterday Pastor Nancy Schwanke preached again.  She is so nice _ preaches good sermons.  It was a slim attendance because of the snowfall & this afternoon more snow is coming.  Tonite is LCW's Christmas meeting with a planned menu.  I'm bringing the strawberry-salad with a pretzel crust, cream cheese filing & topped with jello with strawberries.  It makes a larger recipe.  Janice Carlson will pick me up.  She also gets Evelyn Berglund who lives at the Warren Apartments.

KMart advertised electronic toys & I looked at them bu didn't get one as I didn't think there was any a 10 yr. old boy would like.  I did notice, in passing, one for playing solitaire but didn't give it a thought. Later on at home I tho't how nice it would be to have one to play when I'm in my chair watching TV.  We went to the Mall last Friday & I got myself a new toy.  It is more fun but very hard to win a game.  I've only won 2 games.  Barb likes it & uses it when I'm busy doing other things.  She plans to get herself one.  [She got herself one.]

I have an idea for me for a gift.  A sweater vest size L that buttons or zips.  To go with navy or black pants.  Plain or otherwise -- some have striped fronts.  Plain in a lighter color or even a red one.  So you have an idea now.

I'll be thinking of you on the 17th when you have that breakfast meeting.  That you'll make a good impression, but then why shouldn't you.  Dad made good impressions when he met with church councils in Great Falls & Warren & when he was leaving or retiring all 3 congregations were sorry to see him go.  Whatever happens all will work out for the best, you can be sure.

Wednesday.  It is cold weather with snow.  This A.M. I got a ride with Barb as I had to go to CVS for 2 prescription refills.  Walked home & had worn an extra sweater which I didn't need.

That spoiled my day as I lost my ambition.  But I did make & rolled out a single crust for a banana cream pie for Thurs.  We had brats & sauerkraut for supper & they are good tasting.  I told Dale there is an extra one if he wants it.  He said no -- he weighed himself & weighs 180 lbs on our scale.  Says he's getting fat!

Called Rose this aft.  Found out Karen married "her man" in Canada.  Kerstin goes to college in Toronto & plans to stay in Canada.  She has a Chinese boyfriend.  Rose has met him & said he's nice.  The woman Rick is going with works at the hospital, is divorced & has 2 sons.

Rose spent Thanksgiving with Jim & family.  Jim's youngest daughter Beth is thinking of the ministry when she finishes college.  I think she is a soph. at Pitt.

Today I got a new magazine Bon Appetit -- hope that is spelled correctly.  Barb has the magazine upstairs.

Last Sat. I made banana streusel coffee cake & I noticed a recipe in "B.A." for one.  Similar but for the streusel my recipe mixed the brown sugar mixture with melted butter.  The new recipe doesn't add any liquid & I like the dry mixture better.  That is what I use on my regular coffee cake recipe.  Thank you very much for the magazine.  It's fun to study recipes.

Yesterday I got Christmas cards addressed, stamped.  Now comes the notes.  I plan to do some baking for the cooky walk at church so it will be the weekend before I think of them.  Already started to get Christmas cards.

There is enough snow so last Sun. Lar, Kim, Friends & dogs went skiing & enjoyed it.

Thurs. aft.  I've had a busy A.M.  Made the banana cream pie & then decided since Dale wouldn't be home for lunch (mtg. at work) I made 2 batches of cookies.  Shortbread formed into rolls & the ends dipped in melted chocolate after baking.  Then I made the choc. cookies with Andes mint icing.  Barb suggested I freeze some so she could have some for a cooky tray for Lynn & family.  I just keep a few to eat as I don't want too many around (to eat).  Dale doesn't care for them & Barb likes just a couple.  Guess who'll be making the Christmas cookies for the tray!  I'm trying a new chicken recipe tonite.  It calls for 2 frozen packages of spinach souffle, rice, milk, Swiss cheese, onion, seasonings.  Mixed together & put in the 13x9 dish & topped with the browned chicken.  Sounds good & I hope it will be.

Hope you can read & understand this letter.

Sunday, November 17, 2002

We had a pleasant surprise in church this A.M.  A female pastor.  She was pastor of Saron, Youngsville, married a local man, had a baby & took a leave of absence.  The boy is soon 2 years old. She has been helping at the State Hospital.  We needed someone to preach today & she did it.  She is good -- wonder if she wants to get back to a congregation.  The ones I spoke to were impressed & I wouldn't m ind a female pastor.  She knows how to use her voice & all could hear & understand.  She will help out again.

Dale forgot your birthday Paul.  I told him he should know his siblings' birthdays.  You will be getting a late package.  It was my fault -- I didn't remind him!  I do remind him of Andy and Eddie's birthdays as I think children prefer that.  Arrival on the day.

Your letter really surprised me -- the "dirt" aimed at JoAnna during the campaigning.  I don't think people like all the negative campaigning but I'm sure it will continue.  Too bad.  Guess you have to develop a hard shield in politics.

I haven't heard or seen anything about your class reunion.  Maybe after the holidays.  Did you say 35 years?  Where has the time gone?

Am watching the Weather Channel & they predict 1-3" of snow overnite!  Time to get the boots out.

Last Thursday I told Larry about the gift certificate from Quality & that I wanted to use it for something special.  He suggested shrimp & lobster.  Maybe I'll plan that for Christmas Eve.  Turkeys are on sale at Quality so I'll get one for Thanksgiving this week.

I got Thanksgiving cards ready for Gen, Millie, Ruth & the boys this afternoon.

I read another Sandra Brown book.  A trilogy on a Texas family.  First part on the eldest son, 2nd part -- middle son, 3rd part - -the daughter.  It was very enjoyable reading.  Couldn't put it down so you know how I spent my spare time!

You've probably heard the baseball news that Colorado will trade Hampton & others to the Marlins for Chas. Johnson & others.  Then the Marlins will trade Hampton to the Braves & that would mean they wouldn't sign Glavine.  The Mets would like Glavine & if successful & he becomes a Met, I would have to cheer for him!!!  Can I do it?  I suppose if he still has it.  What a situation!!

What are your Thanksgiving plans?  Will you go to Two Rivers or will JoAnna's folks come to you?

Talked to Millie this past week.  She & Linda always spend Thanksgiving with Allan & his wife.  Gen is upset as it will just be Gen & John & they will probably eat out.  Altho when I talked to Gen, she talked about making the dinner.  Millie says they eat out all the time.

Mon.  I have JoAnna's birthday package ready to mail & plan to mail it Friday A.M. when I get my hair done.  The Christmas package isn't ready yet.

Wed the 20th
hIt was beautiful today so I put off washing the kitchen floor til afternoon & got a ride over town.  In the car I put on my earrings & had a library book to return & letters to mail.  Went into the P.O. U& mailed the letters & something was missing.  I had put my purse on the floor & forgot to take it when I got out.  So I started walking to Bert's house & had gotten to 5th Ave. when I saw Barb coming.  So I got my purse.  Then went to Blair's store & looked around.  After it was the library to return books & get 2 more -- one of which I've already read.  Didn't scan it far enough to see if I remembered reading it.

Bert was pleased to hear I'd forgotten my purse.  You know "Misery loves company!"

Also made cookies this afternoon so I was busy.

Last weekend Dale cleaned the exterior of the stove, dishwasher & washer & dryer.  Guess their looks didn't please him. They shine now.

Yesterday we went for groceries.  If you spent $75.00 or more you got a free turkey -- not a brand name.  I did buy a turkey & got the free turkey as well.  Dale gets a turkey from work so Barb drove by the Salvation Army & gave them the free turkey.  They sponsor a free Thanksgiving dinner & were asking for turkeys.

Warren had a 3rd murder yesterday.  What's happening in our small city?  Man & wife fighting & he hit her too hard.  Head injury I think. Not a gun this time.

Finally found more Iris Johansen books.  They are good.

Thurs the 21st.

Got your letter today.  No gift list!  Eddie is the only one we really need.  Andy gave me his desire; Barb & I have started shopping.  Need ideas for Dale.  Barb has ideas of her own.'

Our TV isn't working.  I'm at a loss as to what to do in its place.  Dale said I should call if it keeps "snowy".  But it could be a loose connection outside.  And I'd hate to pay to have them put it together.  If there is no TV tonite I'll be in the dog house.

When I read your letters, I think back & wonder what I could have done to get you to make the Honor Roll!!!!  I know you made it once in awhile but you could have made it every report card!  Of course they didn't have Playstation 2 back then.

We have a cloudy day & rain is suppose to start this afternoon.  When we had TV this A.M., I think I heard it was snowing in Madison.

Lar & Kim come tonite & Torey too.

Sunday, October 20, 2002

I'll start a letter earlier this week.  I read the article about families staying put in Vacherie, La.  "Fun, as young people are reared to understand it, means sitting around with relatives, drinking black coffee & telling white lies," got a chuckle from me.  Luckily they have some industry for jobs so the children can stay around.

That's great about your library being in the top 10 for your population area.  It reflects on your good work as well.

Yesterday Dale got a pocket watch -- silver in color, most likely chrome, and a Kennedy coin on the cover.  Only $10.00 at Big Lots.  The lid opens to see the time & it had a chain & fob on it.  Is that the correct term?

We went to the Mall Sat A.M. & when we got home there was a message from Warren Hollertz.  Ray & Eleanor (Youngsville) were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary & Warren said they were coming & would I like to go with them.  I said yes & it was very nice.  We stayed about 3/4 hr (started at 2) & they had to leave as Warren preaches at a small congregation in Wilcox.  Once a month they have a 5 pm Sat. service & Anna wasn't going so he had to take her home first.  They were having a pot luck after the service & that would be too much for Anna.  She is coming along fine.  For 12 weeks she goes to a session on menu, etc. followed by exercise that is monitored.  They aren't able to go as they used to & they miss it.  After the 12 weeks they'll be on the go again.  The group will come to Warren & Holiday Inn for lunch on the 25th.

I hope your back is better.  Do you take any pain killer for it?

Thanks for the recipes -- they sound interesteing.

Tues pm the 22nd.

At our potluck after the Study everyone had brought salads except for a rice pudding & salmon loaf.  Usually it is more well-rounded but theh saladsd were good.  NExt time everyone will bring a hot dish.

They are blacktopping 3rd Ave E.  We really needed it as 3rd is heavily used, esp. during when school is in session.

I made a spinach ravioli for supper.  It was good but I think it would be better if I used fresh spinach.  And I'd like to try the sausage ravioli.

It is 9:20 & Dale hasn't eaten tonite.  He came home with a headache & hasn't felt like eating.

Wed. nite the 23rd.

Barb & I had planned to go to Jamestown on Fri.  She noticed the calendar & a note:  lunch with "gang" so I'm not going to Jamestown.   I'm shortening the skirt I bought & need seam binding.  Barb will pick some up for me.  I don't really need anything I can't find in Warren.  Just nice to go.

I haven't watched too much of the World Series if there is something else I like better.  I'm still rooting for the Angels.  Barb is for San Fran.  I'm watching Restore America on HGTV.  Restoring old homes & usually they have beautiful oak woodwork & not enough closet space.

Dale is OK today & ate his dinner.  It was a bad headache & he hadn't had one that bad for quite awhile.  I never have a headache -- maybe I'm the cause of them!  But Lar get bad ones & we usually only see him once a week -- on Thurs.

Heard on the TV today -- Christmas will be here in about 2 months.  Hint! Hint!  Ideas please.

It's Fri. 8 A.M. & I'm already to get my hair done.  I'll finish this letter, listen to the Warren news, put polish on my nails & it will be time to leave.  I'll go via CVS as I need a prescription filled, get my hair done, go to the P.O. for stamps, get my medicine, & go home.  Then wash a load of towels, hope to start rolls to finish Sat. &be ready at 12:45 for Bensons to pick me up.

I'm so glad lthey caught the snipers.  What a bad time for those in the D. C. area.

Don't forget gift suggestions.  I want to get 1 gift each for the boys & send money so they can shop after Christmas sales unless you get them what they'd like.  I'm thinking clothes.

I know N. Wi. has had snow but did it ever hit  your area?

Wednesday, September 11, 2002

I'm sitting with a cup of coffee at my elbow after a busy 2 1/2 hours.  I now have a new cooky (you add chopped up Snickers) made & sampled.  Very good.  Another bar cooky waiting to be frosted, a banana cream pie for dinner (along with a chicken rice recipe they all like) & 2 1/2 doz. fresh dinner rolls.  Secret -- I made the rolls & new cooky recipe Tues. aft. & refrigerated them overnite.  Not bad for an old lady.  After a shower & getting dressed I'll be ready to take it easy.

We got our Penney's Christmas catalog last St. & you know what that means!  I prefer to send money but I like suggestions for a gift or two to open.  So -- Get busy Paul.

Wonder if you heard this on TV -- a library in Ohio is playing classical music in hopes of discouraging the youth from making the library a hangout & loitering.

Are you still getting the Warren newspaper.  Warren Hi is starting out great in football.  Barb's Dr's son plays QB & he is really good.  Also Ditka's nephew is on the team & he runs well for yardage.  David D's mom is a classmate of Barb's.  Father has a good job at United.  Warren won by good margins beating both Oil City & Meadville so far.  Those teams are usually powerhouses.

You might notice in the paper Marcia Gustafson Garrison died, age 50.  Larry's class.  After a long illness.  She was just skin & bones.  Parents:  the Don Gustafsons.  Siblings Susan G. Kiser & Don & David brothers.

The pastor in Sheffield-Ludlow parish is leaving after 4 years.  They really like him.  His wife is also a pastsor in some small nearby town.  They will be morning to Va. & both will be associate pastors in a large congregation.  Ray Forstrom will be interim pastor so he won't preach at St. Paul anymore.

I'd better get busy & get dressed so more later.

Thurs. the 12th.

Warren Hollertz called yesterday to tell me Anna had a heart attack last week.  Early A.M. hours.  She fainted & Warren wanted to call 911 but Anna said it's just the flu.  But when she couldn't sit up along for a drink of water, Warren called 911.  The EMT worked for 1 1/2 hours to stabilize Anna & then took her to Du Bois as that hospital is connected with Pittsburgh heart doctors.  She is home now -- she had the balloon method to clear a clogged artery & might have to have it again for another artery.  The end of the month she starts a heart exercise series at the hospital.  Warren leaves today for the wedding in Worcester & will be back on Sunday.  No trip to Florida but they hope to go to January.  I'm sure they are in for a changed life style.

Kim is happy with her school experience except for one 8th grade boy who is in 8th grade for the 3rd time, is 17 years old & could care less about lessons.  But he said he'll be 18 the 20th of Sept. & then he can quit school.  I'm sure the teachers won't miss him.

I finally got Dale to sign a card for Andy & mailed it this afternoon at the post office so he might not get it til Monday.  Returned 2 library books & got 2 more.

Your letter arrived today with Eddie's pictures.  They are so good & in the frame already.

The high school is really something   How nice to have the sports area they have.  You are fortunate to be in a growing area with so many activities to draw upon.  You shouldn't have any trouble being Library Director until you retire.

The train situation is something.  How could they go into debt so fast.  Poor management, I guess.

Carey's are home from Florida.  Talked a bit with Mr. C. when I came home from the P.O.  Mary Ann is doing more & feeling fine as a result of her operation.  No back pain anymore.

It's a gorgeous day -- on the cool side and a deep blue sky.  I'll take this any day over 90 heat.

Bert had to get a new portable dishwasher. Hers was leaking & it would be costly to repair.  The old was so dirty.  Sunday nite Lar & Kim plus 2 other couples are invited for Sunday nite supper.  Bert wanted Barb to come but she refused.  Like me she's doesn't like being "odd" man out!  Barb will work Saturday getting the house in order & have tomorrow A.M. off.  After I get my hair done, we'll go to Jamestown so we can be back before 3 pm when she picks Scott up from school.  He stays for lunch at school & then Barb picks him up & stays til 4:30.

I've turned 2 clocks back to E.S.T.

We had about 1/2" of snow.  But Erie & Meadville had several inches & accidents as drivers forget they have to slow down.

Last Thurs. nite I had roast chicken & today I finished the leftovers with creamed chicken.  It was good & an easy meal to fix.

Also last Thurs nite, we were trying to get ideas for Christmas & Dale said "clothes".  Can you imagine that, Dale suggesting clothes.

We also got on the subject of smoking somehow, & Dale said he doesn't smoke anymore, thus saving $25.00 a week.  Kim was really pleased to hear that.  He didn't smoke on vacation & never went back to it.  We are all pleased.

I got my Christmas Club check today.

I called Gen on Wed.  The first time I called there was no answer.  Finally got her after 9 pm.  They had been to Edith's for an anniversary dinner, a day late.  Reason, our cousin Frank Carlson died.  He was a year older than I & he had been in a nursing home for several years after a stroke.  He had never married & was an only child.

I really enjoyed reading "The Bookworm".  Read it all.  I'm going to look for Patty Jane's House of Curl by Lorna Landvik.  It sounds so good.  The team Book of the Month sound interesting.  A very interesting newsletter.

Now I'm watching the World Series.  People think it would be good for NYC to win because of  Sept 11.  But I don't think it would be good for baseball.  I'm not that interested.

Oct. 30 - Tues.

I'm so glad you sent me a copy of the Library Newsletter as I found a new author.  The library had 2 copies of Lorna Landvik's books but I took only one as I haven't been reading lately.  I got the Tall Pine Polka & I really enjoy reading it.  Patty Jane's House of Curl wasn't one of the two but I'll keep looking until I find it.  Enjoy the Scandinavian background.  It's fun reading.

Sheila & Sue make a lot of Halloween & dress up.  They will be coming by tomorrow so I have to have some cookies for them.  And our choc. chips are soon gone so this aft. I'll bake.  They take the day off & have a lot of fun.  Sue is also a beautician at J.C.H.  She graduated with Dale.

I clean upstairs (my room & bathroom) Tues. A.M. & later in the aft. we get groceries.  A busy day.  Not much time to read but I got some reading in at breakfast.  Dale just left -- late week -- & I'm ready for a shower.

Upstairs is finished & I'll finish this & mail it when I go over to CVS.  Reason:  Yesterday I had my blood pressure checked.  I saw the Dr. in Sept. & it was higher than usual so the check.  It was still high.  The nurse called this A.M. & I'm to get new pills for a month to see how they work.  So I won't send for them.  In 2 weeks I have to have a blood test & then in another 2 weeks I have to have my b. pressure checked again.  The end of Dec. will be my regular appt. with the Dr.   Now I go every 3 months. Guess he wants me to live 'til 90!

So I'd better get my cookies going as after lunch I'll go to CVS.  Fix a bigger lunch for Dale as this is the Tues. he works til 8.  Usually pancakes or waffles or Fr. Toast & eggs & sausage.  So I spoil him but he is a good guy to have around.  He sees little things to do without being asked so it work both ways.

Be on the lookout for your birthday present.  Barb will mail it tomorrow.  (It's in the mail.)

And I haven't heard any suggestions for Christmas giving.  And Eddie's birthday.  I could buy part of the boy's gifts & if clothing is wanted, would you shop for me again, Paul.  That way Andy will get what he wants.

Today at church was our session with a layman representing the Synod.  Patty Phillips is busy taking care of the getting of pastors to preach.  So Beth Darling took care of the ballot & they had 10 willing people.  That was a big job.  I thought they might have to get all the people "from the floor" & it would take time.  These are all willing people so that is a good start.  But he warned us it won't happen tomorrow.  Some churches have been without a pastor for 3 years.   He complimented us on our church building & said that would be a good point. I feel a lot better now.  It will come but we'll need patience.

Dale had to go to school again.  He'll leave about 5 pm & will be gone Mon & Tues, coming home between 6-7 pm.  At least it's nice weather for travel.

Dale should be in the motel.  After he left, and the dishes were cleared up, etc., I decided to do some baking.  Set my Danish rolls to finish tomorrow.  Dale always takes a snack so he got the last of the choc. chip so I made choc. chips & molasses crinkle. When all was cleaned up, I sampled my cookies with a cup of fresh coffee.  Barb just went upstairs with a cup of tea and cookies.

I'm waiting for baseball to come on .  The Ariz.-Braves game should be a good one.

Did you shed tears over Sat. Wisc. loss & Green Bay's loss today.  We always think of all of you when we see those teams play.  Other times as well!

It's funny both the N.L. & A.L. teams are playing at the same time.  I have the Braves game on, but will switch during commercials to see how the Mariners are doing!

Mon. the 22nd.

Lar came over with Torey -- Lar raked leaves at Carey's & Torey was with me.  Lar closed a door at Crary's on Torey's tail & Torey spent some time at the vet's office.  It wasn't covered & Torey wags his tail a lot so it started to bleed so they took him back to the vet who wrapped it.  He had to have antibiotics and all.  He couldn't have anything to eat & he didn't eve beg for food.  I asked Lar what Kim said & she wasn't too  happy.  Accidents will happen.

Last nite I stayed up until 11:15 to see the final out that beat the Braves.   Andy was disappointed, but Grandma was happy!  I won't watch much of the Seattle-Yankees game as I'm tired.

Your lamps sound nice.  You didn't have far to go to find them.  I take it the house has been sold so there will be more new neighbors.

I'll call Ed & Gen tomorrow to wish them a Happy Anniversary and to see how Ed is doing.

It's Wed already so I must finish this.

It is 9:15 A.M. & Barb isn't up.  I wash the kitchen floor this A.M. but first I must vacuum the rugs & floor.  I did get the garbage all set for tomorrow's pick up.

Last nite, in bed, as I was reviewing the day, I remembered I forgot to call Gen.  You'll probably celebrate your birthday on Sun. so I plan to call to wish Paul Happy Birthday.  That is, if I don't forget!

Last nite we had ribs cooked in the crockpot & they were very good.  I probably could have been a little more generous with the sauce.  Next time I'll know.

We've had a lot of rain so I hope to get this mailed between the showers.

Dale got back about 6:45 pm & said it was a good session.  On the elec. systems & Dale said no one realizes how complicated it is.  He drove home in the rain.  Something is missing when he's gone.

I hear Barb is up so I'll finish this & get back to work.

Saturday, September 22, 2001

Yesterday aft. on our way to the Mall, I noticed a new batch of corn on the cob coming in.  On our way home we stopped to pick up a baker's dozen.  It was so good. Will have more today with steaks.

Don't think I mentioned this (sometimes in my mind I think of what to write you) but I didn't know what to make for supper on nite.  Settled on a casserole using ground beef, veggies, kidney beans & noodles. It was good.  The next day for lunch I added bouillon to it & made it soup & it also was tasty.  Think I'll use it for soup by adding more bouillon.  I've heard of hamburger soup but never made it.  Dale liked it.

Did you happen to watch the Mets/Braves game in NYC.  The opening was inspirational.  Good rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.  During the 7th inning stretch & Liza Minnelli sang New York, New York with 5 firemen or policemen behind her.  She was so good & the men were doing a little side step.  Almost a full stadium & Mike Piazza won the game with a home run.  The Major was there & a lot of police & fire people were at the game as guests.  And the Mets gave up a day's pay to go to the Police & Firemen's fund.  It was really a great thing, not only for Met fans but for all people.

Wonder what the Yankees will do to top this, when they play again in NYC.

I got Andy's thank you note.  It sounds like he had a good day.

Which brings to mind Christmas.  And that means suggestions.  Money or ideas for gifts.  Please think about it as Barb & I like to get going early on this.  Pretty Please!

About 6 years ago -- longer than that, an older woman asked Kim to be her power of attorney.  Kim agreed to help.  Last week this person called Kim & wanted help.  She has an apt. at the Towers.  When Kim saw her she understood.  The woman has a bad heart & needs oxygen handy.  The she got worse, was in the hosp. & then Central Nursing Home.  She doesn't have much money so had to go on assistance but first there are many questions to be answered & Kim was called.  When she works she can't make day appointments to see people.  Kim didn't even have a key to get the necessary papers, etc.  But the social worker for Beverly, Inc. is a great help & will take care of the questionnaire, etc.  But Kim was upset so I guess it isn't always easy to be nice & help people.  The woman has a daughter in Fla & she could care less. They don't' get along.

Sun the 23rd.

The pastor wasn't in church this A.M. & we wonder why.  A retired pastor from Jamestown had the service.  He's a former Augustana Synod, & those pastors know how to preach so we receive something.

It's a lovely day & Barb is riding her bike.  A rainy, cooler week is predicted.

I'm including a cartoon that fits me to a "T".  So hard to give up those coffee breaks, plus.

Buffalo just got an interception & got a TD, thanks to Peyton Manning.  I'm sure they don't have a chance for a win.  Like Penn State yesterday.  And Coach Paterno wants his 100th win.  You were happy Wisc. won.

And what about those Mets, amazing, aren't they?

Much to my dismay, the Mets aren't on TV today.  It's been a great series with all that has happned in NYC.  "You gotta believe".

Remember Sandy Casey, your age.  Her son, in his early 20s, lost one testicle & the cancer spread to spots on his lung.  Now the other testicle has to be removed & then chemo or is it Kemo.  Right now his blood count is too low for an operation.  He has a baby around a year or so.  Not married & it sounds like the gal left & he has the child.  Betty Casey is the grandmother & we sit together in church.

Tues. A.M. the 25th.

Next letter will have an Oct. date.  Hard to believe.

Fri. Dale has to go to school for the day.  Next week he goes for 2 days.

Better get this ready for mailing.  All is well here.

Saturday, September 2, 2000

School started & hot, humid weather decided to return.  I've used the A.C. several times to keep the house cooler.  Things have started OK for Kim.  At least she doesn't have lunch room duty this year.

Received an invitation to Anna & Warren's 50th Wedding anniv. the end of Sept.  No one is going from this area so I won't be able to attend.  It will be at the Country Club but I'll send a card & look for a gift.

I did laugh when I read that paragraph about "now he knows what it's like to have children".  In fact I just read it again & laughed again.  You know they say laughter is good for a person.  No one said it was easy but it's the most wonderful experience ever.

Penn State "stinks" this year.  Barb is watching the game but I'm watching "Murder She Wrote" on A&E.  Barb thinks they should bench R. Casey & use the red shirt freshman who was in on a couple of plays in the first game & was good.

Read about the "shoe situation" of U. of Wisc.  But Wisc. still won minus the players who had to sit out.  Hope they'll continue to do OK.

Dale went to the care junkyard this aft.  The heat doesn't bother him.  He also loves to go to Don Gage & look over the variety of merchandise.

He got a pair of shoe stretchers made of cedar wood & they have a nice aroma to them.  Keeps his shoes smelling good.  The ones he wears a few times a year when he dresses up.  Shoes he inherited from Dad.

In St. Louis temp is suppose to reach 100 & the Mets play S.L. in an aft. game.  More fun.  It's not on TV.  They couldn't make it 1/2 ahead of the Braves when both teams lost.  It is exciting.

We finally had a thunder shower.  The grass has turned brown in spots & rain was needed.

I'm reading another author new to me -- Guilty as Sin by Tami Hoag.  Setting in Minn.  Another one by Patricia Cornwell, Point of Origin.  Noticed she has another one coming out soon.

Dale just came home -- he didn't get wet but it did rain there.  He was able to get what he was looking for.  A manifold for read end of car & in good condition.

It's funny how you forget your "problems" with your children growing up.  I know you 4 were no angels but I also know, in spite of everything, you are good, upstanding sons & daughter.  You have made me very happy as a mother & I know teenage years are hard -- learning to grow up, etc., but this, too, shall pass & become a distant, cloudy memory.  It's just a stage both parents & children have to go thru, & it's hard for both sides.  That's my sermon for this time!!!

It's Sun Sept 3rd & it's Mets time on TV.  I'm almost finished reading Pat. Cornwell's book & it's so good.

It's beautiful this aft. 2 pm.  Less humid.  It was still warm in church this A.M.

This summer Mr. Bonace has done a lot of walking but he started in walking the bike path all the way twice a day.  He ended up with leg splints.  He was really crippled for awhile & had to go to the Dr.   He started walking too far.  So we haven't seen him walking for awhile.

That was a nice compliment the mayor gave you, Paul.  Of course, I agree with him.

I have Andy's birthday gift & will soon get it on its way -- to the library.

Soon I'll start thinking of Christmas & suggestions for gifts.  So get your thinking cap on!  You know I like to start early.

Labor Day.

Larry came over this A.M. with his jack hammer & took out the "bump" in the entry to the driveway on 3rd.  (Hard to explain.)  Then Dale cleaned it up & put on black top patch & tamped it down. Easier to drive in & back out now.  The first step in the driveway changeover.  Now Dale is cleaning out the eaves by the front porch.  When it rains, it overflows so Dale is trying to fix it.  Also needed to cut a branch off the tree.

Kim stopped over, for a short visit, with Torey.

Mets are losing for the 4th time in a row.  But then the Braves are losing games as well.  Not many games left.

Green Bay comes to Buffalo.  Buff. played a great game last nite winning the game.  Full house -- 75,000 people.  Fun to watch.

"Boxer" by Eddie

Just finished putting a puzzle together - 1000 pieces & everyone was there.  Some pieces were missing & because of the rug, they are hard to spot.  I get down on my hands & knees & feel around & find the missing pieces.  If I don't do that the vacuum cleaner "eats" them never to be found again.

Thanks for your flowers.  They are very beautiful.  I have another bouquet - altar flowers.  Carole Anderson always has them on this Sun. in memory of her parents.  And she thought so much of Dad that he always got one of the bouquets.  He would visit them, etc.  Visitation means so much to members & that is what they remember Dad for - one of the things.  Now I got the flowers this year.

Tonite (6 pm reservation) we go out to eat at "Bones & Ribs", in area opposite Jackson Valley Country Club & golf course.  It burned down but was rebuilt.  I has had other names as well & owners.  Suppose to be pre3tty good - time will tell.

In my bedroom we have a heart theme as the quilt has hearts on it & so does the border by the ceiling.  So we tho't a heart shaped wreath would look nice on one wall.  Kim decorated one & gave it to me & it does look so nice.  Barb & Dale gave me Betty Dixon chocolates &^ a candle, votive type, that fits into a black wired heart.  The candle holder part is a heavy glass "thing" you used to see on elec. poles.  Dale told me the correct word but I can't call it to mind.  You'll see it sometime.

We're going to have a real tree again this Christmas.  This aft. Kim & Lar were going to choose trees.  Mark them for cutting in Dec.

Paula Carey - don't know her married name - starts a new job Nov. 1 in Buffalo.  S he has been working for Northwest Savings in the mortgage dept.  The new job means more money.  Her husband is a lawyer & had to get a Pa. law license & now he's not sure what he will do.  Paula will stay up there & come home weekends.  They haven't been here that long.

Mon. the 18th

We left at 5:45 for Ribs & Bones & had a very good dinner.  I got the 1/3 portion of ribs, Lar the 1/2 portion & Dale got steak & ribs.  If you eat a regular portion of ribs they gift you a baseball type cap.  So the portions are generous.

When we left the Mets-Braves were tied at 2.  When we got home it was the 9th inning & still tied so I didn't miss that much.  It was so exciting, as you can testify to.  When the phone rang I knew it was a call from Middleton only this time it was Eddie.  He carries on a good conversation.

Now to football - did you notice the Penn State Q.B.'s name is Richard (pronounced with the French accent) Kelly.  Their up & coming Q.B.

Got my tooth fixed today.  Then we went to the mall.  On the way back to the car, we noticed a couple looking at the van.  When they realized it was our car they spoke & said the van was in such good condition.  Told him we bo't it new & it was a '91 with less than 30,000 miles.  They really tho't it looked newer.  They were from Eastern Pa. & had a Scotty puppy who was so cute.  The man was so friendly, just like Warren Hollertz.

Christmas club checks will be coming soon & so far I've had just 1 suggestion from you people.  More please!  Remember I shop early.

I washed my winter jacket & somehow lost the "thing" that works the zipper & don't know where to find or look for it.  Barb has a nice jacket she doesn't like because it has a couple of tiny spots on it.  I'll look for some solvent to see if they'll come out & then wash it.  It has a zip-in lining.  I like it & a little spot won't bother me.  You can hardly see it.  Sometimes I get going too fast & end up with too many loops.

I had a nice birthday, thanks to my children.  I don't feel like 79.  I don't think I told you this or maybe I did as your letter was late.  He wished his Dad was as active as I.  Oh yes, I mentioned on the phone.  You'll have to excuse me - I'm a year from 80!

Got another puzzle to put together.  But I wanted to finish this & get it off tomorrow when I mail Gen & Ed's anniv. card.
