Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

The Mets came on at 8 pm & they are at St. Louis. I washed my face, etc. so I can stay up until 10:30 & then go to bed.
I'm enclosing Chiodo's menu. We really enjoyed our dinners. Barb especially. It was a special for Mother's Day he doesn't have on the menu very often. Usually she has some complaint about the food. Not this time. Dale & I had sandwiches with my pork leftover -- huge servings -- & it was good. Dale really liked it. He said his ribs had a "woodsy" taste he didn't like that much. Kim tasted Lar's & really like it & she's not a big meat eater. We were all satisfied -- except. There was a Pentecostal group having dinner & they had a 20 min or so musical presentation, guitar, elec. which they didn't need in a small area. It was hard to talk above the music. Then they had testimonies abut how hey came to fat. They should have chosen a private dining area or had it catered. I'm surprised they chose a place that serves alcohol but things can't be perfect.
Am also enclosing a picture of the '56 flood. Barb tho't you'd be interested in seeing it. Someone must have given it to Dad. Before the dam was built.
Called Millie last nite -- she is not I ha flooded area just a lot of rain.
Linda is in Chicago this week. (I didn't realize he retired 3 years ago.) Last Sun A.M. when she got back from breakfast there was a note saying call your neighbor. She couldn't imagine why. She found out 6 cars in her neighborhood sitting in the driveways were damaged -- windows broken, scratches, etc. She has a garage but doesn't use it in the summer. Bet she wishes she did now. It will be repaired.
Noticed in the USA Today state news that your ex friend Chuck Chvala now has "home detention as part of his 9 month sentence". It is a sad situation.
My puzzle is slowly coming together. I like this one & will finish it. Might take 2-3 weeks but who is in a rush.
Dale gave me an impatiens hanging plant & yours & his are on the front of the porch facing n. yard & then decided on the porch facing E. Hope I have my directions straight. The flowers look so nice.
You asked if I could find the church & parsonage on the G. F. map you sent. I'm not sure I can.
Fri. Just got back from getting my hair done.
Barb said Scott showed her some porn pictures & a bad poem he got on his computer. She told Lynn & when Lynn confronted him he showed a stick figure instead of the real thing. So Barb had a talk with Scott & he got rid of the porn. He is smart enough to find that but not smart when it comes to studying. He doesn't want to be a nerd. Crazy kids. Scott can't keep things to himself (which is good) & tells Barb instead of his parents. He doesn't want to get yelled at.
Mets vs. Yankees at Shea this weekend. Hope the Mets hitters show up for these games. All are on TV. N.Y., Fox, & ESPN.
All is well.

This A.M. I was musing should I go to church. My back is bothering me & tomorrow I'll have to call the chiropractor for an appt. Getting up out of a chair hurts. But the decision was made for me. Marie Mathis called & said there is no heat at church. It is a pretty new furnace so it shouldn't act up but it does. So I'm sitting with the heating pad on my back.
Your packages -- 2 -- are about ready to send to you. They'll come UPS.
We didn't go to the Mall on Black Fri. but we went on Sat. & we didn't have to wait in line to pay for our purchases. Only in K Mart did we wait. All 4 or 5 registers were opened with waiting customers.
All Barb's gifts are wrapped but not mine. I'll get busy when my back feels better. Think I was lazy & carried in more groceries than I should have. After that my back started in.
Both Barb & I sent cards to Pete & Sylvia Yosten. Barb also wrote a letter. She read it to me & got emotional reading it. She & Max were good friends in high school but drifted apart as they went their separate ways. Max is the reason Barb joined the Navy. One nite Max & some girls were going to Jamestown & Max told Barb there wasn't room for her. The next day she went & joined up. And after that Max decided to join the Army. Barb told me that.
Tues. evening
Dale put the tree up on Sun. Mon. Barb brought the decorations from the attic & I started to decorate the tree. Barb put on the finishing touches & we have a lovely looking tree. Barb's pkg are under the tree. I still have to wrap my gifts. We've also put decorations around the house. Next I'll start in on Christmas cards -- glad my list gets smaller each year.
I'll enclose a check. The boys want money for the Xbox so there will be 75.00 for each of you -- 1 $300.00 check. As long as I'm able each one gets 100.00 spent on them.
Called Lar & Kim late this aft. to see how Torey is doing. It was a long Mon. for them & Torey is doing fine. Has a covering on the ear that he doesn't like & Lar & Kim didn't get much sleep last nite. Torey does have an enlarged heart.
Dale saw the Dr. in Erie today. We had a lot of rain & he said the Blazer drove really well.
Enjoyed reading your letter. I'm so glad I'm not having babies today. Suppose because of being sued so much goes on today. IV's, tracking the heart, etc. When Lar was born it was only the Dr. & me. No nurse & afterwards he wheeled me to call Dad & tell him he had another son. I was very lucky -- my deliveries were fast.
You could "read" when you were very young. You could tell the name of each record & we never knew how you recognized them. We expected a lot form you. We didn't see it in high school. But moving to Wi. was the right move & you have fulfilled your capabilities. Better late than never.
I think First. Eng. in Gt. Falls bought the houses nearly the church. Seems like I heard that.
Had a greeting from the pastor & wife who followed us in G.F. He became a prof. at Augustana. Now retired they lived in Arizona. They decided to relocate to Seattle area as they have a son there. They sold their home in 1 day. Now living in an apt. on Bainbridge Island. Dad's classmate Gordon Loren was pastor in Bainbridge Island. We saw a lot of them when we were In Auburn.
Gene & Gladys Hasselquist were good friends. They ended up in Minnesota. Now retired. Gladys died a couple of years ago. Also their son died. Gene is still active & winters in Texas. He could be a great grandpa by now.
Fri A.M. Dec. 2
It is snowing & adding up. We were going to the Mall after I got my hair done but changed our minds. Will go Sat. A.M.
Torey is OK, but Kim is a concerned "Mom". Torey has taken to sleeping with them again & Kim gets squeezed out of bed. Wed. nite she needed up on the floor.
I have to make 2 pies for church. Finally decided to make a butterscotch meringue pie & maybe a strawberry pie. Or a graham cracker pie with a vanilla filling meringue on top.
Yesterday I made Spritz & a sugar cooky. I'll freeze some so they won't get stale. If I want a cooky to go with coffee, I take one or 2 our of the freezer & put in the microwave & they are good. I still haven to make rolls for Dale but only 2 batches. If they have it on Fri baking them will be a problem as I can't miss my hair appt. That always comes first. I'll just have to get up early.
Barb & Lynn must be "sounding boards" for each other. Lynn will tell Barb something & say "don't tell anyone!" But Barb tells me as she can't keep it a secret. And who would I tell so the secret is safe.
I didn't go to the Dr. for my back & I'm paying the price. It is better but not healed. Maybe I'll end up going next week. It doesn't bother my sleeping. Mostly getting up & down to sit.
Sheila knows the people who bo't Frank's house. They've painted all the walls & woodwork, as they were maroon & blue. Even the kitchen cupboards. They would have had to do all of it twice. The husband is anxious to move in as they are living with her parents. It will be tough to move in the snow. It will be nice to see lights there.
Dale is working on the outside Christmas lights. Some are out & he had trouble finding the bad ones. He finally worked out a system, bot' more lights & will soon have it ready to go.

Paul had a -- where's my head. I mean Barb had a nice birthday. Dale gave Barb money, Lar & Kim gave her a gift card to Walden Books & they both also had little gifts. I gave her a swim suit from L. L. Bean. The blueberry pie was delicious. PLan to make another one for this weekend.
Barb heard a noise in the car she didn't like. It turned out to be the sway bar which Dale fixed. If it had been done at the shop it could cost around $150.00. Lucky me to have Dale to fix things.
In Jan. I saw the Dr. & he wanted me to have some blood tests. The office called & said he wanted me to have another one in 2 months. So I had one & the office called again & wanted to change my meds. I take 2 pills instead of one. It is my thyroid acting up. Maybe that's why I lost some weight. Now I'll have to be careful so I won't gain weight. It was affecting me in small ways & already I feel better.
Last Fri we went to Jamestown - -Bon Ton had a sale & both Barb & I found tops we liked & bot. This Fri we are going to Erie (no school) & maybe we'll have more success. (Enclosed cartoon.)
Good for JoAnna making a speech. That brings back memories. In Great Falls I took a public speaking course at the Y.W. It was fun. We had to give speeches & then be graded by the group. There were good things bout Gt. Falls. 2 children born there.
What is taught in the student enrichment time?
Both boys did well in their grades.
Barb recommends the movie "Band of Angels", a movie she got at the library. Clark Gable & Yvonne De Carlo & it is a Civil War movie. She really enjoyed it. She bo't a D.V.D, V.C.R. as the old V.C.R. wasn't that good. In putting it in place she hfound the remote for the L.R. TV.
Jessie Franberry who sits with us in church -- I've mentioned her before -- was upset last Sun. as they won't let her drive anymore because of her medication. She is heartbroken but that day comes for everyone. Then we were told the organ needs repairs to the tune of $3500.00 W'll have a congregational mtg. in May to decide. We finally have a talented organist so I hope it can get done. I'm willing to give toward it.
We didn't get snow last weekend but it was cold. 40's. Showers thru the wee & the grass is so green & needs mowing. This is Dale's late Tues. & the weather is nice. Maybe toward the end of the week he can now.
Sun. nite I watched Oakland at the L.A. Angels. If I was an A.L. fan I'd be for the Angels. They won 1-0.
Last nite the Braves were at the Mets. Mets won but it was dicey until the last out. 5-4 Mets. Tye are much improved & finally have a new 1st baseman whose name I find hard to remember. This is how I do it, can't spell his name either. Mc-Tave-itch. That is what it sounds like when the announcers say it. Mientkiewicz. He is a good first basement.
Thurs A.M. the 28th
I'm taking a coffee break. Most of my Thurs chores are done. Made a spice cake for dessert & it smells so good. We're having pork & applesauce. Will make a corn pudding for a veggie.
Tues nite Dale got home a little after 8 pm & it was still a little light left so Dale mowed the lawn. We have had so many "showery" days it is hard for Dale to find a dry spell. Good we don't have much to mow.
Barb borrowed a video catalog from Lynn. She found movies she'd like to order but they aren't available anymore. Her first choice "Band of Angels". Lynn said maybe it is available on the internet. She found it & it cost $70.00! Barb said to get it & take it out of her pay. She ordered a set of "Bonanza" but returned them as they were so bad. Hard to look at.
Break time is over -- must clean the sink in the laundry room.
Every year the Kiwanis sponsors a blood testing clinic at Beaty. Kim & Lar go every other year. Lar hates needles & the one he got had trouble taking the blood. Kim said Larry got green & just about passed out. This happens every time he has to have a blood test.
Kim & her girlfriends are going to the Indian Casino tomorrow. It's a snow day. Everyone talks about the food there, that it is wonderful. I said we should go up there when Dale is on vacation. He said eh would. It would be fun to see it & maybe spend a few quarters & then have dinner. I think it would be fun.
