Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

The Mets came on at 8 pm & they are at St. Louis. I washed my face, etc. so I can stay up until 10:30 & then go to bed.
I'm enclosing Chiodo's menu. We really enjoyed our dinners. Barb especially. It was a special for Mother's Day he doesn't have on the menu very often. Usually she has some complaint about the food. Not this time. Dale & I had sandwiches with my pork leftover -- huge servings -- & it was good. Dale really liked it. He said his ribs had a "woodsy" taste he didn't like that much. Kim tasted Lar's & really like it & she's not a big meat eater. We were all satisfied -- except. There was a Pentecostal group having dinner & they had a 20 min or so musical presentation, guitar, elec. which they didn't need in a small area. It was hard to talk above the music. Then they had testimonies abut how hey came to fat. They should have chosen a private dining area or had it catered. I'm surprised they chose a place that serves alcohol but things can't be perfect.
Am also enclosing a picture of the '56 flood. Barb tho't you'd be interested in seeing it. Someone must have given it to Dad. Before the dam was built.
Called Millie last nite -- she is not I ha flooded area just a lot of rain.
Linda is in Chicago this week. (I didn't realize he retired 3 years ago.) Last Sun A.M. when she got back from breakfast there was a note saying call your neighbor. She couldn't imagine why. She found out 6 cars in her neighborhood sitting in the driveways were damaged -- windows broken, scratches, etc. She has a garage but doesn't use it in the summer. Bet she wishes she did now. It will be repaired.
Noticed in the USA Today state news that your ex friend Chuck Chvala now has "home detention as part of his 9 month sentence". It is a sad situation.
My puzzle is slowly coming together. I like this one & will finish it. Might take 2-3 weeks but who is in a rush.
Dale gave me an impatiens hanging plant & yours & his are on the front of the porch facing n. yard & then decided on the porch facing E. Hope I have my directions straight. The flowers look so nice.
You asked if I could find the church & parsonage on the G. F. map you sent. I'm not sure I can.
Fri. Just got back from getting my hair done.
Barb said Scott showed her some porn pictures & a bad poem he got on his computer. She told Lynn & when Lynn confronted him he showed a stick figure instead of the real thing. So Barb had a talk with Scott & he got rid of the porn. He is smart enough to find that but not smart when it comes to studying. He doesn't want to be a nerd. Crazy kids. Scott can't keep things to himself (which is good) & tells Barb instead of his parents. He doesn't want to get yelled at.
Mets vs. Yankees at Shea this weekend. Hope the Mets hitters show up for these games. All are on TV. N.Y., Fox, & ESPN.
All is well.

First of all -- be on the lookout for a pkg. from Barb. She mailed it this A.M. third class. I'm not ready yet but hope to get it mailed by the end of the week of the 26th. It might be the 1st week of Dec. Before the lines get too long at the P.O.
We had a nice Thanksgiving. I roast my turkey in an oven bag & it comes out nice.
Thanksgiving came too fast for me. I usually send cards to my sisters & sisters-in-law as well as the boys. Millie sent me a card & that woke me up but it was too late. Hope the boys got their notes today. Tues. nite I called Millie to wish her a Happy Thanksgiving. Linda comes home & they go to Allan's for dinner. Linda needed a new car & got a Toyota Highland. Off the floor but the color wasn't her choice but she needed it immediately. Her old one was 10 yrs old & needed work. A red color.
Talked to Gen yesterday -- she had Thanksgiving at her house. Just 4 of them -- John & Edith. It's a big job for Gen to make a meal so the others wanted to go out to eat but Gen wanted leftovers. She just had a turkey breast.
I packed a lunch for Dale today because of the parking situation. But he came home at noon to get his T.V. from our garage so they could watch the last NASCAR race in N.H. It was postponed because of 9-11-01. In 10 weeks they're back to racing in Fla. Dale said parking wasn't that bad.
Wed. nite the 3 Luth. churches have a Thanksgiving service & it was our turn to be host. Janice Carlson called & volunteered to pick me up. They serve pie & coffee after the service so she had to be there at 6 pm. The service was at 7. I said I'd walk over & she could take me home. I hadn't planned to go. But my conscience got the best of me & I went. And I was glad I did. It was a fine service & I enjoyed the fellowship over coffee.
We didn't go to the Mall today. Barb wasn't interested. But we did go to Home & Garden as I saw a couple of things in their flyer that I wanted.
I noticed in the state news in USA Today that Wi. governor's race will spend the most money in history of that office. True or false. I always read the notes on Mass, Conn, Mont, Pa. Wa, & Wi. States I've lived in or you live in.
Tonite we'll have leftovers for supper & tomorrow I'll make turkey soup.
Sat aft. the 24th
It looks like Wi is going to lose against Minn.
This A.M. we went to the Mall & got more of our shopping done. But when I look at my list, there seems to be something I forgot to think about. Mon we're going to Jamestown (1st day of deer hunting, no school & Barb will be home) & I hope to be finished. I haven't done any wrapping yet. The pkg. must be in Wi. for Dec. 6th!
Temperatures are still in the 50's. Hard to imagine wearing a spring jacket in Nov. Last year the boys went sled riding at Beaty & it was cold.
I have my turkey soup ready for supper. And leftover pie from Thanksgiving. And Bond Ost cheese. The broth is in the fridge cooling so I can skim off the fat.
Sun the 25th
Last nite Barb & I played 3 games of Scrabble & she won 2 of them. The 2nd game I won only because Barb gave me a broad hint so I could win. But it's fun to play. I did stump her on a word DUENNA. I remember that from novels I've read.
This A.M. in church we heard that we have an interim pastor. A retired man from Erie. From a book Dad had, I noticed h was in Phila. He will come at least 1 day during the week for calls & confirmation classes. He will only preach 2 Sun. a month. I wish it would be every Sun. so there is more continuity. Also we have an "angel tree" at church with names of needy children sponsored by the Salvation Army. I was lucky to find a 2 year old with suggestions & sizes for clothes & he'd like a monster truck or a teddy bear. I'll start looking as the gifts must be at church by Dec. 9. They gave us 5 names & they were going fast. I don't know if it's just me, but I think there is a bitter feeling at church. And if it takes awhile to get a pastor, we don't have his salary to pay & should build up a little extra money. They had to have someone look at the furnace. A&B Heating did it & they also signed an agreement for a twice a year check. It started to leak around the steeple & that got fixed thanks to Ron Passinger who got someone to fix it. Guess they used foam to seal it. So things are getting done. These projects needed attention & usually it depends upon the pastor to push. This week I have to get my blood pressure checked. I walk home & I'll stop at the bank & cash a check for Dec. expenses. I have envelopes for food, hair, church, birthday,s etc. I have a apge for each month & make out a list to find how much I'll need.
This coming Fri. I go out to lunch with pastor friends. We're going to the hotel in Pittsfield, now the Acock Inn & the food is good.
Above I left out money for me to spend!
Want to gete this mailed on Mon. Want to get going on Christmas notes.
I love to make plans so I can start thinking about your March visit.

I just called & got motel reservations in the Iron Mt. Motel 8. Got the combination numbers for 2 rooms.
Your kitchen plans sound wonderful./ Lots of cupboard space. Bet you can hardly wait for them to get started. But you will need the time to take out the cupboards, etc. Will be fund to see it in July.
It doesn't seem to want to stop snowing. We haven't had a lot this past week -- after the 6" we got -- but flurries each day. Today it 's been strange, cloudy, flurries, & then sunshine but it doesn't last.
We know what is going into the former CVS & KB toy store at the Mall -- a Dollar Store. Already there is one in the Market St. Plaza -- opposite BiLo. Kim goes in there & finds bargains so I hope it will work at the Mall. They have a sign in the window (Mall) concerning hiring. One down & several to go.
I didn't get any library books on Fri. I decided I couldn't spend the weekend reading. In the Apr. 3 Family Circle there is an article on bumper stickers & one caught my eye -- from Appleton, Wi. "Librarians are novel lovers." Another one I saw was cute. "I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go."
Did you notice Penn State beat Mich. State in the Big Ten tournament. Go Penn State!!!
Got a letter from Millie & she said Gen broke 1 or 2 vertabrae when she fell. She went to emergency room Mon A.M. The Dr. gave her pain medicine & she is in a lot of pain. Can't do anything so Ed has the responsibility of meal, etc. She sleeps a lot. Larry said they should get 2 way radios & contact Ed that way.
Millie wrote Linda was home for 5 days & they went shopping. Millie got a new wreath for her front door. She has a little storage shed & the window box she had for it was broken. She got a new one to be put up if spring ever comes. She had 3 boys shovel for her. Lots of drifting snow.
The Warren Co. teachers finally got their new contract after waiting 8 months. They didn't get everything they wanted but some of the things that were important were given them. Kim was happy. Lar has the bedroom floor half done. They get Fri thru Mon, the 16-19 off so Kim hopes it will be done so she could start cleaning -- dust, etc. Then the house is completed. He's talking garage. Thinks he could do it himself, with Dale's help. And he'd like to get cement siding as the squirrels are gnawing on their siding. He'd do the job himself.
Sun. aft the 11th
We had snow this A.M. & it came down fast. Bet we got 3 inches. It's clear now -- 1:45 pm.
All our 3 TVs have NASCAR racing. Barb upstairs, Dale in the kitchen. I'm in the L.R. During the 3rd lap, 700 balloons were released in memory of D. Earnhardt & everyone saluted with 3 fingers in the air. The one who is driving in place of D. E. is doing very well. He's just a young one starting out & didn't figure to race NASCAR this early in his career.
Don't laugh, but I've already started making a lit of what I'll need to bring on the trip. I like to make lists.
Supper is over & the kitchen is cleaned up.
The end of the race was so exciting. Kevin Harvick who now races D. E. car with a different number, 29, beat Jeff Gordon by 1/1000 of a second. You should have heard the cheering & seen the #3 flags waving in the grandstands. This is only his 3rd Nascar race & he won. He wasn't suppose to NASCAR race until next spring & then ease into it gradually. What a thrill for him. Guess you'd say we're into racing as much as ever.
Penn State didn't do so good in their 2nd game. Guess winning over Mich . State wore them out.
You're probably watching the college playoff of basketball games. I'm not into basketball, except if Penn State is winning & I want to see if they win the game.
Tues. Mar. 13th. My room & the bathroom are cleaned & towels are washing. Put Swiss steak in the cork pot & it smells good. We get groceries today so it will be nice to have dinner cooking. It's raining her e-- more showers. Love to all.
