It's a beautiful day -- it started cooling off Fri. aft.

Fri aft. Barb started cleaning her bedroom & finished this A.M. Then she went for a bike ride & afterwards started cleaning the east & south sides of the house -- just the bottom part.  Then she cleaned the porch.  There was a lot of dust from the roofing job which they finished on Thurs.  It looks so nice.  Expensive but worth it.

Dale starts a weeks vacation today.

This A.M. I made Babe Ruth Bars from your library's first cookbook.  They are tasty. Planning a quiche for supper & might make choc. chip cookies.  Should have made them this A.M., but didn't realize Barb wanted them.

Was watching Boston vs. Seattle play baseball in Boston.  Then I switched to golf which is very interesting because it's only the best players in this tournament.  They make mistakes, too.  And again Tiger isn't playing his best game.

7:30 p.m.  I'm watching Pittsburgh at Milwaukee   It looks like a good crowd at the new ballpark.  Have you seen any games (yet) this season?  You usually write about it if you do.

I made choc. chip cookies so all are happy.  Made a broccoli quiche & it came out good.

The Pittsburgh announcers are saying there is a new attitude among the Braves & they beat the Pirates because they are better!

The Mets are at L.A. & were on TV last nite starting at 10 pm.  Same tonite.  I watched 2 1/2 innings & couldn't keep my eyes opened any longer.  It will be the same tonite.

A lady was having her hair done next to Sheila's booth & I mentioned having a bat in my house.  She told about her experience.  She woke up in the A.M. to find pictures off the wall, lampshades askew, etc.  She figured a rabid bat got in bumping into everything.  She gave up smoking but keeps a carton in the freezer.  She got a pack of cigarettes, went outside & smoked 2 cigarettes -- called a friend to come -- smoked 2 cigarettes.  The friend said -- "they like water, go check the toilet".  She did & there is was, the wings spread out. She flushed the toilet, but the lid down, rushed out & smoked 2 more cigarettes.  Her friend said "did it go down when you flushed." She didn't know so went back in to check.  It had.  She is so funny, it was fun to hear her explain it.  I think she is a widow.  She is very unhappy because Marilyn, her beautician, is retiring.  She is 66 & her husband is retired.

Kim & Larry are having company at camp tonite.  It is her friend Nancy's 50th birthday so Nancy & Dr. Jay will be there; Mike Brindis who will also be 50, & they invited "young" Bob Moran to come.  Mike said he won't be able to eat too much because Dr. Jay is his doctor. Mike is way too heavy & doesn't exercise & has a bad heart.  Bob Moran doesn't work, has a trust fund to live on.  Lives at the Commons Apt. & doesn't do much.  Bob could do some of the things they paid Larry to do but the Dad never thought he could do anything.  Talk about ruining a child's self-confidence.  Larry is his closest friend but they don't see each other too much since Lar married Kim.  It is Bob who feels that way.  He wouldn't even go to the wedding (Lar & Kim's).  Thurs nite they weren't sure if Bob would come.After supper & cleaning up< I sat on the nice clean porch & enjoyed coffee & cookies.

Sun the 24th

When I came home from church, Barb was so upset.  She couldn't find $800.00 cash & her check book. When the bat was upstairs, she had taken the money & ck book out of her hiding place & when she saw the bat -- money in hand -- she came downstairs in a hurry.  Then she was going to Bert's & she didn't want to go upstairs so she put the money in the buffet with he silverware. Then she forgot.  She was very upset but you couldn't help her. She was going to the police accusing the roofers.  Both Dale & I said they wouldn't do that. We left her alone.  Sitting downstairs I was thinking about it.  If anyone was going to steal anything they'd look downstairs first.  I thought of the sterling silverware & looked there. Lo & behold there were the 2 bank envelopes  check book. Mother came to the rescue and all is well.

Tues the 26th

I'm watching the 5 pm Buffalo news on WGR & UB has such an increase in enrollment that some students are staying in Motel & another motel for 1 semester.  2 new Jrs. to U.S. like it.  Their own bath & AC.  They are installing washers & dryers as kids have to do their own sheets, etc.  They also like the continental breakfast.  Do you think grades will improve?

We've had showers today -- cool air is coming in.  The grass isn't as green as it was.  It doesn't take long to dry things out.

Aug 27

Just finished washing the kitchen floor.  Dale is vacuuming in the attic.  The 3rd A.M. to do this. Some vacation.

Sept. is soon here & I have to have the downstairs in good order for the 17th.  For the cottage meetings the church is having.  I'm making a schedule of things I have to do -- washing my cups in one cupboard & the glassware in the other.  What's behind closed doors can wait.  I'm too old to say "yes to these things.  I'm the only one opening my home & having a 20 min. devotional, one mine might not be that long!

Aug 28

We had a mtg at church last nite & the group leaders discussed our topic & I understand what they want much better now.  There are 7 of us and it is exciting to see the leadership we have.  Both Nancy Davis, Nancy Sampson are more active in taking part. Diane Scarcella is really great.  She retired from teaching last June . The future is exciting.

Made a banana cream pie the first thing this A.M.  It's Thurs & Lar & Kim come. That spurs me to make a dessert.  We'll have an oven meal tonite as it has cooled down & is less humid.

I'm watching the Mets & Atlanta & the Mets are ahead 1-0.  Hope they keep it up.

Kim didn't say much about school.  They have new Health books to become acquainted with. She has lunch room duty so they keep her busy.

Guess I've covered all the news at this end.

Barb wants to know what you think of the N.H. ex gov. running for Pres.  She is impressed.

It's a cloudy Sunday with showers predicted.  I'm watching the Mets.  Cincy beat them last nite but it's 2-1, Mets but it's early in the game.

Fri. Barb & I went to Jamestown.  Barb got 3 pairs of shoes on sale.  We ate lunch there & got groceries at Wegman's.  It was a beautiful day, the best in a long time.  Barb also got some yarn & is making herself a sweater.

Salvation Army had a store in the old Betty Lee bldg. but they closed it last week. The rents went up & it didn't make money & what they made went to Erie.

I got prescriptions sun glasses & they are such a help.  Worth the price.

The buildings on the corner of Penna Ave & Liberty  by Levinson's, have been torn down in preparation for Northwest Savings building.  Warren is the center for their banking business. Something good is happening for a change.

When will Andy be able to take his driver's test.  Are you getting a new car so Andy can have your present car, Paul?  Now the fun begins.  "Mom, Dad can I have your car tonite?"

Gen called me this past week.  She still is unhappy because she can't drive.  And she hates, even more, the idea of having "that woman" in my home.  I asked what John says when she complains.  "Just a little longer."  Just like his father, humor Gen & all will be OK.

Wed. July 30

I have a meeting at church but I'll add a bit.

Barb heard from the Dr. & it isn't cancer.  But since it is so large, they want to take some more samples to be sure.  They find it hard to believe it isn't cancer.  She goes next Tues. & it will be done at the Dr. office as it would cost $2,000 at the hosp.

Tomorrow Bert's niece & granddaughter go back home.  Barb will go along & drive home. She'll get paid for doing it.  They leave from Buffalo airport.

Dale was suppose to leave tonite to go to school in Pittsburgh.  When he came home from work he said he didn't have to go.  Too much work right now, & that is more important.

It was a short mtg. about the cottage meeting coming in Sept.  We chose our dates (Sept 17 for me), time & saw the names we have.  We send out the invitations, etc.  There will be a devotional period of 20 min. & I'm one of the leaders.  I said I think 20 min. is too long.  I think 12-15 is enough.  Based on Acts 2: 42-27, a description of early church.  I have 12 names.

They are having vacation Bible school this week & it is successful.  We haven't had one for a lot of years.  Sometimes they went in with First Luth. but we didn't get a good attendance of our children.  They've had 37 children so that is good for a start.  There is a lot of work for a new pastor.

The flying ants are bad this y ear.  They are around the back door & basement.  Every A.M., Dale vacuums them up.

Thurs. nite

After supper we sat on the front porch for an hour.  Kim isn't ready to think of school yet in spite of all the adds & sales for school clothes, etc.

Noticed a marriage license that Karen Seeley's ex is getting married.  It was in today's paper.

Mike Brindis' brother is visiting Mike so twice this week Larry took vacation days & played golf with them.  Paul Johnson is a friend of Mike's brother & he played with them.  Mike can't walk the course & sometimes he couldn't walk from the cart to play his ball.  He's too fat & smokes cigars & that doesn't h elp him.  It is sad.

Not much goes on here -- all is well with us.

The Mets just tied the Phillies -- dare I wish for a win?  They took the lead -- 5th inning.  They won!

Last nite we were at Lar & Kim's for dinner.  Steak on the grill & it was so tender.  It was chilly but we dressed for it as we like to eat on the deck.  They bo't a chimnea & they had a fire in it & it was nice to watch it burn & it gave off a little warmth.  They are so lucky to have that place.

Dale is on vacation this week.  Wed. he goes to a neurologist in Erie.  Kim doesn't think he should go alone so Lar will go with him.  They have to be there for a 9 A.M. apt.  He's been fine with the medication.

How did Eddie like being away from home.  He has been away but with grandparents so that is different.

Enjoyed reading about your 4th of July experience with Mike.  We had a good dinner & you missed supper which was probably sandwiches & you probably didn't want to fix one.  But I still sounded like a "mean mom!"  That's life.

Last nite we feasted so tonite we'll fast.  Dale said he liked the idea of a salad topped with chicken.  I have strawberries & when the game is over I'll make shortcake so we can have strawberry shortcake for dessert.

In the Family Circle I saw a recipe for flourless choc. chip cookies.  Brown sugar, peanut butter, baking soda, an egg, and choc. chips.  They taste good.  Sat. was a cool day so I made dinner rolls & used 3 overripe bananas & made banana bread.

My meal was cereal with a banana & blueberries followed by straw. shortcake. Made the salad for Dale but he wants to see the end of the NASCAR race in Chicago before he eats. Earnhardt Jr. crashed so he is out.  Also another bad crash but no one was hurt.  I enjoyed reading the interview with Ilene Bishoff, esp. the last questions.  "Any pet peeves".... I laughed at the answer "Interviews."  I wonder if she has any relatives in the Mt. Jewett area. Bishoff isn't a popular name.  The book "Walking the Bible" sounds interesting.*

We heard more about our pastor candidate.  She lived in Fla., became active in the church -- not brought up in a church home, so she considers herself a convert.  Taught school, active in church & local organizations.  A grad of Gettysburg Sem.  We meet her Aug 10, & vote on a call Aug 24 so maybe we'll have a pastor in Sept.  Those who met her are impressed.

*The cucumber salad -- Mizeria -- sound good.  Plan to try it.

Last nite Kim served a wild rice mix by Uncle Ben  & it was delicious.  Plan to get some. Also a carrot-raisin salad that is a favorite of mine.  She used match stick cut carrots that are available at BiLo.  Also have seen them at Wegman's.

Wed. the 15th

Yesterday I got my new glasses & decided to have sumglasses using my old frames.

Today I talked with the fellows doing the roofing next door & he'll give me a bid.  Lar said I should get 3 bids.

Yesterday I went to the library & got 2 books.  I read Kentucky Rich by Fern  Michaels & it was so good.  It is followed by a sequel so I'll have to look for it.  This A.M. I did a load of wash - clean sheets for my bed and washed the kitchen floor.  This A.M. I started "I Thee Wed" by Amanda Quick -- a Victorian theme that I like.

Dale didn't say too much about his visit to the Dr. in Erie but that he got a different prescription.  They hadn't gotten the results of tests taken at Wrrn.  Hosp.  The local Dr's office called this aft. & Dale mentioned about the tests.  The hops. can forward them.

This aft. I talked to the roofer next door & asked for a bid.  He came later with some questions.  Mentioned the porch off the little room upstairs & said the chimney needs pointing up.  The cement is crumbling.  I'm sure it will be an expensive job.  I told him to include those in his bed.  They (Barb, Dale, Lar) think it should be a tan roof & he'll bring samples.

When I went to bed last nite the N.L. led the A.L. in the All Star Game but this A.M. I saw they couldn't keep the lead.  Too bad.

Here it is Thurs. the 17th & time to finish this letter.  All is cleaned up & I'm ready for bed. I'm watching the Mets at Atlanta & the game is tied 1-1 in the 6th.

We sat on the front porch awhile after dinner.   Larry is trimming shrubs at Bonace's house. Kim mentioned that all the sores have their school supplies out already.  Something she doesn't like to be reminded of.

Atlanta just went ahead 2-1, so what else is new.  The Mets just don't have it no matter how much I Hope for more runs.  I hope the building the building the Mets are doing pays off.

Watched golf in Great Britain today.  With that wind & hilly grounds it must be a tough course to play on.

Guess I'll concentrate on the game.

Mets just got a home run. Will it mean anything?  More exciting anyway.

I can't believe the Mets took 3 games from Cincy.  And they played good games.  Fun for the fans, finally.  (Of course, Cincy isn't that good!)

Our 4th was very quiet here -- for us.  I was tired out & spent the A.M. dozing in my chair & wasn't even that hungry -- Barb took care of herself & Dale has his regular Fri. meal.  I fixed the chips for him -- refried beans, salsa, cheese & black olives.

Made up for it last night.  Fixed steak &  baked potatoes & tossed salad.  Tonite we're having chicken-broc. dish.

Talked to Roger Thelin at church.  The female pastor wants to come but there are still 2 things we need to do.  Invite her for a get together with the congregation & then the meg. to call her.  Maybe they can move & be in their respective churches by the middle of Aug. Roger thinks she is great & I'm sure all members will agree.

The 4th, in the aft., Kim was taking Torey for a walk & the heavy rains came & she got caught so she dame over here, cutting thru Beaty Field.  IT was a noisy shower & Torey was just trembling so much. Between the noises of the 4th & the storm Torey was a nervous wreck.

Tues. the 9th

I don't know if I've written this but I've often had these thoughts.  Dad steered a church to relocate & build a new church & he was so proud of the results.  His oldest son is in on building a new library & then in finishing the unused section and I know you are just as proud with your building plans.  We rejoiced with you in the building & dedication we were able to be in on & now I'm very proud that you can finish this section to add more space.

Last nite the Mets couldn't tame the Braves but at least they got some runs.  7-3 loss.  Bill Murray was at the game & in the broadcast booth.  H e is so funny & his remarks added to the game.  TBS has all the games but I watched ESPN last nite.

Wed. July 9

This A.M., I had my eyes examined & needed a few changes.  I didn't go to the Medical eye Dr. but over town.  I got new frames as the ones I have, I got from the eye Dr. & this one doesn't use this type of frame.  And they can't be colored for sun glasses as these lens don't take the color.  I'll look around for old frames & see if they could be used & the cost for the lenses.

Barb saw her Dr. today & he examined her breasts and found a lump in one of them so she has to see another Dr. the end of the month.  She hadn't noticed it & was surprised.  So if it means surgery, even if we had planned to go to the lake, she would have changed her mind. With no health plan that makes a big difference.

That was interesting about boys' and girls' names & how they have changed.  Dale once said he didn't care for his name but changed his mind once he became a Dale Earnhardt fan.  I've never minded my name.  When I was growing up, I always wanted a Paul, & a Barbara. Barbara because we took care of Barbara Smith & she was always such a nice person.  No reason for liking the name of Paul.  Just like it & Dad went along.

It cooled off so it is liveable to be outside.  I'm sitting on the porch.

I'm hoping to make cookies.  Scott wanted some of his birthday.  Maybe I can bake Fri  aft. as it is suppose to be in the 70s.

I'm planning to have an oven meal Thurs. nite.  Don't like to use the oven when it's humid. Also decided to make my favorite pie (or one of them) lemon meringue.

It looks like the new neighbors are going to put on a new roof.  It's strange as Carey's had one put on a couple of years ago.  Dale says we should have a new roof.  We'll talk it over with Larry Thurs.  They will have to strip all the old shingles & maybe might need new plywood.  It will be a big job.  Maybe then we can get rid of the bats.  When the trees come down, that should help, but who knows how long that will take.

Gen just called to say hello. base She is OK.  I'm sure she gets lonesome being alone so much.

We're having cooler weather & I love it.  Sat. A.M. I made a coffee cake, banana bread that is in the freezer, dinner rolls, choc. chip cookies & the Turtel Turtle bars from Bon Appetit.  The base part you bake 15 min; pour syrou syrup (can't spell tonite -- my mind is on the upcoming Yankee-Met game.  I know the Mets will lose) & bake another 20 min.  I think they came out quite crisp but still very good.  Next time I'll line the tin with foil & watch them closer, probably cutting the time a minute or two.  They are very good -- like candy -- with a cup of coffee.

Warren called this aft.  They want to go out to lunch at the Dam tomorrow noon.  I get a perm at 2 but Warren said they'll get me back in time.  He likes to take side trips (like someone else I know) & time flies.  They'll pick me up at 11:30 A.M. Tues.  Barb & I will go to Jamestown.  She needs organic foods from Wegman's.

Barb fixed 3 tops for Bert this weekend.  She wanted them shortened & she wanted them done by hand, so it took longer.

I've been reading on the porch & its so nice to sit out there.  Got 2 books at the library & read them this weekend.  Both excellent reading.  Starting Over by Robin Picher, son of Rosamunde P.  And The Midnight Hour by Karen Robards.   Both new to me, tho I've read Rosamunde Pilcher.

July 1

I don't know how Anna keeps up with Warren.  Last week they, with 3 of their children & families, were in Bar Harbor, Maine.  They got back in time for Synod meeting.  Out to lunch yesterday, going to visit Judy in Ohio this week.  Home ma bit & then off to Mass.

Yesterday I got some of my Mon. A.M. duties done, got ready to go out to lunch.  We had a great time & they got me back in time for my 2 pm perm.  At the Marina we sat outside -- it was so beautiful to be there.  Enjoyed our lunch.  While we were sitting there  about 12 motorcycle copes entered the parking lot.  It was fun to watch them park their bikes.  They were from Erie.  After my perm, Barb & I went grocery shopping.  I fixed hamburgers, an easy meal, for supper.  After I cleaned up, I went to my chair & took a nap.  I'm not sued to so much in one day.

This A.M. I finished my Mon. duties -- cleaned the basement toilet & tied up the newspapers. I water fertilized my plants  mixed more water fertilizer & then I sat for awhile.  Now I should dust.  Barb had to take care of Scott this A.M. & Bert didn't need her, so after lunch we'll go to Jamestown.  Two days in a row I'll miss my soaps!!!  And don't say I won't miss anything. I'm anxious to find out who is the father of Carly's baby!  Ha, Ha!

Later

We didn't see anything at the Mall that interest us.  N.Y. put the sales tax back on clothing so I'll shop at home.

When we got groceries I saw Eugene Vavala & said "hello".  He said he was thinking of my & my rolls.  I set Danish tonite & will bake them early A.M. when it's still cool.  Should make or bake a pie crust & make a strawberry pie.  The local berries are so good.  I got 2 qts today.

We got our groceries today & found out it was senior discount on Tues. so we got 5% off our groceries.  We wondered why so many old people were out & blocking the aisles.

How is Andy feeling about the Braves pitching.  Last nite Maddux lasted 4 innings & the Marlins won.  Tonite Hampton is pitching & the Marlins are ahead 7-1 in the 4th inning. The Marlins are pretty good.  They got a pitcher from Chicago White Sox & he beat the Mets twice with really good pitching.  He is from Calif. & his mother is a welder on bridges. Single family mom.  What team does Ed favor?

Dale is scraping the sill part of the window at the bottom of the basement stairs   He'll fill the holes & that will seal the window from extra breezes.  He did that with the 3 other windows. It makes a big difference in the winter.  When he does a job it is a thorough one.

Wed July 2

I'm taking it easy & watching S. Fran at St. Louis on ESPN.  I wonder what Andy tho't of the Marlins-Braves game last nite.  20-1, Braves lost.  And tonite the Marlins's great pitcher pitches & if he is on it could be another loss for the Braves.

I decided to have a salad meal tomorrow, a chicken salad & a new recipe I saw.  Shrimp riced salad  So I got the chicken cooked, the rice boiled so tomorrow A.M. i can get the salads made before I get my hair done.  (Fri. the 4th)  I don't go til 11 A.M. so that gives me more time.  Also plan to make a strawberry pie.  And today I washed the kitchen floor. I'll have fruit, relish tray & rolls also.

I know I just got a perm on Mon. but I like to have it washed again so that's why I choose to have my perm on Mon. &U then my regular appt. the end of the week.

Also called to have my eyes checked but not by the regular Dr.  I'll go to the one over town Barb & Dale go to.  I've gone there before.

89 & humid at St. Louis.  It's not that bad here but it's suppose to be more humid on the 4th.

I'll mail this tomorrow.  Will also go to the library for more books & also have to go to CVS for medication.

Guess I'll check out the Bon Appetit that came today.

Eddie fogs the yard in preparation for Bastille Day

I enjoyed reading about your party.  It was a busy week & few days before the party but I know it is well worth the effort.  Were any of the relatives there -- Mim & Tom & Carolyn & Jim.

I got one of Judith McNaught's books & it was good reading.  At first I couldn't find the "Mc" but asked for help.  I remembered seeing Ed McBain's book but have never read any of them.

Today the Mets can't do anything vs. Cincy.  It is suppose to have reached the 100's.  It has been nice here but it is getting warmer.  Time for the AC I guess.  Dale is sitting in the sun & he has a nice tan on his body.

Kim enjoyed her trip to Fla.  She enjoyed being with the niece & nephew.  They've had nice weather for their weekend trip.  Torey is staying with her friend Nancy & family.  They have Torey's sister.  Kim was upset as they had a new kitten & Torey doesn't like cats.  She said her twin aunts in Fla. have 30 cats & when you go into their new home all you smell is cats.  They have a couple of dogs.  All stray animals.

I'm on the front porch now -- there is a breeze so it's not bad sitting outside.

Jim Lynch is up for reelection for State Representative & for about a week he's had ads on cable TV & they seem to run every 15 min.  He's been good for Warren but this is too much of a good thing.  He doesn't have any opposition.*  To make matters worse the phone rang & Dale answered & it was a message from Jim Lynch!  And his picture is always in the paper.  Enough is enough.  *No Democrats are running.

In July we have had 1/2" of rain.  It is so dry.  Rain is forecast but it never comes.  Rain is suppose to come this week & we hope it it true.  Barb waters the garden so the plants are producing veggies for us.

My mind is a blank -- nothing happening here so that means nothing to write about.

In August Barb & I are going shopping at the Grove City Outlet Mall.  It is big with lots of stores & that means lots of walking.  We went once with Kim but it was new to us -- this time we'll know what to expect & which stores to go to.  Time goes fast at the outlet stores & I get tired.  It will be something different for us.  We plan to go on a Mon., hoping it won't be as crowded as later in the week.

Finally cool weather & I took advantage & did some baking.

Made zucchini bread (does it have 2 "c"?) & finally found a recipe I like.  Most recipes call for 2 c. sugar -- this one only calls for 1/2 c. sugar, & 1/2 c. B. sugar.  And the 21 plants in the garden are really producing as well as the cucumbers.  Made c. c. cookies, pie crust & brownies.  Like to have pie crust in the freezer in case I want to make a pie.

We had a little rain yesterday & then it cooled off & it is suppose to last a couple of days.

I'm putting together another puzzle.  It keeps me more upbeat than just sitting & I do a lot of that when it's hot & muggy.  I get lazy in humid weather.

Have you noticed some of the Mets are coming alive -- esp. Mo Vaughn.  Fun to watch him run.  They are getting closer to the wild card.  Too bad the Braves can't stop winning.  Will there be a World Series?

Kim talked about making a peach pie.  I'm not sure if I am that fond of peach pie but I'd like to trying making one.  Maybe one for next Thurs.  Have a recipe I'll try.  This week we're having hamburgers & corn on the cob.  Might make a pecan pie -- one of my favorites.  Guess I'll roll out a crust.

Thurs. the 25th.  It's reallyl cool -0- I could have had an oven meal but we're having hamburgers, etc.  Barb got corn to have.  I made a pecan pie.

Kim & Lar had an enjoyable weekend.  They came home Rt. 6 & saw Pa.'s Grand Canyon & thru Coudersport & saw the new bldg. that Riga built & no one uses it.  The homes, etc.  He supported the town so you wonder what the people will do now.  Why do they have to live like kings.  Kim thought the bldg. had gold trim.

I'm sitting on the front porch & decided I'd better start a letter.

Yesterday was a busy day.  Got my usual Mon. jobs accomplished & got a perm at 11 AM.  I really needed one -- long & not much curl.  What a relief to have curl again.  In the aft. we went grocery hopping.  Got it out of the way.;  Barb works for Lynn. Tues. Wed & Thurs aft so it's after 4 before we can go grocery shopping.

Imagine you are a little relieved your big party is in the past.

Your Wed. family outing sounded very interesting.

I tried an author new to me.  Karen Robards.  It took me a few pages to want to continue but I really enjoyed it.  Another author I plan to check out is Judith McNaught.  Robard's books have a southern flavor.  I'll get more of her books.

Paul, don't you know the grass is always greener on the other side of the street in reference to Middleton vs. Cross Plains.

Kim comes home today.  We'll hear about her trip on Thurs.  I know she played golf a couple of times & they would visit her twin aunts who live close to her sister.

Torey won't be happy this weekend as Kim & Larry will leave on Sat & stay overnite, coming home sun nite.  With Betsy Moran & her husband, whose name I can never remember, they will drive their Miata to Corning, N.Y. & stay overnite there.  Betsy's husband had to heave a Miata convertible after he saw Larry's.  His is navy blue.  It should be a fun time for them.

Last nite Dale went out on Sam B's boat at the Dam. They swam & had a good time.

Twice today the same people looked at Carey's house.  It is taking a long time to sell. Don't know if they have come down on the price.

I mentioned Bert's relative, 10 yr. old Courtney, was here for dinner.  She seemed to enjoy herself.  She is very talkative & can be funny.  It was nice.  She ate everything on her plate.  After miniature golf they got ice cream.  Both Bert & Courtney's mother like to drink & it doesn't take many drinks to affect them.

I got nowhere with USA's puzzle today.  It was harder than usual.

I can't believe it -- the Mets are playing winning ball.  Bo Vaughn & Jeromy Bernitz are hitting finally.  Maybe they can climb the ladder a bit.

Wed. nite

Dale is reading the book on NASCAR you gave him for his birthday & finding it very interesting.

It's a hot day -- AC is on -- & when I finished the dishes I watered the flowers in pots & the rose bushes.  They are blooming.  Lar doesn't think the soil is that good for roses.  We'll see. He planted roses for Careys & they are going good.

Barb saw that Hatch Patch had corn & bo't some & it is delicious.  We're lucky to have Hatch Patch.

Dale is home shortly after 4 pm & gets into shorts & sits in the yard & reads.  It's good to relax.  He had a headache yesterday.

Gen hasn't called so I called her last nite.  She said Ed is better & looks better.  Her impressions are different from Millie's.  he told me she is tired all the time.  I asked her if she's seen the Dr.  She told me she has her checkup in Aug.  It is hard to know what is going on when I'm in Pa.  Luckily Edith is a good sister in law & helps Gen.

We're hoping for rain tomorrow -- Thurs -- as it is in the forecast.  The lawns are so brown & the soil is cracking in places.  Barb keeps the veggies watered.  I saw a recipe for zucchini bread that calls for only 1 c. sugar & I want to try it.  They & the cucumber are ready to pick & we've enjoyed them.  We have green tomatoes on the vine.

Fri.  I'll get this finished.  Kim enjoyed her tip but was glad to be home. Tonite Lar & Kim are attending one of the plays at the Library Theater.

Today has been a lovely day & I took advantage & did some baking.  Coffee cake, Danish rolls, & banana bread that will go in the freezer.  I was down to 3 Danish in the freezer.  Also made brownies.

Paul, I didn't forget!  Don't you remember before Lar & Kim's 15th wedding anniv. you called & wondered if I'd get them a 30.00 gift certificate from The Cafe & I did.  That is the $50.00 I was talking about.  You promised to send a check to me when you wrote!

Warren had a big fire you'll be reading about when you get the Wrrn. paper.  Conewango Club.  Started in the early A.M. hours -- roof fell in & parts of the porches came down.  Main parking lot was closed off as well as 2nd Ave. so parking was at a premium.  The library got some smoke but they don't it think it did any damage.  It was closed yesterday.

Too many distractions trying to write a letter on the porch.  So I'm inside now.

Mon. July 1.

This was the day I went to the dentist & I hope nothing happens before May 2003, my next checkup.   This aft. we went to the Mall & then grocery shopping.  Wanted to go today rather than tomorrow as it was will be more crowed crowded then.  (I'm watching TV again.)  And it is suppose to be hotter so I can stay inside.  Bad enough today.

Barb picked 8 qts of strawberries.  She froze 2 qt. for smoothies.  I used 2 qt. & made jam this aft.  Looks nice.  And we have berries for shortcake & maybe a pie.

Did I already write -- Lar & Kim will be at a friend's house on the 4th so they will come for Sun. dinner.  The following Wed. Kim will fly to visit her sister & family in Fla. for almost a week. Lar didn't care to take vacation then.

Tonite I made tossed salads with strips of chicken & rolls.  Mine was smaller than Dale's & it was tasty.  We also have left over pizza from last nite.  Dale said the heat doesn't make him that hungry so he prefers lighter meals & he likes salads.

Just wrote a note to Ruth.  Got ambitious.

Barb helped me finish the puzzle. I'll probably start another one.  In this hot weather I need a puzzle to work on.

The rabbits have been eating the beans Barb planted so she'll use a wire fence to protect them.

She says the bifocals work great for knitting & watching TV.  Wish I liked to knit.  She does such nice work.

Kim stopped over yesterday -- she drove.  Too hot for Torey to walk.  She walks AM's when it's cooler & not as long walks -- Torey is getting older, too.

When I saw the Dr. my blood pressure & thyroid were fine.  And I don't need a blood test before my next appt.  And the tooth that broke off is fixed so I'm fine for awhile.

The freezer we have isn't frost free & the frost accumulates & builds up on the food.  So next winter when it is cold I'd like to get a new one & it has to be frost free!  In fact, Sears has them on sale now but there is no way to store the frozen food.  I told Dale of my idea, thinking he would say you don't need another one, but he agreed with me.  You have to be careful or the door doesn't completely close & then things melt & that isn't good.  So when the temp is 0, we'll get one, store the food on the porch & wait for the delivery.

Nothing special happening for us on the 4th.  We'll have a cook out & enjoy the day.

Fri. Ted & Pat Benson will pick me up & we go out to lunch at 5 Forks Restaurant on the way to Tionesta.  It is buffet & salad bar with good desserts.  On rt. 62  It will be nice to see everyone as I missed the last get-together.

We've been watching tennis from Wimbledon -- it's been interesting.

July 4th

We were awakened at 6 A.M> with 6 "BOOMS" going off to signal the start of the Fourth.  They Jaycees are still in charge but like everything else the manpower is slim & how much longer they'[ll be in charge is a question.

I made a potato salad this A.M. & we'll have hamburgers.

It's too hot to sit on the porch so I'm inside.  Dale is tanning outside.  My rose bushes are blooming.  I love them.

It has warmed up so I'm sitting on the porch.  Earlier in the day I set dinner rolls, which I refrigerated & choc. chip cookies.  After supper I baked the cookies & enjoyed one with a cup of coffee on the porch.  Tomorrow A.M. I'll bake the rolls.  Suppose to be in the 80's the end of the week. 

The people across the street, corner house, are having their late roof power washed.  They took a tree down on the north side & the roof on that side was covered with moss.  It looks so nice but it also has taken paint off the house so it will have to be painted again.

Thanks for the pictures.  I like the new cupboards & the different arrangement of the L.R.-D.R. area.
And what an improvement in the floor of Andy's room.  It looks so nice.  Would Eddie's room have the same kind of floor.

Kim enjoyed their golfing weekend but this is the last time to go there.  This year a couple of gals backed out the last minute & they had to find subs as they had to pay for them regardless.  Next year they might go closer to home -- like Peak 'n' Peek & just stay 1 nite.

When we got groceries this aft. we tried the corn on the cob -- 5/2.00.  It was pretty good.  We noticed Hatch Patch had strawberries but we didn't stop.  Probably 2.50 a qt.

The Mountain Laurel in the front of the house is in full bloom.  The first time so all of the rain must have helped.  It's pretty. 

I talked to Millie.  Ed's throat & one side are paralyzed so he can't swallow.  They had to put a tube in his stomach to feed him.  But he can talk.  John & Edith are very worried about Gen staying alone.  John disconnected something in the car so Gen can't drive & John would say he's too busy to fix it.  They are afraid of her reaction if they tell her she can't drive.  So she up & called AAA to take the car where they bot it & have it fixed.  When John heard that he told them not to touch it & tow it back.  It's tough when both of them are ailing.  I know Gen would hate to leave her home.

Yesterday I went to the dentist & he filled 1 tooth.  July 1, I go again for the tooth that broke off.

Tomorrow I go to get a blood test as I see Dr. McNett next week.  I'm taking care of myself.

I was very happy last weekend when the Mets took 2 of 3 games with the Yankees.  Doubly happy when Moe Vaughn hit a home run when his hitting has been zero.  If the team could start hitting it would be good.

I've been looking for a peanut butter brownie recipe & finally found one in one of my books.  They came out really good.  Just made a half recipe & they went too fast.

Golf was interesting last weekend.  A noisy crowd.  I was rooting for Tiger but Kim & Barb wanted Phil N. to win a major.

Wed. the 19th.  I got my dinner rolls baked & in the freezer.  Barb took me to get my blood test.  On the way home I stopped at the post office & got the new 37 cent stamps plus 3 34 cent stamps.  The new stamps start on the 30th of June.

We got the Fall-Winter Penney's catalogue so it's been fun looking thru it.  Not too much appeals to me, tho.

Wed. aft. baseball - Texas vs. the Cubs.  Beautiful day to watch a game at the park or field.  Will you get in on any of the All Star game to be played in Milwaukee?

Did Andy get his new bicycle?

Thurs. aft.  In the mail today, I got Ruth's new address & phone number.  Was glad to get it.

I'm all set for Kim's birthday dinner.  We're having steak, pot. salad, fruit salad (cantaloupe, watermelon& green grapes, all on sale this week), fresh beans, rolls & strawberry shortcake.  Barb stopped at Hatch Patch for berries.  2.00 for a very full qt.  The ladies at church said BiLo's shortcake is very good but Barb didn't see any so we have homemade shortcake.  New recipe, made in cup cake tins.  Looks good.

It's warming up but I haven't turned on the AC yet.  No humidity so far.

We got the necessary items for Lar's birthday dinner today.  Yesterday we got flowers & this aft. Barb is planting pots.  We chose pansies, petunias & dahlias plus allysum or however it is spelled .  They are looking nice.

This A.M. I made pie crust & banana bread.  Then my usual Tues. duties.  We're having an easy supper -- pizza & salad.  We are trying frozen Freschetta on Kim' recommendation.  They had a pizza party & tried different froz. pizzas.

I wrote what we are getting for Lar's birthday:  cherry beer but you can only get it in Erie & Kim's friend Nancy is going to Erie & will pick it up.  I did find a Snow Baby soccer figure so he has a little gift to open with his special "50 year" birthday card.

Fri. nite we are going out to celebrate Mother's Day.  I never like to go out on Mother's Day as it is usually so crowded.  So I prefer Fri. & we will go to Fernwood -- just out of Warren toward Sheffield.

The children's part of the library looks so nice.  Looking in you see a small arc of computers.  I never go into that room so I just get a glimpse of it.

Scott was telling Barb he is making bombs.  She cautioned him about talking about it in school as he could get in trouble.  She doesn't think it is true as he talks a lot about his ideas.  Lynn had a call from the school about his swearing on the school bus.  Poor Lynn & she wants everything so perfect.

Sat. Kim is planning a party for Lar.  Some of the couples they are with a lot.

I pressed Dale's birthday shirt & tan Dockers in case he wants to wear them Fri. nite.  He usually wears good jeans when we go out.  Now he has another pair he can wear.

I wonder -- I didn't find out what Lar wanted for his birthday dinner as I think he didn't tell me til Thurs. & by then your letter was set to mail on Fri.  I'll report:  turkey breast, sweet potatoes & apple pie.  I wrote to Gen & usually my letters are similar --i.e. news -- so sometimes I don't know what I write to whom.  I also wrote to Darla.  I'm glad you aren't an English prof & grading my letters.  At times they sound mixed up when I reread them.

Did I write I got another Country Cook Book & it has some good recipes.  With all the cook books I have, menu planning should be easy but it isn't.

Next Tues. is the Bible Study at church & I bring rolls for coffee.  Wed. at 1 pm I have a dentist applt & cleaning.  My usual schedule will be upset & somethings won't get done.

What room will JoAnna want to paint next.  Your bedroom color sounds nice.  A good way to get a room housecleaned or spring cleaning done.

Your writing about your library work never is boring for me.  I like to hear what is going on in your lives -- meaning the entire family.

Barb decided she needs more plants  so we'll go for more.

Things are happening in Warren.  Maybe it will wake up people to see that we need to move out of the rut the city is in & that improvements & jobs are needed.  The commissioners are in the hot seat, esp. Hunter.

Mary Ann Carey had surgery on her back in Fla.  They should be home any time now.

Larry & Mike were up in Buffalo a couple of weeks ago for Paula's husband's 40th birthday.  Kim was invited but she didn't go.  Mike & John (husband) became good friends as they were neighbors when they lived in Warren.  John would spend time with Mike.  I think sometimes Mary Ann & Jack come on too strong for John & he needed an escape.

The pizza was pretty good but rather spicy for my taste buds.  Good crust.

Barb gave me a rose plant for Mother's Day.  It will go in with the roses Lar planted years ago.  They are pretty but don't last to pick for a vase.  This one is a regular ever-blooming plant by Martha Stewart so it had better be good.  I might buy a 2nd one myself.  I like roses in a bud vase.  Barb's next job is to hose off the porch & get the porch furniture down from the attic.  Soon we should be able to sit out there & watch the cars go by.

I have to send my health insurance payment in each month by the 25th.  I completely forgot Apr. so it was late.  Now I put the envelopes I have addressed for each month by my church offering envelopes so I won't forget.

Got your letter today.  I'm out  on the porch starting a letter with my coffee cup close at hand & some sweets.  Sweets I shouldn't eat but not enough will power.

Wed nite Viola Seaquist came over & we had a nice visit.  I asked about the meeting at church they had when we were gone.  I guess I shouldn't have.  The congregation is divided.  At the beginning Passingers were very close with Gary & family & now they're against him.  Son Tim P. even went to the Synod office -- they want him gone now!  The big thing everything is so secretive & he doesn't do visitation.  And if he visits the nursing homes, etc. he doesn't offer to pray.  Bernie Bloom is in a nursing home & Irene was there when the pastor visited.  Irene wanted to ask him to pray but she chickened out.  A sick or shut in member shouldn't have to ask a pastor to offer a prayer.  That is part of his calling.  We have about 600 members on the roll must be some deadwood) & not even 1/4 attend church & the Sun. School is pitiful. It upsets me but all we can do is to pray for our church.

Kim is still upset.  The gym is her space so when she teaches Health it is in various class rooms.  This year due to a change in the health class curr currucillum cure curriculum (looked it up & still can't remember the correct spelling but I hope you can figure it out they are uniting the 9th & 10th grade classes (it's for 9th grade) so Kim will have 44 students & no classroom will hold that many kids.  The job has been posted & a teacher at Abraxas has applied for it.  A big guy who was in sports.   Kim says hire him as maybe his size will help keep the kids in order.  A few have applied for Wrrn Hi job.  Kim hopes one fellow who teaches grade school phy ed will retire next year & she would apply for the job.  She has some seniority & it might be enough.  That's her dream.

The new Readers Digest has some interesting articles esp. one on back pain & one on road rage.

It was interesting to read the letters in response to the article on foods for men & women.  Barb fixes herself a tofu meal.  Now she has gotten a food powder with tofu she adds to her smoothies.  She has them for lunch.

Barb got her pictures & there are 2 of Eddie that are so good.  One in Middleton where was Andy when Barb was taking pictures) & one at the lake.  We're getting some reprints.  A cute one of Boxer also.

Fri. we went to Jamestown -- Lakewood Mall.  Then to Bemus Point & the Italian Fisherman.  We sat on the porch & viewed Lake Chautauqua.  It's in the vicinity of The Surf Club & Barb is familiar with that!   I had a fish sandwich & Barb a salad.

We stopped at WalMart & I got a crochet hook like Joyce had so maybe I'll get started on something.  It has a hook on both ends & you use double yarn.

We've had a little rain but not enough so they're asking people to conserve & save water -- don't keep the water running when brushing teeth -- shorter showers, full loads of dishes & clothes.  That's not hard.  It's the people with wells who suffer the most.

Walked over town this A.M. to the farmer's mkt & got 2 qts blueberries.  Maybe I'll make a blueberry pie.  I made a peanut butter pie after lunch.  It's so easy & you freeze it.  Dale likes them.

I'm ready for fall & to wear clothes with collars & not feel too hot.  Or clothes made of little heavier material.  Haven't bo't any thing new for fall -- haven't seen anything I really like in my price range.  They say plaids are coming back & I have 2 plaid skirts, several years old, & I'd like new tops for them.  Feels like nap time.  More later.

KMart changed their shelves -- different aisles & some of them are not full.  I needed bags for the compactor & they didn't have any so Dale went to Sears & got a pkg. for me.  I'm lost without it.

I'm watching the Mets vs. San. Fran. & they have a big crowd for the game.  It will be on ESPN Sun nite & again it's on TV on Mon. NY channel WB 11.

On the Penn State channel we watched the Auction, no, not the auction, the Antique Roadshow & it was from Madison.  Lots of goodies that would bring dollars.  At the beginning of the show they showed the State Capitol & surrounding areas & Dale said "I've seen that."

Don Glendenning is in the booth with Seaver & Thorne & they're talking "old times" & it's fun to hear them. They were talking about the Pirates & their great teams -- winning teams.  He was on the '69 Mets team that won the series.

Today Barb wanted to go to the bank at the Mall & I went along & went into the shoe store.  Got a pair of Dexter shoes on sale.  In brown (only color) & haven't had a pr. of brown shoes for years.  Thicker soles -- good walking shoe & they are so comfortable.  And they were only $29.98.  Couldn't pass them up & I'm glad I got them.  Slip ons.

Sun the 26th

I think today we heard a rebuttal at church.  Gary didn't preach on the gospel lesson but form Jeremiah, when he was upset by his followers.  It was like he was comparing his situation to Jeremiah -- the frustrations, the people, etc.  But I'm sure it didn't help, only flamed the fire.  It sounded like he means we have to take him until he decides to retire.  Also 3 council members resigned:  Patty Phillips, Lisa Passinger (Tim's wife) & Patty Morelli.  All are faithful members.  I never dreamed it was this bad -- you two are my sounding board -- the others aren't that interested.  If you're tired of it, you can skip over it!

Each one of us is watching golf on 3 different TVs.  What an exciting time -- Tiger & Jim Furyk are on their 7th hole to break a tie.,  Finally it's over & Tiger wins.

This is Dale's week to work on Sat. & it cooled off after some summer weather, so I decided to do some baking.  Made dinner rolls, baked the sweet rolls I start the day before, choc. chip cookies & date cookies.  Have to make use of cooler weather.  That was my day's work.

I'm watching the Mets win for a change -- 8-1 over Arizona.  They are starting to hit so it's more fun watching the games.

Barb is switching between baseball & hockey -- Penguins vs. Buffalo.

Dale went to the junk yard looking for auto parts.  Usually looking for parts other want.

Lar & Dale saw a place for sale -- think it is on Elm Blvd. near the Mall & Shults.  Not much of a house & garage but Lar thinks it would be a deal for Dale.  And Larry is willing to help & give advice to Dale on the remodel.  It goes for $32,000 & Dale has more than one half of the money already.  He stopped at the bank to see about a loan.  He doesn't have a credit rating because he pays cash -- doesn't buy new cars because he loves to fix up old ones.  But he's been stable in his job & I'm sure he would get a good recommendation from Shults.  Tues after work -- early week -- he will get to see it with the realtor, & maybe make a bid.  Others have inquired.  Lar thinks it would be a good deal for Dale & it's time for him to think of the future.  I don't know how large the lot is.

Yesterday -- Fri. -- Barb & I went to Jamestown after lunch.  We did a little shopping, but nothing great.  Just little items.

Thurs Barb hosed off the front porch & got the chairs out.  After supper Kim, Barb, Torey & I sat on the porch.  Seemed good to sit out there again.

Maybe you noticed the Women's Club is having a Home Tour.  25.00 is the cost.  One of the homes is Cobham Castle & that is the draw.  Also the house across the st. from us, the former Dunham home.  And the -- I can't remember the former owner, but it is the on that has the circular driveway on Conewango & now owned by Charles Conaway.  He moved back, bo't the house (his wife died & he retired) & has remarried.  She was Lois Bartholomew, divorced & had a daughter Barb's age Mary Beth & a son Tom who was a handsome kid.  The house is in the next block from us.  Sheila is going on the tour but Kim doesn't want to spend 25.00.

Bet the boys had fun seeing the new ballpark & the game.  Nice that Eddie has enjoyed Cub Scouts.

Your kitchen sounds so nice.  It seems like it didn't take too long to get it together.  Probably it did to you folks.  But it's worth it in the end. Now you have a nice new kitchen.

Sun. May 6

This aft. Ted Benson called & said they were coming to Warren for a song service at First Luth & would I want to have them pick me up & go out for a sandwich.  I said yes.  But I changed the plans & we had a sandwich here.  I took chicken breasts out of the freezer, baked them & served them on a roll with mayor, lettuce & tomato.  And date bars for something sweet.  They liked the idea.  Easier to talk there & then I went to church with them.  Combined choirs from the district with a director from Minn.  Very talented & a real inspiration.  Choir numbers & congregational singing.  Fran, our former organist was there -- she is now at St. Joseph.  The choir director from First Meth. was there as well.  I don't like to go to these events alone, so I stay home. Fran said their choir is coming to St. Paul next Sun to do 2 numbers with our choir.  That will be nice.

Tues A.M.  I get a perm. at noon so will mail this.  We've all had colds but they are almost gone now.

Sunday, August 1, 1999

The Mets finally beat the Cubs in 13 innings & what an exciting & frustrating time.  Both teams used most of their players & it seemed neither team wanted to win.

It's finally cooling off.  Just turned off the A.C. & opened doors & windows.  Nice breeze.

Today at 4 pm Lar & Kim were entertaining the Crary Home residents at camp.  Grilling hamburgers, having corn, etc.  Fri. Lar made the final payment on the Miata.

If I read your letter correctly you leave on Thurs. for La.  And you should have enjoyed a visit from Tony & family.  Friendships are so nice to keep up & a visit is even nicer.  And you have another one to look forward to.

Gen called the other nite & they've made good use of the pool during the hot spell.  They have blueberry plants & are enjoying the berries & blueberry pie.

Aunt Esther was 100 in June & is bedridden & they have a tube to feed her.  Warren (cousin) is trying to get her off the tube but it takes time, etc.  He must have power of attorney but it requires permission so it takes time.  A living will is best.

To see our downtown area today is sure different from what you saw on the internet.  I think the Busy Bee has changed hands & Lar thinks the Texas lunch is still there but I think there is a new owner also.  A popular place to eat here is the Plaza.  It is really busy & noisy during the lunch hour.  Good food.

Aug 7.

Now it's Sat. nite & I'm watching the Mets beat L.A.  The Mets are really hot now & I love it.  [They were ahead, but lost.]

It has cooled off a lot & it is so enjoyable, especially sitting on the front porch.  Good for baking & I've made cookies & rolls.

Mon. the 9th, Barb, Kim & I are going to Jamestown for lunch & shopping.

Got your letter today.  Sounds like Tony & family's visit was a great success.

I'll be anxious to hear all about your trip to La.

When does football practice start for Andy.  What will Eddie be doing - probably soccer.  How's his bike riding coming.

Reread the letter & realized I've neglected to finish it sooner.  Last Tues. Betty Casey & I went to lunch.  Every booth & table was in use at the Plaza so we went to Penn Laurel & had a nice lunch.  Much quieter there & more class.

We have the railing up on the front porch steps.  It looks nice I think, but it didn't satisfy Barb.  It is narrower as it was fastened to the sidewalk rather than the steps.  Hard to explain but we have a railing now that's the main thing.  Don't want anyone falling or losing their balance.

Now it's Sun. aft. the 8th & I'll get this finished.  Since church is at 9:30 for the summer I can read the Buff. paper before lunch.  I'm sending 2 articles I think might interest you.  One on Frank Lloyd Wright's window displays in Buff.  And the one by an intern Dr. who has an article monthly & I fins them very interesting.  May you will - interesting story on "smells".

The Mets didn't have it last nite & lost to L.A.  Better luck this aft.  They come on - oops they are already on & I missed the first 10 min - how could I do that, esp. when I was watching the "enemy"!!!

Barb finished the outside door in the little room upstairs.  Now she's working on preparing the tin roof for painting.

Betty Casey told me her son Mike decided to go to college 20 years after high school.  Had served in Vietnam so he got the G.I. Bill & he graduated with honors from one of the U.W. schools.  He lives in Eau Claire.  I think he's in some kind of youth work.  I'm sure you remember him.

School starts here the 31st.  When do the boys go back to school.  Is Andy getting excited about going to a new school.  Will Eddie be coming home instead of after school - can't think of the correct term, but you know what I mean - I hope.

The Little Tyke

I'm relaxing on the porch after a somewhat busy day.

Wed/ we went to Jamestown.  We stopped at Kerr's on the way in to look at sofa beds & price them.  They were on sale - we saw one we both liked & put $50.00 down on it.  We want to clean  & have the rugs shampooed first.  Shades of blue is all I can remember but it will go with our colors better than what we have.  T hey will hold it 'til we're ready.  They deliver to Wrrn. Tues & Fri.  What to do with what we have - probably call the Salvation Army.  Thurs. Barb started cleaning the L.R.  I helped some but since I'd been up since 6 A.M. & made pot. & chicken salads for supper I wasn't ready to clean.  Barb didn't get up til 9 A.M.

Today I cleaned 1 corner of the D.R.  Removed the contents of the china closet on the N. wall.  Dale moved it out and I washed the walls & ceiling, & polished the wainscoting & chine closet.  Got it moved back after vacuuming & got the dishes put back.  Barb had been weeding at the library & after lunch she continued cleaning in the D.R. around the windows & over to the other china closet.  We'll finish on Mon & I'll call to have the rugs cleaned.  If they can come before Fri. I'll call to have the sofa delivered, otherwise the next week.  I can't believe the3 D.R. walls.  You can definitely see the difference between the washed & unwashed walls.  The last time we really cleaned was 6 yrs ago when Dad's sisters were here for his 50th anniv of ordination.

In Jamestown we also bot a roll up shade for the porch windows.  Ivory color.  Dale put it up - looks nice.

Barb has been busy working on the garden, etc.  I think the property looks very nice with mulch, etc.

This A.M. Lar & Dale laid the blocks for the walk in the back of the house.  It looks so nice & much easier to carry the clothes basket to hang up clothes.  Dale also got blocks to extend around the curved line of the garden to the fence.  They are shaped to fit a curve.  Cost him about $180.00 for materials but it was "bugging him" so he improved the property.

Last nite Boston beat the Mets in 11 innings & I stayed up til the end.  Midnight.  Early to bed tonite.  this aft. the Mets won in a good game.  The new player from Hawaii - Benny - is really good as well as Roger Cedeno from L.A.  Bet they wish they had him back.  Leads in stolen bases & he hasn't been an every day player.  How can they not play Roger & Benny every day.  Bench Bonilla the 5 million player.  He's past it.  The other 2 make it exciting for the fans.  There is a lot of turmoil in the Mets.  Wonder if Bobby Valentine will last the season.  He's not my favorite.

It hit 89 today, 90 the past week, but it wasn't as humid today.  No rain tho & we really need it.  I hope the cool forecast for next week is correct so I can do some baking.

We'll celebrate Kim's birthday next Sun.  Fri, Sat, & part of Sun. a group of "girls" are going to the Pittsburgh area for a golfing outing.  2nd year.  They stay at a motel or hotel & they make all they golfing arrangements.  Different course Sat & Sun A.M.  Better golf courses this year - last yr. they were disappointed in the courses.  Be home for 6 pm dinner Sun. nite.

They are picking strawberries at Hatch Patch.  I bot a quart - they are so good.

Heard from a friend from Auburn we exchange Christmas greetings with.  They sent a memorial of $20.00 for Dad so I wrote a letter of thanks.  Sat. I received a letter so I guess I'll keep the correspondence up.  Dad married them - young just out of high school.  They'll celebrate their 49th anniv. this year.  Big family 3 girls, at least 3 boys.  Originally from N. Dak.  Her dad is 92 & still living.  One bro. a Luth. pastor, retired now.  They're doing some remodeling to the kitchen & bath of their home.  They had 2 girls & now grandchildren graduating from college.  She mentioned another old member will be 90 yrs old the 17th.  Rosa Keller & they were so good to us.  Auburn was a great experience for our for a first call.  Many happy memories - you & Lar were born there.  I can remember you as a little tyke as if it were yesterday.  Your blond hair & red baseball cap.

It will be a hot day.  I just hung clothes outside.  This aft. we'll get groceries.  Tonite I'll go to LCW picnic & made a salad to bring.  An ice cream salad.  Dissolve jello & 1 c. hot water.  Add a pint of ice cream.  Melt.  Add fruit.  Easy & tasty.

If this heat keeps up I plan to have a salad supper on Thurs.  Chicken, broc, fruit, etc a variety.

June, July & Aug. church is at 9:30 A.M.  Nice before it gets too hot.

Our yard is really looking nice thanks to Barb & Dale who keep it up & of course Lar who did the landscaping. Mulch sets it off.  Too hot to sit on the front porch but the chairs are there.  We need to get a new blind to keep the sun out of the windows on the west side.  Hard to find.

I really enjoyed the Mets-Yankees game last nite.  Two streaks broken & to think it was the losing Mets who did it.  I'm sure Clemens & Jeter didn't expect that.

I could tell Andy was pleased with his double & they won as well.  Lots of games coming up.

Tues. A.M.  9:35.

I've got my big chores done for today.  Cleaned my room, hall, bathroom & stairs.  Dale takes care of his room & Barb takes care of her B.R. & the TV room.  I like to work early & then at 10 A.M.I get to watch Equalizer & Murder She Wrote at 11 A.M.  That, & do my 1000 pc. puzzle.  I'm also doing towels & a load of bathrm. rugs that have piled up.

Dale got the stones yesterday & Lar will bring another load of gravel for a foundation.  They dug around 6" deep, gravel & then the squares.  Should look nice.  Dale did it because "it was driving me nuts" when he mowed there.  The garden was enlarging & he didn't have room for the mower.

Haven't turned on the A.C. yet.  I keep the house closed up during the day & that helps.  I'm hot now but I've been working.

I can't believe you vacuumed the fam. room before you went to bed.  Did I raise you kids to be so fussy?  Barb has to have things just right in the garden - colors that blend.  If you don't buy all the mulch at one time, will it match - not be too light or too dark.  Dale likes to vacuum the stairs with the larger vacuum as the nap comes up better.  The hand vac is good enough for me at my age.  Too bad I didn't do better spiritually!

Hatch Patch advertised home grown strawberries in the A.M. paper.  When they open it for picking I hope to go.  Need to replenish my straw jam.

This is Barb's last day of caring for Scott & she works all day.  Plans to take Scott to Lar & Kim's camp this aft. as he has been asking.  He's not improving in his deportment.  Has picked up swear words & of course Lynn is very unhappy about that.

Thanks for the pictures, menu, etc. of your party.  Sounded like everyone had a great time.  I'd like to hear more about the food - sounded so good.  You have such a nice back yard for a party.

I can't believe how tall the boys are getting.  It will be fun to see them as well as their Mom & Dad.

Dale is on vacation this coming week.  He finds things to keep him busy.

Kim says one of her friends will be having 2 of her nephews visiting the week of the 9th & Kim said they will try to do a couple of things together.  They might be a little younger.

Now I'm on the porch with a cup of coffee, after a supper of baked beans, hamburgers & corn on the cob.  It's a beautiful evening.  The weather report:  By Wed. hi in the 90s, low in the 70s.

I saw Carey's go out & about 6:30 their alarm went off.  I couldn't find Larry & Paula wasn't home.  The police came to investigate & I told him we had a key but I don't know how to turn it off.  He could see the dogs running around - maybe they tripped the alarm.  It finally went off - guess the Co. is able to do that.

Kim went to Erie last Tues. to look for furniture & found what she liked at a discount store.  Looked other places first.  They plan to put their apt. sofa bed at camp in the den & the new one in the apt.  She got a couple of chairs also.  And Lar bot a water heater so you'll have hot water when you stay (sleep) there.

Please remember to bring the boys HELMETS as I'm sure Andy will want to ride the bike.  Our sidewalks aren't too good for roller blading but lots of kids have & use them.

Last Mon. I had a dental appt.  One of my front teeth needed a new filling as it was turning dark.  What an improvement.  It didn't hurt as the tooth had a root canal many years ago.

And I got my new lenses - same frames.  A big change & it has taken time to adjust.  Table & flat areas are at an angle but it's improving.  One eye wasn't seeing too well & there is a cataract growing but not close to being removed.

The cancer society had an all nite walkathon at Beaty to raise money.  The only drawback is they play music very loud & most of the nite.  It was quiet from 2 A.M.-4 A.M. & then you could hear more music.  Not good for sleeping.  They rasied about $27,000.00

Did you notice the Mets won 2 games in a row.  On Fox TV today.  In one inning they had 3 great outs - infield outs.  Sun.  The Mets lost today.

We're watching baseball L.A. vs. St. Louis.  The gold in England was exciting this aft.  I was rooting for Mark O'Meara.  He won.

Hot weather is returning - I hope for another cool spell so I can bake Andy & Eddie's favorite cookies in Pa. Maybe they have other favorites at home in Wi.  Hi in the 90s low in the 70s.  You ask about Paul's favorite cookies - maybe!
