Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

I'll start a letter as I can't wait to tell you how great Andy's pictures are. I really like the one of the front view in shirt & tie. I love the shirt & tie colors & it looks so good on him. They are all so good & I especially like the close up view of him in the brown & tan shirt. Has he chosen one -- it must be hard to make a choice.
And your evaluation was certainly a glowing report. I'm very proud of you. You take after your Dad. He was good in his work ethics and attitude, if that is the right word. I remember when he was thinking of retiring he said to the Council "maybe I'll stay one more year," & one of the members said let's say yes before he changes his mind.
Your library really has an active attendance -- we have nothing like that. How was it to be "king". Did you take pictures?
Last Thurs. Kim said you might see my name in the paper for golf. She had one of her best days & was first in group. I don't know if you check golf scores when you read the Wrrn. paper. I saw it in the paper.
Tues. Barb & I are going to the Indian casino in Salamanca with Kim. We'll leave at 10:30 & they have a nice buffet luncheon. Last time Kim, Betsy & Dani went they each spent $60.00 gambling. My limit will be 10.00 plus lunch.
We finally had rain on Sat. but it didn't cool things down. This week should be cooler -- I hope so as I need to do some baking.
I'm watching golf but it isn't Tiger's weekend. It could be between Phil M. & Davis Love.
Forgot to mention in the last letter that Barb likes to sleep in a dark room. The school yard has 3 lights in the play area &^ 2 are very bright. Before we changed rooms she covered the windows to keep it dark. I sleep with a nite light, the light from the lock, & the light that seeps thru from the school. No problem. Most nites I have no problem getting to sleep. The nites I have trouble are few & far between.
It was hot in church today. Nothing is cool enough for this weather.
We are eating tomatoes from the garden. How are Ed's coming?
Wed. the 17th
We had a great time at the Casino. We got there at 11 A.M. & the place was busy at that early hour. We were there about 1 1/2 hrs. I was the stingy one spending $13.00 -- no gain. Kim did the best but kept playing till all the money was gone. Barb had no luck either. We enjoyed lunch at a place on the way home. Eating at the casino is on the expensive side & it's in the middle of nowhere, practically so they can charge high prices. They are building a new larger casino & it looks like they will have a hotel on the upper floors. Dale has 1 more week of vacation & the 3 of us are making plans to visit the casino. Dale thinks it would be nice to eat at the casino.
I keep looking at Andy's pictures & they are all so great, it is hard to have a favorite.
Pittsburgh is at the Mets Tues, Wed. Thurs & all Pirate games are on TV so I get to watch the games. Pitts. has a great new young pitcher so Thurs. nite's game should be special. He is 5-0 with a low percentage.
Last pm I set dinner rolls. They are easier to handle if refrigerated overnite. Finish them this A.M. & tried a new recipe. Zucchini-carrot bars & they are good & very easy to make.
Lar & Kim enjoyed their weekend. Fri. nite Lar chose the special which are usually not high priced. It was shrimp & lobster Y& when the bill came it cost $45.00 so it was an expensive meal. Lunch the next day added up to $100 so it was an expensive weekend. But Larry said this is our vacation. They stayed at a bed & breakfast in the U.S. All filled up on the Canadian side.
Thurs. the 18th
At noon today Dale said some of the guys at work went drinking last nite & got drunk. One of them was suppose to take his girlfriend out to dinner & never showed. She was furious. Dale said he doesn't miss that. It was pay day so maybe that had something to do with it. Dale just saves his money. He has more than enough for a substantial down payment on a house. But he is content here for the time being.
Youngsville made the USA Aug 17th business section. About a former chimney Steve Sivak going to become a pharmacist & has 10 months left. Classes in Erie. Interesting story.

I went to church this A.M. & had a coughing spell during the sermon. Nothing helped, but I finally stopped. We have had some leaking around the steeple so we had a meeting after services. Before the vote, the leak was explained as well as what needs to be done. They will take the steeple off, fix around the area, & put the steeple back on a cushion of some sort. They also said some thought we shouldn't put the steeple back & the floor was opened for comments. I said we need the steeple or it will look like a motel. (Someone once wondered if it was a motel.) It will be fixed & the steeple put back on. I don't usually speak up, but to look complete, the steeple is needed.
Warren's graduation was bad. Some years ago, they bro't beach balls to outside graduation. Now they added a blown-up penis (a nurse popped it) & water filled balloons. Some parents encouraged it. One of Kim's friends, a teacher at Warren, refuses to go to graduation. It's a farce. The parents don't even dress up. After graduation, Sheila cut one kids hair. She said to him, "You guys didn't act very nice at graduation" -- he said don't include me in "you guys". So not all kids like that kind of humor.
Sheffield's principal is transferred to Youngsville. Kim didn't always see eye to eye with him, but she hates to see him go. He put into practice orders from Central office & they (others) don't always do that. They refuse to.
As usual, I'm watching the Mets vs. Royals. Mets 3-0. I'm holding my breath to see if they can be ahead in the 9th. They need to win at least 1 game!!!!
Kim plays golf every Tues. A.M. A woman's league (Blueberry) & Kim made 46 for 9 holes. She was pleased. Kim had low net of 31, whatever that means. I know par, birdie, & eagle & that's about all. She was pleased. If the Mets weren't on TV, I'd be watching golf.
This year Barb planted lettuce in pots. Last year the in ground lettuce was bitter. She likes it better in pots & tastes better.
They said Art Howe shouted at the Mets after their bad plays. I can't imagine him shouting -- he seems like a gentle man. I think it's paying off -- now it's 5-0.
Dale got his muffler in his car after work yesterday. He noticed he needs a new tail pipe -- was disgusted with himself for not noticing it as then he could have put a new one on at the same time.
We went to Jamestown but didn't find anything special We had a fish dinner at Davidson's. Barb did find a birthday gift for Kim. And we got groceries at Wegman's.
Tues A.M. the 14th of June
Yesterday the pastor called & wondered if I'd serve on the stewardship committee. I told her I was 83 & didn't care to. She couldn't believe I'm 83. Also I had a coughing spell on Sun. but I hated to miss church. I'm still coughing but I hope it's better by Sun. next.
Thanks for the pictures of your beautiful yard. That's a really big tree. Yardwork is a good hobby. I can see that Ed is really changing. Hearts will get broken by your sons! Handsome guys!
Did you get the sports jacket you had your eye on?
Wed. the 16th
Barb will start kemo the 28th of June. They wanted her to start June 21, but she wanted another week. It's not something person looks forward to.
One Sun. Lar, Kim & Betsy M & her husband, in their Miatas, went on a little ride to Salamanca, N.Y. &^went to the Indian Casino there. They tired the slots but no big winners.
Thurs. the 17th
Made a strawberry pie & it looks delicious. We're having chicken & biscuits. Homemade biscuits. And lettuce salad from the garden.
Just wrote a note to Ruth.
The hosp. called. Barb had to be there at 7 A.M. Around 10 the hosp. called. They injected a dye & it takes time so she would soon be going to be operated on. So maybe she's there now. Kemo next. Hope it all works out.
Cold is gone, but I'm still coughing. SOon it will be over. Otherwise all is fine here.
At 5:30, the hosp. called & said Barb wasn't able to come home yet. The anesthesia & pain pills don't agree with Barb. At 8:15 Barb called & said she wanted to come home. Kim picked her up & Barb said she told them she felt better, but to Kim she said I don't really. Under her chin, she has a bandage patch. I think she'll fell better in her own bed. This reaction was worse this time than last operation.
Fri. Barb is feeling better.

Torey is here today as Lar & Kim went to Erie. They'll come for dinner tonite as tomorrow nite Ted Benson has planned a 70th birthday party for Pat. I'll ride with Ray & Eleanor Forstrom - to Mt. Jewett.
Fri. A.M. Warren wants me to meet them at 8 A.M. on Rt. 219 so Barb will bring me over there. It will save time so we should get to Gen's earlier. He first said 9 A.M.
Gen called last nite & Sat. nite we'll be at Edith's & Sun. at Millie's. She has other things planned.
I read your "story" of your trip thru to get the highlights. Then I read it a 2nd time to digest it. Sounds like you got your fill of fish. Bet it tasted great. It sounded like a fully wonderful time. You'll enjoy dreaming of the next reunion & what you'll want to take in. Travel thru Canada going & then New England on the return trip? I think you wrote it would be 2004 - can't find the sentence in the story by just scanning - but the boys would be going on 16 & 13 & probably be taller than their Mom & Dad. Hard to believe.
It's raining today & on the cooler side. More rain is forecast & with the hurricane on the way, wonder if they'll hit the N. Eng. coast.
Tomorrow I'll pack - have every thing already to go & I get my hair done at 2 pm. Ray & Eleanor will pick me up at 6 pm.
East Longmeadow Mon the 30.
The party was fun & a complete surprise for Pat.
Fri A.M. Barb & I left for Rt. 219 at 7:15 & I met Warren & Anna there & we were on our way & Back back to Wrrn. It was a nice drive & we arrived at 4:30 pm. Warren & Anna left for Hartford & a visit with Mark & family. We went to the China Panda for dinner & it was a delicious meal. Not real "chinesey" as that is not a favorite for me.
Sat A.M. about 10 we picked Millie up & went to the Yankee Candle at Deerfield, Ma. A beautiful place both inside and out. All kinds of candles & I understand the idea started in this man's mind when he made a candle in school. A Christmas tree room with ornaments for sale (expensive), a Santa toy shop room, an "oompha band" where 3 German dressed characters (very true to life) sang & played German songs & had a little banter between them. Very real - the trumpet player moved his fingers on the trumpet. Accordion player moved one hand up & down. 3rd one had cymbals tied to his knees & they moved back & forth & neither Gen or I can remember what he played. They sang too - mouth moving. All computerized. Lots & lots of all kinds of candles. We had lunch at one of the eating places. A nice time.
Sat. evening we had a delicious dinner at Edith's. She has such a lovely home. Sun. we went to church at 9 A.M. Just took it easy until it was time to go to Millie's. Another delicious meal: ham, pot, salad, beans, corn on cob, & a new dessert she tried which was very delicious.
This A.M. we are going to the Indian Casino in Conn. Millie said she would spend 5.00 & no more. Edith said she might try once or twice & then go get a cup of coffee. I'll try & Gen might but they won't make any money off of this bunch. We just want to see it. There is an Indian Museum there & stores to go
Warren will call tonite to tell if we leave Tues. or Wed. He thinks it will be Wed. So I'm hoping if we have Tues. here we'll "hit" a mall. Be disappointed otherwise. It's a nice time but I'll be glad to be back in Warren.
John is taking the day off & will take us to Conn. He took me for a ride in his Triumph - wrong spelling of the car, I think. A convertible. Along his roller blading rte. Such beautiful homes being built - so large & expensive.
Andy - you better root for Penn State. They really beat Arizona. Maybe they'll go all the way! They are #2 now on one poll I heard.
How is school going for the boys.
I'm on a "low" - no T.V. this long weekend. No sports, no soaps, no weather channel. How long can I go without it!!!
Today is beautiful & on the cool side.
Millie, at 85, has lots of energy & spirit. Always looks nice. Takes good care of herself.
Hope to mail this today.
