Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

Thank for the news article on the library open house & the picture of my handsome grandson, Andy. What a heartbreaker -- I'm sure the girls think he's cool! Same for Eddie when he is 16.
And thank you for the lovely fushia -- that doesn't look right but I can't find it in the dictionary, but you know what I mean. It has double flowers. Very pretty. Another one hangs on the front porch & it is from Dale. A yellow flower like a small petunia. Barb gave me a plant for inside & one I think I can have for awhile as it doesn't take much water so I won't over water. Larry dug up the roses opposite the back door & planted 3 rose bushes that have blooms you can cut & they'll keep awhile in a vase. We went to camp for supper Sun. nite. We were on the deck & the weather was perfect. We'd had storms so the creek was really running. It was a nice time. And thanks for the cards. I'm a lucky mom!
Had my mammogram & the gals said "See you next year." I don't think so. Dr. Fino said I should have one, & so did Dr. McNett but I never followed thru. Dr. Clifford gave me info & I tho't I'd better do it before my May appt. Just made it.
This is Dale's late Tues. He worked til 5:30 & then went to take a 3 hr. test to keep his accreditation. Every few years they must take it.
The School Board is having problems but ti has awakened a group in Warren to fight this. They don't want a tax hike; or a high school in Tidioute; & they want the new school finished for a grade school & not a middle school. More fun.
I won't get my hair done this Fri. Barb has to take 2 tests.
Gen called the other night. She sounded good. She wondered about Barb. Don't think I mentioned this -- but I had a note from Ruth with Mim writing it for her. Carole's daughter had a 2nd son & Mim & Tom were going to Alaska for 5 days.
Had a nice visit with Viola but her house was so warm I started coughing & my eyes teared. Didn't stay long so I managed.
We'll celebrate Lar's birthday on Thurs. Sun. we had steaks so it wasn't time for steaks so soon, & we have a lot of chicken & pork so it was decided to have hamburgers & pot. salad. The menus for birthdays it seems. I'll make a carrot cake, Lar's favorite. Sat nite we all are going out to eat at the Fernwood a little past the bridge going toward Clarendon. On the left.
May 12
Yesterday Warren H. called & said he had a dentist appt. today & did I want to go to lunch. Naturally I said yes. We ate at the Plaza. I like it there & the food is good. They had been in Cancun for a week & enjoyed it. Another couple went with them. Lots of good food & drinks. Warm ocean water. Sounds nice. Anna had gained weight & the Dr. wasn't happy.
In my present bedroom the fan isn't noisy so I had it on low during the night. It is warm for May.
I'm watching baseball in ESPN2 -- Braves at St. Louis & in the 4 inning St. L. leads 3-0. They lost last night. Am I happy. YES!! How is Andy feeling these days when the Braves aren't much better than the Mets!
Today I showed Warren & Anna the info you sent me on the library work. They were impressed. Warren asked if you got complaints on certain books people don't approve of. I didn't know & said I'd ask. Anna's cousin is a librarian in the Boston area & she has received complaints at times. Against a certain book, etc. I said you are in a more liberal area -- so close to Madison & the University.
Thurs, May 13
Larry is still mowing the lawn where Mr. Crossest used to live. A couple from the Phila. area & want to move back to Warren. He is a Boger, father Dr. Boger, a dentist. They have to find jobs here so the house is empty & they asked Lar to continue the lawn work & trim.
After Mrs. Morelli died, they sold the house. The wife tho't it was too small so they added on the empty lot on Redwood. Lar was asked to submit a bid for yard work. He starts soon. The bid was $5,000.00 & he got a down payment of $2,000.00 to buy shrubbery, etc.

We have a nest of birds in my geranium plant. That has happened before, & the parents abandon the babies. These are alive -- just barely. I have watered the plants daily before I realized there was a nest.
Northwest Savings sent out letter concerning buying some of their stock. Both Larry & Dale plan to buy shares.
Sheila & another operator are thinking of opening their own shop & have found a place. Sheila works long hours but doesn't see any increase in pay. They haven't told Jerry yet. Sheila & Sue each have a 1/4 share in the business & don't know if Jerry will buy them out. They both have a good clientele & that won't please Jerry a bit. There is too much pressure there & they don't want that anymore. Another gal is retiring the end of Aug. She is 66 & her husband is retired.
The Mets finally played a winning game this aft. Last nite they almost came from behind. Lost by 1 run. A rookie won today's game. 6 ft. 6" & 245 lbs. The wild car races should be very interesting.
Tues. the 5th
Today Barb had another test on the lump on her breast this A.M. They took a larger sample because they can't believe it's not cancer. We'll see!
Enjoy reading about the family reunion. Yes, times sure have changed since we were first at the lake. I was surprised about Darla. Maybe she wanted to spend the time with her family.
I'm really surprised about Ruth. She always seemed so on top of things. You never know what life holds for you. I'm wondering if having to sell the family home changed things for her. I'm lucky having Barb & Dale here. It keeps me going.
Barb picked tomatoes & broccoli, green beans & there are blueberries in the bushes to pick. We have corn on hand so we'll have a veggie supper with chicken.
I got the estimates on a new roof.
Remove & replace shingles on house & garage.
Install new drip edge.
Install ice water shield.
Install 30# felt.
Install 30y shingle including stack vent boots.
Refash chimney (crumbling mortar)
$6300.00
Flat roof (off little room)
New rubber roof 1100.00
1/3 down to schedule
1/3 down to start
1/3 completion
Larry will see it on Thurs. I like the work he did on the next door garage-- he kept at it til it was complete.
The tax bill came yesterday. At least I have (I'm watching my soap & Barb is talking) the money for it.
It is hard to
Interesting pictures of the library plans. I can see the outcome clearer & the results will be wonderful. You will have much more space for books, and the computers will be in a good place. I love the elevator tower. This week the National Championship cancer races are in Warren. The waters are higher due to all the rains so that will make it more difficult. Next week they start preparing the bridge to be demolished. I will enclose some pictures Bert took showing the results of heavy rain last week. Take by Bert in her neighborhood. The 15th Bert will go back to NYC for awhile.
The house next to Bert, across the St. from the Crary Art Museum, has been sold. To a young couple -- the gal has a 2 year old. He knows he has a lot of work ahead of him & his Dad will help him. He doesn't have much of a job & Lois on the 7th Ave. side & Bert on the other side are concerned. They are afraid it will be like the former owner -- making things a mess. Not everybody is like that -- give the guy a chance, I say.
I'd like to know what I did to make Dale so fussy in keeping house. The sink has to be spotless, etc. Guess I should be happy & not complain. Maybe it's me -- a guilty feeling I'm not doing all I should but then I'm almost 83 have a right to be lazy! Ha! Ha!
Wed. the 7th
I was cleaning out the closet in my bedroom under the eaves & found the case Dad kept his robes in or are they albs. The white ones. I wondered what I would do with them & then I thought of Roger Thelin. He is a lay preacher & I asked him last Sun if he could use them. He was thrilled to think he'd be wearing Dad's albs. He picked them up yesterday & will wear one next Sun. when he preaches at Dagus Mines & Bethlehem, Ridgway. Now I just have the stoles.
Thurs the 7th
Warren H. called last nite to let me know he won't be going to Erie on Fri. for a get together. It will just be Warren & Anna & Ted & Pat & me so we are going to the Holiday Inn in Warren.
The National Canoe & Kayak races are in Wrrn. this week. Visitors are very complimentary concerning the beauty of the area & the river. The one drawback is the lack of room space. Many are camping at Chapman Dam & I'm sure Holiday Inn & Motel 8 are filled. If they like the area, they return in 5 or 6 years & if they come again, they hope the plans for more room space will come about. Different ones have commented the area should be pushed for tourism.
Tonite Kim said in 2 yrs. Lar & Kim, Betsy Moran & husband, Betsy 7 Michelle (Kim's friends) are planning a 2 wk. trip to Scotland & Ireland. Kim said Dale should come. Dale is buying $3,000 worth of Northwest stock. He has too much money in his savings!

Tom and Mim Warren, Rachel (holding Will) and David Morriessy, Ruth Benander, Carole and Arland Hultgren
Marv Gustafson was chosen chairman of the Church Council. They met with the new Bishop & he said he was impressed with him. Will be very easy to work with. Quite different from Paull Spring. So far no vice pastor has been appointed.
I was so thrilled last nite with the Ariz win over the Yankees. Now if only they can do it today & win the Series. I hoped Schilling can get the best of Clemens. His bubble needs to be punctured!
I have a 1000 pc. puzzle on the card table & I should finish it tonite while watching the game.
I'm sending you a picture of Sheila, Sue & friends on Halloween. Sheila & Sue came by on Halloween & I had cookies for them. Also I'm enclosing pictures Ruth sent me.
Genevieve Stark, Lila Stark, Mim Warren, Ruth Benander
Barb wants to go to Erie Fri, next, the 9th. It has to be a nice day -- mostly cloudy weather is forecast.
Your info on the libraries was interesting. Nice to see how others are doing it. You guided a new library to be built, & Dad guided a new church. Good experience.
I'm watching Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore. Pitts. is doing better this year. They lost.
Do you remember Harry Nasman -- he died on Sat. just short of his 85th birthday. Had a daughter Gretchen & can't remember the son's name. First wife died, married again. Son is Tom & they have a daughter Linda.
Mon A.M., the 5th
I'm on "cloud 9". Last nite I stayed up until 11:15 or so & was so happy when Ariz. beat the Yankees. What a 9th inning for Ariz. I couldn't have been happier if it had been the Mets! So many of the guys are in their 30s so it is great for them to get a World Series ring. Ex Cub Grace doesn't mind the move now.
Howard Ford has been sick & after many, many years, he resigned as St. :Paul's treasurer. He was treasurer when we moved here, I'm sure. Or soon after. It's a big job but the church sec'y does the counting, etc. so that is a big help.
Torey had to go back to the vet. Lar had to change the dressing & he didn't wind the gauze or whatever & it came off & because he wags his tail so much, it started to bleed. Kim isn't happy with the vet (this came about last Thurs. when they were here for supper) & Lar said "we're not changing vets." That upset Kim & she was very quiet during the meal. She left for her 7:30 Birthday Club. I'm sure she'll get her way in the end.
This is Dale's early week so I was up at 5:45 after a short sleeping nite. It was hard getting to sleep after the excitement.
We checked out waffle irons & they weight heavy so I think I'll send money so you can choose your own. Will that be OK. How's the list coming? I need ideas for Eddie's birthday.
Just the usual happenings here.

We're having summer weather for a couple of days so I'm on the porch & will start a letter.
I've started my Christmas shopping at a Bon Ton sale plus 10% coupon off. I noticed Dale could use a new satchel carrier or bag & got one for him. It is very nice & I'm sure he will like it.
Also I ordered new blinds from Penneys for the eating area. They are top down or bottom up shades. I like the idea of having the top down to let light in & the bottom down to protect form sun & privacy. Altho the trees have grown together & give privacy from the school yard.
This next week Dale will be on vacation & I hope he will get them up for me.
On Tues. I have a 10 A.M. eye Dr. appointment & he will take me over & I'll walk home.
Barb has been looking for a med. blue denim shirt. She looked in Madison, Erie & Jamestown. Yesterday she found just what she wanted at Bon Ton. She didn't expect to find one here so that was a nice surprise.
When Eddie plays football, do they wear all the equipment that Andy's age does. We were wondering about that as he is still in grade school. We should have sent you Eddie's picture but Barb wants to wait & finish the film.
Had a letter from Ruth. It must be this weekend that Rachel's baby Jack Franklin Morressey will be baptized by Arland in Beloit. David's parents will be coming form England.
She had to have a plumber come as she had plugged drain pipes. A new connection so they could use the Roto rooter. That's always a budget buster.
I go to the bank once a month & I list my needs & then figure out how much money I'll need by 20's, 10's, 5's, etc. It usually takes a little while to make it come out even, but I manage to figure it out. Then I have envelopes for flood, hair, spending, church, etc. It works for me so I don't overspend.
Your letter came today with the pictures of Andy. It is such a good picture with a nice smile. My handsome grandson! He got a nice hair cut. How many extra pictures did he have to exchange or don't they do that. I'm sure a lot of girls would want his picture. Thanks so much.
I'm watching Wis. vs. F.S. & it's the start of the 2nd half & I'm sure you weren't' happy with the F. S. TD. It was some run.
I've also been watching the tennis U.S. Open & they have been very interesting. Tonite the Williams sisters play for the title. Should be interesting. Barb & Kim were hoping Jennifer Capriati would beat Serena Williams so they were disappointed. Barb was rooting for Agassi & he lost.
Sun the 9th
Last nite I watched the Mets vs. Marlins. It was a seesaw game but the Mets prevailed. I'm sure you've noticed it's too little too late but I'll be glad to see them hit the 500%.
Dale plans to put up my new shade in the eating area & he will paint the basement shower. he also got a new shower head. So his vacation won't be spent only working on cars.
Yesterday Barb went back to Bon Ton to get a 2nd denim shirt but they were all gone. She was disappointed.
It's still warm so I turned the AC on. And Dale was soaking up the sun in the back yard.
I'm watching football -- switching from Fox & CBS. Enjoying Indianapolis beat the Jets. Buff. isn't doing too good, neither is Pittsburgh. I see Green Bay is winning.
Mon A.M. the 10th
Dale got the new shade up but he said he'd never put up another one. He doesn't think much of it but I thin kit will be O.K. Kim likes the ones they have in their bedroom.
This A.M. he has been scraping the loose paint from the basement shower. He is so particular. Next it's to wash it down good. Dry out & then painting.
We had rain during the night & this aft it is turning out nice. By the end of the week it will be jacket weather.
We're getting lots of nice tomatoes from the garden. Green peppers are good, too.
I watched a lot of football on TV yesterday. There were some good games & I enjoyed them.
Want to get this mailed.

We slept in a bit but we all are "laboring" some. I made a coffee cake & banana bread as I had ripening bananas. Just had a slice of banana bread with mid A.M. coffee. Also did my usual Mon. load of clothes & changed Dale's bed.
Dale, the 2nd one up, went out to the garage to work on one of the cars. The El Camino isn't turning out to his satisfaction so more changes are planned.
After Barb ate breakfast she went to work in the garden.
It has cooled off so yesterday I wore my new necklace, which I don't wear in hot weather. It is so delicate & dainty. I like it so much & when I wear it I think of all of you -- and in between, of course.
Was sorry to hear of Larry's setback but I hope this time the recovery will go faster. It has been a merry-go-round for the relatives.
Last Fri. Barb & I went to the Bradford Mall, thinking there was a Penney's store there. There wasn't but a salesperson suggested we go to Olean & we did. Barb didn't find the pants she wanted so she ordered them from the catalogue. She did find 2 tops on sale. There was also a Bon Ton in Olean. What surprised me the most was after 10 or so years I was able to remember the way. We found both Malls without any trouble. Not too bad d for an old lady!
The youngest Patterson daughter (undertaker) got married last Sat. & Kim & Lar were invited. 4 pm wedding & reception. So Torey was over here with us. Lar picked him up about 9:30 pm.
Last nite the lights went out for about a minute & came back on. It was on long enough for Carey's alarm to come on. We know Lar & Kim were at camp so we called & Lar told Dale how to turn it off. We have the key & that saved Lar a trip. The paper said there was electrical pole fire on the 300 block of Conewango. 8:20-9:15 it was fixed & it didn't affect our lights. I was watching a series of "Murder She Wrote " on A&E. Today they feature "Law & Order".
School started & Kim vows not to let the kids or things bother her. The other Phy Ed teacher, after a couple of days, doesn't know if he's cut out for this. You know how kids are trying the patience of a new teacher.
Last Sat. Dale went to Jamestown & said he might stop at Sam's Club so I asked him to pick up pecans for me. Kim was here & she wanted pecans. We got our pecans -- 2 lbs. for 9.00 -- & Dale also bought walnuts but he paid for them. Also got himself a pr. of shorts on sale.
In Bradford they have a Big Lot store & the salesperson told us Warren is getting one & Barb noticed lights in the old Penney's store so maybe that is where they'll be. Both Dale & Kim love to go there & find bargains.
Don't think I wrote this. Ruth called me one afternoon. Naturally, I thought it was bad news. It wasn't. She was working on the family history & wondered if we have one. I know we have some of it so she sent me the completed history she has worked on. It is very interesting. More than what we've had, more detailed of the Nelson family. So I wrote to thank her, answered Millie's letter & wrote to Gen. So I did my good deed. Plan to write to Darla but haven't had the inspiration yet!
I'm working on another 1000 pc. puzzle. I've done it before but it's still a harder one. If I don't have something to do I get bored, like Eddie says. Then I want to snack -- if I'm busy I'll still snack but not as much or as often!
Tues. A.M.
My regular chores are done & I've showered & dressed.
Adam, next door, got or passed his driver's exam & has his license. He had the car Sat. nite for a date. Twelve o'clock came around & no Adam. They -- Sally & Dan, went looking for him as today 16 yr. olds have to stop driving at midnite. T hey knew the girlfriend's house & there were to be there. He said he didn't know about the midnight deadline. Now he has to be home by 11 pm. Something you'll be experiencing a few years.

Thanks for a good time in Middleton. Dale had a great trip & looks forward to the next reunion. He hasn't traveled like the rest of you. Paul hitchhiked to Calif; Lar traveled across the country with Bruce; Barb joined the Navy. Dale went 1 semester to a school in Columbus, Ohio & wouldn't stay there. He enjoyed Devil's Lake, the trip to Milwaukee & being at the lake. He didn't look forward to work Today is his long day -- 12 hours.
It was a long trip home. After we crossed the bridge & toward Flint, Detroit, etc. We ran into a lot of traffic, the stop & go type. Barb was driving. After Flint, going toward Port Huron, it slowed down & was easier driving. It was a long drive between stops. We had a good breakfast at the motel & a rest stop before the bridge. At 1:15 we stopped at a Subway for subs. Rest stop at 4:30 near Port Huron. Got into Canada at 5:15 & left at 8:15. Easier driving but more traffic as we got to Hamilton. Finally stopped on N.Y. Thruway for a rest stop & something to drink. No dinner meal. Home at 11 pm Unpacked the car -- looked at the weather channel, in bed at midnite.
Mon. I did 3 loads of wash. We went for groceries as the fridge was bare. Then I made a good meal for supper. In bed at 9:30 pm.
Today I cleaned my bedroom & the bathroom. Then I ironed clothes that needed to be pressed & now its aft. & I'm taking it easy. Tomorrow I go to the bank to get cash for Aug. expenses.
Barb had a headache on Mon. & didn't work. Went back to bed til aft.
Lar was at Careys last nite & he was fine. Took the aft. off & played golf with his brother-in-law & the 2 children. Kim's sister & family arrived on Sun. We won't see Kim till the end of the week.
Were you aware that Lila can't control her bowels. Joyce cleaned up a mess -- Gen can't do it & they say Lila won't wear adult Pampers (correct word won't come) so they say. I bet Charles doesn't want to spend money on disposals. Joyce had to wash Lila & then washed disposable pants. I think it's too bad that Lila can't have decent care in a home. They always say Lila won't do it, but I feel that Lila doesn't know what is going on & that is cruelty to a human. I know Ruth is upset over the situation.
Looked thru the mail & found the taxes for the house had come & the household insurance bill. The good thing I have the money to pay the bills.
At first I was wondering how I'd take the trip but it went very well for me. And I thoroly enjoyed myself. I'll have to take good care of myself so I can make the trip in '03.
Ruth had a listing of all the addresses of the relations. We didn't get one. Carolyn thought Lar got one, but he didn't. If you have one, would you make a copy for me & enclose it in a letter.
I'm already making a list of things I'll want for the next trip. Things I discovered it would be nice to have had for this trip. Either forgot or didn't think about. Another thought, it would be nice to have the Fri. nite dinner at another place. And it would be nice to order from the menu. What are your thoughts. We are having very warm weather but by the end of the week it should cool off.
The Johnson's house across the st. is being painted using new colors. Now owned by Keeney's. A pretty beige color. A real improvement.
Mon A.M. paper told of a fire at the Liberty St. Cafe. It was destroyed & lots of smoke damage. But they plan to rebuild but it will be closed for some time. Extension cord was the blame -- accidental.
Will mail this tomorow.
P.S. The white envelope containing money I thought I had with me was at home in my "safe". A used large popcorn tin where I keep my monthly expense money.

Thanks for the pictures -- the boys room looks so nice & colorful. So do the cupboards. I'm envious.
What a good idea to send the project of Jeff''s to Albert & Cindy & then on to Hawaii It should be very interesting. Some people never move & don't have relatives or friends who are far away. Don't even know if Debbie has bothers or sisters.
Looking outside I see sunlight & blue, blue sky but it's deceiving as it hasn't warmed up much. We had a couple of days in the 40s & you can see the snow level is down. I did walk home on Fri. after getting my hair done. Felt good.
Lynn is concerned about Scott but won't allow him to have medication. He won't listen. Barb tells him he can't do something & he runs to the phone & calls Lynn . She doesn't want to be interrupted but he calls several times to try to get his way. She should just hang up on him so he'd get the message. Barb picks him up from school Mon-Wed - so he doesn't have to go to the Y. Lar doesn't mind he's not in soccer -- but he said there are others who are rascals. They have too many kids for those who help.
Back to memories of Auburn. The new parsonage was only a block from Strands & I used to take you over there to visit. You loved to take the pots & pans out of the cupboard & have them over the floor. I tried to protest but Mrs. S. always said let him bee. They had 1 daughter & she lived in Everett - worked so wasn't home much.
Had a note from Ruth with 2 pictures of Signe's party. She said it was nice you were able to be there.
Dale is on his way to Jamestown to pick up his rug. He bo't it last Sat. to be picked up today. He chose a light gray. Bro't home the padding last Sat. Plans to get rid of the desk. Lar might want it so it will be stored in the attic. It's a good desk & once shined up, etc. will look good again. I'm glad Dale is fixing up his room as it needs a point job, etc. What got him started -- he wired something, stereo or something & put the wire under the rug. When he lifted it up the underside disintegrated & he realized he should do something. It's been down a long time so he got his money's worth. He wants to get something to hold his TV, VCR, etc. & he should have a comfortable chair to sit on.
Don't think I told you Larry got a raise this year. Think Kim said it amounts to about $5,000.00. He has more work tho with the Salvation Army officer & wife living in one of the houses the committee bought. Had to do plumbing as the pipes froze. More walked to shovel - more grass to mow. They added 2 houses to that they already had but aren't able to use them as retirement homes so that's why the S. Army couple can live there. Couldn't get the ordinance changed but they're still trying. First Meth. church is the one who has the authority over it all -- not the ordinance, tho.
Racing season starts Sunday. Qualifying took place today. D. Earnhardt came out with a red car rather than the usual black. Don't know if it's permanent - my thoughts get ahead of my hand.
Now it's Sat. evening -- dinner over, dishes done (in dishwasher) & I had a little nap in my chair.
Dale's rug is nice. Lar helped him put it in the attic.
The veggie dish you had at Mim's sounded good. Peas, carrot & onion casserole. I'll have to look thru my cookbooks to see if I can find one similar. Kim said she's had one like that. I'm always on the lookout for an interesting veggie dish. Found one somewhat similar -- called for other veggies.
I'm tired at nite & if nothing is on TV I go to bed earlier but then I wake up earlier. L.A. Law is on at 6 pm & I got interested in that, then Law & Order. To keep awake I turned to Court TV & watch 2 programs from 8-10. Cops is one & then another one. Wouldn't care to be a policewoman in a large city. Get my eyes opened to what goes on in life watching those programs. Tonite at 9 pm skating comes on & that is interesting. Watched golf this aft & Tiger is moving up but not on top yet. Wonder if he can win his 7th in a row. He couldn't.
I read the article about JoAnna's boss. He must be a very interesting man to know & work for. May be the race be successful.
All is well here.

I've done practically nothing today except watch Ryder Cup golf on T.V. The Americans are a disappointment losing 10-6 on Sat & 14 points win. Another disappointment are the Mets. Can't believe how they have slipped. The young golfer from Spain Sergio is a breath of fresh air. He played with the Swede Jesper & they were winners. Hope you follow golf a big so you know what I'm talking about.
Last Wed. I went out for lunch with our pastor friends. We always have fun together.
Mon. Barb wants to go to Erie shopping. She is now working for 3 people - all due to Kim. And she might have another one - one of Kim's friends is losing her cleaning lady. Barb enjoys it.
Dale is now painting the side door of the garage & the final painting of the 3 windows he fixed. Did a nice job in them.
Mr. Curtin has his well digging rig at Camp & he hopes to start digging next week. His 85-year-old dad works with him. He is the one that climbs on the rig & Mr. C. is on the ground watching.
Lar took some time off to work on master bath & has the tile finished. They have a shower ordered. It is a larger one with a seat so you can sit down. More elbow room. T hat's why I like our basement shower.
Last Thurs. when Lar & Kim came for dinner I had something besides the usual chicken. Hatch Patch was still selling corn so we had steak, baked potatoes & corn on the cob & it was delicious. Kim had some a week ago & they didn't like it so we were lucky. It was our goodbye to summer meals.
Can't believe that Fri. is Oct. 1. Before you know it, Paul, you'll be celebrating your 50th birthday. How time flies. That means I'll be 1 year closer to 80 & that is harder to believe. That's old!
Kim was telling they have a new boy who is from Union City. He assaulted 3 teachers there & they were glad to get rid of him. How lucky can Sheffield be to inherit him. And some people think teachers have a soft job & get too much money.
Dale was saying one fellow at work knew someone working at Eisenhower Hi School in the cafeteria & due to the shortage of substitute teachers they asked this gal to sub. She refused saying I couldn't do that. That's scraping the barrel all right.
Sun. aft.
The golf is great this aft. with single play & the Americans are making the putts. If they should win it will be a great overcoming. I almost wanted to skip church but my "inner voice" said "no!" And I obeyed it & was glad I did.
What has happened to Wisconsin - I thought they were a better team, but they're losing. Has Andy noticed Penn State has been winning - at least so far. Yea, go Penn State! They have a very loyal alumni - they come from all over & tickets are hard to get to the games.
Saw the lawyer & the new deed to the house is soon ready to be signed. To be divided evenly between you 4, or the heirs. We changed it to "heirs" & Mr. Swanson wondered about the daughters-in-law. I said there's no problem there. He asked because so many mothers-in-law don't like or get along with theirs. No problem. I have 2 wonderful "daughters-in-law".
Just checked & Buffalo is ahead 16-0 in the first half. Barb is happy.
Guess this covers the news here. Nothing too exciting goes on here.
P.S. Ruth called to tell that Stella fell & broke her wrist (in a cast) & her upper left leg. She will have her leg operated on Mon. the 27th.
Ruth is fine. Has had her house painted & a new roof. New rug for the porch.
David will start a new job (chaplain) Oct. 17th in Mpls. Have to sell their home & by a new one there. Be nice for Stella to have him close.

We still have cool weather, in fact I turned on the furnace this A.M. to take off the chill. 42 at 6 A.M.
We put an ad in the paper to sell the davenport & love seat. The first person wanted just the love seat so I sold it & that was a mistake. Most callers wanted both. So we still have the daenport but one lady offered 75.00 for it (100.00 otherwise) if no one wnated it. The rugs will be cleaned on Tues. so I'll call her Mon (the lady) just to get rid of it. Be clear for cleaning.
Just called now to have the sofa delivered next Fri. aft. from Kerr's.
We have the L.R. & D.R. rugs cleaned. All will be nice.
Warren Hollertz called Tues. & wondered if I wanted to go out to eat with them. T hey came around 5 & we drove to the Dam & ate at the Dockside Restaurant. It was a nice outing. They went to Florida in Jan. & charged $2,000.00; to Aruba & it meant another 2,000.00 on the charge card. They had a great time but that's not for me. Could never be in debt like that. The difference in people. In Aug. they'll drive to Mass. & again in Sept. & they offered to take me. I might go in Sept. when it's cooler. It would be 3 weeks in Aug. & that's too long for me.
Got the Fall-Winter Penneys catalog today & started dreaming. Made a list of clothes I like - a dream list. 15% off if you order before July 13.
Ruth called last week to see if I was going to the reunion. She'll have a 2 bedroom place to stay & said I could stay with her but it's too far away for such a short time & I think I'm getting to be a "stay at home person".
Barb picked 8 qt. of strawberries & we've had strawberry shortcake & I made a batch of jam. Andy should be here to eat strawberries. They are so good.
Torey will be here Sat. aft. so he won't have to be alone when Lar works Sat. aft. Kim left this A.M. for the golfing trip. Cool but nice weekend.
Got mail from Register of Wills & they have a death tax on the bank acct. & C.D. we have so I have close to 500.00 to pay. I don't like that tax.
We're watching golf on T.V. A good one to watch. Lots of big names.
Mon A.M.
Barb is cleaning in the kitchen so I'll stay out of her way.
Bon Ton had a sale & seeing we won't see the boys this summer, I found some sales & hope I got something that fits. Will mail the pkg. this aft. so it gets on the way. Andy likes clothes so it's easier to find things for him. Hope Eddie's choices are OK.
Kim had a nice golfing weekend. Played on a course the LGPA will play on later this year. In Youngstown, Ohio. 12 of them.
We watched golf yesterday - it was an exciting finish & Payne Stewart won. We were rooting for Michelson, who will soon be a father.
All is fine here.

Another Fri. A.M., the 19th. Dad is still sleeping, so I'll start a letter.
Tues/ nite there was a horrible smell in the house. A skunk must have been scared & let off his "perfume". Something scared it - a cat or maybe the lite on the garage that comes on with movement. It was bad.
Mon. nite Barb & I both got bargains at Penneys. Barb has wanted a skirt to go with a sweater she has. Looked & looked to no avail & we found what she wanted in a sales rack. I found a 2 pc. outfit. A knit skirt & top. Aqua color. Skirt a little long but I can take it up.
Got my order from Penney's & all fit fine. So now I have something that fits!
Oh yes -- kiddingly I asked Barb if she had any dresses I could wear. Her answer - "they wouldn't fit you." Last week she caame up with 2 & one I like. Andn it fits!!!
Mon. the 22nd I see the eye Dr. My right eye is blurry - have a cataract starting so maybe it's "riper" now. Edna had cataracts removed. An easy process today. Then Mar. 2 I see Dr. McNett for a check-up.
The weather shouldn't be too bad today so I'm going to try to walk over town & maybe browse thru D&K & go into CVS.
Dad sleeps more now & it's harder for him to get around. Because of that I don't get to church as often as I like. Last Sun. the pastor was gone & Roger T. preached & John Check had the liturgy. They are both great. Maybe too good allowing the pastor to take Sundays off.
So Roger Clemens is a Yankee. I hope they don't have it this year. Give someone else a chance. At least Derek Jeter got some money from George! More than he wanted to part with. Also noticed Cal Ripken still wants to play but won't start every game. Guess it's hard to retire. I read an article & his wife doesn't like baseball & would rather have him home. He's had a long career.
Dad fell twice this week. One day after lunch. One A.M. I came down & I always check to see if he's in bed. Went into the bathroom & when I came out he was on the floor & I didn't hear any noise. Dale got him up & back in bed & he didn't get up til 11:30 A.M. I made noise but it didn't bother him. Tried to wake him to no avail.
Ruth sent us pictures of Rachel's wedding. Arland performed the service in her apt. I wouldn't recognize Rachel. Ruth said David's waiting for his S.S. numbers (or whatever) & then he can look for a job. They are looking for a house & I guess they found one they like & have to wait to see if it goes thru, etc. Barb thinks Rachel & Mim look more like sisters than mother & daughter. As I understand it, they'll have a church wedding in Aug. Another wedding to go to. Ruth approves of David so he must be OK!
Spring training has started so I hope our spring weather won't be too far away. Hoping to see robins soon.
Time for a 2nd cup of coffee.
I'm happy for JoAnna - tell me more about what JoAnna will be doing - what is expected of her in this job, etc. Wonder what her former boss thinks.

I need a rest period after cleaning downstairs, except the kitchen floor & last minute spots. Was up at 6:10 A.M. so I could see the women's hockey, USA v. Can. It didn't start til 7 A.M. but I got breakfast going, etc. So I "earned" a rest. The game was so good & "we" won. They all sang the Nat. anthem after the medal presentations. It was very moving.
Last Sun. was another highlight as Dale Earnhardt won the Daytona 500. It was so exciting at the finish & all of us were thrilled he finally won. Tell Eddie Earnhardt finally won. Last summer he felt bad for D. E. when he wasn't winning any races.
I'm trying to cut down on coffee - mine is weak anyway. Sometimes I have trouble getting to sleep but I don't think it's the coffee. It's hard to see Dad go down - sometimes he thinks it's time to go home; wonders who will give him a ride; doesn't know where he sleeps, etc. It's not easy to watch when he had such a good mind.
Fri A.M. This A.M. at breakfast Dale told me news that would interest you folks. Concerning Rocky Logan. This came from Randy Swanson, whose father owned Penn Alignment. When he retired Randy continued to work there - and Rocky had bot an interest in the business. But he never worked in the business, leaving the work to Randy. So Randy quit & now works at Shults. Well Rocky never paid the bill s- owes $10,000 to Barnhart Davis & more to another Co. So there will be a sheriff's sale. Wonder what Marty thinks of this. A sidenote - the senior Swanson married Mrs. Powell, widow of Henry Powell, who was principal of Beaty.
Our luncheon was very nice yesterday. Ted Benson told us some Swede jokes his son got off the internet. "Ole" & Swen & I can't remember the other name. Many were sent in by Luth. pastors. Ted uses the Swedish accent. Last nite Kim was telling something in the same vein. Her friend got them off the internet. If you have a question you can call an 800# & get help. One was a woman wondered where the "any" button or key was - she couldnt' find the "any key". That one stands out in my mind & there were several others.
Anna H. couldn't come as she had another hip replacement - they use a cement & that had to be removed so it was a 5 hr. operation. She has to take it easy. Last time she didn't take the time to let it heal. In Mar. they are going to Disney World & April to St. Martins (think it's spelled differently). They get around. d In May Ted & Pat are going on an Alaskan cruise. Will fly to Vancouver & leave from there.
We got your computer written letter & are anxiously awaiting the next one. I share the letter with Lar & Kim & tell Barb & Dale the news as they are too lazy to read your epistles.
Just heard that Tara L. got the gold in skating & I was hoping Michelle K. would get it. She had a misstep & that did it. Was also disappointed when Todd E. didn't medal.
Mon. nite the 23rd. (above news sounds old now.)
Called Gen & John enjoyed his trip & plans to go again.
Also called Ruth as we've heard nothing about the "sisters". Guess all are the same. Lila hasn't really recovered from her operation. Uses a walker & her mind isn't clear. Stella is in the nursing care now as she needs more help.
Joan's son is getting married in May. The oldest daughter is in Grand Rapids - has her own apt.
Rachel went to England during the holidays & met a fellow over there & they fell for each other. He came over here to visit & would like to get a job here. So maybe there will be another wedding in the future. Ruth met him & said he is nice.
Got your letter today & it was interesting. Glad all is back to normal again. Pictures of Eddie are so cute - the boys are growing. Jeans will get higher & higher in cost. Good Dad can find his at a cheaper cost. Couldn't Andy have used the Valentine 5.00 for a bike lock.
We're suppose to get some snow tonite. Bulb flowers are sprouting. Better sign off.

Eddie and Taury
Took the Christmas tree down the 1st of the week & after many trips to the attic, all the Christmas things are put away. Dale took the tree upstairs.
The toilet in the basement was leaking so Dale decided to fix it. Had to put a new wax ring in. The sink wasn't in right so he fixed that. Didn't like the old toilet paper holder so got another one. Scraped the lower part of one wall & plastered over that. After it was dried, sanded & gave it another coat. So it should soon be ready for painting the walls & floor & then he'll put the toilet back. Didn't think it would be such a big job but according to Dale if you do a job, you do it right!
Football gets interesting. Could it be Pittsburgh vs. Green Bay in the Super Bowl. Hope so.
Soon time to think of lunch so I'll quit for now.
Now it's Fri. & time to finish this so I can mail it Sat. A.M. We got your letter on Thurs. Enjoyed seeing pictures & reading of your activities. We've had a lot of rain. Beaty Field is covered. Melted water coming from the North. Barb & Scott put on their boots & went to Lar & Kim's camp but that hadn't overflowed yet. Dale was going to check it out when he had a chance. Dale found a bank env. with $180,00 but he returned it to the bank. He said that's what he'd want someone to do if he were the loser.

I finally found a box to fit your "dirty clothes" (now clean) & hope to get it mailed tomorrow. Dale is on vacation so he should be able to take me to the post office.
Paul you remember Jacque Welsh - her oldest daughter is spending her senior year of college in Kyoto, Japan & will graduate next spring from U. of Penn. She is a smart gal. Saw Jacque at the store tonite & she hopes to hear soon that she arrived safely. She spent 3 days with Janelle & family in Calif. & they saw her off.
Called Ruth last nite. She is doing fine & leaves on Fri. for Seattle & a visit with Joyce & family. Lila walks with a walker. Ruth was surprised to see their lawn wasn't cut & in spite of the warm weather Charles never got their window air conditioner in. We were never told but in May Stella fell & broke her hip & was operated on. She can't live alone & is in the care unit of the Augustana Home in Mpls. I'm pretty sure David moved to Mpls & a job there. Then I called Gen. They had been over to Edith's as Edith & Ed's cousin from Sweden were visiting & staying with Edith. Things are fine with them. John is still looking at houses but hasn't bee3n successful so far.
We've been watching a program on ABC entitled "Explosion" showing the exploding of buildings to make way for new buildings. Also bombings in movies & police having to deal with bombs placed by "crazies". Very interesting.
Dale is working on his car - has the door completed on the driver's side. It looks so good. Next will be to change the wheels on the other side; the door, etc. Sam m ight buy his present "winter car".
Just want to let you know the pkg is on the way.
We miss having the boys around. We enjoyed having them here so much.
P.S. I ordered a Bose radio today. Should come in a week.
