Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

Thank for the news article on the library open house & the picture of my handsome grandson, Andy. What a heartbreaker -- I'm sure the girls think he's cool! Same for Eddie when he is 16.
And thank you for the lovely fushia -- that doesn't look right but I can't find it in the dictionary, but you know what I mean. It has double flowers. Very pretty. Another one hangs on the front porch & it is from Dale. A yellow flower like a small petunia. Barb gave me a plant for inside & one I think I can have for awhile as it doesn't take much water so I won't over water. Larry dug up the roses opposite the back door & planted 3 rose bushes that have blooms you can cut & they'll keep awhile in a vase. We went to camp for supper Sun. nite. We were on the deck & the weather was perfect. We'd had storms so the creek was really running. It was a nice time. And thanks for the cards. I'm a lucky mom!
Had my mammogram & the gals said "See you next year." I don't think so. Dr. Fino said I should have one, & so did Dr. McNett but I never followed thru. Dr. Clifford gave me info & I tho't I'd better do it before my May appt. Just made it.
This is Dale's late Tues. He worked til 5:30 & then went to take a 3 hr. test to keep his accreditation. Every few years they must take it.
The School Board is having problems but ti has awakened a group in Warren to fight this. They don't want a tax hike; or a high school in Tidioute; & they want the new school finished for a grade school & not a middle school. More fun.
I won't get my hair done this Fri. Barb has to take 2 tests.
Gen called the other night. She sounded good. She wondered about Barb. Don't think I mentioned this -- but I had a note from Ruth with Mim writing it for her. Carole's daughter had a 2nd son & Mim & Tom were going to Alaska for 5 days.
Had a nice visit with Viola but her house was so warm I started coughing & my eyes teared. Didn't stay long so I managed.
We'll celebrate Lar's birthday on Thurs. Sun. we had steaks so it wasn't time for steaks so soon, & we have a lot of chicken & pork so it was decided to have hamburgers & pot. salad. The menus for birthdays it seems. I'll make a carrot cake, Lar's favorite. Sat nite we all are going out to eat at the Fernwood a little past the bridge going toward Clarendon. On the left.

Yesterday Warren H. called & said he had a dentist appt. today & did I want to go to lunch. Naturally I said yes. We ate at the Plaza. I like it there & the food is good. They had been in Cancun for a week & enjoyed it. Another couple went with them. Lots of good food & drinks. Warm ocean water. Sounds nice. Anna had gained weight & the Dr. wasn't happy.
In my present bedroom the fan isn't noisy so I had it on low during the night. It is warm for May.
I'm watching baseball in ESPN2 -- Braves at St. Louis & in the 4 inning St. L. leads 3-0. They lost last night. Am I happy. YES!! How is Andy feeling these days when the Braves aren't much better than the Mets!
Today I showed Warren & Anna the info you sent me on the library work. They were impressed. Warren asked if you got complaints on certain books people don't approve of. I didn't know & said I'd ask. Anna's cousin is a librarian in the Boston area & she has received complaints at times. Against a certain book, etc. I said you are in a more liberal area -- so close to Madison & the University.

Larry is still mowing the lawn where Mr. Crossest used to live. A couple from the Phila. area & want to move back to Warren. He is a Boger, father Dr. Boger, a dentist. They have to find jobs here so the house is empty & they asked Lar to continue the lawn work & trim.
After Mrs. Morelli died, they sold the house. The wife tho't it was too small so they added on the empty lot on Redwood. Lar was asked to submit a bid for yard work. He starts soon. The bid was $5,000.00 & he got a down payment of $2,000.00 to buy shrubbery, etc.

What a wonderful day we've had & I'm sitting on the front porch having just finished my dessert - fresh strawberry pie & coffee. We really appreciate today after a week of colder, rainy which was needed) weather. In the A.M. the furnace went on & the heat felt good.
We're going to Lar & Kim's Sat. nite instead of Sun. as they have a chance to play golf. It is better for us as it is an evening Nascar race & Barb & Dale can't miss it. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is racing in this race. He got a big contact backing from Budweiser. Too many distractions when I'm outside so forgive the mistakes.
The Memorial Fund got a $50.00 gift from Dr. & Mrs. Robert Weiss (Mary Berglund). In memory of Dad, Lar planted a tree & put the ashes under it. We'll see where it is tomorrow nite.
Dale got an edge trimmer (lawn) that is battery operated at K Mart. It works good. He looked at Hoover vacuum cleaners & plans to buy one. It has a filter, etc. It will be for downstairs. The present one will go upstairs. So I told Barb she can have the old upstairs one for a rummage sale. She has a table at Lynn's sale.
I really miss shopping at County. Now it's Quality & BiLo & I have to get used to where things are. We plan to go to the Mall tomorrow - sale at Bon Ton. Got groceries today at Bi Lo.
I'm watching T.V., switching between Mets & Astros & Braves & L.A. Randy Johnson is beating the Mets 7-1 & L.A. is ahead of Atlanta. Also trying to plan menus for the week that might be different from the usual.
We had a nice time at Lar & Kim's last nite. It is such a peaceful place to sit & enjoy the get together. Lar planted geraniums in the tub by the front porch & they look very attractive to passer bys.
What kind of a furnace will you get. Will it involve lot of changes seeing you have 2 furnaces now - pipes, etc.
L. A.-Braves are tied 4-4. Johnson always leave the pitcher in too long. Did the same thing when he was with the Mets. Mets are bad because their good pitchers are ailing.
Dale was telling us Randy Swanson passed out in the rest room at the Cornerstone. Dale asked him what he was drinking - some kind of mixed drink. Dale told him he'd better stick to beer. He said Randy isn't that bright & he doesn't need alcohol to dull his brain anymore.
Nice to talk to you on the phone. Nice to hear Andy tell us about his triple. That is great.
Mon. Memorial Day.
Lar came over & dug up by the garden in that little area that leads to the clothes line. Very uneven & hard to walk on when I want to hang out clothes. Dale will buy square slabs of stone to put there.
Lar put some bark or something by the D.R. landscaping & we need to get more to finish. Such an improvement. The back yard walkway will be so nice once it's finished. Dale saw what he likes & will buy them.
Don't think I wrote (too lazy to look back) that Dale bo't the vacuum cleaner yesterday at Big K. Haven't tried it out yet. So he's spending the money on what used to go for his nites out. He's home every nite now.
Time to write to Gen.

Finally a letter before I touch another book. I ready Family Blessing by LaVyrle Spencer & it was so good. Yesterday I got 5 books at the lib. & finished one short, favorite style. Finished my 2nd today.
Have been giving your N. Eng. vacation much thought. Naturally I'd love to see my sisters & get away for awhile but I'm having my doubts. Haven't mentioned anything to Dad yet - haven't written to Gen - but I don't think Dad would like it or that I could be gone for any length of time. Once Barb went to Jamestown alone as Dad didn't feel good & didn't want to be alone. He was having daily headaches then - not as bad now but he still has them some A.M.'s. I just wouldn't feel right being away. So I tho't I'd better let you know my feelings & doubts. I'll write to Gen one of these days about a visit.
Ruth Ekey (Mrs. Leonard) died this past week. Heart. A couple of years younger than I am.
The pictures of Colo. are so great & so was your letter telling of all the events. The boys are handsome in their "tails". What a memory. Beautiful bride, handsome groom.
Barb bot an unfinished armoire & finished it herself. Now she'd like to get a bookcase to finish.
We've had some rain but not as much as we need. Also we've had some beautiful warm days. Trees are starting to change. Oct is soon here & colder days, I'm sure.
Larry just did landscaping for a family on the corner of Verbeck & Redwood. Corner house in the same block as Blairs. Looks very nice. His next fall project is for John Smiths on Quaker, next to Johanson's.
With a car Barb is able to take Scott to various playgrounds & he loves the slides. And she picks up Marissa after school.
Have some newspaper articles for you to look thru. One Gen sent in a letter.
I'm expecting an order from Penneys Christmas catalog today. Stuff for the boys, a top Kim liked & a skirt I wanted. Oh yes one of those puzzles to create a building. Chose the White House for Barb. Now if I can keep it hidden from her. She's so good at ferreting out her gifts. Correst usage? Things are as usual here. Time to get back to my books.
