Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

Yesterday at 1 pm Barb had an appointment for a mammogram. She got home just before 3 pm. No one can believe the mass isn't cancerous. The Dr. asked Barb to let him know the outcome of the biopsy that will be taken on Thurs. the 22nd.
Called Millie today to wish her a Happy Birthday. She is 89. She said Gen called a couple of days ago to wish her a happy Bday & then Millie talked to John. Gen wanted to visit Millie this weekend but John has a Christmas tree farm behind the grandparents house where John lives. He had more trees being delivered today so they couldn't go. They'll go in the near future.
It's 1 pm & the Mets are on NY TV. Last nite I watched Mets. vs. Pirates. It looked good for the Mets until they took Glavine out. Then the pitchers gave up 7 runs & Glavine's excellent game (1 hit) went for naught. I can watch games on TBS, Braves, & FSN gives the Pirates games.
Barbara went to Erie today shopping. She spent $200.00 on 2 blouses, & about a dozen cotton toips, so she had a nice shopping trip. Bert had told her she didn't need any new clothes but Barb didn't agree.
Dale is thinking it is soon time for him to get his "summer" car out. He's driving it now.
The Pirates beat the Mets again. Tonite I'll watch the Marlins at the Braves. It should be a good game.
One Thurs. Kim mentioned one of the boys in her class had his gym clothes stolen & wondered if Dale had any old clothes. It just so happened Dale had a large bag of Tshirts, a couple of sweat shirts, socks & a pr of jeans. Kim took the bag. She let this boy pick out what he wanted & 3 other boys came & said I hear you have some clothes. One boys saw the NASCAR socks & said I want them. Kim said the bag emptied so far she couldn't believe it. The only thing left was the jeans. Legs too long. I guess there are a lot of kids that don't have much. Lar took 4 pr socks -- they were too tight for Dale. Barb plans to get rid of some tops now that she has new ones. I'm sure Dale could clean out his closet & find more to give to Goodwill.
Mon. the 19th
This A.M. at 11 I watched Boston vs. Yankees & it was a great game. Boston overcame a Yankee lead & won the game. Gary Thorne was the announcer & tonite he is announcing the Boston-Montreal 7th game & in the 3rd quarter it is 0-0. It is a game for the win to go further in hockey playoff. So if it continues to be a tie there will be overtime. It is Patriots Day in Mass. A holiday & that's why they had a day game, The Boston Marathon & ending with hockey.
Tues the 20th
The 3 of us are going out to dinner tonite. I thought we should do something special on Barb's 50th birthday. We aren't asking Lar & Kim as Lar has started his extra work & it's a rush for Kim. We will go out on a Fri. nite as that is better for all of us. I also ordered a special birthday cake from BiLo. Thurs. Barb goes to Bradford for a biopsy & I will go with her. The appt. is at 11:30 A.M. so it will be mid aft. before we get back & that means it has to be an easy menu. Barb said we could have hamburgers so I'll make pot. salad Wed. nite & I have fruit for salad plus toppings for burgers. I guess it will work out. That is why I wanted something special tonite.
We had a nice dinner. Barb had a fish platter with salmon, scallops & lobster. Dale had surf & turf (lobster) & both enjoyed their dinners. We enjoyed going out.
Thurs the 22nd.
I went with Barb to Bradford while she had ha Dr. appt. He just checked her & the mammogram. She will have a biopsy next Mon. the 26th at 3 pm. The Dr. said she could lose her breast & should have an operation as if it's not cancerous now it could be in the future. Next Mon. will tell. He also said she could drive O.K. so I won't go with her next Mon.
Dale will be home right after 4 pm & take me to BiLo to pick up the birthday cake. Nestles ice cr. cones are on sale this week & I will look & hope some are still left. They are so good & 2/4.00 this week.
More next week.

We slept in a bit but we all are "laboring" some. I made a coffee cake & banana bread as I had ripening bananas. Just had a slice of banana bread with mid A.M. coffee. Also did my usual Mon. load of clothes & changed Dale's bed.
Dale, the 2nd one up, went out to the garage to work on one of the cars. The El Camino isn't turning out to his satisfaction so more changes are planned.
After Barb ate breakfast she went to work in the garden.
It has cooled off so yesterday I wore my new necklace, which I don't wear in hot weather. It is so delicate & dainty. I like it so much & when I wear it I think of all of you -- and in between, of course.
Was sorry to hear of Larry's setback but I hope this time the recovery will go faster. It has been a merry-go-round for the relatives.
Last Fri. Barb & I went to the Bradford Mall, thinking there was a Penney's store there. There wasn't but a salesperson suggested we go to Olean & we did. Barb didn't find the pants she wanted so she ordered them from the catalogue. She did find 2 tops on sale. There was also a Bon Ton in Olean. What surprised me the most was after 10 or so years I was able to remember the way. We found both Malls without any trouble. Not too bad d for an old lady!
The youngest Patterson daughter (undertaker) got married last Sat. & Kim & Lar were invited. 4 pm wedding & reception. So Torey was over here with us. Lar picked him up about 9:30 pm.
Last nite the lights went out for about a minute & came back on. It was on long enough for Carey's alarm to come on. We know Lar & Kim were at camp so we called & Lar told Dale how to turn it off. We have the key & that saved Lar a trip. The paper said there was electrical pole fire on the 300 block of Conewango. 8:20-9:15 it was fixed & it didn't affect our lights. I was watching a series of "Murder She Wrote " on A&E. Today they feature "Law & Order".
School started & Kim vows not to let the kids or things bother her. The other Phy Ed teacher, after a couple of days, doesn't know if he's cut out for this. You know how kids are trying the patience of a new teacher.
Last Sat. Dale went to Jamestown & said he might stop at Sam's Club so I asked him to pick up pecans for me. Kim was here & she wanted pecans. We got our pecans -- 2 lbs. for 9.00 -- & Dale also bought walnuts but he paid for them. Also got himself a pr. of shorts on sale.
In Bradford they have a Big Lot store & the salesperson told us Warren is getting one & Barb noticed lights in the old Penney's store so maybe that is where they'll be. Both Dale & Kim love to go there & find bargains.
Don't think I wrote this. Ruth called me one afternoon. Naturally, I thought it was bad news. It wasn't. She was working on the family history & wondered if we have one. I know we have some of it so she sent me the completed history she has worked on. It is very interesting. More than what we've had, more detailed of the Nelson family. So I wrote to thank her, answered Millie's letter & wrote to Gen. So I did my good deed. Plan to write to Darla but haven't had the inspiration yet!
I'm working on another 1000 pc. puzzle. I've done it before but it's still a harder one. If I don't have something to do I get bored, like Eddie says. Then I want to snack -- if I'm busy I'll still snack but not as much or as often!
Tues. A.M.
My regular chores are done & I've showered & dressed.
Adam, next door, got or passed his driver's exam & has his license. He had the car Sat. nite for a date. Twelve o'clock came around & no Adam. They -- Sally & Dan, went looking for him as today 16 yr. olds have to stop driving at midnite. T hey knew the girlfriend's house & there were to be there. He said he didn't know about the midnight deadline. Now he has to be home by 11 pm. Something you'll be experiencing a few years.

We're having some beautiful weather - 2 days in a row. Last nite we went to Bradford for the LCW [Lutheran Church Women] picnic at one of the member's home and we had a good time. Before the picnic Dad gave communion to a lady who had celebrated her 100th birthday on the 11th. She looks good - doesn't even have gray hair. They might be getting a pastor by Fall. We'll have close to 1500.00 in our vacation fund thanks to Dad preaching in B.
Walked to the library this a.m. Last week I read a real good book by Judith Michael but I can't remember the title. About twins and exchanging places, etc. I'll be reading after this letter is completed.
The dining room is coming along real good and I hope to be able to hang the curtains by next Fri. The inside work is just about completed. The wall board is up and the nail holes, etc. are filled in. Dale volunteered to smooth it out to perfection but he will, most likely, need some prodding to get working on it. The new windows look so nice - change the room. And we switched the table so the length is from the buffet to the l.r. Makes the room look different and it will give more space with extra leaves. I cleaned the buffet, washed the cups, etc. and it really shines again. We really enjoy our home.
Tonite we're going out to eat with Bensons in Mt. Jewett - going to Andreas. Hollertz can't make it so we plan to meet them next Mon. and we'll go to DuBois to eat. We haven't seen them for awhile and we usually exchange jokes when we get together and Warren has a couple to tell. I can't remember any from the last time we met. Mon. Bensons leave for Portland, Ore. to be gone for 3 weeks and they will visit their daughter who lives there. Dale will have to feed himself -- isn't that awful.
Dale got a lawyer as he was denied the school they go to after DUI. So the lawyer is trying to get him to be able to go. His time before the judge was postponed so we don't know what is happening. Haven't heard anything. Will be glad when it's all over with. Lawyer's fee 500.00 and I hope it will cover everything. I've paid out close to 800.00 for Dale and he said he will pay me back. Still the fine to come and that should be costly. Maybe 500.00. Will he ever learn. Surely hope so after this time.
Had a nice letter from Barb and she sounds good. Will be nice to be together in Aug 18-25. Will you be coming in on Sat. Lar and Dale will make it in one day. We look forward to that week with the family. Eating out and all.
Dad is playing golf - must be playing 18 holes today.
Picked peas from the garden and we've had lettuce. See blossoms on the beans and tomatoes. The summer is passing by so quickly. I'll be going back to work and I'm sure I'll work the school year. At least that is how I feel now. Will have to go to Soc. Sec. as I'll earn more than I'm allowed and will see what will have to be done.
Time to read again.
