This is a short week due to Memorial Day.  Last Sat. nite we went to Lar & Kim's for a cookout.  I hadn't seen what had been done since I was last there -- the stones by the wood stove & Lar started with the new siding.  It does the trick -- the squirrels don't like it.  He started by the front door & around the deck to the back.  He plans to paint it when he gets time. Shingled the top gable & they add a lot.  Is gable the right word.

Mon. Barb cleaned the front porch -- I sat out there reading last nite.  Found a new, to me, author Katherine Stone.  I like her books a lot.

Last Thurs & Fri Dale had to go to school again so he was 5 days away from the job.  He enjoyed this session a lot.

I called Gen last nite & Ed was still in the hospital.  He had an MRI to see why he had blood in his head.  He has a strong will to get well.  Gen thinks they'll have to study what their future will be.  Thinks they need a smaller place, one with much less work required.

Sent a card & memorial money to Shirley C.  Need to write to Stella but haven't gotten to it yet.

Both Kim & Lynn have Hoover wind tunnel vacuum & they like them a lot.  Barb uses it at Lynn's & both Barb & Kim find it gets the animal hair up.  Lar said maybe it needed to be emptied or the bag could be in the wrong way.

Both Kim & I have "Mr. Coffee" makers & I know they are apt to leak but I find if I pour carefully & not too fast it doesn't leak when I put water in the opening.  Have to have a few problems to keep one on their toes!!

Did I say we now have 4 rose bushes & Barb picked one for a bud vase.  I just love them.  She also planted some veggies -- plants & seeds.

Enjoyed reading the article on Nordic culture.  Amused when one returnee said, I think it was Finland, the country was too Americanized -- they all spoke English.

Wed. baseball on ESPN & L.A. vs. Milwaukee.  Milwaukee fans must be very disappointed.  I'm disappointed the Mets are so up & down in scoring & winning games. 

A week from today Kim  & teachers will be happy.  Only 1 1/2 days left then.  Imagine Andy & Ed are looking forward to vacation & sleeping in.

It is Thurs. aft so I'd better finish my letter to mail tomorrow.  I spilled my coffee & some drips got on my letter.  I'm watching TV in my chair in the living room when it happened.

Was sorry to hear of Stella's death but it is also a blessing.  She was 92.  I'm really glad that Ruth is giving up her home.  Once she gets settled she'll be very happy.

Took the electric blanket off my bed today.  Think the cold weather is in the past.

We're having Andy's favorite meal tonite -- stuffed pork chops.  Planned to make a banana cream pie but the bananas didn't last -- didn't buy enough so I made a pecan pie.

I saw a Hoover wind tunnel vac in the For Sale ads in the paper.  $40.00.  Someone else didn't like theirs.

Bert has ha lady that sleeps overnite so Bert won't be alone.  Last week Elsie Mae came in about 11 pm & was tired so went right upstairs to bed.  Bert didn't realize that & tho't she hadn't come in & was concerned.  About midnight she called Dave & Lois & then called Lar & Kim waking both couples up.  Finally she found out Elsie Mae was asleep upstairs & was embarrassed.  She told Barb she'd give Lar & Kim a bottle of wine for the interruption.

I guess I've exhausted any thoughts I had to share with you.  So I'll sign off for this time.

Just put a turkey breast roast in the oven for our evening meal.

I'll watch the super bowl but it's not as exciting this year.  I'll root for the Rams.

K Mart had 1000 pc. puzzles on sale for 1.99.  I got 3 last Tues. & didn't realize but 2 & get 1.00 off.  Should have gotten 4.  On Fri. I got 2 more so I'm well supplied with new puzzles, altho I don't mind doing them a 2nd or 3rd time.  I'm doing a farm scene - farmhouses, pumpkins, and green  grass.  The green & orange is driving me nuts.  Now I'm soon thru getting the pumpkins together -- then the grass.  I watch TV & do puzzles.  Heard from Millie & she does puzzles.  She said she sits down for 15 min. & 2 hours later she's still at the puzzles.   I have the same experience.  Retirement is nice - no time schedules.  I do some work!  Yesterday a coffee cake, Danish rolls & a batch of cookies.  Even washed the floor last Wed. so my back is better.  Can't be idle all the time.

The weather is something else.  I feel sorry for people going to Atlanta when it's so hard to get around due to icy roads, etc.

I knew my electric blanket was getting old & really found out when it turned zero & I was cold.  I have a full bed elec. blanket neither Barb or Dale would use so since I sleep alone it covers me & keeps me nice & toasty warm.  Next fall I'll look for a new one that fits. 

Last Mon. we had a good time at our get together.  We were there 2 1/2 hrs. & I'm sure the waitress was glad to see us go so she could reset the table.  She was the only waitress so the fellow who tended bar helped her.  He could be a manager of some sort as he wore a suit & was very nice & so was the waitress.  I called for a reservation but the D.R. never answered & I didn't call again but they weren't busy. 

Yes, Paul, I remember the disappointment when you didn't live up to your capabilities but in the end you did, so the disappointment turned to joy & pride.  Don't be too hard on Andy.

June gave us some old letters I wrote to the folks & some Carl wrote from college.  Signe sent him a new shirt & in the letter he asked for a tie to wear with it & a pair of dress socks.  He didn't have much to go on, but he made it.  Those were depression years.

I'll be waiting to hear about your dinner for Signe.  I sent her a card but just signed my name as I wasn't sure of her condition.  The sisters live long lives.  89 for Signe.  90 for Stella & I imagine Lila will be 88 her next birthday.

Gen & Millie went to see Aunt Esther but she knows nothing.  They are keeping her alive & I think that's too bad.  Elsie Yeagle's mother was alert at 100 -- I think they had a party for her at church.  If you have your ind that is wonderful.  Allie Peterson lived to 100 I think, but she was in & out of it.

Your mother has a black eye!  I was walking up the post office steps & tripped & fell on my face.  My glasses pressed on my right eye so it is a bruise mostly under the eye.  Doesn't hurt but doesn't look too good.  People noticed it in church.  My first black eye.  Scratched the right eye glass.

Got your letter & pictures.  You look different.  But I can't decide how I like it until I see you in person.  If you like it that is the best reason.

Tomorrow Barb & I are going to Erie while the weather is still nice.  Want to do some Christmas shopping   I hope to find pants for Andy.  Now that he has more expensive ideas his gifts will be fewer.  Hope he'll understand - but if I have to pay 50.00 for pants_______.  He'll still get his share.

Roland & Linda's house sounds nice.  Eric sure is a hard worker.  Sorry to hear about Signe.  She would be 88 next Jan.  Stella will be 90 in Nov. - the 27th.  But when one hits the late 80s you have to expect the end.

They announced in church today that Gen Brader had died.  I was shocked - didn't realize she was ill.  Ever since Bill's death she was unhappy & read to die.  I don't feel that way - I'm happy for every day when I wake up.

Back to Barb, because she won't work Mon. she will make up the hours the rest of the week.  She has been sanding the kitchen cupboards getting them ready for painting.  Nothing's been done for years & years.

Lar & Kim went to Jamestown last nite to purchase a cabinet for their bathroom.  Like a buffet & they'll take the top off & lay the sink, etc. on top of it.  I know they talk of using old dressers, if good, & cut a hole in the top.  They looked for tops from plumbing co. but they cost too much - $500.00, this one costs 169.99.  Yesterday Kim was going to walk Torey to camp - over 5 mi. - then mow the lawn.  Lar would pick them up.

We like our new chairs.  They are firmer, hit the back in the right spot & are comfortable.  Took a nap on Fri. after they came.  Barb says now we need a rug that blends better.  That's just a dream.

Penn State lost - boo hoo.  Barb is upset they went down to 8th.  The Wisc.-Purdue game was a good one.  Watched it all.

Have golf on TV; Dale has racing & Barb is switching between tennis & the Bills.  Nice to have our personal TVs.

A nap sounds good so I'll close for this time.

Mon.  We had a nice trip to Erie & found (I hope) pants Andy wants - at Penneys so can be exchanged.  Also the other gift he wanted.

I've done practically nothing today except watch Ryder Cup golf on T.V.  The Americans are a disappointment losing 10-6 on Sat & 14 points win.  Another disappointment are the Mets.  Can't believe how they have slipped.  The young golfer from Spain Sergio is a breath of fresh air.  He played with the Swede Jesper & they were winners.  Hope you follow golf a big so you know what I'm talking about.

Last Wed. I went out for lunch with our pastor friends.  We always have fun together.

Mon. Barb wants to go to Erie shopping.  She is now working for 3 people - all due to Kim.  And she might have another one - one of Kim's friends is losing her cleaning lady.  Barb enjoys it.

Dale is now painting the side door of the garage & the final painting of the 3 windows he fixed.  Did a nice job in them.

Mr. Curtin has his well digging rig at Camp & he hopes to start digging next week.  His 85-year-old dad works with him.  He is the one that climbs on the rig & Mr. C. is on the ground watching.

Lar took some time off to work on master bath & has the tile finished.  They have a shower ordered.  It is a larger one with a seat so you can sit down.  More elbow room.  T hat's why I like our basement shower.

Last Thurs. when Lar & Kim came for dinner I had something besides the usual chicken.  Hatch Patch was still selling corn so we had steak, baked potatoes & corn on the cob & it was delicious.  Kim had some a week ago & they didn't like it so we were lucky.  It was our goodbye to summer meals.

Can't believe that Fri. is Oct. 1.  Before you know it, Paul, you'll be celebrating your 50th birthday.  How time flies.  That means I'll be 1 year closer to 80 & that is harder to believe.  That's old!

Kim was telling they have a new boy who is from Union City.  He assaulted 3 teachers there & they were glad to get rid of him.  How lucky can Sheffield be to inherit him.  And some people think teachers have a soft job & get too much money.

Dale was saying one fellow at work knew someone working at Eisenhower Hi School in the cafeteria & due to the shortage of substitute teachers they asked this gal to sub.  She refused saying I couldn't do that.  That's scraping the barrel all right.

Sun. aft.

The golf is great this aft. with single play & the Americans are making the putts.  If they should win it will be a great overcoming.  I almost wanted to skip church but my "inner voice" said "no!"  And I obeyed it & was glad I did.

What has happened to Wisconsin - I thought they were a better team, but they're losing.  Has Andy noticed Penn State has been winning - at least so far.  Yea, go Penn State!  They have a very loyal alumni - they come from all over & tickets are hard to get to the games.

Saw the lawyer & the new deed to the house is soon ready to be signed.  To be divided evenly between you 4, or the heirs.  We changed it to "heirs" & Mr. Swanson wondered about the daughters-in-law.  I said there's no problem there.  He asked because so many mothers-in-law don't like or get along with theirs.  No problem.  I have 2 wonderful "daughters-in-law".

Just checked & Buffalo is ahead 16-0 in the first half.  Barb is happy.

Guess this covers the news here.  Nothing too exciting goes on here.

P.S.  Ruth called to tell that Stella fell &  broke her wrist (in a cast) & her upper left leg.  She will have her leg operated on Mon. the 27th.

Ruth is fine.  Has had her house painted & a new roof.  New rug for the porch.

David will start a new job (chaplain) Oct. 17th in Mpls.  Have to sell their home & by a new one there.  Be nice for Stella to have him close.

I need a rest period after cleaning downstairs, except the kitchen floor & last minute spots.  Was up at 6:10 A.M. so I could see the women's hockey, USA v. Can.  It didn't start til 7 A.M. but I got breakfast going, etc.  So I "earned" a rest.  The game was so good & "we" won.  They all sang the Nat. anthem after the medal presentations.  It was very moving.

Last Sun. was another highlight as Dale Earnhardt won the Daytona 500.  It was so exciting at the finish & all of us were thrilled he finally won.  Tell Eddie Earnhardt finally won.  Last summer he felt bad for D. E. when he wasn't winning any races.

I'm trying to cut down on coffee - mine is weak anyway.  Sometimes I have trouble getting to sleep but I don't think it's the coffee.  It's hard to see Dad go down - sometimes he thinks it's time to go home; wonders who will give him a ride; doesn't know where he sleeps, etc.  It's not easy to watch when he had such a good mind.

Fri A.M.  This A.M. at breakfast Dale told me news that would interest you folks.  Concerning Rocky Logan.  This came from Randy Swanson, whose father owned Penn Alignment.  When he retired Randy continued to work there - and Rocky had bot an interest in the business.  But he never worked in the business, leaving the work to Randy.  So Randy quit & now works at Shults.  Well Rocky never paid the bill s- owes $10,000 to Barnhart Davis & more to another Co.  So there will be a sheriff's sale.  Wonder what Marty thinks of this.  A sidenote - the senior Swanson married Mrs. Powell, widow of Henry Powell, who was principal of Beaty.

Our luncheon was very nice yesterday.  Ted Benson told us some Swede jokes his son got off the internet.  "Ole" & Swen & I can't remember the other name.  Many were sent in by Luth. pastors. Ted uses the Swedish accent.  Last nite Kim was telling something in the same vein.  Her friend got them off the internet.  If you have a question you can call an 800# & get help.  One was a woman wondered where the "any" button or key was - she couldnt' find the "any key".   That one stands out in my mind & there were several others.

Anna H. couldn't come as she had another hip replacement - they use a cement & that had to be removed so it was a 5 hr. operation.  She has to take it easy.  Last time she didn't take the time to let it heal.  In Mar. they are going to Disney World & April to St. Martins (think it's spelled differently).  They get around. d In May Ted & Pat are going on an Alaskan cruise.  Will fly to Vancouver & leave from there.

We got your computer written letter & are anxiously awaiting the next one.  I share the letter with Lar & Kim & tell Barb & Dale the news as they are too lazy to read your epistles.

Just heard that Tara L. got the gold in skating & I was hoping Michelle K. would get it.  She had a misstep & that did it.  Was also disappointed when Todd E. didn't medal.

Mon. nite the 23rd.  (above news sounds old now.)

Called Gen & John enjoyed his trip & plans to go again.

Also called Ruth as we've heard nothing about the "sisters".  Guess all are the same.   Lila hasn't really recovered from her operation.  Uses a walker & her mind isn't clear.  Stella is in the nursing care now as she needs more help.

Joan's son is getting married in May.  The oldest daughter is in Grand Rapids - has her own apt.

Rachel went to England during the holidays & met a fellow over there & they fell for each other.  He came over here to visit & would like to get a job here.  So maybe there will be another wedding in the future.  Ruth met him & said he is nice.

Got your letter today & it was interesting.  Glad all is back to normal again.  Pictures of Eddie are so cute - the boys are growing.  Jeans will get higher & higher in cost.  Good Dad can find his at a cheaper cost.  Couldn't Andy have used the Valentine 5.00 for a bike lock.

We're suppose to get some snow tonite.  Bulb flowers are sprouting.  Better sign off.

I'll start a letter & add to it as time goes by.  It's hard not being able to sit down.  Haven't been able to go to church or do much of anything.  Hoping is trying so you'll have to buy your own birthday gift this time Paul.

It's been awhile since I wrote - did I write we have our new elec. box & it is so nice.  Sometime in the winter Lar will do some wiring for us.

Thanks for the boys' pictures.  They came out real good.  Andy looks a little "heavier" when compared with last year's picture.

The landscaping by the D. R. windows has grown together & is too big.  So Lar will remove some of it & replant.  That will be our birthday gifts from Lar & Kim.  He'll use smaller pieces.

The people across the st. landscaped the corner by Conewango & 3rd.  It is around a big tree, terraced like & so attractive now.  Hard to describe but you'll see it on your next visit.  They used old cement as dividers - hard to visualize but very attractive.

Jack Carey's mother died & the funeral was the 10th.  Lisa & family came & so did Susan but not her husband who had to be in court.  Sat. Carey's left for Fla. for a month's stay at their condo.

Now it's Sun (19th) & I still can't sit.  Today my rear is especially sore - think I did more walking than I should have.  If I can't walk that will be a big disappointment.  I'm using the Micro as a desk now while I'm standing & writing.  Other times I use it as a table to eat.  Later in the day I can sit a little while.

The Xrays showed a thickening by the disc in the back so I'm taking Naprosyn twice a day.  Guess I expected a miracle as it hadn't helped that much.

Arlene Hornstrom stopped by with a birthday card for us as she had been in Buffalo with Julie & family.  There was 20.00 in the card & the thin Swedish molasses cookies which I love & Halloween M&M's for us in a bag.  She's always been so good to us.

Finally heard from Stella - she is now in a 1 room apt. in Mpls. & gets 2 meals a day.  It was so good to hear from her & to get her new address.  I wrote a note to Signe as she sent Dad 10.00 in his birthday card & a note to Arlene.  So now I'm ready to rest while on my back.

Oh yes, the Marlins won - hope they take the series, but I hope Cleveland might.

Oct 24.  Better get this mailed.  Good news about Eddie.  Some just take longer to adjust.

This will be a lazy day. Next week will be busy as our 6 friends come for lunch on Thurs. Have the menu planned & will get the house in order. Will have the same meal at nite when Lar & Kim come over. All of a sudden Torey is afraid of Dale - it must be the uniform - someone must have scared the god & now he barks at Dale & it makes Dale feel bad. Before he always went to Dale.

Today at 10 A.M. an electrician is coming about a new outlet box so we won't need fuses anymore.  We also need some new lines for more power when Dale uses the elec. tools.  He wants more power in the garage.  I can't use the microwave & the elec. roaster at the same time without blowing a fuse.

And I ordered new flooring for the kitchen.  Sent 1/2 the cost for the order & will pay the rest when it comes.  Next I need to call about getting the porch painted.  Dale said he'd do the garage windows & big door.  He already did the side door.  So the house will look nice on the outside.  Thanks to Edna.

We've had spring weather but it will change by the weekend.  The snow is just about gone.

Paula Carey was back again for an interview at Northwest Savings.  He has a job but needs to pass Pa Bar Exams.  They even looked at a house.  Lar & Kim ate at Jamie's last Fri nite & Paula & her husband came in & they talked.  Kim wonder why they want to come here - thinks Paula has outgrown Warren.  I think she wants to please her parents.

Do you remember Viola Seaquist - her daughter Betty Ann 59 yrs. died of cancer, due to smoking.  She had moved to Calif. 8 yrs ago to be with her children - 3 of them.  Last Sat they had a Memorial Service at church - 1 1/2 hrs & very different.  Planned by her kids.  They took her death hard.  Viola was in Calif. to help at the end.  They paid to have their pastor here for the service & he stayed at Viola's.  She had a houseful & she is 85 yrs & active.  A good group was there.  I attended the service.

Now I'm dressed, breakfasts are over.  There is a load in the washer & in the dryer.  Paid a few bills & now I'm drinking a 2nd cup of coffee.

Last nite we had halibut I got from Schwans & it was good.  Yesterday I got chicken on a roll - they sound good.  8 in a box.  Wanted to try their chicken meals but he didn't have any.  I'll get them in 2 weeks.  Their froz. peas are delicious.  Even Dale agreed & he isn't that keen on peas.  My orders are getting larger.  They are a little higher in price but since we don't eat out anymore that justifies the extra in my mind.

We called Stella & she is happy to be settled again.  Tried to call Ruth & then forgot to try again.  Maybe I'll connect this weekend.

Did I tell you Barb had more problems with her period.  She got a birth control shot the Dr tho't might help and it has.  She had a pap smear & blood test & all is well.  No cancer & blood O.K.

Should write to Gen so will bring this to an end.  When can  we expect the boys visit during the summer.  One sure thing will be a trip to Waldemeer Park.

Late nite Ruth called to tell us that Stella is moving to the Augustana Retirement home in Mpls.  She'll have a 1 bed apt on the 6th floor.  She'll be happier there as she has friends living there.  Also I have a friend who lives there.  Donald is improving.  Today Ruth is will be going to the P. A. Peterson home in Rkfd.  It was getting to be too much for Ruth.  The daughters (Ruth) didn't approve - Mimi offered to take her but they aren't home to care for her nor realize the extent of care needed.  There are 6 people from her church there so she'll know people.  It's been a hard experience for Ruth - I agree with her decision.

Lynn got a new, larger freezer for her home.  The old one is a small one.  Knowing Kim would like to get a freezer, Barb asked Lynn about it.  Result:  Kim gets to buy it for 75.00.

I've been cleaning out drawers while watching T.V.  Nice to have things in order again.

Holder's house is for sale, so we'll be getting more new neighbors on the St.

Hope to remember to enclose an article from the paper on our library & it's monetary problems.  The County commissioners & School Board are all having money problems.  Teacher's are still hoping for a contract that was due last July 1.

Now it's Fri. the last day of March Jan.  I have the last day of Mar. on my mind + SPRING.  In time.

Got your letter today.  Very interesting reading.  There's been a lot of T.V. & in the papers about Star Wars.  Your skating sounded like fun - good family sport.

Am enclosing a recipe for C. C. cookies with oatmeal!  It's easy & delicious.

We had fish sandwiches for supper.  Dale just came home & will have the same.  He surprised me.  French fries & a milkshake.

We'll get this ready to mail tomorrow.  I get a hair trim tomorrow & really need it.

I can't find the article of the Milwaukee renewal project but you'll find out if you go there next Thurs.

Barb is on vacation the next 2 weeks as Lynn & family are going to Fla to visit her bro. & sister & parents.   They're renting one of those vans with T.V. V.C.R. etc. so that should help.  Figure it will take 2 days to get there.

Careys are at their Fla. condo for the month of Oct.  Every time they go away their house alarm goes off.  This time I wasn't home as I usually alert Lar so the Co. called him.  We have they key & Lar has to turn it off.  Luckily he heard the phone ring.  Police come, too.

Connaro - Mary and Hal - live on East Street now, near Pa ave in that big white house & Lar has done some planting for them.  We won't eat til 6 pm as he wants to work later as it gets dark so much earlier now.  No problem for me.  But I'd better start getting busy so I'll finish later.

USA comments on baseball are interesting concerning the Mets & Yankee fans.  The fans hate each other.  I'm not sure if I'll root for the Braves as their announcers are so biased now, if they win again they'll be impossible to listen to.  Have you heard Joe Morgan is an analyst on NBC.  I think he is great.  I like him & Jon Miller on ESPN Sun nite baseball.

I'll finish this - it looks like St. Louis will be finished if the rest of the game is like the 1st inning.

Forgot to mention Roland called on Dad's birthday.  Signe is with them for a month & she wanted to talk to Dad.  It was 10:30 our time & he was asleep.  I was watching baseball.  Talked with Roland a bit.  Lindsay plays soccer & Eric referees the Sat. soccer games & earns some money that way.  Mentioned he hadn't talked to you for a long time.

Stella called.  Dan, Barbara & 4 of the kids are in Fla.  Barb has been gone 3 months & Dan was to go for 3 weeks & has been gone for 5 so far & Stella has heard nothing.  One son & wife are living in the house in I.M.  They just had a baby.  Wonder if they'll go to Fla.  Dan was driving school bus & working at Walmarts.

We heard from Lila & she wonders if we could visit them.  I don't think they realize how sick he is & can't travel.  They probably think I am holding him back.  I'd go in a minute if Dad was able.

The pastor came today to give Dad communion.  When it was over Dad cried - he feels bad he can't get to church & this A.M. he didn't feel that good.  I think next time it will have to be in the aft. as it takes time to get going.  I'm just glad he can be home.

Dale is getting ready to eat - he worked late tonite.  Glad for the microwave.

P.S.  There is a SOLD sign on Johnson's house but no sign of anyone doing anything - moving in, etc.

Larry took Dad to see the eye Dr.  He finds it hard to accept that his illness affects his eyes & he finds it hard to read.  In this connection, he isn't able to reach American Heritage magazine so I would recommend against renewing it for him.

I just finished reading "The Golden Straw" by Catherine Cookson & it was so good.

Haven't heard anymore from Gen.  We also called Stella.  When the weather warms up she hopes to get out.

Then Signe called us.  She wants to come & visit us & she wants Lila to go with her.  That would mean Genevieve & maybe Charles & Dad couldn't take that, even for a short time.  So we try to discourage her.  After all she is 85 & Lila 84 & neither are that well.  Carolyn's son Paul graduates from high school & has been accepted by both Augustana in Rock Island & St. Olaf in Northfield, Mn.  He prefers the latter but Augie has offered a 2,000.00 scholarship in music.  He's hoping one comes thru from St. Olaf.  The bassoon is what he plays & he'd like his own.  Cost 2,000 & up.  Carolyn gets 40% disc. where she works & they are looking into a 2nd hand one.  They are very proud of him.

Our furnace works well & keeps us warm.  It keeps me too warm when working so today I got out some of my presummer tops.  Time for a change anyway.

When I spoke to Gen yesterday she said they'd seen their first robin.  That is what I'm waiting for.  Am also waiting for the mailman & USA paper so I can do my daily crossword puzzle.  He's late today.  Have to keep my mind alert!!!

When Lar & Kim come on Thurs, we'll have to tell them about Eddie's suggestion to try & capture the chipmunk, squirrel or whatever is in the attic with nuts.  Altho we haven't heard as much movement lately. 

Barb drove Bob's new Ford Bronco Fri. home work work & this A.M. to work.  Her car needed some work done so Bob worked on it over the weekend.  The last weekend of the month Bob, Lynn& Marissa are going to Toronto for a break & Barb gets to have Scott all weekend.  She is afraid he won't be very happy when the folks are gone & he's left with Barb.  Scott gets & needs more attention so Marissa feels left out so they wanted to do something special with her.

Tomorrow is Circle & I'm leader so I need to review & the mail should be here.

P.S.  Dad just came home & the reason he has a hard time reading is the start of a cataract but they won't do anything yet.  He can see T.V. etc. so they'll wait.  He has a Sept. appt.  He feels better now.

Thanks for your letter.  I have a good start on Christmas - Bon Ton has had some great sales.  Really need ideas for Paul & JoAnna..

To celebrate the Bicentennial they will put an engraved brick walk in front of the theater.  Engraved names in blocks for 75.00 a brick.  Plan to get one for Dad & am thinking of getting one with Andy & Eddie Nelson on it.

I bought a paperback finally.   K is for Killer by Sue Grafton.

Also got a book by Sara Paretsky at the library, "Guardian Angel" & now I found I've already read it.  Also got "Texas Rich" by Fern Michaels & "The Nightingale Legacy" by Catherine Coulter, a newer book at the library.  If I couldn't read, life would be drab.

Went to the dentist for a cleaning & check & had 1 cavity & got it filled last Mon.  Next Mon. I get my yearly physical, which was postponed from a Sept date.

We are enjoying the World Series.  I stayed up to the end of the 11 inning game.  12:45 AM, our time.

Don't care for the TV set up - for the play offs & the 2 channels having to share.  Prefer A.B.C. but they talk too much to suit me.  I put together 2 puzzles while watching the games.  Prefer to be doing something as I watch.

When Barb first started bringing Scott here for a cooky, he was shy.  Now he comes in with a big "hi" & leaves with "goodby".  He is talking much more.

Barb wants to take Fri. Nov. 3rd off & she & will go to the Erie Mall to shop.

Stella is home from the hospital.  Did OK after the operation.  But the Dr said she'd either have to go to a nursing home or to Dan's for awhile, so she is with Dan & family.  Naturally she hopes to get to her own apt as soon as possible.

Signe is at Lila's this weekend as Carolyn will be at her college reunion.  Ruth called to let us know about Stella & told us about Signe.

Now it's Sat A.M., Nov. 4th & I'll finish this.

When talking about books, forgot to mention I bot "Chicken Soup for the Soul"  and have enjoyed reading the different stories by various people.  They are inspirational.

I had my yearly physical & all is well.  Visited the dentist, had 1 cavity & got it taken care of.  Got my eyes examined & just had 1 little change in my right eye.  He said my eyes are in fine shape, couldn't believe I was 75 & that whatever I was doing to keep it up.

Yesterday Barb & I went to Erie.  She drove & we had no problems - she is a good driver.  We went to a new dept store Kohl's & it is nice.  Ate at The Olive Garden & really enjoyed it.  T hen to Barnes & Noble Book Store.  Fun to look there.  Next Stop Toys R Us & we had fun there & just about finished the boys' shopping there.  (If only it were that easy to shop for their parents!!)   We weren't in the Mall for long as it was nearing 3 pm & we wanted to be on our way home.  Time went just too fast, but so much fun.

I was in bed by 10 pm & up at 6:30 A.M. as I couldn't sleep any longer.   Dad gets a hair cut this A.M. & then Barb & I will go to our Mall for a couple of things and get groceries.

We're having our first snowflakes this A.M.  Yesterday we were lucky, we had sunshine but you could feel it getting colder.

Finally met our new neighbors.  Halloween I made double batch of Danish & bro't over 8 & introduced myself.  The next day I got a nice note from her.  Al & Pat Herrera, Kyle & Alyssa.  We just talked at the door a few minutes.  In the card she said when she is "more settled we'd love to have you over".

Bob & Lynn bro't Marissa & Scott here for trick 'n' treat & I had 8 rolls for them.  And Lar stopped in after raking at Carey's & he got some rolls.  I'm known for something - my rolls!  Better than nothing!

Kim will be glad when 5 pm comes as then she will have completed more credits toward her master's degree.  Thurs nite after they left here, she had to complete a paper for this.  A new Sam's (WalMart) opened in Lakewood so they'll go out to eat & then shop there, etc.

Dale got a V.C.R. for his room & also bot & installed a garbage disposer for our sink.  Old one wore out.  All is well here.

We received your nice letter & pictures of the boys.  They are growing so fast.  Nice report card for Eddie.  We look forward to seeing all of you.

Wrote a long letter to Gen for her birthday.

School is out & the kids are free to play etc.  St. Paul & First Luth. combing. for Vacation Bible School at 1st.

A week ago Lar & men of the church landscaped the front of the church & edged & weeded the plots on the parking lot side of the church.  It looks very nice.  Last Sun was Pentecost & members bro't red geraniums to decorate the altar area & they were planted outside on Mon. & they add color.  Lar made the plans, ordered shrubbery & directed the planting.  That job was really needed.

They laid the cement & blocks for Lar & Kim's house.  This week they should start the structure.  They are glad it has finally been started.

When Lar works at Careys & edges the grass by the sidewalk, he takes the time to do ours & Barb & Dale clean it up.  It is such an improvement to our property.  In Dec. the car will be paid for & we're hoping that next summer we could have the house sided.  Painting doesn't last & something is needed.  We might get away with just painting the shingles as they hold up much better.   Time will tell.

Our pastor & wife had to take a trip to Houston as Margaret's mother took a fall & laid for some time before she was found.  She uses a walker & isn't that well.  Lives alone & doesn't want to give up her home.  Their son graduated last nite from high school & it must have been hard for Mary to be away at this time as she teaches school.  Roger Thelin preached last Sun. & Jim Greenlund took the liturgy.  They did get home for graduation.

Wrrn. is busy celebrating 200 years.  It all ends with the 4th of July doings.  They'll have a special edition of the paper on 200 yrs & we'll save it for you.

I finally read some of M. M. Kaye's books & enjoyed them.  Murder in Kenya, Zanzibar, etc.   Her name has been familiar for a long time but I never bothered to check her out.  Am glad I finally did.  Light, enjoyable reading.

Barb is working outside.  Vacuumed the car but didn't wash it.  And now she's weeding, etc. in the garden.

Stella called last Sun.  She is still weak & can't get out.  Dan & family are back - 11 living in Stella's house - now Dan's.  The oldest son Danny got married in Fla. to a gal who already had a son (now 18 mo.)  Sounds like she wasn't married & the father could care less about them.  With Danny she had a miscarriage.  He isn't working.  So it's Dan & Barb, Danny, wife, her child, plus their 6 other kids.  Don't know if Dan is working & didn't ask.

I saw a petunia at Hatch Patch that is different.  A light maroon pink & the center is maroon & looks like a star.  So Barb & I went up there & I got a white geranium & planted 4 of the pet. around it.  It should be pretty in full bloom.

We tried out the air cond. & it's great.  It's suppose to get more humid so it will go on again this weekend. Interrupted myself.

After Hatch Patch Barb & I went to Lar's place & the cement & block work looks good.  Lar has built a stone step way down to the stream & over a bit an easy path down to the water.  Did the boys get shoes for the water - to protect their feet.  KMart has them on sale but I don't know sizes.

Time to sit on the porch with a cup of coffee.  Oh yes I got our 1st local strawberries at Hatch Patch.

Also got the New Penneys catalog & have been dreaming & making lists.  See several things I like.

Happy Anniversary, Paul & JoAnna. We love you both and we are hoping your are part of us.

I'm taking the easy way out & sending money as a gift. JoAnna mentioned once she'd like a picnic basket or perhaps there is something else you've thot of in the meantime. Or you could put it toward dinner out. Enjoy!

We received your letter today & we always love receiving them.

It rained this A.M. but by the time I was finished with a shampoo & set, the sky was blue & the sun out. Stopped at the bank to cash a check & returned a book to the library & got 5 more. "Love's Music, Loves to Dance" by Mary Higgins Clark & one by her daughter Carol Higgins Clark. Her first novel "Decked". Started to read "Decked" & am enjoying it.

Barbara cleaned the porch last Sat. & put the chairs out, but I haven't sat out there yet. Weather too unpredictable.

Been lazy & haven't kept up on the treadmill but have walked more outside. Next week I hope to clean our bedroom.

I got a new waffle iron & we enjoy these waffles more than frozen ones from the store.

Barb just came home so we're going to the Mall.

Now it's 2:15 p.m. Saturday & I'm cleaned up to over to church to say hello to Mrs. Margaret Smith. (Kathleen Rossey's mother) on her 90th birthday.

This A.M. we went to Hatch Patch & I got pansies, petunias & allysum (however you spell it) & after I washed pots, I planted 8 pots for by the side of the garage & I still want some geraniums. It's a lovely day. Barb is planting petunias in the backyard. We're going to look at a trimmer to make it easier for ourselves - an elec. one.

Lar & Kim had a bet -- according to Lar; Kim said no -- they would start work on the house the week of May 14th & Lar lost. So he owes Kim a week out of dinner but she'll take 1 a week. Now the starting point is May 24th.

Ruth called to tell us Gen S. is in the hospital due to continuous seizures. A new Dr. thinks it is due to emotions. She said Lila is so tired out. Stella has been home for several weeks. We heard from her & the new problem was stomach trouble & she's being treated for that. Can't find the letter for the exact problem name.

I got my hair done this A.M.; came home & started vegetable soup for supper as it is still cool here.

Thanks for your letter.  When you have children you have to expect a few headaches along the way.

[Here's what Mom is referencing.

Andy asked if he could go over to Meaghan’s house once we got home.

“You need to be home at 6 o’clock,” I told him. That gave him 45 minutes to play.

At 6:01 Andy had not yet returned home. No surprise. Six minutes later I called Meaghan’s. Her mom told me that Andy and Meaghan were at Nick’s house, so I called there. Nick’s grandfather said Andy was in the back yard playing ball. I waited a long 30 seconds for Andy to come to the phone.

“Hello.”

“Andy, what time is it?”

“Six o’clock.”

“Actually, it’s six-oh-seven. You should be home by now.”

“But I want to play until six-thirty.”

“All right.”

JoAnna called about five minutes later to announce that she’s on her way home. I turned up the burner under a pot of water for cooking noodles, the bed for our Campbell’s stroganoff. JoAnna put a package of stew meat and two cans of cream of mushroom soup in the crockpot before going to work.

Still no sign of Andy. I looked out the kitchen window, expecting to see him turn into the driveway on his bicycle. After another couple minutes, I called Nick’s house again.

“He’s on his way,” Nick’s grandfather reported.

It should only take him a couple minutes to ride his bike home from Nick’s house, I thought. Somebody is in trouble.

I walked outside and looked down the street. No sign of anyone. I retraced my steps five minutes later. This time I saw two small figures across South Avenue. Meaghan must have walked to Nick’s house, so Andy was being a gentleman and walking her part of the way home. Once we returned home, I told him he couldn’t play outside after school until daylight savings time arrived. (Not that far away, actually.)

The menu for supper didn’t appeal to either of the boys. Eddie was practically traumatized by the french-cut green beans on his plate.

“I don’t want them on my plate,” he cried, a few tears streaming down his cheeks.

JoAnna told him he could eat his dinner or go to his room. He chose the second option. Within a minute, we heard a theatrical wail of sorrow. He soon rejoined us, probably because he was afraid to be in a room by himself, a behavior he has exhibited quite regularly over the past few months. He picked at the food on his plate, but then he had eaten a bowl of cereal minutes after we returned home. Andy actually found the chunks of stew meat tasty, and he’s always like noodles. He didn’t eat everything on his plate, though. I should have asked him if he had anything to eat at Nick’s. Snacks seem to be easy to come by there.

While JoAnna washed dishes, I ran the boys’ bath water. Eddie informed me that the water was too hot.

“No, it’s not, Eddie. Look at your brother. He’s in the tub and not complaining.”

Eddie persisted with his whining. Someone’s a tired little guy, I surmised, but before he goes to bed, he’s taking a bath. I picked him up and forced him to take a seat in the tub. He resisted, but I insisted. I wet his hair, lathered and rinsed it, then wrapped it in a towel and handed him to JoAnna, since that’s who he was calling for through his tears.

“I want my mama.”

Fortunately, the evening ended on a very positive note. The boys and I snuggled together on one of the captain’s beds and Andy read two books he had brought home from school., Clifford’s Puppy Days and The Runaway Teddy Bear. Andy’s a very accomplished reader for a first grader. He’s made tremendous progress in his reading skills since the beginning of the school year.]

Finished reading Sue Grafton's "A is for Alibi".  Finally found it at the library.  Now I've read all except for her latest.

We'll be losing our neighbors, the Willis' (Rose Pelligrino) as he has taken a job with the Cumberland Valley School District starting May 1st.  He's been bldg. & grounds super.  I noticed last Sun. they were cleaning out their garage & painting the roof over the sun room.  Imagine Rose will be here til school is out.

Walter Johnson is in the Rouse Home so I imagine that house will be sold in the future.  Emma died a couple of years ago.  Paul is the only one around & he lives in Youngsville.

Dad is having headaches & the Dr. doesn't know what is causing them.  Probably Dale's situation.

Signe called last nite at 11:05 our time & we were in bed.  Dale was still up & answered the phone.

She is now living with Carolyn & Jim.  She wants to fix a den in the basement so she has a place her things, etc.  Jim isn't working & she'll help them with expenses.  They paid 600.00 a mo. for their retirement apt.  She has her own phone.  Said Stella isn't that good.  Wonder if she'll ever get back to I. Mt.  Wonder if she can live alone.  She is paying rent on her apt.

Don't think I mentioned I bot a spring dress thru Penney's catalog & am very pleased with it.  A blue & white print (not navy).  Had to shorten it as it was too long for my taste.

We had a late anniv. card from June.  She said Sharlynn's daughter Nikki had her 2nd baby, a son & she didn't want to write about the situation.  She wasn't married when the 1st came, a girl & maybe she still isn't married.

Gen called the other nite - she never writes - well, hardly ever.  I got 5x7 pictures of the family (one you like) to send to all the sisters in an Easter card.  June has been asking for pictures.  Larry & Kim paid for everything so you can settle with them.

Careys have been in Fla. the last 2 months.  Lar has checked the house.  They should soon be back & it will be nice to see them come & go again.  He is fully retired now.  The girls would like them to move to the Phila. area but Mary Ann like her home here.  Time will tell.  Paula is engaged to a lawyer so they have 1 more wedding to go thru.

Time to think about lunch.

Enjoyed the article re: rural churches.  Seems like the best answer to a difficult problem.

Dale got the miniature Corvette to go with a Corvette plate he ordered.  Now he ordered a Bel Air Chevy.  Like the cars you collect.
