Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

Just a few words. Finished cleaning upstairs & have some letter to mail for Dale. I'm enclosing some clippings and a note from Gen, so I won't have to writer about her happenings.
Baseball today - ESPN - 1 pm, 4 pm, & 8 pm. So you know what we'll be doing.
Followed the temps in Ariz. so I know you had summer weather. We didn't get the snow the East had - today it's sunny & warming up. Tomorrow will be even better so I'll walk over town & do some errands.
I'm back to reading. Angel by Barbara Taylor Bradford & Home Song by La Vyrle Spencer. Both enjoyable reading.
The kit. floor is so nice but I see more spots than with the rugs - no wonder it got so dirty. So now I'm going to go after the spots
Letter to Marion from Gen.
I'm at the Dr's office for Ed. He has a rash that has been bothering him.
About a month ago he had a mild heart attack. I went to the Dr. with him & the Dr. wanted to hospitalize him for observation overnight, but Ed didn't want to. He has slowed down but can't understand why he can't do what he used to accomplish. I'm sure if he lets his heart heal a little he will be able to do more, but maybe he should slow down. He does go up in the wood to cut wood, but he has a wood cutter to cut the logs into pieces. We use the wood in the breezeway to keep it warm for the 2 cats! We don't even use that room for ourselves!
They are cut tho and very clean, ...you should have one! or two!
I just grabbed this paper as I came out the door. Yesterday Ed had an eye appt...no major change there.
John wants to buy his own house - doesn't want to live right near to us. He has looked at several. There is one in Wilbraham that he likes with a nice view - it is a large ranch. He's made an offer on it, but quite a bit lower than the people want to accept. It is empty now & I wonder if they don't sell soon if they will accept his offer. It was owned by an elderly couple & the husband died & the wife is living with a daughter. It does need some fixing but Ed says it is the best house John has looked at. He has looked at several in Longmeadow, too.
Wally & Edna's house was put on the market for 127,500 & the price in last Sunday's paper was 108,000 or something like that. It is a real nice house, but not the best location. Betty & Bob scrubbed & painted & fixed everything up to make it like new.
We have robins in our back yard. So good to see them. I'm ready for spring.
Hope Barb is better and that the medication is working.
Yesterday after the Dr's we stopped at Gus and Paul's (or Dale) for coffee & a danish. Wonder where we will stop today. Ed feels we are entitled to something different once in awhile.
Frank isn't feeling too well, but I guess that is expected. He's been in the nursing home for over 5 yrs.
Millie & I went out yesterday to do a few errands. She enjoyed Las Vegas. She'll probably be writing you.
This is Tuesday, the 25th.
It's a gray day but tomorrow is supposed to be clear & warmer.
I should do some ironing & make some Brownies. I use the Pillsbury Mix - it is so easy.

I am going to try my hand at typing again so bear with the mistakes due to mostly to not being familiar with the typewriter. Good excuse is better than none.
It looks like you will have a good weekend for skiing. This is Fri a.m. And you should have the car by now and I know you are enjoying it.
The other day Barb went over town to return the free lottery ticket and bot 2 more, one for me and one for her. We were not successful but the ticket she returned was another free one so we are still working on the one you got, Paul.
The weather has been nice so Dad and I have been walking and it is good to be back at it.
Barb is making herself a cardigan sweater and it is really nice so I asked her to make one for me and she will. We have to get the yarn and I would like 2 shades of blue. It has a different yoke and it makes the sweater. It is wool yarn so it will be a nice sweater for early spring and late fall.
Perkins finally has Belgian waffles on the menu so we went for breakfast this week and they are delicious.
Where Kim has her studio there is a baby sitting service and there has been no rental charge - suppose to start in Jan. but the lady is giving up the service as she is pregnant. Kim plans to find out if they can keep the service going without the rental charge as the rent of 100.00 a month doesn't leave much left for profit.
Anyway she asked Barb if she would be interested in the job if it can be worked out. Barb said yes so we hope it will work out. The sitting is necessary as Kim has mothers who depend upon the service as well as the weight lifting group. It is from 8-12 a.m. The lady would leave all the supplies there, games, puzzles, etc.
The birds haven't found the new feeder yet but they will. It took quite awhile for them to find the old one. I think it has been used a few times as we can see seeds scattered under it. And they can really scatter the seeds.
Had a nice letter from Gen. Aunt Esther is now in a nursing home at East Longmeadow. Gen said she looks good and has (how else you say it) her mind back. Is lucid, I guess you would say. She had her hair done and was dressed up when they went to see her so she is content.
Edna and Wally will join the E. Longmeadow church. It is hard for Edna to give up Bethesda but Wally refuses to go there because of the pastor so Edna gave in.
I'm enclosing the pictures we took. Lar hasn't been over with the ones taken at his place.

It's snowing - yesterday we had a taste of spring & it was heavenly!
Had a perm. this aft. so now my hair is short & curly again.
Lauri said she wants Barb to babysit Sat nite. Otherwise all she does is read, walk to the library & watch T.V. I remind her she needs to find a job - to no avail. She doesn't want to stay here, but seems in no hurry to go.
Tues. we went to Erie. Didn't buy anything but Jelly Beans but we enjoyed the day. It was a lovely ride.
Wed. we went to Fredonia for lunch with Don & Pat Greendahl & then to Sidey's dept. store. Got a pair of navy, low heeled shoes on sale. Very comfortable.
Last nite was Lenten Midweek & my circle served coffee & donuts afterwards. Rose said Jim was interviewed for asst. Pastor in Latrobe. Very large congregation - he'd be 3rd pastor - 1 is a woman. But they've interviewed at least 10 already. A committee will come to hear him preach. He's wanted to move for over 6 months so I hope something turns up.
Had a nice letter from Gen. They have a new pastor & like him. Millie went to church with Gen on Sun. Their church will celebrate 100 years & they are planning a fair & Gen & Ed are busy making things. Ed's made some Swedish horses, a plaque with ducks on it - etc. He is talented that way & those things sell well. They enjoy retirement.
Dale gave the car in the garage to a friend in exchange for work on the Olds he bot. Also work has to be done on the El Camino. He had lost interest in the Firebird. It's nice now as he can park the El Camino in the garage & Dad can get out if he needs to.
Baseball - oh happy day!! On Sat. the Mets play a preseason game & also the Braves will be on T.V.
Cars have been on display at the Mall & we looked at Dodge vans & we like them. Dad might look into what kind of a deal they would give.
Dad has had a sore back & has seen the chiropractor & goes again tomorrow. It doesn't seem to go away & once he played volleyball too soon & that didn't help. He didn't listen to me!!!!
It won't be long before Apr. is here. Time goes by so fast & I can hardly wait to see Andy again. Wonder if we'll be strange to him - but he is with other people so that makes a difference. See you soon.
