Until July 2010, when her eyesight deteriorated, my mother wrote 1000s of chatty letters during her lifetime - to her parents, in-laws, sisters, children, friends. Tho she started to write to me on a regular basis in Sept '68 when I began my freshman year at SUNY-Buffalo, it wasn't until 10 years later that I decided to hold onto them. (Very inconsistently at first, to which the big gaps between dates attest.) These are the letters transcribed, annotated, and otherwise highlighted here.

I got a perm this aft at 1 pm so I want to get my work done. One load is soon finished & 2 to go. And the bathroom but Barb must get up first. Tied up papers, cleaned the basement toilet & put out glass jars to be taken. Now I'll sit & start a letter.
We had a trace of snow overnite. We were so lucky that the snow melted slowly so no floods. Buffalo was afraid of floods due to the ice breaking up. The TV showed a lot of ice jams.
I'm so glad I had the flu shot. No even a cold so far, knock on wood! Lar said he'll get one next fall as he always seems to get sick for a few days each winter Am I repeating myself...did I write that already. Barb should soon be up as she has to get a shot at 9 A.M. About her fibroids so she won't bleed so much. Change of life should be stetting int. Kim said she is getting hot spells, esp. during the nite. I don't know why I was so lucky -- childbirth was a snap & change of life never affected me. Just good Swede genes I guess! Too bad it doesn't work for getting up during the nite. I cut my coffee drinking at nite. no coffee after 4 pm. I have to have it for breakfast to start the day.
Later:
I'm home now & I like my perm a lot. I'm watching spring baseball -- Seattle vs. Anaheim & I think Anaheim has possibilities to win.
Had a letter from Carolyn -- she was surprised to hear from me on her birthday. She is busy with music for Easter. Several churches choral festival together. Said Paul was teaching music, grade 1-5 in Blaine, Mn & likes it. He has a girlfriend -- a senior at Hamline U. with major in Flue & political science. She was glad to hear from me & would like me to write again. Darla said that as well & after a couple of letters gave up writing. Maybe I'll write & if Carolyn answers I'll write as it is nicer to hear from her. When they were practicing the music Carolyn stated to direct & the chorus responded with "Happy Birthday to You". She said my card came before Roland's & son Paul's.
After supper the Buff. news said U.B. students are excited over their U.B. basketball team making the playoff. They play N. Ill. in Buff tonite. UB's teams aren't that good, but even theier footall team won a few games last fall.
Tues. nite. Barb's perm looks nice.
The news tonite said U.B. beat N. Ill. & on Thurs they play in Cleveland. They are really excited.
Dale had a dental appt. today at 4 pm. He usually goes for a check up at 8 AM. I told him he might have to wait at this hour. He didn't. Was home by 5 pm. He lost part of a filling. I always have to wait when I see Dr. Walters.
The elevator is a work of art. It is beautiful. I'm anxious to hear how people like it. Thanks for the pictures -- everything looks so nice. Are you more relaxed now that it is finished.
Even tho you & JoAnna are busy people, you always manage to do things for your sons. Going to games & making jambalaya for Eddie's class. That is great. The parents must be pretty interested in their child's activities with the parties they have after a game & the parents helping out at the refreshment stand. I'm sure it means a lot to the son or daughter.
The salesperson who waited on you when you were buying furniture -- asking all the questions to find out what you needed. Furniture sounds interesting.
Your new neighbors are interesting. They've Americanized their names. I'm sure the wife will learn more English seeing the son is in school. What is his job & is that why they moved to Middleton.
Warren Hi had another bomb scare & they caught 2 girls who did it. Kim said the 2 girls who were responsible for a bomb scare in Sheffield were back in school -- don't recall how many days they had to be out -- & Kim &^ others didn't think they should be allowed back. They have to follow thru on punishment so they know they mean business.
Wed. Tonite Barb asked Larry how come he didn't grow a beard this winter. He answered "Because there were too many gray hairs!"
We've been watching on Wed. nites Psychic Detectives on Court TV. Very interesting. A new program.
Thurs. Barb wants to go to Jamestown tomorrow but I'm not sure if I want to go. Barb plans to go regardless.
All is well here.

Called Carolyn M. last nite to tell her they won't make a copy of a photographer's picture because of the copyright. So she'll contact Ruth to see if she can find out about a copy -- if the studio is still there, etc. Carolyn mentioned she invited you folks for Easter dinner. She also mentioned Signe had a spell of pain but is OK now. She just hopes Signe won't suffer a lot of pain. She just hopes Signe won't suffer a lot of pain. It's soon 6 months so she's done OK.
Dale went to the junk yard last Sat to look for a wheel rim & found one. His current rim has a little dent U& of course that can't be. He put it on after work & it fits so now he has to paint it. The tire was still on so he threw it away at work & as he did that he noticed a wet vac thrown away & he claimed it. The 3rd one he's found. A guy at work would like one -- Dale just repaired the cord on the 2nd one so he'll give it to him. The 3rd one was still wet -- probably not taken care of & Dale loves to tinker & repair things. He also found 2 estension cords with a light. He gave one away & kept one. What a guy.
The census questionnaire came today. I don't' own the house anymore -- you kids do -- so I guess I'll put Dale's name as owner.
Barb bot veggie & flower seeds & planted them. She put them in her room by the window so they'll get the sun. She planted lettuce for Bert & already they are coming thru. Bert is pleased Barb did that for her. Barb did that for her. She was in advertising & knows Iacocca from Ford & then Gen. Motors, I think. Before that she was in fashions. Quite a lady.
Tues. evening.
I'm watching Trauma -- Life in the E.R. I close my eyes when they start cutting. It's about accidents, shootings, drugs, etc.
Wed aft.
A beautiful day. Barb took me to get my blood test & I walked home. Stopped at CVS & didn't see any sympathy cards I liked so I walked back to Cady's & got some. Wanted to send one to Tom & Diane Scarcella on the death of his mother. I made sugar cookies today -- mainly for Torey. He gets 2 each time he visits us. Spoiled dog!
I couldn't find my keys last Thurs. I used them to unlock the car & didn't see them. I looked in my purse & finally found them. The purse has 2 zipper pockets & I didn't realize that. One under the other & I must have absentmindedly put it in the 2nd pocket under the 1st pocket. I've had the purse several months & never noticed it.
Had a letter from Millie today. She told me about the funeral of Aunt Esther. The pastor couldn't go to Gen's for lunch as he had another funeral. She's looking forward to spring like everyone else.
Thurs p.m.
Cleaned up dishes after dinner. Lar & Kim's night to come over & we sit around the table & talk. They said Careys are seriously thinking of selling their house & moving closer to Susan. She is still having problems -- drinking & they'd like to be closer & Susan would like it. Last Sat. Lar helped them (Paula & John) move stuff to Carey's garage. They have a house in Buffalo but it takes time to get it all settled -- loans etc. Then they'll need help to put it back in the U Haul truck. They took Lar & Kim out to dinner last Sat. nite to thank Lar for his help. John found a job up there & likes it much better than the job he had in Warren.
Filled out the census & will mail it tomorrow. Wasn't sure how to answer who the owner of the house is so I put Dale's name there as he lives here & has a job. He was saying his paycheck is never the same as they get paid by the job -- how hard it is, etc. How much times it takes. If they go over the allotted time to get it finished that's their loss & if they finish in less time that's to their advantage. He's had some raises so he does all right.
Fri. St. Patrick's Day
This aft. Barb & I went to the Mall & I did some shopping at K Mart. Stopped at Arby's for supper for Dale & me.
Got your letter today. Wasn't too surprised about Joan & Alan. Glad she had the gumption to leave him. Can't remember who told me but one summer I hard that Mim told Joan that any time she wanted to leave Alan she could come to them in Beloit. And Alan demanded the money she earned & then Joan had to ask him for money. Joan is 52 -- maybe there will be some happiness for her now. The son is 30 & the daughter 29. There is some time between the youngest but she must be around 20 or so. I'm sure Ruthie must have left something to the girls & that might have helped Joan to decide to leave. She'd need money for a divorce & apt. They were married in Aug. & the son was born the following Aug. I remember hearing Alan could never please his father or get any attention or love from him. Joan had a self image problem so maybe it was a hopeless situation. Maybe they should have had help to change themselves for a better marriage. Wonder if Ruth will ever tell me about the divorce.
It was COLD this AM when I walked to get my hair done. 26 & blowing. It still felt good to be able to walk.
Guess I've covered the news here.

It's 8:30 A.M. & all is quiet. This is Dale's early week so I'm up, dressed & set to go. Where - well I should cash a check for Feb. expenses so I plan to walk over town. It is sunny so should warm up a bit.
You got 2 letters as I'm trying to write letters on Fri. & mail them Sat. when I get my hair done. It doesn't always happen.
Early this A.M. - 3:15 I heard a noise & saw a light downstairs. Dad was up sitting in a chair - 2 lamps on in the L room, back door & basement light on & in the bathroom. Finally got him up, changed his Depend & got him back in bed. But I just dozed so I'll probably take a nap this aft.
Been thinking of Cindy & the baby. Be sure to keep me informed.
Already wrote notes to Millie & Gen.
Am watching the Weather Channel & one gal has a pretty yellow suit on. Makes me think of spring. We still have piles of snow in spots - the sun doesn't reach them - and it feels like spring but I know it's too early for W. Pa.
Noticed in the paper that the Mets fired Tim McCarver & hired Tom Seaver. AND they will be on Ch. WPIX so we'll see some of their games. Oh Happy Day! What more could I ask for?
Signe called last Sun. but Carolyn & I talked. Dad said a few words. Carolyn said she'd be taking Paul back to college & would miss the wedding. (Charles) But maybe Jim would take Signe. Hope you can make it.
In Buffalo there is talk about moving Children's Hospital & people are very upset about that. I watch Buff. Ch. 2 news - it is the most investing. NBC.
NASCAR racing starts Sun. & Dale is happy. The book on Dale Earnhardt family came & it is so interesting. Read it thru. He is family oriented. Followed in his father's footsteps & learned form him. Father died at 44 of a heart attack & he still misses him. Mother, 2 brothers & 2 sisters still in N. Carolina.
Aft. (PM)
I tried to get Dad up & he didn't want to so I let him sleep & went to cash a check. So I have my cash for the month. I got him up & he had "brunch", 2 meals in 2. He was up awhile & now he's sleeping again.
Stopped at the library & got "Pictures of Perfection" by Reginald Hill. Tried to get a book by Ian Rankin but couldn't find one & didn't have time to check. In Buff. paper there was a good review of his books in general & the latest one "Black & Blue". To quote - "There are no barrooms, no four letter words. And when he romances the town librarian, there are no affecting descriptions of just who does what to whom. They enjoyed their lovemaking 'he says', and that's all I'm going to tell you on the subject." My kind of book - tame!
We got a letter today from Messiah Church Auburn inviting us to the 75th Anniversary May 1 & 2. We can stay with Elfrieda Kennedy but it will be just a dream. No way can we accept,m as nice as it would be to return to Auburn once again. I'll have to write a letter.
Better bring to a close.

I'm watching the Mets at Montreal and they are ahead - for the time being. Chic. is ahead of Pitts. But I'm sure Oakland will go all the way this time. If the Mets come in 2nd to Pitts. I'll be happy.
Tonite Barb answered the telephone and talked a bit and then said I was here so I took the phone and the caller said this was Carolyn and went on to say they had to take her mother to the hospital and it took me awhile to realize it was Signe she was talking about. Didn't expect to hear her voice. Signe had a high fever so she was hospitalized for tests, etc. Still don't know too much. And Geo. is at a nursing home next to the hosp. so he can see Signe daily. Sometimes I wonder if the care of Geo. is getting to be too much for her.
We are enjoying the video. Lar and Kim were over last Sun. so we showed it to them. In the picture we noticed that Paul was swinging his arms when he was watching Andy in the water and Kim commented that Lar does the same thing and said it must be a family trait. Later in the film Andy was doing the same thing so it must be. I never tho't about it before.
Last Thurs. it was a beautiful day for a change so we went to Erie in the aft. One of the stores was having a sale and I got an all weather coat - it is longer and will cover longer dresses. A red one. We ate at the Red Lobster. In Sept. we have had over 5" of rain.
A couple of Sat. past we met Hollertz at Cook's Forest and it is so nice and we'd never been there before. We had a late breakfast at a nice place that was rustic and the food was good. We drove around and stopped to play minature golf and it was fun and it was quite different from the usual course. We always have fun with them.
Dad cleaned out his closet and put away summer things so I decided to do the same and between Dad, Dale and me, we had several bags for the Salvation Army. Got rid of things we don't wear any longer.
This noon we had the Senior group potluck at church and we always have lots of good food. The program was a film on the Amish and it was very interesting.
Things are fine here. The weather is suppose to improve so we hope that is true. We can see the trees are beginning to get some color.
Dad called Signe at the hosp - Carolyn gave the number. She's had tests but won't know the rests for 24 hours.

We were suppose to go out to dinner with Mel & Levina after church but Levina got sick during the nite. So we decided to go to First Luth. Jamestown. It is a large church with an excellent choir & organist. Young pastor & woman assistant pastor.
Afterwards we went to The Brookwood for a delicious lamb dinner.
Called Sig & Geo. yesterday about 1:30 E.S.T. & Geo. was still in bed. He has so much pain in his neck & Dr. can't understand why. He's to have an xray this week. But they want to come & visit us this spring. Hope it works out.
They had been to Beloit & Min is losing weight and can't keep food down. Char. is home & has the basement as his abode. He's playing in various churches in the area in hopes of becoming music director. Lila complains of leg pains. The family is showing its age.
We talked about going to the lake & it sounds as if the Rkfd group won't go & Sig & Geo. aren't sure. We wondered if there is some other place in Wi. that has rental cottages as it sounds as if Roland & Linda are interested. Carolyn goes to Green Lake in Wi. but maybe that is already filled. Think about it & talk it over when Roland & Linda visit.
Carolyn has a chance to teach full time in Ca. but hasn't taken it yet as it sounds like she has to see Paul from time to time. Wonder if they'll change their custody arrangement.
Kim met with Mr. Ferguson; he suggested she submit a resume as there will be an opening in her field. She might not get the Beaty job but it will be a job with better insurance, retirement, etc. Lar can have better coverage, too, on her plan.
Barb & I put a new puzzle together. This week I'll work on the one you gave us when we retired.
Oven still not in use. The pilot light didn't work right & he had to order a part. Maybe next Wed. And I had made up cookies & rolls to be baked. So I froze the dough. Hope it works for the rolls but if not, it would be a loss regardless.
Sig mentioned that Linda was elected to the Church Council & is an officer in the Women's group. Hint! Hint!
I'd like to set dates if you still want us to come out in the spring. I think the end of Apr. say if we leave here either Thurs. the 21st or Tues the 26th. That would leave May open for Swanson's.
How's my little darling.
Dad's fixing a fire in the fireplace so I'll bring this to a close with our love.
